I bought a silver Rimowa original cabin 15 years ago when the company was still independent and when it was only about $500. I'm still using it today since it's so well made. The dings and dents give it character.
Great review! I travel at least 30-50K miles per year. I have had the lesser models - Salsa Deluxe polycarbonate Cabin L and Check In for 12 years. I used the Cabin L on all of my trips. Last year I finally to retire it due to poor handling by the airline. The airline required that I gate check the bag. Somewhere between the jetway and the plane luggage compartment something ran over it or crushed it. The airline would only replace it for a very inexpensive rollerbag. I got the bag back and Rimowa did repair it nicely, but I will only use it for car travel now. I replaced it with the Original Cabin L in black like yours. It will definitely last me the rest of my life. Before I had Rimowa luggage, I would purchase a new roller bag every year because they didn't hold up particularly if I had to check them.
First of all, thank you so much for sharing your story! I loved reading it. The biggest perk to me is the lifetime warranty for aluminum models. Mine is actually Cabin not Cabin L because I worried the Cabin L would end up gate-checked. Always good to have important items with me. Cheers.
What a lovely video! Thanks for showing the downsides, I had thought this would happen but none of the other videos showed it. Wonderful aesthetics and I admire how your clothes are so neatly pressed!
I have a similiar set up but instead of the original cabin large check in, I opted for the hybrid large check in since the material is less prone to damage once checking in with the carrier
Great choice! I actually considered the hybrid check-in large before i opted for the original. However, the weight difference isn't that much plus aluminum is repairable and unlikely to be completely broken. The lifetime warranty will cover pretty much every part of the luggage in aluminum.
@@theaestheticminimalist Because the hybrid has a polycarbonate material, the dents won't be as severe as compared to the aluminum. Also to note, the black aluminum that we own are more prone to scratches from carriers when transporting the luggages. I didn't mind the original cabin as I will be carrying it with me during my travel journey.
@@water851 Yes, that is all true, and the deal breaker to me was actually seeing people posting about their polycarbonate suitcases actually broke/cracked and was told by Rimowa that it couldn't be fixed. There're pros and cons for either options. It's up to individuals to decide whether they can tolerate the scratches and dents with a lifetime warranty that can fix everything vs. a material that is not as noticeable with scratches but the warranty won't cover certain damage such as cracks.
I just started watching videos from your channel and I am in love. I'm new to minimalism and have a long way to go but your channel really inspires me. Most of the minimalism channels are not really my aesthetic. I'm not doing it for the aesthetic, I want to learn how to save more, buy sustainably and intentionally but I want a nice appearance too.
I traveled over a million miles with Rimowa and Tumi. I also used Samonite sometimes which lasts at least 250k miles. I have had wheels broken off and banged up pretty hard (to the point of not moving or not able to go in a straight line. I had screws fallen off. So, you may need repairs. Just keep in mind that you are buying this for flying, not for saving it in mint condition in your home. If you do not want to see your expensive suitcase scratched up, then do not buy one. Get a less expensive one like Samsonite.
I thought I would be ok with the scratches, and I think I am still, but the dents that ultimately start changing the shape and functionality when you close is a tough experience. I also learned how to repair these things on my own at this point.
Thanks for a wonderful review! How is your check in luggage held up? I spent money on the carry on and love it as I can control and handle it without worrying about damage. For check in, I am afraid it will break and the warranty won’t cover the damages from airlines. Have you had to use the warranty yet for your check in luggage? Thanks!
I love your videos and content on luxury, quality, and investment minimalism. Simply beautiful. My mom has a small one and it definitely looks really good. If I ever get one it'll be all black and only for hand carry. Checking it in and knowing that air crew will just throw it around will be the death of me for its price.

Great review. Your packing only accounted for outer wear so I must say with my Rimowas sometimes they do get filled up more quickly then what you demonstrated. What size in cabin do you recommend as there are 2 or 3 sizes and how do you find the black vs silver original?
That's correct. I tend to pack inner wear in a smaller packing cube or lay them flat into the blocking compartment on each side. There were still space to do that in Cabin. I opted for Cabin rather than Cabin S or Plus - didn't want to run the risk of being too big to fit in the overhead bin or too small to carry everything I need. The choice between black and silver is just personal preference rather than anything from practicality consideration.
