Random fact: I was watching A Bug’s Life the other day and realized Negan is basically Hopper.
I can kinda agree with that but negan has some grit. I dont think he could go back to savior negan but left to his own devices he could handle his own just fine.
He was a sadistic bully having the time of his life in a world where there are no rules and the physically strong survive.
Dude was one of the best & most terrifying comic book villains I've ever seen. I love his development throughout the show a lot too tho.
wont be another villain like s7 negan, every scene with him felt unpredictable, like nobody was safe from him.
There is no arguably. He WAS by far the most captivating character. It wasnt even close.
Idk they worked with the governor pretty well, and the overall show was better then too
Rick is a literal equal to Negan
Agreed.. if someone who comes close to him its Daryl Dixon.
I think Negan is what the Governor wished he was back in season 3. I think Simon is somewhat a reflection of The Governor except Simon lacked a silver tongue.
They both wanted to be king of the new world, but the Governor wanted the people to love him and believe he was a good person, and rebuild an image of the old world (he would have loved the Commonwealth). Negan only wanted total obedience, through love or more likely fear. He was not trying to recreate the old world, but a new and brutal feudal society that could survive the new world, but it was a flawed system.
Simon is basically the governor without the speaking abilities except Simon was physically better than the governor bigger stronger better at fighting witch is why I laugh when people think the governor could beat negan the governor was a good fighter but not that good in comparison to negan and the characters we have now
@@childeaterieatkidz4208 "Simon is basically the governor without the speaking abilities." Yes that's what the term "A silver tongue" means. It means a person who speaks well. I don't know where you get the idea that Simon or Negan are better fighters than the Governor.
@rickpowers3677 um I get that idea cause governor never fought a fair fight with anyone he only fought injured people or had them jumped merle dixon governor had him jumped by 6 dudes rick he only fought rick when rick was shot in the leg and tired out Martinez he snuck up behind him with a golf club while Martinez was drunk.. we litterly NEVER saw the governor participate in a fair 1v1 so yes negan and Simon are WAAAAAY beyond the governor when it comes to physically fighting a fair fight and being able to win. The governor only ever ambushed injured and disoriented people or had them attacked by his men I was just pointing a fact out bro no need to get all mad over it.
@rickpowers3677 plus the governor fights to crazy and spends his energy to fast just like simon and as we saw negans damn good at dodging and delivering devastating punches and he's good at getting his enemy on the ground so he can finish off the kill and negan doesn't need 12 dudes to help him like the governor does so yes negan is by far way better than the governor when it comes to fighting the governor doesn't even try to dodge hits he just goes in blind rage hoping he'll win that doesn't always work when your going up against someone that's more focused and calm like negan the governor would spend all his energy trying to go full sicko and negan would just keep on dodging till the governors spent then negan would do to the governor what he did to simon.
Fun fact: Negan and Lucille's song "You Are So Beautiful" is actually the same tune Negan whistles. If you sing the first lyric, the note change from "...So" to "Beautiful.." are the same notes whistled by the Saviors. Another reason to prove your point of Negan failing to cope with the loss of his wife.
Sherry probably had the best take on Negan and his leadership style. She and Dwight weren't exactly good people either, as they betrayed Daryl even after he returned to help them. But in her letter she reflects that living with the Saviors wasn't better than being dead. Under Negan, her husband she once loved became a dark, cruel person, while she herself ended up in a harem - both out of necessity to survive, yet at the cost of their conscience. I think this speaks for most Saviors. They didn't want to be there or do the things they did - they only obeyed under the threat of pain and terror. Negan and his twisted system changed people into animals in the process. It's ironic how he coped by thinking he was saving people, calling the place Sanctuary, when in reality he enslaved them and it was a prison.
Yep. There's layers to Negan, but you absolutely cannot call him a good man. He's a villain, albeit a dynamic one. You can't rule people through fear and the threat of extreme violence forever.
@@nomad9584 That wasn't what he was doing though. He was re-establishing society along a historically successful model. In another ten years, The Saviours regime would have established a semi autonomous federation of self sufficient settlements, with trade links to other outlying settlements, sharing resources and skills just like early medieval feudalism.
Negan didn't 'rule' people through fear and violence, he led people by being able to offer them protection, shelter, and community when everything else had fallen apart. Negan's innate leadership skills made him leader.
And as a leader, he was better than any of them. Rick's leadership skills and poor decision making almost got everyone killed, time after time. And I'm not hating on Rick, but psychologically, he's been far too close to the edge for anyone to have to rely on said good judgement.
@@nodiggity9472Historically successful? Every empire built on slavery and oppression either crumbles under its own weight, or ends in fiery revolt. Success does not equal moral, and one of the main themes of TWD is how aspects of the old world sucked. The apocalypse should be an opportunity to reform, not to repeat the worst of humanity. Negan is a great example of history repeating itself.
@@nomad9584ruling through violence has worked in North Korea for 70 years.
I heard that on the comics he explains that he wears the leather jacket because its difficult for zombies to bite thru leather.
I'm so glad you're covering The Walking Dead villains. Too many channels sleep on this legendary show's antagonists. They all deserve a full analysis video for their psychological complexities. Wonder if you'll cover the Termite Cannibal leader Gareth.
Is that from Fear the Walking Dead?
@@inthemindofavillain no, he's the leader of terminus. he's the guy rick kills with a red machete
@@thefuturefilmmaker1602"you'd do this to anyone, right? Besides, I already made you a promise"
@@inthemindofavillain I’m wondering if you’ll be covering beta. But no, he the minor villain after the prison. There’s not really much to say. A group came and took over terminus. And that convinced him that it’s better to be brutal. And they all became cannibals. But he underestimates Rick.. but not making sure the entire group was there
You were incorrect right out of the gate. Lucille didn't kill herself because she thought Negan abandoned her lol she killed herself to save him, she knew she would weigh him down and get him killed in the new world, she was gonna die regardless. She did it for him.
I think that he was referring to what Negan thought was the cause of her suicide, not the actual reason.
Was about to say the same.
thank you, I started looking for a comment that said this the moment i saw it
Watching these he gets alot wrong
Negan was my favorite character in the show. To me he would have been the most realistic person to meet in times like that.
Wish we got a spin off that started off with Negan as the protagonist and In The Mind of A Villain would be doing an entry on Rick.
I wouldn't say he's living a life of luxury but it is at the expense of others, its more like surviving at the expense of others. A good psychological analysis of a fictional character. I see the bat, Lucille, as his representation of strength just as his wife Lucille was his source of strength. That persona of strength is transferred to the bat. That's why when he escapes, that's his first priority, to try and regain that strength. Just to realize that it just represents the strength he has in his memory of Lucille but it's definitely a coping mechanism.
The standard of luxury isn't our current era. It's the era of the apocalypse. So compared to everyone else on TWD, negan is living a luxurious life.
Tbh That’s what you need in an apocalypse, that cult leader mindset is needed. Whether you trick people into thinking your a god or your just that charming that people trust your leadership. It’s honestly a good trait to have
And his character development has gotten even better on the new dead city show with maggie

Great video negan is one of my favorite characters from the walking dead. Unlike governor and Shane Negan actually found a way to be good.
I like the way the comics handled it better because Negan admits that Rick was right whereas he just makes excuses for himself in the show (granted, Rick's group killed a lot less Saviors to begin with in the comics which changes things). But yeah, Negan did what the other villains couldn't, but I think that's because Negan truly believed that he was doing the right thing even though he was going about it the wrong way whereas both Shane and The Governor had already gone off the deep end and couldn't come back.
The reason why I like Negan the most is that he instills the fear that most people have failed to accomplish. Most people would do out of pocket things such as rape, cannibalism or even killing randoms all the time. I know that Negan does have strangers killed at times but it's like a domino effect. You take what you deserve. Negan does believe people are a resource but the way he goes about it is that if you disrespect me, I'll disrespect you even harder. Negan DOES NOT allow insubordination and loves to physiologically torture his victims to his subjective abuse to keep them in line. Negan is not a physcopath or a sociopath, he's a strategic and charismatic asshole. Negan has always had that " dog " in him or like Joaquan Phoenix said as Joker in 2019 film, " Joker " to Maury out of frustration " going werewolf. " Negan was still hesitant to evolve himself into a monster until Lucille's death (Negan's wife) and being treated like a bitch by that one guy who threatened his livelihood if he didn't forfeit over the information to where he was getting the medical supplies for his cancer-riddened wife. Those events turned Negan into the tyrant he needed to be. Negan killed Abraham because Abraham did not fear Negan at all and Glenn to send a message to not fuck with him, as him saying that he is a man of his word after the 2nd warning to not mess around with him or you'll find out what'll happen next. Negan's actions at times can be considerably questionable but at heart, he is the epiphany of what it means to rule and having others serving themselves under your thumb. We all love or hate Negan but we must fathom over the abundant fact of how outstandingly clever and majestic Jeffrey Dean Morgan is at bringing this character to life from the comic panels. I loved seeing Negan on the big screen and how he acts from his introduction to the end of Season 11 as it most definitely wrapped up his character. I wish they had shown him putting flowers on Lucille's grave as he had did in the comics but nonetheless, the head nod to Daryl perfectly wraps up his story arc for me honestly. A man that has experienced so much from confrontations to war to meeting his match to his downfall is the perfect embodiment of what it means to survive in this broken world. There won't be another villiain like Negan because Negan is the one and only leather jacket Lucille-swinging badass of the zombie apocolypse.
Love this summary, I highly agree with your points, ain’t no other negan other than negan!
I always marvel at people who openly admit that negan is a monster and a tyrant while trying to make a point that he's not a tyrant and not a monster.
The people at the outpost weren’t innocent, some people at the sanctuary are innocent, the sanctuary is the home base, everyone lives there, the top and bottom, lieutenants and bottom tier workers, but in order to be at the outpost you need to earn it, to be negans soldier and trusted you have to be a killer, you have to bad, you have to be like negan, the people at the outpost had to get there hands dirty, now people’s defense could be that in this world everyone has to be dirty but negans people have a choice, to live like shit but be morally sound, or to abandon morals and rise up, this people made their choice to be murders and thieves, you don’t get to the top without killing innocent.
you are morally:) correct, but factually wrong. remember that Aaron's daughter is from one of the outposts.
@@linaskranauskas from one of those outposts, this one doesn’t have any one but killers, they literally have photos hanged of negans victims
@@andrewflores5666 yes. your comment was about all the outposts. And I'm 100 per cent with Rick on clearing the outposts :)
People always forget that the Saviors killed every male over ten years old in Oceanside. Oh, they're definitely good guys, I don't know how Hilltop asked for help getting rid of them.
That was actually Simon, and Negan never knew a thing about it until after it happened. That was when Negan reigned Simon in to keep an eye on him. Then he set a trap for Simon to challenge his authority in front of everyone, and killed him. In front of everyone.
Negan as played by JDM is definitely charismatic and entertaining, but I have no sympathy with those who confuse that with "anti-heroism." He was genuinely villainous. The people he kept in the Sanctuary were no better than slaves. He took genuine pleasure in inflicting physical and psychological pain. That's why I never bought his redemption. Cruel, violent narcissists rarely if ever change.
100%. Even if the story was told from his perspective and he was the protagonist, he’s still an anti villain at best.
@@inthemindofavillain I think your point in the video about his selfishness was hugely significant. Ultimately everything has to revolve around and conform to him, no matter the costs.
@@benwolk6494if his wife was alive, would Negan still be Negan, since he said he is selfish and coward
@@preciousotoakhia9789 Lucille appealed to Negan's better nature. The narcissism and cruelty were there, of course, but I'd assume Lucille would have kept them in check if she had survived. It's an interesting question.
Wow. Rick got almost everyone in every civilization he encountered killed. Rick killed dozens of Negans men and only one person paid the price. He uses the bat so he doesn’t get into a numbers game. Losing every life should be a big deal. The only thing Neegan did that was unrealistic was taking a harem. No leader undermines his keys to power y taking a man’s wife. Everything Neegan did showed great leadership in harsh times. People confuse his style with the actual results of his leadership. He rebuilt civilization at a 50% tax rate… until Rick broke everything
I genuinely enjoy channels like this and The Vile Eye😭😭😭😭helping me write
Awesome analysis with such keen, mature insight.
FINALLYYYYY THE VIDEO I'VE BEEN REQUESTING FOR SO LONG
Up until Rick was still alive Negan was considered a villain but since he was captured it's like someone else .
Nice that you made this for Negan. I hope to see one for Alpha.
Negan is more of an anti-hero than an actual villain. We see him as a villain because we're introduced to him at a time when he was trying to catch a band of killers who had murdered a bunch of his people while they slept. He's not evil, just supremely capable.
Hmm anti-villain at most imo, in light of the way he treated those under him. But yes I do see how he had to take some measures against Rick's group too.
@@inthemindofavillain He really did too. Up until that point, all we knew of Negan is what we're told by Gregory, a cowardly, but ambitious man. The Saviours are painted as plundering brigands, taking whatever they liked at gunpoint, bleeding communities dry, yada yada yada, by Gregory, who's wheedling and access to drugs, persuaded Rick's group to carry out an assassination attack on the Saviours. The rest is WD history.
But the story was paced just fast enough not to be focused on the details, but still layered with consequences that we see playing out even now, 15 years later.
One of Negan's best qualities is the way he can effortlessly assume the mantle of control, simply by being able to. He takes responsibility as easily and naturally as most people take a nap. But he never seeks position, and he has no problem when he doesn't have authority. And he always, without fail, accepts responsibility for the consequences of his actions.
.
The moral quandary of this is what I think Maggie is struggling with. Glen was okay. He was a good guy. But he made a terrible decision. When the attack on the Saviours took place, Glen had never killed anyone. Not in anger, not in self defence, not ever. In six seasons. Then when he actually does kill someone, it's cold blooded murder. He cuts the throat of a sleeping man.
.
And Negan was the direct consequence of that night. And within the context of TWD World, Negan was Justice personified. He took personal responsibility for delivering Justice for *his* people. He's not just a casually murderous tyrant, he's a true leader. Just as Rick was a leader. Consequences, like Herpes, never go away.
@@inthemindofavillainI mean even the way he treated people under him was strict but fair for an apocalypse he had actual rules he would enforce no matter the rank of his men even if they attempted a "rule break" on someone he took prisoner such as the scene with Sasha compare Negan to what the governor did with Maggie he truly is more of an Anti-hero.
You can call the saviours a cult but it's more so a cult of personality with the pledge of loyalty being not to different to the pledge of allegiance in the USA or the pledge of loyalty to the King/Queen in the UK

A leather jacket like negan wears is very intimidating, if you think about it, the only ones that wear a jacket like his is bikers and metalheads, two groups that people find intimidating
Negan isn't intimidating. He's dangerous. And he's capable. That's why people are afraid of him. He's a powerful man, and everything about him, from his posture to his voice conveys this without even the suggestion of a threat. He uses intimidation when he has to, but he's not a bully. He doesn't have to bully or intimidate people for them to realise he's extraordinary.

He did not just call him "Coral" 😂

No, as we saw on the episode 2of dead city we know that all this bad guy evil way is just an act to control and scare ppl
I think that is 100% Negan backtracking in his “development”. He has to stop passing the buck every time his actions are too harshly reflected back at him. And even if it were an act (definitely wasn’t), he did not have to choose that persona. Ezekiel didn’t.
@@fallgirl07 so you think that he will go on a war again maybe Maggie again turning back to the old Negan? I personally dont think so at all.
@@Steger13 Maybe a little but I doubt it will happen in any meaningful way. I was speaking more towards people believing what he said was the actual truth versus what he tells himself is the truth to deal with the guilt. The persona thing, the whole “how many fathers have you killed” thing. All of that is deflecting, to me at least. I honestly think TPTB mean for us to take it as the honest truth, which saddens me.
Negan has already admitted before that he enjoyed doing those things and even hurting people. Maybe it started as an act, or he exaggerated his traits, but it was all him.

Negan is my favorite Villain from the snow even though he’s more of a Anti-hero his villain arc was very good in my opinion some fans give him way too much hate for no reason I love Negan and plus I love Jeffery Dean Morgan in general
I’d say Negan is a monster, but a controlled and calculating monster with standards and values.
Many men, including myself, can relate to the traits and mentality of the Negan character. You have to be cold and ruthless in this world in order to get results and you’re always going to gain enemies and rub people the wrong way for being that way. We’re not perfect or angels in this world, but neither is the world itself. You have to adapt to survive by almost any means necessary.
Trauma, specifically a trauma which changes the perception somebody has about the world, about society, and about morality. This is what creates a monster, leading somebody to reject the rules within society and rebel, choosing to break any rule they wish, or even setting their own rules to live by, and build their life based upon.
There is one great example of a trauma, one that can cause people this feeling of betrayal by the systems in place. This trauma is caused by false rape allegations, as the effect it can have will leave a person feeling conflicting emotions, changing how they feel and want to respond constantly due to the good memories they have of their accuser. Ah, anyway I’m rambling, to those who don’t believe me though? That’s how I feel, God the situation that unfolded around the whole thing led to a lot of people being hurt and cutting me off. The town I live is like a fucking graveyard. Now after my little rant, I shall bit you adeu.
That's a dumb take
Here's something you guys never thought about: Negan had set his dead wife on fire but as we've seen throughout the series, fire doesn't fully kill the walkers. If Negan were to visit his old house, she'll be there wanting to chomp on him
If you're interested just request a demo reel I'll make one using your words
I don't think his wife committed suicide because she thought he'd abandoned her. I think she was worried he'd get killed trying to find medicine for her, so she opted out to protect him.

I will always see Negan as a psychopath, no matter how much his fans defend him. Leaving aside the issue of whether Rick attacked him first (I consider it a mistake on the part of the scriptwriters, not the character; not only because he doesn't do it in the comic, but because it goes against everything we have seen of him throughout the series: Rick never attacks first), the truth is that Negan did the same on Hilltop, in the Kingdom and in Oceanside. It was his modus operandi: attack a community, kill some people to spread terror, and enslave the rest. He would have done the same thing in Alexandria, no matter what Rick did, or even if he had been eaten by cannibals and wasn't even there. Plus, it's not just that he kills people, he enjoys it, he laughs at the way Glenn's eyeballs fall out of his face... the kind of thing only a psychopath would do.
But more importantly, the way he treats his own people: forcing them to kneel in his path, burning their faces if they were "disobedient", hoarding supplies and distributing them unfairly, prostituting women... Does anyone care? Imagine Rick burning Daryl's face because he did something he didn't like? Offering Maggie extra food if she fucks him, and then rubbing Glenn's face with "I'm going to bed to fuck your wife"? Keeping all the food while everyone else goes hungry?
Don't buy the Redemption Arc from him. It is not believable that someone like that would change, and besides, he never seems sorry for what he did. He continues to maintain that he was right.
Noz he does not still think he was right.
I don't see Negan as a villain. Villainous? Definitely, but I see him as an antagonist.
I can do it better and for reasonable rates
What crap, there is no redemption of this character. Even the redemption arc is self serving.
The only crap here is this bull crap -------------^
I don’t care what anyone says. He was pure evil. Someone who can crack another person over the head with a bat and laugh as they die in front if their loved ones is evil. Rick could never laugh while killing someone in front of their loved ones. Rick only kills when necessary and doesn’t take joy in it.
