Add Christian Bale to the list! He was in Spielberg's Empire of the Sun in '87 as a kid, and incredible in that. He was just a little later to get the blockbuster status, but Bale was phenomenal in his teens and early 20s.

Nice episode, fellas! Yes, the Len Bias comparison is accurate. Lenny was my favorite basketball player as a kid and it crushed me when he died of an overdose. It was tragic to see River go out in a similar way. Both men were exceptionally talented!
You are right about young friends. I had friends in public school and We would stay out all day into the night playing street hockey and just doing kid stuff. But once junior high began we all went in different directions and i never really saw them again. But remember them clear as day and always wonder what happened to them.
In the book they all die except for Gordie. That's the significance of the "goocher" scene. It foreshadows their doom. They all flip tails but on the second round, only Gordie flips heads and thus he's the only one who got out of their small town and lived. Vern later dies in a house fire and Teddy dies in a eventually car accident. Another cool detail is that the guy who kills Chris had just been released from Shawshank.
Finally another rewatch of a movie my dad watched by chris/bill/Sean! love hearing new voices every week........
Also, Steven King writes excellent dialog and characters. Great for books but can be lost in horror movies. Really enjoyable when done well on the screen.
River Phoenix was one of my favorite actors when I was kid. As much as I still love to watch Stand By Me it's also makes me sad. RIP River Phoenix!
This is by far the best podcast ever, all the sports analogies intertwined perfect. Ray Brower used to scare the fuck outta me lol I had nightmares about him for years.
For those Deadwood fans out there (CR), Gordie's dad, played by Marshall Bell, was Magistrate Claggett in Deadwood.

Great pod. Loved the thoughts on River Phoenix. I have a real connection with Running on Empty - top 4-5 role for an actor for me is River in that film.

In the movie Boyz N the Hood, one of the characters says, "You all wanna see a dead body?" But in South Central, you don't need to pack a sleeping bag and travel 30 miles.

Music is a character in "Stand By Ne" as well, but the OST music CD is woefully incomplete! I looked at the song listings in the credit crawl and took a trip to a well-stocked used music CD/comic book store to (mostly) fill in the blanks. So, what's missing?

I created a 17 track custom music CD in "movie sequence," which puts the movie into context.
I was the age of Gordie, Chris, Vern, and Teddy in the 1950's. Play Ben E. King's "Stand By Me" and the movie plays, putting me back in sugar-plantation-Aiea. A quarter mile down the hill is the movie theater, community center, bank, post office, and pool hall. A huge Monkey Pod Tree stood in front of the pool hall, marking the center of town.
Chris would be awesome in print media
Add to the list of child actors that would have serious longevity and range: Larenz Tate and Regina King. Both are slept on.

I agree with bill om river Phoenix sadly wasnt the first or last to have a great career derailed. The end of the movie is always hard to get thru knowing what happened with him.. by far, my favorite stephen king adapted movie probably because im not the biggest horror fan, but it is one of those movies that pretty much everyone enjoys..

Suggestion for a future rewatchable: *12 Monkeys.* I really hope you consider that a rewatchable. An absolute amazing classic.
(As for the Netflix remake category - it was tried and it's sh*t...)
I totally agree. Would be an amazing choice for The Rewatchables. And have them bring on either Quentin Tarantino or Bill Hader, or both.
Thanks for the great episode guys. Wanted to point out you missed out quite an important nitpick (I presume a well-known one, pointed out by Family Guy's "remake") - so, ok, Gordie's got a gun, and Ace and his gang scurry away. But what next? Ace can come and beat him up any other day. Does Gordie now take a gun everywhere? Does he sleep with it at night in case Ace shows up to beat him up? How is that a decisive win?
In my experience most bullies prefer easy targets and tend not to mess with people who they believe will or have shown a willingness to stand up to them.
@Guy Kruger: About the gun - no. Remember - that was "Chris's" father's gun anyway. So - no, "Gordy" could NOT have kept it to defend himself.
Besides - the movie omitted what happened in between, probably because of pacing - in the novella "Ace" and his gang DID beat up "Gordy" and each of the others in his group of friends.

For what its worth. I find all the sports analogies tiresome and incomprehensible. In fact i find it abhorrent. I have nothing against people that love sports, these guys clearly do, but for people like me who have literally no interest at all in any sports its just frustrating. Do they use film analogies in the sports podcasts?
However, these guys know their stuff on both subjects and they are so interesting when they are just on the film that i can forgive them entirely for all the sports tangents. Well informed and researched and utterly riverting. I will listen to these guys for the rest of time. I love them.
Also seeing as I'm here, and i hope i dont offend anyone but is the joke with Chris's "impressions" that they are all the same and he just shouts exactly the same whoever he is "doing"?? Honestly i dont know because its the only time i dont find him funny and the others seems to be hysterical every time. Am i missing something?

Nah, really though if I'm thinking "white movie", this isn't it. John Singleton loved this and centered Boyz In The Hood around 4 friends growing up together. Rural white kids in '59 or urban black kids in '90, they have similar problems with gangs, the restrictions of their immediate environment and how/if they can overcome them. The differences are pretty clear but it's still a similar class-related struggle.
Now some stiff upper lip Merchant of Ivory movie, yeah that's white af 🎩👒🎻

How hard to get the rights to show some of the film in one of these videos? The movie studio is definitely not banking off this ~100 year old movie. Go to the property owner and negotiate. Any self interested capitalist should understand that this kind of spotlight stuff only increases the film profile.
