  • The Ringer’s Chris Ryan, Sean Fennessey, and Amanda Dobbins thought they all agreed to call it "the Bellagio job" before they rewatched ‘Ocean’s 12,’ the third movie in our Flawed Rewatchables series, starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and Julia Roberts, directed by Steven Soderbergh.

    Im glad this podcast exists. I see no point in worrying about the plot of the film. If you immerse yourself in it and get mesmerized by the beautiful direction and cinematography you might find it to be better than Oceans 11. I never cared to watch it until this podcast and i took the plunge and was blown away by how beautiful it is

    Another thought I remember hearing when this was released:
    Oceans 11- Look at how cool these characters are
    Oceans 12- Look at how famous the people who play these characters are
    I think it was a little too self-serving and ham-handed for people looking for a stylized con-job movie

      But wasn't that the point? It had a wink and a nod towards all that. It was very aware, lampooning itself and the Hollywood self-congratulating movie. My main complaint is that there isn't a plot. It's more a series of skits.

    Amanda’s reasons for liking the movis make me feel like I was smart for liking this even though I never had those words haha. Also “Movie is pleasure principle” yes!
    “achingly beautiful” ok damn but true. it was so well shot and cut with the music that I like had to like it. oh and then literally in your next sentence you say how soderberg had said that. ok cool!
    haha I love Amanda. “I’ve constructed my entire life to not meet people like the person you’re about to play“ I relate to that SO hard.
    I do agree about the wine scene at the hotel. could have done with more scenes like that.
    “What’s aged the best” The look sound and feel. Yes!!!!
    My favorite shot is the freeze of rusty jumping out the window.
    What has aged the worst is the attitude toward women and my general sense of people being fuming piles of anger and that now being transparent to me, people making jokes that just kind of make me feel bad now or things that make me cringe
    I love Catherine Zeta Jones in it. I wanted more of her.
    Also the movie just like doesn’t make sense but they do it so nicely that I don’t care.
    I might have to watch this again now. again. I once asked for this movie on dvd for christmas and got ocean’s 13 instead and was SO disappointed.

    @1:04:28 Re: Isabella...Watch the deleted scenes. One thing I wish the film had, like, even just 20 more seconds for, are these cut scenes: because it establishes, more firmly than that one scene later on, that back when they met, Isabella *knew* all along Rusty is a thief. She knew all along on her case that the job was Rusty, too. (Explains this @1:04:28 ...she was messing with him, trying to get him to just finally admit the truth to her...This is also why her boss denies her the 1077 order...he says it's because she got approval for one once but made no arrests....well, that's because it was Rusty & she still loved him, even after he disappeared.) The extra bits would really help establish how right from the start, she knew who she was falling in love with.

  • @LenGott8345
    @LenGott8345 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My most rewatchable scene, is the scene where they're in jail and it comes down to Rusty and Danny asking each other...
    "Was she worth it?"
    "Was Tess?"
    The first movie was about Danny's ex and Danny trying to get at the man who had her, while seeing if he could get her back too. The sequel puts them in the crosshairs of Rusty's ex whose father happens to be one of the best who ever did it, who also is fueled at the chance to exact getback on Rusty for leaving her cause she was closing in on him as a robber.
    I absolutely loved this movie and it's my favorite of the series. Didn't have the best villain (13 did oddly enough to me), but the story was outstanding.

    @8:12 "And we are the marks." Huge point. Even one the movie itself makes, during its most meta sequence: the Julia Roberts cameo. When Bruce Willis says, "If everybody’s so freaking smart, how come the movie did $675 million worldwide?” (Right before, mind you: a priceless artpiece gets swapped for a hologram, as an actress playing as a character playing as herself, pretends to pass out from her fake baby.)
    The reason I find that moment so important is that it TELLS you what, as a sequel, & just a star power vehicle in general, is the movie's REAL heist...the audience. The box office. And the rest is a con, an illusion...or, as LaMarq says later: "a very elaborate show."

      I mean, I don't see how the Julia Roberts "trick" is any sillier than the old guy pretending to have a heart attack for no reason other than the camera being on him, to fool the audience, in Ocean's 11. That was equally as logic-breaking.

    I do think its the weakest one, story-wise.... and yet, it's the one that I find myself revisiting because of just how bizarrely fun and convoluted it is. Also, in comparison to the other 2, this one looks great. Very European influenced, and real old-school in terms of cinematography and camera moves. Ultimately, the Ocean's trilogy is about having fun with this cool collection of characters. This one was no different. Even if the stakes are supposedly higher, there is a sense of fun in their desperation to pay back their score...... even if it is a far too convenient for its own good, at the end.

      @WW 33 ...I hate those things. No, heist movies in general are pretty trite. They can be fun, but O12 is just laborious. I thinking it's very busy and very shallow. And I think the actors are mostly there to cash a paycheck; even those who are generally strong are mailing it in.

      Like all of the Ocean's are kinda dumb, and 12 is very much the dumbest.
      I like the "if you think the thing I like is dumb, then you're dumb" defense. Also very freshman English class.
      If you like the movie, cool, it's fine. There are bad movies I like too. But don't try to justify it as the people writing, directing, or acting it gave a shit about it. It's kinda embarrassing.

    how did Linus' mom get everyone out of prison? who knows. ah, to hell with explaining that in any way shape or form... it's not like the plot of the entire movie depends on that making sense or anything... let the audience decide for themselves! how did the team outsteal a superior thief? wait, I got it! let's make it so his teacher swapped the original with a replica and never told him. the teacher wants his arrogant student to learn humility. I mean if we don't write that in, they're completely fucked right? and let's have the superior thief somehow be SO honor bound, he responds by dutifully paying 200 million dollars.
    not trying to rain on people's parade - it's an entertaining movie and the cast is great, but the writing is absolutely atrocious. the worst part is at the very end when the entire cast is smiling triumphantly as they meet in the poker room, with victorious music playing in the background. did the writers actually think viewers would feel like these characters accomplished something in this movie? if so, what? they literally did nothing, to achieve this ending.

    • @brianbernstein3826
      @brianbernstein3826 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @WW 33 it's rather amusing how in all your condescending arrogant remarks about how this went over my head and that went over my head, you didn't sufficiently answer a single real question I posed.
      Your explanation to how Linus's mom got them all out of prison is that she's a con woman? Wow, fantastic explanation there.
      Your explanation as to the logic behind Lemarc doing what he did is "it was his plan." Wow. Really thorough. Compelling. So many great points you raise.
      The check amount at the end of the movie is 198 million 4 hundred thousand, and that's what I was referring to. You're insulting me because you're saying I missed the detail that the Night Fox only contributed part of that amount?
      Let's say that you're right, for argument's sake, and that the crew paid 101 million and the Night Fox paid 97 million. Say that's true. Does that make my point any less valid, that it's silly to believe the Night Fox would submit that amount of money after being played this hard by Lemarc? His sense of honor is just that strong? Realistically, he'd be so enraged with Lemarc that he'd demand Lemarc pay the 97 million, as the Night Fox won the competition fairly and was only cheated by Lemarc as a "lesson in humility." The Night Fox would want to teach his own lesson to Lemarc at this point.
      We are meant to assume that what, The Night Fox is just this shining beacon of honor, completely loyal to his master no matter how hard his master fucks him? That the thief code is just that strong for him? Only problem is, the Night Fox has already shown he doesn't value thief codes whatsoever when he violates rule number one and by helping Benedict find Ocean. His character is arrogant and he believes he is above the law - it is completely against this kind of personality to do what he did and just surrender 100% immediately. It isn't believable and it's terrible writing. Sifting through the very low marked reviews of this film, it seems that my sentiment is one held by the majority of viewers.
      So far you've offered absolutely zero real answers to my analysis, except for condescending remarks about things going over my head and not being able to read. Do those kind of remarks make me look weak, or do they make you look weak? I forget.

    • @brianbernstein3826
      @brianbernstein3826 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @WW 33
      "She's a conwoman." This is your best answer? As to how a woman posing as an FBI agent managed to release eight highly sought after criminals into society, without anyone noticing, or any attention/consequences drawn unto herself? And your explanation for giving no explanation whatsoever is "I said I wasn't going into details." It couldn't possibly be any more clear that your choice to reply here in the first place was not driven out of a genuine interest to discuss details of the film. You just want to start fights and hurl insults, but it's not going very well for you.
      You write "LeMarc" in one sentence and "LeMarcs" in the next, all the while trying to attack me for missing small details in the film as you see them? You're genuinely embarrassing.
      "you just wasted those 2 whole entire paragraphs on why Tolour would ‘pay the money’ is destroyed by a very short line in the movie"
      Look at this sentence you wrote. Are you drunk? As I said, you're embarrassing.
      So what that LeMarc held onto the money. So Tolour, who is extremely arrogant and has no respect for thief honor (he ratted Ocean's whole crew out to to Benedict) is perfectly fine with this mentor "conning" him out of 97 million dollars? After he just beat Ocean to the egg and established his supremacy in his mind, he just walks away with his tail between his legs? This is incredibly poor, nonsensical writing. Not unlike your comments, coincidentally. That could actually explain why you perceive this movie as being so well written (55% on Rottten Tomatoes, you got a few professional film critics to go after once you've have enough of being beaten up by me here)

      @WW 33 yeah I'm not going to continue this back and forth every day, it's just a giant waste of time. You aren't really bringing any new information to the table with each successive comment.
      Tolour has "no choice but to accept that he lost?" Right, it's not like taking the money back from Lemarc is a possibility... it's not like he's one of the greatest THIEFS on the planet or anything. It's not like he couldn't express anger at Lemarc for conning him out of almost a HUNDRED million dollars. Anger, threats, violence, protesting... no, none of this would happen from being robbed of that sum of money. Of being cheated out of a fair competition you worked very hard to win. Of having your mentor who trained you for years and years, completely BETRAY you, all to teach you humility in a highly condescending exercise. To completely embarrass a character who's main attribute is pride, in front of his biggest competition. You're completely right, what could poor, poor Tolour do? He had no choice but to.... do what exactly? What was the proportionate response he issued to Lemarc, in your eyes? Well? You have no real response. You've HAD no real response.
      Same goes with the mother. You still cannot explain how she let those eight highly sought after criminals that EVERY employee of the FBI would be watching like a hawk, to go FREE into the streets. "Oh she was an undercover agent" you say, as if this remark means ANY thing. How does her being an undercover agent allow her to defy her boss, coworkers, and entire company in secret without being caught, with zero repercussions to her profession let alone her freedom? How does saying she is an undercover agent explain ANY thing, anything at all?
      You say you're happy to have a productive conversation about this, and yet it was you who showed up insulting me left and right in your initial remark. You initiated personal attacks on me, that was your first address to me, I had said nothing to you at that point and had merely criticized a film: a film you didn't write or take part in whatsoever. Here's a bold idea: why don't you learn to handle someone else criticizing something you like, without needing to throw your toys across the room like a frustrated 10 year old boy? You actually admit in this latest comment of yours, that you don't mind if your sentences aren't coherent? What a bold admission: we have a self-proclaimed moron on our hands ladies and gentlemen! You don't mind if you misspell words or miss details, and yet your first comment is based on how stupid I am to miss details. Yeah, no hypocrisy whatsoever...
      First you say you don't want to go into details, now all of the sudden you say "I can expand if you want." First you argue that all the details are there for the viewing, and I'm just too "incompetent" to notice them and now all of the sudden, you say that I have no appreciation for the subtly of art, and that not everything has to be included in the film? You can't even go a single comment without contradicting yourself left and right. And your revised position doesn't hold any weight either: "It wasn't in the movie, use your imagination!" You could literally justify any poor writing or movie on the planet with this garbage "argument."
      I point out how embarrassing you are, and your witty reply is to write "you're embarrassing" back at me? What's next, I am rubber you are glue? And very nice, by the way, quoting me using alternate caps and lower case in some bizarre form of juvenile mockery. You must actually be a teenager. I refuse to believe I am speaking to anyone older than 14 based on your total lack of awareness to your own repeated humiliations here. I suppose I shouldn't have encouraged you by even dignifying your initial comment here with a reply in the first place, but I'm not alone in being tired of internet trolls. Putting people like you in your place is necessary and I certainly don't regret that much.

      @brianbernstein3826 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @WW 33 Literally everything you said about Tolour you made up. And you say it with such authority and conviction as if it's been confirmed by the writers. You've gone from incredibly dumb to actually clinically scary. Not a single thing you just inflected on the script is confirmed by anyone. It also makes zero sense. Whereas MY contention - that a person being betrayed by their mentor and being robbed of 97 million dollars would lead to immediate retribution - makes TOTAL sense. He wouldn't just stand idly by and let that happen, like a total spineless wimp. It's absurd, illogical, and totally out of his well established character.
      I said eight instead of eleven because three of them didn't get pinched: Basher, Linus, and Turk. For a guy who tries desperately to feel a fleeting moment of self esteem by lambasting others for "not remembering details," that's a pretty giant one to not remember.
      Isabel arrested the eight men with at least 5-10 police officers. She notified the commissioner of the arrests, and I don't know if you know anything about cops (probably not) but this involves a ton of paperwork. Pictures taken, finger prints, profiles, dates, the whole nine yards. This information goes into multiple databases, and in the case of major criminals such as these, it would go into global databases at a minimum as a precaution.
      Linus' mom shows up and says "there appears to be some irregularity with your paperwork" etc etc. Why would Isabel just turn over these eight high profile criminals to her? If she WERE to do this, she would at a MINIMUM have records of the transfer. Are you seriously this fucking stupid of a person? Isabel was a legit cop with a zillion contacts in network, not least of which the commissioner himself. She wouldn't even be authorized to transfer custody like this without MULTIPLE records, a zillion documents and approvals of high ranking officers. A SINGLE con woman wouldn't stand a chance against this kind of frame work. It's as if you just assume police are as incredibly moronic as you are.
      I feel like a cat just tossing a dead mouse about the room. Not only is it not challenging, but the fight ended a very long time ago. Let this experience be a lesson for you. The next time someone criticizes something you like, ask the question "is this person personally attacking me?" I was not. "Do I need to make a fool of myself and attack this person for no reason?" You do not. I gotta hand it to you though, when you actually wrote that you didn't mind if your comments were incoherent, I actually laughed out loud. That's got to be one of the most blatant self owns in history, it was like watching a guy pull out a pistol and accidentally blow his dick off all over the floor.

    • @brianbernstein3826
      @brianbernstein3826 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @WW 33
      I was wrong to say eight, you are correct, they are all finally arrested, you are right. That's literally the first time I've been wrong or you've been right about something in this entire exchange. If you hadn't just been wrong 3,471 times in a row, that might actually mean something. I don't have a problem with owning up to making mistakes, never did. But unlike me, you're not able to own up to your mistakes. That's the difference between a person like you and a person like me. I posted my opinion of a film and you responded with great hostility and condescension for no better reason than that I criticized a movie you liked - you're in the wrong.
      And all the meaningless insults being tossed back and forth aside, as to the SUBSTANCE of this discussion? 1) Why would the arrogant Tolour allow his mentor of many years, rob him of 97 million dollars? and 2) how is Linus' mom able to sneak multiple high level criminals from out of a police station when there are countless procedural records, documentations, pints, etc necessary to transfer prisoners like this, certainly in a European country? You have not answered either of these questions. The answers you've tried to give are not answers at all and expose a total lack of understanding of the world. I've picked them apart, detail for detail, and tried to explain the error in your reasoning as patiently as I can. But you're not getting it. You're not able to learn. And frankly, it shouldn't be my job to have sit here and try and educate a dumb person about how the world actually works.
      I shouldn't have to explain why there is more than a 1077 involved in the transaction of several high profile thieves who just tried to rob a museum in front of endless witnesses. Anyone with half a brain knows that as soon as you get arrested, the police take all kinds of records, pictures, prints... this is common sense. When the prisoners move into someone else's custody, this too goes into endless records. Records that get followed up on by different authorities to ensure correct protocol was followed.
      Just like it's common sense that if you are mentored by a master thief for years, and that teacher robs you of 97 million dollars, you are not going to just sit idly by and let the check clear. Actions would be taken. The night fox is a man of action. The competition he just won was unwinnable. It was rigged. He got his bank account robbed, as if LeMarc has just gone to his house and bagged 97 millions in bills and left. There's no way he wouldn't find a way to interfere with Benedict getting that money. Reuben delivers the check to Benedict... I guess the night fox stopping Reuben was just TOO crazy of a feat? He can out dance the lasers, but he can't lift the check off Reuben. Right.
      You seem to forget that LeMarc's ability to pay Benedict directly is impossible given his status, and so his "master plan" to forcibly steal 97 million from his student, invariably involves Ocean's team members and their respective vulnerabilities, which the Night Fox realistically could and would exploit to stop the theft of his money. Benedict not getting the money = Ocean's crew getting killed. This would give Tolour even more incentive to stop the check getting sent. He'd want to punish the people who just won the competition by cheating, punish the guy who orchestrated it, plus get his money back. He gets all THREE by stopping the money transaction, which wouldn't be that hard for someone like him as he has infinite more public maneuverability than LeMarc. We know Tolour is cruel enough to do something like this ("you'll be dead in a few days and I'll get my paintings back")

      Patrick Boberg completely disagree. I hate when they have ppl hosting the pod that aren’t “all in” on the movie. The picking nits and “what’s aged the worst” sections are supposed to be done reluctantly, because the hosts would prefer to talk about the things they love about the movie.
      That’s why i think the Dark Knight, Inception, Wedding Crashers, etc pods are not that good because some of the hosts become too “film-critic-y”, whereas a true, fun rewatchables pod is when several hosts spend 90 minutes saying “who-tf cares why some ppl don’t like this movie” and then over-gush about the things they like.
      Case in point Bill Simmons and Chris Ryan did a Heat rewatchables pod TWICE. That ridiculous, over-the-top passion for something they enjoy is why this pod is so successful and why many (not all) of the episodes are fun to listen to, even if sometimes the listener might not concur with a movie’s “rewatchability”.

      @@KDOGGBOI I agree with this, the Inception rewatchable is mostly spent criticizing the movie. The subjective nature of the podcast is what makes it great. This is why most of the best episodes feature Bill. Not that you couldn't do a good podcast built around picking a movie apart.

    Love the Rewatchables, but this trio just didn't really have much chemistry which is kind of funny considering they were talking about a movie based entirely on the chemistry of the cast. Not to mention the banter between Sean and Chris seemed to have less of a playful energy to it and it just seemed like Sean was pissed that he wasn't hosting this one.
