Peter-can you please try to go back to Appalachia-but specifically Marshall, N.C. It is a beautiful hidden away place, everyone worked so hard to build up the town-and then Hurricane Helene came and the French Broad River flooded and washed away the whole town. The community is full of folks who are amazing and are working tirelessly to rebuild the town.
In my humble opinion, this is one of the most important channels on TH-cam. Just spreading the word of real Americans helping other real Americans. When you’re in America, of course
Have to agree with you. Helping Americans and foreigners alike discover America. For info Peter has been featured quite a few times in the English newspaper the dailymail so word is getting around about the amazing work he is doing.
I have never been to America but that's America I know from movies and America I want to see with my own eyes one day. To be honest I'm only interested in small cities/towns and countryside.
Except Peter directs his viewers to cult leaders who r*pe horses, skinny dip with minors, get a 12 year old boy to circumcise him, and who has stolen another man’s wife. Yes, Titus Morris! So why does Peter keep the Titus videos up here, not caring about all the innocent people who still go to that evil farm? Oh, and Titus and Stephanie grifted $250,000 plus from the viewers to ‘build a church’ but now they have changed it to building a house for Titus and Stephanie to live in!
As a Northern California native, I appreciate you sharing this. Most people in the world don't truly understand how vast and diverse California is. Everyone has an idea that it's all surfboards and movies, but the truth is that it has everything. Beaches, forests, mountains, deserts, cities, agriculture and people from all walks of life. Thanks for shedding a little light on what a wonderful (and challenging) place California is to live in.

I am blind, and this is how I travel. I hope you know what kind of service you are doing. What I love about these videos is you do so much talking and character building that I do not need to see the films themselves. I can just listen and learn. Thank you so so much! If you ever get the notion to describe things just a little bit more, that would be so grand. I don’t want you to get hung up on it, but thought I would put the idea in your mind.
The simple fact that a guy like Brett went to prison, while bankers that caused the subprime crash, and the pharmaceutical company employees that pumped OxyContin into the market while becoming millionaires, they are all free and rich. Tells you all you need to know about the way things really are.
What a cast of characters, a striving, resilient, farmer musician, a mystical artist, a pipe smoking woodsman with a whiskey smooth voice. Beautiful people, beautiful land.
Facts: Beautiful thickly forested coastal Northern California used to be the home of most heavily concentrated Native American population in California, as well as world's most concentrated Red Wood forest with an estimated 2 million acres of centuries-old rare red wood trees standing tall as lately less than two centuries ago. Today, less than one percent of Native Americans population survives and remains in a handful of reservations, while less than 50,000 acres of red wood trees survives and remains as the rest were cut down and shipped to build coastal cities such as San Francisco and Los Angeles. In California alone there were an estimated half a million Native Americans inhabited before Spanish arrived. Less than 5 % were hunter gatherers while an overwhelming majority settled down along oceans, rivers, creeks, lakes, waterways and grew agricultural stuff for food. After Spanish and Anglo conquest, after placing them in rancherias and reservations, less than 20,000 survived.

Absolutely! What an incredible man! I have great respect for him and his journey. He exemplifies the power of forgiveness in a person's life. Just look at him shine! Blessings to him, his family, and his community. 💕
This guy is a Humboldt County slumlord. Overcharging tenants for substandard housing with lead paint peeling off the walls that house numerous small rodents. When you think of issues contributing to the housing crisis in Humboldt County, think of Brett.
yes. dear man! You can tell he has suffered yet been seasoned & tempered by the experience. Those five years of incarceration made him go deeper inside of himself to draw upon his own deep, intuitive soul. It made him. I don't even know Brett but would be honored to have him as a friend, brother or neighbor. damn great voice, too.
Knowing her man to be innocent of what they accused him of, why wouldn't she be there and wait for him to come home. That's what true love is all about.❤💖

As a California native and truck driver who has seen most of the state, I am still amazed when I enter a remote and relatively unknown area. It truly is a magical place.
Peter, I think this was one of your best. I'm 75 and finding you channel 3 yrs ago has been one of the most enjoyable things i watch. Thank you 1000 times over for what you do. 🎉
This certainly was one of Peter's best. I feel so full and inspired by this story. It was better than anything Hollywood could produce. This was so very good.
This is my California. A home that never disappoints me. A camera can never do it justice...but it really does heal the soul. Those trees... The ocean... These people are for real.
Such a beautiful video! Even more what a beautiful soul! This young man has seen hard times and unfairness yet came out of it a gem! Californian born and raised. Living in the mountains builds your soul! Hard work but worth every step. Loved his song and music! Thank you. Feel so blessed by seeing this young man's struggle to heal through love of humanity. Blessings to him and his family! ❤
I once read of an Irish author who, for a time, lived in California. He eventually packed it up saying (I'm likely paraphrasing) "I needed to get out of there. My whole life there felt like I was on vacation". Now, that's paradise on earth! 😊
I am an avid TH-cam viewer and this is the best video I have ever seen! The fire and passion in Brett’s story of manifesting in prison and his deep and authentic sharing of his community and its characters was so special. The music video?! Icing on the cake. So deeply moving.
They say you can INTERPRET a lot about a man by his shoes, but I'm starting to realize you can LEARN a lot from a man who wears no shoes. Thanks for another journey into the amazing human perspective Peter!
Humboldt County native here!! It was such a magical place to grow up in as a kid. Lived on 16 acres and didn't have our first television until I was 5 years old. Grew up riding horses and showing chickens in 4-H. Coming home from school I was always immediately outside playing and exploring. This place definitely got us through the pandemic with being able to be outside in the forests and at the beaches. I've been following Peter for a few years now and was completely jaw dropped when I saw this post. We don't get a lot of exposure in this way. Thanks for sharing our neck of the woods Peter!
@@katstu2783 for it’s size Humboldt has an extraordinary amount of crime and because of the allowance of marijuana, kids are roaming around with blunts and doing meth. It’s a literal drug infested zombie apocalypse. For its size, Humboldt has the highest number of aids patients in California. Don’t let the barefoot fairies fool you into thinking that this is some wonderland of unicorns and pixie dust. It’s a dead zone and a miserable place to live.
I’m from Humboldt County. Backpacked the Marble Mountains many times. Camped at just about every redwood State park, swam in the Eel and Van Duzen rivers, and roasted hotdogs at umpteen beaches. Worked in Ferndale-my favorite job ever. My father worked in the lumber mill and my mom in the bank. Went hunting and fishing with Dad when I was little but never figured out until my 20’s that he never brought home a buck except the years he was laid off all winter. He loved the land…as do I. Forests, rivers, shorelines, cloudy clean skies….there is holiness in these.
From a native Californian, thank you for showing the world the uncomplicated, beautiful and peaceful side of California. I’m tired of defending my home state. I’ll just refer all the misinformed haters to this video.
This sort of channel is what television's original promise was. Inform, enlighten, educate, and for some, inspire. This video was time very, very well spent. Thank you Peter!!
I live in Poland, Europe, but my dream is to move to this county and live in nature one day. Thank you for showing how much great wisdom these rural folks really have to offer. You won't find this kind of people in any of the big cities easily, that's for sure.
@@juhaleskinen7383 'Need' is of course subjective but having insight into different parts of the US, especially rural areas which are much more peaceful and authentic, help broaden one's view despite the mainstream media only covering general discord and political discourse.
I am a Native Californian, who left LA during the Vietnam war and went to school at Humboldt State University in the 1970"S. This film brought back sooo many memories, being a hippie in Humboldt, working in a lumber mill, backpacking in the Marble Mountains and Trinity Alps, buying my first film camera (Bolex) in Cresent City, trespassing on corporate land in disguise to film the cutting down of ancient redwood trees (and getting caught) getting chased by a herd of Roosevelt Elk, and making love inside a giant redwood tree. Thanks Peter for making this great film !!

Brett's story about prison and the corruption of the Feds just makes me so upset. I cannot imagine how he must have felt coming out of prison when weed is getting legalized. Poor man. Needless trauma and suffering.
@angelastreatmentroom6437 i felt that too! God has intervened in my life as well, and made me sit and think. At first it feels like punishment. How glorious to come out the other side. ❤

Yes! Don't let MSM buffoonery that portrays only the negative in a few cities paint the USA y'all. These people here with Peter are the majority of us here in America!!!
did you miss the part of the title that say’s California? Literally the opening monologue addresses This comment. I don’t know where you’re from or if you’ve ever visited this part of California you’d have a much better understanding of how large and diverse the state is.
His comment "I just feel like we are renting our land from the government!" I feel his pain as I'm a land owner myself & the taxes about kill me! Great video Peter.
I agree. My property taxes are $6500 a year. That’s $525 a month extra. I know that’s not a lot of money for some people but for me that’s the difference between being able to save money and living paycheck to paycheck. We also have 10% sales tax on everything we buy and over $1.20 in taxes per gallon of gasoline. Hard times right now
This isn't directed specifically to the O.P. but more as a general question. No one likes paying a lot in property taxes but what's the solution? The property tax rate in CA is actually below national average. The amounts assessed seem high because the desirability of owning land along the California coast is high. I pay about $15k per year in property tax in SoCal. If I'd have bought more recently, I'd be paying well over $25k for what I own. That money pays for a great school system, public parks, well-maintained roads, fairly-compenstated teachers, firefighters, LEOs, etc. And the real estate market keeps going up and up year after year. That's the free market capitalism that everyone claims to love so much. Despite claims to the contrary, a state with a fleeing population doesn't have a burgeoning real estate market like CA does. I personally don't think it healthy for society but to propose otherwise would be anti-capitalism, and the people complaining most loudly about the high cost-of-living would have me lynched for suggesting such blasphemy.
My thoughts exactly, he went on his little vacation learned how to have a new positive outlook on life was released with no negative energy surrounding him. It’s unfortunate how he was treated by the FEDS but that’s the game. The MVP was his neighbor Fred who helped with the “chores” when Brett went away, Without being asked. He made sure that when Brett got back he would still have that equipment. That how neighbors should treat neighbors. Brett was the perfect Ambassador for Humboldt.
I’m sitting here on the Monday the tenth of January 2025 watching this and am very grateful for this. Although I live in Australia so it’s Sunday the 9th in California and fires have destroyed a great deal of California land and buildings. The death toll is rising and people had their insurance altered to exclude fires months prior to this occurring. Today there is news about a flame thrower or blow torch being used to start one of these fires, I swear reality is far worse than any Hollywood movie ever made. The boulevard is totally destroyed and LA is still on fire. If it weren’t for footage like this. The record of how it was prior to this devastation wouldn’t be here. Thanks The
The fires are in very SOUTHERN California, while Humboldt County and the Green Triangle are very Northern and coastal Northern California. I think of the distance as kinda like being as far as three states away. 🤪👍😊
@@pamelag5945Nobody from Australia is gonna know that. The sentiment was in the right place. And trust me. They’ve ALWAYS had their fair share of fires. Still do. You just don’t hear about it cuz it’s not LA.
@@jolemite2639 I’m well aware of wildfires in Australia. My comment was meant as an explanation. Those of us in NorCal would like people to understand that LA is not ‘California’. California is very diverse, having just about every kind of country and people. I guess you could say that about W or NSW, etc, too. Did you know that the whole of the UK could easily fit inside of CA? We are not all the same. 😂👍

The irony of Brett's imprisonment for 5 years, to come out to it (his offense) being legalized is astounding, but his coming out with forgiveness and a real sketch of everything the way he hoped would be his life, now realized...that is some heart-wrenching story. Thanks Peter for introducing us to Brett's music - I will look into that. I live in CA so different from Humboldt, but the Redwoods and the County is calling out to me!

Just don’t come to the red counties and start voting blue! Sorry to bring politics in it but being from central California I’ve seen my area change for the worse since people from LA and the Bay Area moved here the past ten years. They come here looking for peaceful serene genuine living and people, but bring their same old ways of voting democrat and now there are so many problems here that stemmed from those people and their ways of voting/living. I am a Native Californian, born in Eureka a long time ago. A long time before the hippies, pot smokers and weed growers moved in. It was a time when the main industry was logging, and lumber mills. I watched Humbolt county go from a place that had a thriving economy to broke and busted. That is when the Hippies and pot growers took over. Sure there were and still are a lot of Artists living in the county. I joined the Navy out of high school. There was an active fishery, good FRESH Seafood to be had, a thriving Crab fishery, but not any more. You can't find fresh local caught seafood any more. The last time I was over that way I went into a seafood restaurant and ordered fresh catch of the day, the waitress told me it was Copper River Salmon. I asked her if she knew where the Copper River was? Should have seen her when I told her it was Alaska. While serving aboard my first ship, in San Diego, I started hearing some of the guys complaining about how California sucked because there was nothing to do. So I would tell them to quit bitchin, get off their dead behinds and travel and see the State for what it is.
🇺🇲👍Thank you. As for the skunk/ junk, we share the same sentiment. I only know what I see. My judgement is based on observation, only. BTW, when I have a beer, the guy sitting next to me, or my nextdoor neighbor, doesn't need to move or close his windows. Let the toker do his thing, but sharing can be rude.
I remember we would always go to a restaurant on the pier called lazio's whenever we traveled through there. Still talk about it when the family gets together. Best seafood ever

I'm shedding tears throughout this video, in part due to the beauty and simplicity of how life should be and in part due to the destruction of the environment and of our fellow man. I'm so grateful this young man chose to forgive and become what he has become today. I'm grateful to his neighbors that supported him and his wife in the very unjust dark days, and for the community he has.

His comment "I just feel like we are renting our land from the government!" I feel his pain as I'm a land owner myself & the taxes about kill me! Great video Peter.
OBEY !!!
I personally don't think it healthy for society but to propose otherwise would be anti-capitalism, and the people complaining most loudly about the high cost-of-living would have me lynched for suggesting such blasphemy.
taxes are needed though (the price of civilization) to provide infrastructure and most important good education for all all the best in the USA
It's ridiculous. Property taxes and income taxes must be abolished.

42 years old born and raised here in California. 20+ years traveling all over California and sill exploring new towns and hwys. California is bigger than most countries. Its not what you see on TV
Humbolt going to a huppie apple farm! this dude how the fuck did he get that land prob stole it from someone... humboldt is just a bunch of yuppeis who have millions and millions in stock given by there parents!
his story didnt make sense really you were allowed to grow 99 plants in humboldt at the time he said he went to jail... also go too humboldt hill go inland thats where growers been growing making meth and X since the 80s... none them got caught ....
the biggest dog u seen is that dog?? bro thats a medium sized dog? have you ever heard of a asian shepard bula kutta them dogs weight like 250 lbs or more!
Well in Europe many people go country to country but in America going on a road trip it can take a full day to get across one state or half a day to get to your destination
@@oooh19 Yea, but if you take scenic routes it takes much longer but you get to see the real country. I took a 4 day trip from San Diego to the Oregon border using only the PCH and small highways. I did the whole Euro sight seeing (Rome, Parris & London) but I want to rent a van and drive the Basque country, swiss alps, ect.
This is your best show yet!!! Brett is a man that is easy to admire...
Peter, the artist you interviewed knows more about the world than anyone I’ve ever seen on your channel. An absolutely brilliant spirit. Thanks for your videos 🩵
Can people buy his paintings. Let me know
The story of his neighbors helping him like that is very beautiful. We need more people like these in our country. Caring about others without judgment.
The amount of neighborly love is off the chart!!!
That's how it is out there. People need each other to get by.
The amount of neighborly tweakers stealing chainsaws n choker cables is off the charts as well. If you get close enough to garberville or fortuna you've got tweak central.
Thanks!
I’m a 56 year old black man and I would love to live in humble it’s beautiful but the heart and passion of those two are invaluable
You definitely made the German couples trip 10x more special, what incredible memories they will treasure forever! amazing video Peter, one of my faves for sure
Imagine just walking through the middle of the woods nowhere and there's Peter! Like crazy!
this is so true. very powerful for them I bet
Yep, that's the Arcata I've always known and loved. Thanks for taking us there, Peter. Got a tear in my eyes a few times watching, especially listening to Brett's story.
I truly appreciate this elderly Artist / man ..his appreciation for nature and history of the land such as the ancient fallen tree he's painted I as admirable and also something I can relate to..🕊️🙏😌
Thank you Brett for letting us get a glimpse of your world through Peter's lens.
And Peter, again, thanks for bringing us another turn of the kaleidoscope of humanity.
fabulous word picture! Spot on!
Love this 👍👏
The ending nearly brought tears. Get me out of the city; thinking of America is a terrible place and villainizing others is not the path forward. What an amazing story. Thank you for sharing.
💯%
I must say you have left me in tears with this video and Brett's song at the end... how can we ever forget??? ... every American should see this one!
Me too...
Same! That song….
100% I was not expecting wholesome happy tears today, been a while.
Peter has really done fantastic work with this.
Me too, some of Peter's best work and once again the video shows that there's a whole different world out there compared what the media shows us 👍
I was sobbing at the end. Really triggered something in me.
As someone who grow up in the Central Valley, but know of Northern California well, this 1:10:09 was spot on of what California is truly about. So many good people with different perspectives living together. Many thanks for sharing this experience.
Love how the painter/artist Ken appreciates nature and capture the beauty in his paintings, he has such a lovley way to talk about nature too! Thanx Peter for making it possible to see this kind of places and all the lovely people you meet, even though Iḿ on the otherside of the world. Love from Sweden.
So I would tell them to quit bitchin, get off their dead behinds and travel and see the State for what it is.
im pretty sure the hippies and pot growers weren't the ones who ruined the logging industry.
Those damn pot smokers! lol, so silly that you people hate people for smoking pot but don’t bat an eye at cigarettes and alcohol addiction
Holy Mother of Church!! This video was FANTASTIC!!
I hated that it ended! I just watched on my phone, but will watch on the big screen TV later to get the real feel!!
While sipping some coffee on my patio of my 1 1/2 acre farmette in Palm Beach County Florida, I was counting my blessings to have the gorgeous sky, on a 78° day, with a big old dog, some horses, and the smell of hay in the barn. But this video just had me put Humboldt CA on my bucket list!!
Brett McFarland & crew in this video are the kind of humans you'd love as friends and neighbors! Thanks to Brett et all, who allowed Peter to bring this to the masses!
I don't know about y'all, but I can taste that fresh cider from the other side of the country in the far southeast corner!!
Wishing many blessings to Brett and his wife and child, and to all those that have been a part of this incredible history lesson, and the visual feast!!
♥️ And that song Brett wrote and sang is fabulous!! Gotta go subscribe to his channel!!
Last 7 minutes are the best, hands down. Don't miss it! ❤
Omg that ending... Man, this videos are SO DAMN SICK. Please won't you ever dare stop doing this stuff.
All the lessons, all the landscapes, all the histories, everything I take from these videos are insanely great and I love it SO MUCH
sick? no they are not ill at all they are great!
@@Silence_Duder_Gooder Damn.... so I shouldn't have punched that guy for saying my Shovelhead was sick?
I'm shedding tears throughout this video, in part due to the beauty and simplicity of how life should be and in part due to the destruction of the environment and of our fellow man. I'm so grateful this young man chose to forgive and become what he has become today. I'm grateful to his neighbors that supported him and his wife in the very unjust dark days, and for the community he has. Look at all that they have accomplished, all the beauty they have created and the healthy life they live! I will watch this again and again and I'll share it. Thank you for this video❤
But how many trees were chop of for this family to live there ? Now imagine a number of families living and chopping all the resources there.
@@usrIO30581l hahahaha! You have no idea what you are talking about.
@@usrIO30581l and imagine that.. still millions of trees.. just hush.. you sound stupid
Me too. Tears in my eyes
"You have to be able to see it in your mind and say it, even if you feel like you're a liar." This sentence really resonated with me, and I hope it does with you too. Make something of your life, even if it seems unattainable and impossible." Thanks Peter and Brett!
Thank you Peter. Humboldt and Trinity counties are VERY SPECIAL.
Amazing that there are murderers who’ve done less time than this compassionate, kind, friendly, generous, soulful, hardworking & barefoot MAN. This video was amazing-with the people we met and the redwoods too! The great white Pyrenees was a beautiful creature! The singing and song were lovely! One of my favorite podcasts from Peter and I enjoy all of them. This would have been a tale of redemption if indeed Brett was a criminal. Brett is an amazing human being!!! Thank you both for sharing Brett’s stories and history. Bless you both ❤
This was such a journey holy smokes. Five years for growing plants. Crack hotel turned hidden oasis. Future now and limitless thought in the old growth. Stellar song and voice. I really needed this today ♥️
Peter this is my favorite channel on youtube. God bless you for introducing us to all these amazing people and their stories
Watching this could never be a waste of time!!! Great work, this is true journalism. The world needs more Peter Santenello's and less MSM
This guy speaks open and freely from his heart.. I have a friend like him ... there's no guessing what he's thinking. Great episode 👏
I'm from Humboldt county, born and raised. Thanks for showing our side of California❤
CA has every major biome on the planet within its borders, this is a beauty
Yes.
Tropical rainforest? Tundra?
@@HaloDude557We do in fact have a rainforest to the far north west. There’s some taiga out near King’s Canyon as well.
Wow, to think I almost passed on this vid. As a first time viewer all I can say is it was well worth the hour watching. When I graduated high school in '74 in the San Fernando Valley, some of my friends went off to Hawaii, some to Yosemite/ Kern area, and some to N.Ca / Oregon areas . I went to Ventura Ca area, then to the Korea, Japan & Germany via the Army. No matter what, I always yearned to be back on the West Coast, still do...
You just touched a 70-year-old woman’s heart all of you. I am amazed at the content of this video, but most importantly at the beautiful personalities of those you have interviewed especially the key figure. Blessings to you all.
Peter you out did yourself with this content! Thank you
♥️💙♥️🇺🇸
Beautiful to see a Plein-Air artist in these days. Ken's a true treasure!
Thank you Peter, for showing again how culturally diverse USA is, and how kind and caring people can be. Greatings from Nijmegen, Netherlands 🇳🇱
Watching from Canada 🇨🇦 , aren't they Precious Wonderful American folks , from the artist and apple grower, awesome thank you Peter
I absolutely love this film. Thank you so much to organic farmers!
This may have been your best episode yet! Humboldt was humbling.
I agree!
Try the eastern side for rural California next. Sierra, Plumas, Lassen Counties.
I'm from Lassen county...Susanville Ca. good people here!!❤
Highway 395 is amazing. Reno down to below Bishop.
Plumas
Lassen County is great, me and my friend drove up there to see Josh Turner at the county fair a few months ago. Friendly people.
Horrible place, horible place@@mvm932
Fantastic song at the end. Great Voice❣️
Great show, TY
This is the California I know and love. I'm from the Central Valley area and when I was a kid I would always take vacations up to Humbolt County or Shasta-Trinity National Forest. Anytime I wanted to see the ocean we would drive over to Trinidad and Patricks Point. The area is truely beautiful and the people are great.
A little fyi that was conveniently left out of this video, it doesn't matter where you live in California, EVERYONE still has to deal with California's ridiculous laws, taxes and politics.
@@gunnerneikoify No it wasn't, Brett mentions the crazy tax laws that drove most of the farmers out of California and shines a light on the hypocrisy of locking up someone for weed and not getting early release when it became legal in 2017.
Humbolt County is a completely different world than the southern part of the Central Valley. It feels like it's in a different state.
@@gunnerneikoifyconveniently left out … because it’s so obvious? 😅 it’s the same state and so yeah, the state laws apply. Is that weird?
@@gunnerneikoify No he didn't, Brett talks about the hypocrisy on why he got locked up and how most of the farmers were driven out of California due to the tax laws.
🙋🏾♀️ Native Californian (Central Cali) and your storytelling is soo sincere and honest. Thanks for taking your time and allowing the history to speak.
Great song and story !
I've lived all but 5 years of my 70 in the very center of the glorious state of California. That's all Ag, orchards and diaries.
Amazing how many Americans despise California and yet its the most diverse and amazing state in the Union
It's obvious who's to thank for that
People are just jealous, it's such an awesome state. I live in socal and love it. But I love central and norcal too, it's beautiful and diverse
