I lived in Az when I was a kid . My Dad worked for The Kennecott copper corp at Ray mines located near Kearny Az . They allowed visitors and we went on school field trips there . They kept a large pile of rocks near the entrance for visitors to take some home . They would make a scoop of the raw material from the bottom of the pit and bring it to the top for the pile. It was full of chunks of turquoise with copper mix around it some with crystals mixed in the turqoise absolutely stunning in this form . It looks more blue than the kingman turquose .I kept every piece and keep them inside my home on display
I just purchased some stabilized turquoise from the Colbaughs a couple of weeks ago. It came as a solid 1 lb. chunk and is very easy to work with. It's absolutely gorgeous and the price was $85 a pound. You can't beat it. I prefer natural turquoise, but I can't find pieces that large anywhere without spending a fortune.
Thank you so very much, how refreshing to watch someone who is down to earth and enjoys spreading his knowledge without being pretentious. I have never seen such large pieces of turquoise ever. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.
I just visited Cherokee North Carolina and bought a beautiful Kingman cabochon ring from the Art Center. I just love that true blue color. Sometimes you'll find vintage pieces and antique stores, extremely costly. Kingsman turquoise is my absolute favorite.
What a sensational video - I had been very concerned about the treatment of some turquoise I purchased. I have been tearing the internet to pieces trying to find out more, but now you have answered my questions. I was told it was 'high grade stabilized' and like you say - i thought this was a contradiction and they were talking rubbish - and they just couldn't tell me any more about it! Thank you again!
Thank you for this lovely video. I just fell in love with turquoise. I like the raw turquoise better than the polished. You are a very knowledgeable young man. Mahalo for sharing your knowledge.
Albeit 2 years ago; this video is really good 👍 and helps me to learn about turquoise from an expert. I watch all your videos and your dad’s from 10 years ago. Thanks 🙏 Shaun in Wimauma Florida Spent a lot of time in Durango calling on UBC lumber.
I was thinking about buying a turquoise belt buckle but now you got me thinking of just making my own! I think I like the Ethika peak turquoise the best ! Great video thank you!
Well done and I informative. I've notice it's difficult to tell some Kingston from Royston stones. I'm now convinced the bolo I recently purchased is indeed old pawn unstableized Kingston turquoise as it was sold and even without an identifying stamp the seller knew the silversmiths name despite some pieces being made in the 70's with no silversmith markings. I happen to love the look of natural stones and sought out deeper greens with nicely balanced golden brown matrix for character. As you point out, value has many variables but the most important being if it gives the buyer joy to look at the stone and it's delivery system, the jewelry it sits in.
@@drdeb_ocherry Old pawn doesn’t necessarily mean what people imagine. Kingman Ceremonial is my favorite. I live in Puget Sound where we have moss and underwater kelp forest ecosystems and Ceremonial Kingman looks just like that!

Natural is the only way to go. ( it's national all-natural day) also Mac cheese day... Just so much beauty in his hands! Can you imagine what's in that box is worth! Wow!
I have a very old large Kingmen Black Web Spider Bola Tie which has a crack in it, but still holding together well in the Bezel. It almost looks too large and could actually be used to make two rings if taken out of the current Bezel, but I really want to leave it alone. It is about 2 or 3 times larger than the stones shown in the rings you have here. What can I do to secure the stone, as since it has a crack in it (which is not always visible) in the Bola Bezel? I would guess a piece of metal put across the stone would look great however I know that heating up a Bezel to do the work might damage the stone. Any ideas would be appreciated. I think it is natural and not stabilized, but I know that is hard to determine by a novice like me.

Very educational, in a pleasant sort of way. Is it possible to select and buy a cabochon from you, and then have it made into a particular type of ring? I am looking for something somewhat heavy and solid for an oval cab aproximately 1 inch x 3/4 inch, size 11 1/4, with only a few simple, subtle lines on the silver. I'm a guitar player, and too much decorative work would snag on the strings. I want something nice.
Great video That first box of turquoise looks like royston, lol...i know its not One on those last 2 webbed rings looks kind of like bisbee. I like your presentation style. Some other folks go over the top but your steady even honest presentation style is much better.
I have a ton of turquois that I inherited from my grandpa. He and my dad owned two mines in Austin Nv named Shoshone and Little Blue Bird. I never hear about turquois from these mines. How do I find more info? I am getting into silversmithing. Alot is not stabilized as my dad said they didn't do anything like that and he had never heard of that. I have a lot of cabochons but they are soft. And I have a ton of raw turquois uncut. A lot of what I have is a blue rock with black which it was in chert I believe.
Great video!! and thank you very very much for sharing. What do they actually do to stabilized the turquoise((what is the process)?? How may I buy turquoise in volume ( big tub)like you??? Thank you, Cory
Sure, Turquoise is stabilized by soaking it in a resin for several months, then sun drying it for several months. Simple but effective. You can buy bulk from us by contacting John Hartman at john@durangosilver.com
Hi, thanks for the information. That was beautiful jewelry. I was looking for sources for ore samples you can carve into crystal skulls. I am learning to carve and love the energy of turquoise. I wanted to start off with a couple of pieces that were big enough to end up with a 3-5 inch crystal skull. Eventually buying more gemmy pieces that would likely be smaller. I am developing a relationship with one of the world's best carvers to buy regular ore samples from me and I am laying the groundwork for Turquoise, Malachite, Chrysocola and Azurite.
