I adore the actress that plays Mary of Bethany. She is so pretty and innocent and delivers an excellent performance in this scene. Edit: Catherine Lidstone. Bravo.
I 100% agree!! She’s absolutely lovely!
@@jbc242424 agreed!
Gorgeous
Ive seen this comment else where too lol
Mary anointed Jesus' feet like David did the lamb. This scene was interesting implying Mary understood/listened well while the others are not understanding that Jesus' time is coming to an end. Jesus Christ is the lamb. Our savior.
Mary of Bethany did a great thing. She wanted to pay Jesus a special tribute. She did. When you think about it, what can anyone really give God? He owns it all. God is the King of the entire universe. 😊❤️✝️🕊️🙏🦅
I don’t know if you realize it or not, but she was “embalming him“ before his crucifixion. She knew he was going to die.
@@maryvalentine9090 Jesus’s love for us can’t be explained. The depth of His great love. He never deserve to die especially in such a horrific way. He did because he wanted a relationship with His children.
Of course Mary knew. She always intently listened to Him. She was respectful despite the cultural implications.
Obedience. And that’s what Mary did here. She was obeying God and honoring and praising the Lord.
He only wants our heart. ❤
@@maryvalentine9090 The 3 bags are something like the 3 expensive gifts of the Magi: gold, frankincense and myrrh at His birth: the welcoming/adoring at the beginning and the different welcoming/adoring at the ending.
Catherine Lidstone did a superb job as she entered the room, kneeled, and anointed Jesus’ feet in worship. This scene captured Mary’s beautiful and breathtaking devotion towards her Lord and king. I loved every moment of it.
The fact that Judas was freaking out because he knew how much that expensive oil cost, is hilarious! 😆😅
And he wanted that money for the purse so he could steal it.😂 The scripture says Judas was a thief and a robber
@@marshallevoltzministries9240 He wasn't just that, he lived with them, loved Jesus or he wouldn't have killed himself, he would have just left, he did miracles in his name. I don't let a line in the Bible make up the man. I hope Dallas gives him more dimension. It seemed the oil in The Chosen smelled bad the way they kept backing away and holding noses.
@@workinprogress-ye5or Just because the odor was extremely strong doesn't mean it was bad.
@@kwebb121765 true but I'm going on facial expressions, covering noses and leaving room. If someone had heavy peppermint smell I wouldn't act like that. It seemed the director really wanted to emphasize that since it was quite a few people, not just one.
@@workinprogress-ye5or Probbably the oil didn't smell "bad", as such, but it was such a strong smell because of the sheer amount she poured out. Imagine smashing a large size bottle of what's currently thought of as top-shelf
Am I the only one who wants to know what these oils really smell like? 😅
No you aren't, I'm right there with you
Spikenard with rose is available to purchase as an essential oil mixture which is an earthy, leather, floral scent. Best value 2,000 ml for $1,750. ( in case you want to offer small amounts as gifts in atomizers.)
YoungLiving has spikenard. It smells awesome
I have myrrh & francensense pure essential oils. I'm not a fan, but it's really good for killing bacteria and fungus, & ear infections.
Go to Whole Foods or Natural Grocers etc. They have racks of tiny essential oil bottles including one of each that you can remove the lid and smell the fragrances of everything.
For what he gave to us, this was a good start. He deserved so much more. I love you Jesus, not only for what you did for us but for your wonderful loving heart. No one has ever loved us like you do.
Yeah, Judas, stop hoarding money if you really want to help, rich young ruler, you!
I loved this scene - it was just annoying that Judas and Shmuel nearly killed the holy moment.
I love this scene, and watching Schmuel's reaction is icing on the cake 😂
The main issue here is what is appropriate.
Does God want us to constantly tear down other people's roofs, touch other people's clothes without asking, or spend large sums of money for a moment of exuberant fragrance?
No, definitely not.
But when it comes to Jesus Christ, the Son of God and his blessing, even the seemingly "excessive" is appropriate, because his nature and his blessing are so much more important than our earthly rules and possessions and petty ideas.💛
I never understood how pastors of small churches would use so much money on cars and other things and mega churches where they say "God wants me to have this much money" It's a slippery slope. A rolls royce? IDK.
@@workinprogress-ye5or Of course it is a sin to spend so much money on yourself when there is so much terrible poverty in the world. And then for a flashy car, which is something of an idol for some people.
@@workinprogress-ye5or Everything that goes beyond modest wealth, we Christians should donate to the poor and relieve their suffering. One of my favorite passages in the Gospels even describes how Jeshua teaches us, followers of Christ, to be "calculative" when it comes to money. By giving it to those in need who can't give us anything back! 💛
I love Jesus Christ so much!💛💛💛
@@isabelleskiss so true
I love the actress who plays the role of Mary. Her facial expressions at times tell stories on their own. Very captivating.
Catherine does a FANTASTIC job as an actress. I think The Chosen portrayed this scene absolutely perfectly! I am sooo impressed with the cast. I know that God chose them as well.
Mary is pulling a "pretty women" stint on the perfume shops owner .😅😅😅😅😅
I was thinking the same! ‘Big mistake! HUGE! I’ve got more shopping to do.’! 😂😂😂😂😂
Always loved Mary’s actions with Jesus. I KNOW that
I would want to always be with him, listen to every word
He said and to wash his feet with whatever the most
expensive thing I could get my hands on would seem
like the least I could do while satisfying my own need
to honour and worship him. Shalom.
The actress who plays Mary of Bethany has been really good. Starting last season when everybody was upset but Mary was clearly completely onboard with what Jesus was saying.
I have a small bottle of spikenard... It has a very pungent odor. I can relate to the whole room covering their noses when that giant bottle was opened.
What does it smell like?
@@priscillajimenez27 it has a very thick woody, spicy, damp soil kinda smell. Definitely not a woman's perfume.
@@teriross3779 oh wow 😬
I love the voice the actor Judas displays in in this scene. It’s reminds me a lot of Sméagol from the lord of the rings. This greedy ravenous approach to Judas reacting to thinking of the money he could have had.
THE ACTOR, LUKE HER IS A SWEET MAN. HARD TO PLAY THE MOST HATED MAN INHISTORY--BUT HE'S A FINE FINE ARTIST!
@@barbarabaldwin7120 And the most handsome guy ive ever seen in my entire life ngl and he's funny and his teeth are so white and his hair is so floofy...🥰😍
I think the woman anointing Jesus at Simon the Leper’s home was a different day because one account says it was six days before Passover and when Mary anoints his feet it says two days before. Oooooo welll played Dallas and The Chosen. Now I gotta get in my Bible again hahahaha 😂😂😂🙌🏼❤️📕
The anointing of Jesus is like King David marking the lamb, yes?
That's what The Chosen tied it into
but that never happened. It's not in the Bible but Dallas put it in.
@@workinprogress-ye5or The writers are making certain that the audience understands the pastoral reference : The Christ is the lamb of God.
@@ladybarbarapinsonartist431 yes but they shouldn't make up a ritual that a Rabbi never heard of or isn't in the Bible or Torah. There is enough significance without it.
@@workinprogress-ye5or reminder- "The Chosen " is not a documentary; it is entertainment based upon the many facets of both Judaism and Christianity, as well as first century life, meant to draw people closer to the life of Jesus. I am not one to comment nor debate on social platforms. I simply answered the question that was asked. There are no shoulds; storytelling within the medium of film is limited in time and scope, thus there are creative decisions which must be decided in order to unify the story lines.
Even in today’s world, we will always have the poor. 😔
Money is the root of all evil. I’d rather be poor and have Jesus than be rich and have nothing.
@rochelle2269 slight misquote of that verse. “The love of money, is the root of all evil” omits a pretty big difference. God uses people with money all the time.
@@rochelle2269 Even more than that I'd like to be rich enough to give it all away!!
Or as Moses says in Torah, “the poor will not cease from the land…”
I love Mary, sister of Laz! She performed this role so believably! So hard to imagine what it would've been like to experience the death and return to life of her brother...only to be overwhelmed with the reality of who Jesus really is and the meaning of all of this.
Imagine thinking that anointing GOD with priceless oil is a "waste".
The actress that has Played Mary of Bethany has done an AWESOME JOB!!!!!! The emotion of it all . the highs of 1st seeing Jesus to the low of preparing his feet for burial. This was a great scene. Thank you for going over this.
great scenes with Mary ...... and Jesus. I could feel the devotion and faith
Just being real here, I wanted to have the Sons of Thunder adjust Judas' attitude 😉
Poor Luke Dimyan. I hope he doesn't take peoples hate toward Judas in the Chosen personally
I think the actress that plays Marry absolutely killed this role!! I felt every emotion that she revealed when she wept at Jesus feet. This is SO SO Powerful!

Re Mary putting the money on the counter and taking the perfume - when you know you have completed the barter that is what you do even today. I’ve done this when I bought a rug in Jerusalem.
Your content is EXACTLY what I was looking for after binge watching season 4.❤
I love Mary's act of worship. I would so love to have the opportunity that she was given....worshipping the King of the Universe ❤
You gotta admit, what Mary B did was pretty radical. Even today it would seem pretty wierd..
Yeah very true lol. Though I’m not sure how I would act if Jesus in the flesh was in front of me.
@@TheChosenSleuth Yes, Brandon, and especially after he raised your brother from the dead. FROM. THE. DEAD! I'd have bought the oil.
@@TheChosenSleuth Especially if you knew he was God.
One of my MOST FAVORITE scenes!!!!!
I think the actress playing Mary of Bethany did a superb job. I also like how they panned some of the people to show their reaction. When Jesus says you won't always have me with you, you see Lazarus sit down as he knows Jesus is going to die. Mother Mary also looks shocked and sad as she too knows what is going to happen to him.
But I also felt sad that Shamel was so close to understanding Jesus and this just tipped him back to not understanding or even wanting to.
Another thing, Jesus "leave her alone" comment was the first time he spoke harshly and commandingly to judas. His voice was raised and definitely a command was given forcefully.
Apothecaries would have fragrances and other kinds of mixtures to holistically treat or help you or your environment.
Catherine is a great actress and in all of her scenes gives 110%! ❤
i love listening to you and explaining bit by bit. watching and listening to you many of this is coming back. we are now at church working on the book of mark (study). this to me can also be part of study as well, when we forget the words of GOD and remind us of what we need to remember
Marvelous discourse. Well done!
Great performances, especially the actress who plays Mary. Thank you for the break down.
I don't think Mary needed to cover her hair - in her own house!! She wasn't out in public.😮
True plus they're like family in her house
The faith and glorification that Mary made to God through Jesus is remarkable!!! Absolutely heart wrenching! ❤
Love the way this brings the Scriptures to life!
I don’t think it sounds like coins. I think it sounds like a rattle snake tail. 🐍
Well he is a snake 🐍
Im a new subscriber. I love your channel & the Chosen.i like the way you explain each scene. It is very helpful.
Thank you! ✝️
I like the little bit that a Chinese actor was cast as the perfume merchant. The haggling is so on point. And yes, I’m Chinese so I can say that haha.
Can we talk about the perfume merchant's performance too though? "Top Shelf" lol She really did an amazing job too! THOSE FACIAL EXPRESSIONS said a thousand words!! I hope Dallas uses that actress in future projects! I love that the Chosen always choses to display historically cultural representation on screen. Catherine Lidstone was chef's kiss as well. ^_^
Yes! I absolutely love the actress who plays Mary of Bethany: Cathrine. She is most lovely, may God bless her.
Brandon, the Lazarus from the parable of the "Rich man and Lazarus" is not the same Lazarus, friend of Jesus. The Lazarus from the parable is a poor man, and it is a fictional character. Jesus did not use real life persons when using parables.
Thank you so much!
Interesting here that Jesus says nowhere in the Torah does it say a woman has to cover her hair ! This is all down to tradition also it’s interesting that Mary used her hair to wipe Jesus feet and not her head scarf making it more intimate!
Loved your breakdown. I noticed that the coin noise can be heard THREE times during this representing the 30 pieces.
Two things. First, I’m surprised that I have never heard anyone bring up the fact that, although he was the Lord, Jesus was a man, and he did not know everything that was coming all of the time… Everything that was going to happen before I did. It validates the fact that he absolutely was also a man living in the same human form that all others did. The second thing is that I don’t think that Judas was totally focused on money that he couldn’t swipe. I think it just added to his confusion with all of the other messages that he was not resonating with that Jesus was teaching. He just didn’t get it. Is this, adding to his lack of trust, and believe that he was already struggling with.
This scene is iconic already. The actress playing Mary of Bethany does it perfectly! She's an excellent actress and i love her explanation of how she prepared, "how do you get the essence of someone through a couple of passages in the Bible." She executed it perfectly❤
Catherine played a great part 👏 👍🏻 ❤🇺🇸 the entire scene was outstanding 💪🏼🏝🏖🇺🇸
Did mary know she was anointing him for burial?
not gonna lie, the purchasing of the spikenard scene was low key ASMR. other than that, couldn't think of anyone else who encapsulates 'telling what Mary of Bethany has done for Jesus wherever the gospel is proclaimed in her memory' than the actress who played her. big up to Lidstone for putting up a 10/10 performance.
I love Mary of Bethany love ❤️ you’re show and thank you 🙏
You know it makes me wonder, Did Judas not know that Jesus knew all along that he was stealing? Could you imagine the heart break Jesus felt ? But Jesus also knew all along that Judas would betray him 😢 I wonder if Judas begged for forgiveness before dying, 💔 If he had any empathy I am sure that he did. He may be in heaven, we won't know until we get there ❤
He will be in the 2nd resurrection. Ezekiel 37 with all humanity who have never known God.
We won’t see it in the Chosen of course, but I too have hope that Judas will get his redemption arc eventually. ❤
@Hello.Bethany I feel like Judas felt guilt and regret for what he did to Jesus, he was so confused as to what Jesus was there to do 😪
Interesting...
A gram of silver today is about $1
A denarius was 4.5 grams, or $4.50 USD.
So, a year's wage back then was $1350... that's wild
Either silver is greatly undervalued, or the mining process really reduced the price of silver.
Most of the ancient economy was bartering except for consumer goods like this so it's hard to speculate today's cost of it
So what he said about a Years wage (today which is $32,000) is more accurate in terms of the actual significance of the purchase.
Which is a bargain to anoint God's feet
Her face ...looking at Jesus ...as she honors his feet, is her finest acting moment. It is incomparable.
This was my FAVORITE scene at the oil cleanse of Jesus feet. The camera movements and acting was so on point.
Mary is always at Jesus feet!
Mary must be from NJ! (I am, so no hate, please. Born and raised but living in my 8th state.)
Ecstatic worship on the part of Mary of Bethany. I never wanted to give TWO CENTS to act any scene I have ever seen, but I would pay a LOT of money to act this part. She is fantastic!
Beautiful scene
Even nowadays you go to a jewelry store and they have gems that are only sold to the richest of the rich.
Loved the scene with the Oriental merchant! I think they would’ve called China “Cathay” back then, but I’m not sure.
I remember reading that Mary first wept over his feet and washed them with her tears, dried them with her hair, and then anointed them with the perfume.
I love the acting of Mary also
Solid season all the characters are 💯!
I like the "top shelf" comment 🙂
Love this video and yes I love this Mary actress ❤❤ She is awesome
She is amazing!! I love this scene!!
Love how she raised her eyebrow
Another reason i love to watch these are because of things i might miss. I'm thinking where is he getting there's 100 dinari in each bag 😂 then mary brings out the third bag and says 300.
I read a study years ago that suggested that Simon, a Pharisee who was healed of leprosy, was the uncle of Lazarus and the sisters. It was indicated that since the parents of the three siblings were never mentioned, that it was this Simon who raised them, and that Simon may have played a part in the sin that Mary was guilty of. Yes, the author suggested that Simon may have raped Mary as a young girl and that Jesus knew of this and scolded Simon instead of Mary. It was at Simon's home that this was supposed to have taken place, just after Lazarus was raised, as Lazarus was one of the guests.Jesus chastised Simon because Simon had neglected to have Jesus's feet washed when he entered the building. Among other neglects.
Hey hey Brandon. Della Warren here
Love it. And then shumel thought he was doing Jesus a favor but it’s all part of his plan
I would have said, “Is this liquid enough for you…. Oh yes, it possible, the King is at my house…..😅😅
The seller was probably used to Romans and Sadducess.
Sadducees
Yeah, Mary’s actress was amazing
I don't know if Dallas, the writers, and the composers would be this methodical, but it might be interesting to see between Season 4 and Season 5 just how many coin drops occur in relationship to Judas and if they add up to 30. That would be a super Easter Egg.
This is such a cool, revealing many people's thoughts scene. In a parallel gospel, Simon the blind man (whom Jesus also healed) was sitting on the other side of Lazarus. This is what gave Mary this excellent idea. As only God can, Jesus has power over death and sickness, so needed to be praised, which turned out as an anointment for burial.
Jesus is Lord !!
Hello Brandon
Scripture says that Mary was in Simon the Pharisee’s house when this occurred. Luke 7:36-50
Are you going to talk about season 5
Catherine is great in The Chosen. So beautiful.
That's what I'm talking about. That's an excellent use of artistic license. When Mary said her line, though not in the bible, but added more to her character which is recognizing Jesus for Who He really is. And that's because she always spend time to listen to Him whenever He's around, contrary to what Martha was doing before. One thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that part, which will not be taken away from her. The revelation of Jesus Christ as King of the universe!
10:03 it’s been said that she in a way is anointing him before his death & burial
You can buy 1oz of spikenard essential oil online for $22,000.
The scene was literally taken from the scripture; in Luke 7:36-49, we meet Simon the Pharisee and the 'sinful woman' who placed a bottle of expensive perfume on Jesus's feet.
This is exactly what happened here, and some other versions tell us that this woman was Mary of Bethany (John 12:1-8). We know that The Chosen likes to mix stories (like with the Centurion's servant and the King's servant's son). The name Shmuel comes from the same word as Simon. Why did they change their name? Probably because we already have two Simons in the series, but that is more coherent compared to him being Saul/Paul; that has nothing to do with it.
I would have liked to see a longer dialogue between Shmuel and Jesus.
I've just thought of something. Didn't they recline when they dined back then?
this is an amazing scene! Can anyone point me towards the scene when Judas is talking with ? his business mentor? about reinvesting a % of the $ for the cause? Or does the scene show Judas wanting some of the $ for personal aggrandizement? I got confused
Nope my node is curios also
Note how Judas calls an act of worship and love towards Jesus a "waste" 😮
With respect - Lazarus going to heaven (Abraham's busom) is a totally different story. But even if it's not, then it would refute Lazarus being wealthy because the Lazarus in that story was very poor.
