Homeless Man Lives with His Wife in a Tent Downtown Miami Beach

  • Debo and I first met as we were crossing the street in downtown Miami. I didn't know he was homeless and he didn't know about Invisible People. Debo stopped me and asked, "I hope you're not offended but you remind me of Colonel Sanders." I laughed and said I wish I had a secret chicken recipe that could make millions. We both laughed.
    Debo says there are all kinds of stuff that can lead a person into homelessness and that no one is ever safe from falling into a life on the streets.
    Debo has been on the streets homeless in Miami for eight years. Both he and his wife don't smoke, drink or do drugs. The alley where they keep their tent, they keep clean. His wife is a former school teacher. She has been homeless for five years!
    Debo and his wife have a strong faith in God. They believe God will provide all of their needs. Debo is super friendly. He tries his best to help other homeless people living in downtown Miami.

    About Invisible People
    There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, a living wage or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
    We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
    This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
    However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
    Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

      Bless you Mark for what you do for the homeless. I'm on a fixed income and understand the struggle to make ends meet, although I have never been homeless and can't imagine how that feels. We give to our local homeless shelter but it feels like it is futile. I am starting to believe there is nothing that can be done to solve homelessness. I contacted both of my Senators and both of their staff members tell me that their are much bigger problems to address than homelessness. I've lost hope on helping because it is a problem that is unsolvable. Life is unfair, some are blessed to live in mansions while others are damned to live on the street. It's just a crying shame.

      A CDL is not the answer to everything. Are you gonna tell every homeless person to get a CDL? I bet you this man is descended from slaves and black men make up damn near half the homeless population. Reparations for #ADOS is needed to close the racial/lineage wealth gap and get these black people off the streets. The rest could be gotten off the streets with a housing program and a sizable investment in America's infrastructure to create jobs.

    • @TinyHouseDreaming
      @TinyHouseDreaming 4 ปีที่แล้ว +68

      @@daltonbedore8396 First off OTR drivers rarely interview for jobs. Its all done over the phone and you get a ticket paid for by the company to the terminal to begin training with that company. OTR drivers are also paid weekly so one could quickly afford the thubgs they need. We earn shower credits at truck stops like Pilot, Flying J, Loves, T/A for fueling as well as can take showers at the companies terminal. You dont have to look good to drive a truck across the country and you make damn good money to do it. I was living in my van when I first went into trucking and can attest 1st hand that the money you make out here is life changing for someone in that situation. Plus the truck is a home so all the money you make (which is 1000+ a week might I add) can be saved. I spend about 59 weeks a year in my truck which has a refrigerator, microwave, invertor, etc... And plenty of companies train you to get your CDL for FREE! YES FREE. Prime Inc, Swift, Warner, CFI, Stevens Trans, Wilson, Raider Express just to name a few.
      Your response seems rather negative as if a person should not even try or consider a CDL as a way out of homelessness but your obviously not at all educated on the topic. I am living proof that it can be done. Watch my vlog if you dont believe me.

      Thrusha S Saint Cloud, Minnesota is pretty good, too. I moved there from Minneapolis to get off the streets because the Minneapolis housing list was 11 years and St. Cloud was nine months. Some of the subsidized housing is filling up in Saint Cloud, but there are other programs opening and it’s still a good place to move. They also have excellent food shelves and at the Catholic charities one you can even shop for your own food like you’re in a grocery store and get what you eat instead of just random things that they give you in a box. You can go there every day and get bread if you want to. They allowed me to shop three times a month rather than once monthly because you get about a weeks worth of groceries each time and I was not getting any government assistance at that time. I don’t even get government assistance anymore. I work and pay my bills. It was a great opportunity.

Jobs, apartments, etc. right now he is at the Salvation Army. He has a job but nothing he could truly live off. He feels hopeless at times. He is now 25. He is smart and a workhorse but most people won’t even talk to him.

He is working for a landscaping company right now doing all physical work including pavers. He does a great job. They only cut grass like one day a week. Most days it’s very physical work. He is a hard worker but he said this isn’t something he wants to do forever. He is working with a hernia in his abdomen because he can’t afford to not work. Thank you for the driver tip. I’ll tell him to keep that in his mind for the future.

Notice the further from God and religion people get, the worse they get. • @BigBodyBiggolo
      @BigBodyBiggolo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @Sophia Anatolios i think its more about the size of the USA, because of the amount of people most statistic information comes from the metropolitan areas so small towns and small cities might have completely different statistics but simply wont show up because of the small impact this group has.
      Thats why a lot of these statistics dont really mean anything.

      @@BigBodyBiggolo All of the "shortages" have an iffy factor, that is true, and low pay is a big factor, or what the employers like to call "skills shortage", meaning unless you got 2 PhDs don't expect to afford a home lol. But for a teacher to be 5 years homeless, well, that is 1000x less likely than an ex-con being in the same situation. Among other things, US teachers can pack up a suitcase and a husband and get a job in about half the planet, from the UK to Dubai to Shenzhen. PS the idea of a stable marriage being that you have double the chances to keep an income through thick and thin, and double the extended family network for the very rough patches.

    "I'm on the street, but I'm not of the street." Great line, and great thing.
    Good thing for him is, he and his wife can look out for each other. As opposed to being alone. So, like how he said he used to sing. If his wife sings, she could do that during the day, downtown as people pass by, and hopefully a few people will give them a dollar or two for singing, and maybe he could video record a few of the songs (assuming he has the technology), and post it on TH-cam, and it would be nice if that turns out to be their big break. Or, if someone walks up on them, if he has his back turned, she could warn him, and they could get out of there. Etc. It's good that they have each other to look out for each other, rather than them being alone.

    So glad you went down to Miami, my hometown. Most people don't know how bad the homeless situation is down in Florida. It's horrible. Thank you for bringing it to the light.
