"No longer want to use the motif of 'raising awareness' as a justification for inserting myself into the misery of others for the public spectacle." Other content creators need this mentality shift.
The problem with this is assuming that every content creator wants to make a spectacle. "Raising awareness" will never be a bad thing, as there are always people who just don't know much about the plight of others in the world. To act this way means this video itself would be hypocritical in that it's clearly doing the same exact thing. The way people are trying to turn things like "raising awareness" into a negative is just bad, it's only going to hurt people and make people care LESS, not more. Considering how many people are seeming to celebrate this video, that inherently would be criticizing the entire audience, acting as if this is just the same entertainment as watching a movie or playing a video game, the implication here being those things have no true value in people's minds and hearts (which is also bullshit) This sounds like something well-intentioned but ultimately misconceived. As someone who was homeless my first time while I was still a minor, treating these people, both those living in these tunnels and those watching, as if they don't actually care is NOT the way to go, you're just going to piss off those who DO give a shit and end up possibly causing harm in terms of people like this getting help from others Who here has been homeless before? If so, do you think "raising awareness" should be treated as a bad thing? Definitely a "The road to hell.." effect that ideas like that will end up having. I genuinely don't understand why people want to feel holier-than-thou, there are SO many people who will "want to help" and then degrade other people around them who are doing the same thing, or can totally "support" a group in question and then insult the efforts of others who are also supporting them, like fucking what lmfao do you even realize how much you could ACTUALLY do if you, uh maybe, worked *together* Some people truly care more about the appearance of helping people than really doing it, so to start randomly lashing out at others doing the same makes you seem like you're in the former camp, not the latter
The problem is he says this but he still does it. Informative as the documentaries are, part of the intrigue is the unfortunate spectacle of tragedy that cannot be avoided to cover the relevant subject matter. It's honestly a pointless virtue signal from Andrew and you can both love Andrews work and think Andrew isn't above the fray in this manner. Before you call me wrong, just think about it. He does a lot of documentaries or content pieces about people who are deeply suffering and some of the more fcked up places/situation in America. I don't fault him for wanting to cover this stuff though, again it's just a pointless virtue signal for to say that
My boyfriend and I met Drew on Thanksgiving of 2020 during a roadtrip through Vegas. He was playing Pink Floyd and the Beatles on a bridge on the strip. His playing struck us both, so we paused and spent over an hour listening to him play, dancing, and talking with him. He introduced himself as "Orange, like the color not the fruit". We shared some weed, bought him water, and in return he gave us his guitar pick. We still talk about "Mr. Orange" all the time because his talent, selflessness, and free spirit stuck with us over the years. When this video popped up in my feed I almost couldn't believe it was him. Thank you for sharing his music and this story on your platform!
So you bought him water..water..how very very kind. I am poor myself but I easily give 20£ to homeless on the streets, especially when they try to earn it by singing or whatever . I often say to my husband how is this possible that my reach bosses for last 15 years were giving me 20£ gift for Christmas and in the same time I managed with my tiny salary give away much more to people I don't even know. I am just saying this to make those who read realise you can afford to help others more than you think and your help is really not so huge as you picture it in your mind. Like I would never give someone only water ,at least I would ask if they need a sandwich. And weed never ever in my life, never had one and never will ,and making it as a friendly gesture is just not right. But maby you just did not mentioned that you rewarded his talent appropriately, maby I am just sensitive.
I saw another comment about drew but some people were being negative, but I felt the same way that song really touched me. He really felt those words he was singing can't help but make you sit back and realize maybe we dont have it so hard sometimes.
I'm from the UK, my sister used to be an air hostess for British Airways. She took me to Vegas with her for a trip. The last night we argued as sisters do 😅 i ended up walking back to the hotel alone at 6am. As i walked past a homeless woman, i felt so bad i only had 2 dollars on me. She invited me to sit with her and I'm so glad i did. Shortly after, her friend with a guitar walked by and joined us. He started playing and singing. It honestly was the best memory of Vegas, they were so happy to share their stories and the look of commuters walking past was priceless.
Andrew made a 1.5 hour documentary to find one social worker who could explain the entire problem and more in 10 minutes. That guys interview was incredibly insightful.
Also why we need more social workers instead of police. The far-right wants to joke about social workers replacing police and being useless against violent crime. Yet violent crime is rare in the day-to-day of reality in this country. A lot of cops only see a handful of violent crimes in their career, and most of them spend 30+ years without ever having to fire their weapon. Sounds like to me that we need to remove police and start bringing in social workers. We could solve A TON of social issues this way, even do more to prevent violence.
He explained the draw of being outside of society In a way I think a lot of us can relate to. That idea of dropping everything and never having to pay rent/mortgage or get somewhere on time. The thing is that such a life gets old fast.
Yeah, I felt pretty bad for the tunnel folks until that interview. Turned out they all just come up with excuses for why they're still homeless, because help is constantly offered to them at no cost. When that guy said getting an ID for them is one of the easiest parts of the process, it pretty much nullified most of the rest of the documentary.
@@wck But it didn't. He still recognizes that there is a really hard mental block not being addressed at the center of it all. Just because the list of steps to recovery aren't hard does not mean that it isn;'t still hard

@@lamp7746 Do you really think it's that easy for homeless drug addicts to get employment and also afford to live in a city that is notoriously expensive to live in. They need help first to get them on a stable life path so that they can reintegrate into society, which many of these people genuinely want to do
The last man you interviewed leading that recovery program is probably one of the most levelheaded, reasonable, understanding people on this planet. This was amazing work and an eye opening documentation about not only the tunnels and addiction, but the way the human mind reacts to anxiety provoking situations and how it reacts to change. Amazing work.
There's always something that feels off about these kinds of people though. Like the reason why a lot of homeless people prefer to stay homeless is because the capitalist dystopia they live in has nothing to offer them. Just look at these guys, they're old and if they ever do "recover," they'll end up on the lowest rungs of society, working a miserable job until they die because they don't have a retirement plan. It's hard to say they're saving anyone because they're just reintroducing them to the society that left them for dead on the street and never treated them well in the first place. These "care workers" should just leave these people be. If they really wanted to help them, they'd try overthrowing the capitalist oligarchy that forces them to live in sewers because they don't want to be a slave to some capitalist psychopath for the rest of their lives.

As a social worker myself, that realization that Andrew comes to about Glenn not magically changing right away after getting the ID, that's something you get so used to in this work. And if you don't get used to it, you burn out. We can't save everyone from them self. I tell new staff, you are a passenger in the car with your client, they are behind the wheel, you can give them directions and use your gps, but they are in that driver seat. And like the shine a light director said, I can give an ID to everyone on the street, but will that solve the problem for them? no. Love this doc and the insights into this world. thank you
Damn my mom is a social worker and has told me the same things multiple times. Just like JC said to save yourself you really have to believe you can be saved!

It is hard to break free from the reality that you have created. Try it. Try making a new habit. It could be fun, but it could be bad depending on your choices ( and if you’re actually in the right mindset for the choice). Despondency will change the way your brain works, trauma changes you, bad luck changes you, fear of the unknown changes you, pile all that on and often it is followed by shutting down, completely broken down. Not knowing how to turn back on the light. People want to be ok, nobody wants to look at their problems, the mirror is unforgiving. And often it’s an ugly sight. And we will put ourselves with those who have similar problems and issues to dull the intensity of our true issues. “If everyone else has this problem it’s just a normal thing” is probably the mindset

Robert was a fascinating interview. As someone working in the social services sector, i wish i had been shown this during my studies. Your video encapsulated almost the whole issue of homeless in an hour and a half. Well done
In 2015, I lived in a residential suburb of Vegas (Henderson NV). I befriended some Starbucks employees there, and one day during summer, my friend Stephen and I decided to bike the storm drains after he got done with work. They're kind of legendary to residents, and we all know how extensive they really are. Anyway, we decide to enter a storm drain at about 9pm, on bicycles, with some water and flashlights and snacks. About 30 minutes into our ride, we encountered some teens shooting off roman candles. It looks super cool watching a firework travel into the depths of darkness... lighting it up briefly. About an hour in, and we encounter a "desert madman", mindless walking the tunnel. NO flashlight. He was fried out of his mind, and I don't think he noticed us. He was actually pretty scary, and I started getting second thoughts about going further... but the tunnels REALLY do just keep you wanting to explore. So we did. About 15 minutes later, we came across a very elaborate "home".. I'm talking TV, Rug, Carpet, Bed, cooking stuff, generator type stuff, shelving for food, all located next to a ladder near a pothole. probably for easy access. Imagine seeing a living room, but in a dark tunnel. Very surreal. about 2 hours in, and we could hear darkwave synth music coming from some direction, so we kept trying to find the source.. and it ended up being an underground rave of like ... goths lol. there were probably 10 or 15 people there, all looking like they were in some kind of cult. They DEFINITELY noticed us biking up on them, and I think they were as scared of us as we were to them. I think maybe 20 minutes or so after that, we encountered a "grocery store", with LOTS of random stuff for sale. Deodarant, water, snacks, shirts.. but no one was nearby. All Dollar store kind of items. There was a "pay here" box too. At about 3 hours in, we ate our snacks, took a break, and decided to turn around. I think we exited the tunnels at about 3am, WAY later than we anticipated.. I can't even recall how many deeply fascinating things we saw in those tunnels that night. Stephen sadly passed away a year later from a motorcycle accident, and I randomly think of that one surreal night we had years ago.. having a real life adventure together. Miss you Stephen!

@@googleuser298 if we guaranteed housing, and treated them like human beings every day until they once again feel human themselves, i think they can be saved. society treats them like less than animals and it becomes very easy to internalize that, its one of the many mental illnesses that just comes with homelessness and an abandonment from greater society. i remember when i was homeless i'd cycle between two modes of thinking. if i can be left to fall this far and no one bats an eye, why should i even try to reenter that society? if im broken, its still better than that. on other days i felt like everyone was right, im am not worth existing. and like the guy from the program said, you get used to what you know and these reasonings prevent people from taking action. but both these reasonings can be shattered if we just guaranteed safe basic housing, no requirements, no hoops to jump, no games to play.

He didn’t reupload they that unlocked it. I think they had purged the higher quality videos . I had to search deep to find someone else pointing out 360p
@@shrimpinpat Ah, I see. Regardless, it still damages the reach of a video, usually. I'm not sure why exactly it's in 360p, maybe that's still locked for some reason, or whatever, but it's up and that's the most important thing. Also, I think a lot of people are used to watching on their phones and just have quality on auto, so they're used to videos that are sometimes lower quality when Wi-Fi or Mobile Data is slower, or TH-cam has to buffer. So I'm guessing there are some people who just haven't noticed it's the only option yet.

Norway here! Getting IDs is hard here as well, but possible. You can get ID if you have a passport, and passport if you have ID. If you dont have a passport you need a birth certificate or any paper establishing your identity like bills or something from prior workplaces. Since 2013 you can also register for electronic ID which make you able to identify yourself to the government through the web and order ID there. We also dont have crazy waiting times for getting IDs. Since the police are the ones issuing IDs, they're also more helpful to solve the situation.

AGREED I work at the DMV in my state (not AZ) and he was RINGING that bell about how the people love to blame that ID or the DMV or that process in general, but he's so right, it's really easy to get your ID when you have your shit together, but if you don't, the system doesn't work for you. "No longer want to use the motif of 'raising awareness' as a justification for inserting myself into the misery of others for the public spectacle." Other content creators need this mentality shift.
indeed.
1:03:30
@SlyyderTime What exactly is Andrew doing here?
The problem with this is assuming that every content creator wants to make a spectacle. "Raising awareness" will never be a bad thing, as there are always people who just don't know much about the plight of others in the world. To act this way means this video itself would be hypocritical in that it's clearly doing the same exact thing. The way people are trying to turn things like "raising awareness" into a negative is just bad, it's only going to hurt people and make people care LESS, not more. Considering how many people are seeming to celebrate this video, that inherently would be criticizing the entire audience, acting as if this is just the same entertainment as watching a movie or playing a video game, the implication here being those things have no true value in people's minds and hearts (which is also bullshit)
This sounds like something well-intentioned but ultimately misconceived. As someone who was homeless my first time while I was still a minor, treating these people, both those living in these tunnels and those watching, as if they don't actually care is NOT the way to go, you're just going to piss off those who DO give a shit and end up possibly causing harm in terms of people like this getting help from others
Who here has been homeless before? If so, do you think "raising awareness" should be treated as a bad thing? Definitely a "The road to hell.." effect that ideas like that will end up having. I genuinely don't understand why people want to feel holier-than-thou, there are SO many people who will "want to help" and then degrade other people around them who are doing the same thing, or can totally "support" a group in question and then insult the efforts of others who are also supporting them, like fucking what lmfao do you even realize how much you could ACTUALLY do if you, uh maybe, worked *together*
Some people truly care more about the appearance of helping people than really doing it, so to start randomly lashing out at others doing the same makes you seem like you're in the former camp, not the latter
That’s rad.

😂😂😂 as a las vegas local who works on the strip and knows people that live in the tunnels I can tell you a majority of them don't want help 😂 the casinos throw out so much valuable things, they're literally underneath the strips , which means there minutes away from panhandling from people like you , then they go around the corner and get their fix. I love the direction the documentary took after Glenn got his ID. Of course, it was amazing that he got it at all. The focus wasn't all ID, it was also being self-determined to actually stop addiction, and that change was gradual. It kept the doc more grounded in reality rather than it being too "perfect happy ending".

Super dope story
Very cool story for sure, glad you got to experience something like that. Hopefully the people in there are doing well now.

@@googleuser298 if we guaranteed housing, and treated them like human beings every day until they once again feel human themselves, i think they can be saved. society treats them like less than animals and it becomes very easy to internalize that, its one of the many mental illnesses that just comes with homelessness and an abandonment from greater society.
i remember when i was homeless i'd cycle between two modes of thinking. if i can be left to fall this far and no one bats an eye, why should i even try to reenter that society? if im broken, its still better than that. on other days i felt like everyone was right, im am not worth existing. and like the guy from the program said, you get used to what you know and these reasonings prevent people from taking action. but both these reasonings can be shattered if we just guaranteed safe basic housing, no requirements, no hoops to jump, no games to play.

for real she seems like an actual angel.
55 is a good number!
Robert is a gem. I’m glad you highlighted him and the work he does.
Dude needs to go on JRE.

To all the Channel 5 team members, thank you for putting out this video. I volunteer with Shine a Light and a lot of the people that come out now have seen this video, the reach has been phenomenal for the organization. Thank you for humanizing the situation and shedding some much needed light on the city. As a Las Vegas resident and long time viewer, you inspired me to make my own video on the topic, keep up the good work on your journalism. Keep making the kind of content that people need to see 👍
I’m a Vegas resident, currently on vacation visiting my family out of country.
I will absolute contact crystal to help her (and her son) in their amazing work.
I can absolutely show up once a month with some snacks and supplies for those in need. Sobriety is a battle ❤
What a nice looking comment. So shiny and perdy.

The Shine A Light interview was so incredible. Robert is a really inspiring individual and I'm so glad he's out there doing that work

I love the final part of the documentary! A sober and realistic talk about social work.
The gentlemen being interviewed at the end, what an enlightened and generous soul. Honestly a beacon of light in this world.
Congrats to fox 5 for making this more popular. Its actually a blessing in disguise
In classic channel 5 fashion. I've learned more about the homeless in Vegas than I ever would have had the opportunity to learn about solely because of the stigmas that are placed on these people. Thank you for showing these people the respect they need!
The guy with the guitar has some talent. Good voice great song.
I was homeless when I was 18 and when he said the homeless get looked at differently it sent chills down my spine. Absolutely remember all my friends immediately cutting ties with me when I went to the streets. Only when I got back on my feet did my friends start talking to me again. Horrible feeling. Down at your lowest and everyone treats you like you'll never escape.
Everyone loves to say they're a good friend & will be there for you; then it actually matters and poof.
Friendship means little when it's convenient.
I call them Fair Weather friends, great when it is sunny but as soon as it gets cloudy in your life they are gone, makes me ask myself were they ever really friends?
Well maybe don’t be homeless
They were not your friends.
Hey Andrew, I am/was one of those who look at homeless people with a dehumanizing eyes. Your video really helps me see these individuals differently.
I've just enrolled in a part time volunteering in my local homeless shelter here in Montreal.
What you are doing has an impact and you can be proud. Have a good day.
Some of them like being homeless. There's actually plenty of help but they have to want it.
@@BettyWhite2171 True, that's why I think it's important to be there for those who actively try to get out of it.
@@BettyWhite2171 key word being "Some". if you can help ONE, that's already worth it. Giving up on people is very dangerous.
@@BettyWhite2171 You haven’t watched this video til the end if you still uphold this view.
@@BettyWhite2171 can you blame them? for some of them like boxer it's pretty much all they've known, the time where they weren't homeless was just them being abused, and all the support and community they have is in the streets. it's all a matter of perspective
One of the few things that I watch that doesn’t trigger my short attention span. I watch it start to finish without checking my phone. Great journalism.
real shit
Your soul knows when it's being exposed to bullshit, most shit we watch isn't relevant to our lives or important so it checks out and our monkey brain takes over. When something honest is talking to you the soul is awake and you got attention for days. That's what I think about it, most the stuff around us is bullshit these days, it's not just our attention span is bad.
