Wow… here I am, just scrolling through TH-cam, learning tips and tricks for my hammock, when this video pops up on autoplay after the one I just watched. It’s crazy to think that I’m out here in the desert on deployment, learning better ways to hang my hammock from a friendly, and familiar face. 😊
Hey man just wanted to say I love this video, the music os great, the video style, the speed you go. Its all perfect, I come back to this video all the time.
Brilliantly explained. Been using these knots for twenty plus ears, but when I was learning it would have been easier if I had this video instead of learning from line drawings in a book like I did. Great video.
Thanks for explaining about the truckers hitch loops and bites and which end to pull through the loop, working, not standing and pull towards the tree.
I'm glad you showed the loop knot for a replacement to the bolan for securing to the tree. I worked for a tent company for 3 years and that's all we used to secure our expensive 1000lb+ tents. Its incredibly simple. Incredibly effective. Noone ever shows it.
Great Vid. A little trick on where to put your trucker loop is always to your outside shoulder or one arms length away from the tree. Has served me well for years. Also when hanking put your loop between your ring and middle finger. I have found out by accident that doing this keeps the loop out of the way in a hurry up situation like raining. LOL
All your fraying cord ends are driving me crazy, but those are a great set of knots and I like that you include practical applications for each one in addition to a detailed demonstration of how to tie them. 🙂
I had the same problems with the hennesy hammocks set up. I added a bowline knot at each end that I connected carabiners to and then bought a separate straps (similar to eno's) to hook them to. Works great.
Thank you so much. I'm brand new to camping in general, but certainly a hammock novice. I have to save up for a camping pad and some of the other gear but I ordered a hammock, a rain fly tarp for hanging above me, and a mosquito net meant for hammocks. I'm really excited! Your videos are very helpful.
@@dick-parker I have. I feel like wildfires have dominated camping season the last two years so it's only been a few times but it's been great. I keep it in my car and set it up at parks and residential lakes when I can't get out of town. I love it.
Ive heard that loop called a marlin spike hitch. i now use it on all of my stakes.! I modified my Hennessy setup. I bought super-light python tree straps and used the Stock ropes to tie to carabiners. Works great. Great vid
These were awesome tutorials. Going camping soon with a hammock for the first time and was planning on just winging it with overhand knots and lansky knots the only two my non boyscout ass can manage XD
Hammock Camping is the only way to go! After a back injury I thought I would never be able to enjoy camping again as it was incredible painful to sleep on the ground. Knots are my Kryptonite. I wish I had learned them as a kid. They are imperative to hammock camping so thanks for the helpful video! Are you in Maryland?
For "fine" adjustment on the ENO strap, could you run a line between the first two attachment points and draw those together to get your "perfect" distance?
Thanks. Enjoyed watching your video. I have a hammock that I have never used because I really wasn’t sure how to hang it. I, gonna try it out next weekend
I made my own straps from old seatbelts. Strong, a little wider which is better for the tree. And it's long enough for larger trees than the one you've got there. Just use thick and strong thread to sew the loops, and it's all good😊👍
New to hammocks but not to knots. 9:23 is a slip knot. 2 half hitches in sequence in the same direction is a clove hitch. 2 opposing half hitches in sequence are a girth hitch.
I store my ridge line with the prusick knots on to make for a faster setup which makes it bulkier, And so to pass all that on a loop isn't practical. So the knot I prefer to tie on the first tree where I'm anchoring the ridge line is the Siberian hitch.
This is exactly what I was looking for. I am clueless on this subject and *knot* afraid to admit it. But it's *knot* something I want to avoid learning. Sometimes I walk through the woods picking up lot's of forget me *knots* But all jokes aside thank you!!! I can practice these indoors and get more proficient, rather than relying on my friend all the time lol
Since you brought it up in your video, the knot you were unsure about and called a "loop with a bight" is a normal slip knot commonly used for the ridgeline trucker's hitch.
and if you put a toggle in there instead of tightening on the bight, it would be a marlinspike hitch - which is one of the most useful knots around on it's own and because it can be the basis of so many others.
The best hammock tying: take paracord and make a prusic knot on the tree strap (same as he did for the tarp). Use a toggle to attach the hammock to it. The prusic can stay there permanently. Super easy and fully adjustable
For picking a hammock camp site; how far apart is ideal for the anchor trees that should be used to install the hammock, to retain concealment, and wind, and the ages/thickness of trees?
It is a marline hitch. It's is one of the starting points of all knots, depending on what next steps are taken. Run the running end through the marline loop, pull on the standing end, it will collapse into a bowline.
Hey Just found your channel a few days ago Some really nice content Would you recommend hammock camping on a "yellow leaf" hammock? ... It's what I own.. But looks very diffaren from all backpacking hammocks I've seen
Comment on the tautline hitch. There are three variants, Ashley 1855, 1856, 1857. 1855 crosses wrap 2 over wrap one to lock it. 1856 doesn’t cross 2 over 1, but wrap 3 is in the same direction as 1 and 2, and is likely the most common variant, and is what most Boy Scouts learn. Your wrap 3 went the opposite direction as 1 and 2, and is the third version.
What kind of rope did you use for the ridge line? I thought you said paracord at some point but I’ve heard that paracord is a bad idea because it stretches and sags easily....
I’ve always enjoyed your channel and the tabletop reviews of different gear are awesome! On a different note I was wondering how your real estate work is going? We just purchased a home two weeks ago. The process was insufferable but our agent was great and we’ve actually become friends...
Thanks, man. I think I'm changing directions on this channel to do more videos like this out in the woods instead of in my little studio. Glad to hear you became friends with your agents. It can be a stressful process. Business is going well for me. I'm still putting out content on that channel and it's generating me business! th-cam.com/channels/KCXzw4V62g44ExQWXvaPNg.html
Not a Bite, it's a Bight. A Bow Line knot was used to hold a square sail into the wind, it's the line to the bow of the ship. Very good instruction though, not to fast paces, and very clear. I know most of them and use them a lot. However I do not favor using cord for hammock suspension as some do. It is much to likely to injure the tree.
Here's a little tip to make the truckers hitch hold better while you tie it. Wrap your working end around your loop an extra time. It will grip better while you tie a half hitch and pulls out easily.
Thanks for the excellent knots class. But you're presuming making the ridgeline repetitively harder than necessary IMHO. The Warbonnet Blackbird comes with a fixed ridgeline installed inside (as any other hammock could also). From there I evolved it adding a steel ring on each end (outside the bug tent tensioned by the ridgeline) as attachment points for ridgeline & hammock & rain fly, so each piece (hammock, bug tent, ridgeline, rain fly) is always at its best length & tension relative to every other, & nothing ever needs retying, & retensioning any individual component is still simple though never needed. Add to that on each end a web cargo strap with ratcheting tensioner as 'tree straps', and there is a simple system that almost never needs adjustment.
Hi there. How do I get an email to you? I am based in South Africa. Not sure if you know anything about SA. But do you mind if I ask you a few questions related to Prep etc?
Great video good knots! But honestly I am disappointed because it's titled as a hammock knot video. And when it's time to hang the hammock there's only one knot! Dude even says he prefers hardware over knots. Bummer. He doesn't even show the Beckett hitch 😢.
You tied the taut-line hitch wrong. If you start over the line (which you did), then 2nd line also over, and then 3rd over the line as well outside the loop. You went over, over, and then under.
A taut line hitch is a safety knot that tree trimmers use to go up and down the trees. I don't like it because it binds up too tight more than a blakes hitch which is my choice safety not.
Michael, Arborists one of a dozen variations of a Prusik knots on their Rope Wrench to go up and down trees... or a mechanical replacement like the Rope Runner Pro, Akimbo or ZigZag.
"hammock camping is really easier" but you need to know 10 different knots, you need lot's of cords of different size, need to gather small pieces of wood to make toggles and you also need trees. Sounds to me like a free standing tent is a bit easier. Otherwise great video for hammock enthusiast
Nah, just use whoopie slings and there’s zero knots to worry about. For a rain fly ridgeline (my fly has guylines built in), just use a couple “figure 9s”. Again, no knots. It really is super easy to setup that way. 🤘🏻

Truth is I always forget the complicated knots lol
Brilliantly explained. Been using these knots for twenty plus ears, but when I was learning it would have been easier if I had this video instead of learning from line drawings in a book like I did. Great video.
I always burn the ends where my paracord is cut. The outer sheath melts & seals the end so the inner cords don't come out.
Thanks for explaining about the truckers hitch loops and bites and which end to pull through the loop, working, not standing and pull towards the tree.

Hennessey sells 3 length of straps if I remember. I had a choice when I bought mine

Good video. Regards from U.K.
Thanks for this video - very well articulated!
Great video. I only wish you had used orange para cord.
Good feedback. Maybe I'll do that on my next knot tying video.
Question.. could you just simply lash the Hennessy Hammocks end cords to caribiners and then just use the ENO type tree straps??
Someone else in these comments suggested that and I do like that idea. I might give that a try next time I go out!
The ENO straps are often made of nylon so they'll stretch horribly

Quick release bowline knot + farrimond friction hitch + prusik knot = all you need for fast set up and fast set down.
What style of music would you call the backing track?
Another great video.
Nice explanation video. As others have said it's bight, not bite. The knot around 10 minutes that you didn't know the name to, it's a slip knot.

Tyler Mazza you might have to retension it occasionally but Paracord totally works.
I definitely prefer “zing it” (Samson amsteel) over para for just about everything.

I don't think HH owners use their straps or recommended tie. Python and the knots you mentioned, or O rings.
You dont know the name ofthe knot at 10.15, its a slipknot
Did you know you can use a lighter to burn the ends of your paracord/cord to prevent it from faying like that?

Put two tree hugger straps together. Doubles the length. Should always have extra straps. Super handy.

Hi! I really like the info but wanted to let you know the hissing noise in the music soundtrack (brush on a drum?) is really distracting for me.
it's "bight". please.
And also, those pieces of Paracord with the cores sticking out and frayed for 2 inches are squicking me. Use a lighter, man.

I guess the smaller webbing forces you to use smaller trees so you don't end up under a bigger (older) tree likely to drop dead branches on you.
