Great ethical harvest. At least you won't have to eat it. Maybe make SMASHburgers with the little bit of meat you take home. Glad you took a deer out of an area that has very few deer. That makes it even more respectful to the people that live where you hunt. Thanks for your participation. I wonder who owns the farm field you walked in to recover the deer??
@@kshoey73 plenty of deer in that country bud and didn’t ruin much meat. You gotta kill em before you can eat them and things are always perfect. I know it’s easy to judge others and say whatever you want on the internet but we had a great hunt. The fields we drug the deer through were all block management. Thanks for watching… sorry our hunt didn’t live up to your expectations. The SMASHburgers were amazing 🍔
Tough focused hunters! My kind of hunt. Open country with variable wind conditions make for a challenge. Difficult to get solid rangefinder readings. You both stayed focused. 338 did the job. Leading a moving target is difficult. Choosing a heavy quality bullet certainly made the difference. Less drift and massive internal effect. Having hunted across the west I can attest to how tough mule deer are. Bullet placement is critical and WE all do our best to make the perfect shot. But I hunt in those conditions every year so I train under those situations chasing coyotes during the winter to confirm my dope out to 1000yds. I have taken deer, elk and antelope out to 800 yds. It’s not for everyone. Gentlemen congratulations on your effort, meeting the challenge and successfully following up on a wounded awesome buck. Keep doing what your doing. So nice video! Just a couple questions. Josh said, "long range rifle." What caliber/model was the other guy shooting? Most, if not at all .300 and .30-06 rounds will have significant drop and loss in knock down power past ~450 yards, even for custom rounds. I could be wrong, but I would be surprised if you guys were using anything larger than a .300 ultra mag for mule deer. I'm curious what factors you guys used to make the decision to take a shot at 600+ yards, especially given that you ended up with what looked like one or two gut shots before the kill shot. We've found that anything beyond ~500/550 yards with a .300 often has too little knock down power to give clean shots. What do you think? I love eastern Montana, and the mule deer hunting is fantastic. Nice work!
Eric from Hoover Precision was shooting a 338 Ultra Mag with 260 grain bullets from Hammer Bullets. He is an NRA high master F class shooter so he was very comfortable with that shot. Thanks for watching.
Yes Brady it was a BMA and we're very grateful to have the opportunity to hunt large tracts of private land throughout the state thanks to the Block Management program and generous land owners. The hunt was not on publicly owned land (State or Federal) , however, any resident or non-resident can access it by signing in. This was a Type 1 BMA and all we had to do was sign into the box and hunt, an opportunity we, the Public Land Hunter are very fortunate to enjoy. Type 1 does not restrict the number of hunters or require reservations. Thanks for watching and good luck out there this season!
Not to be critical, but as long as y’all take to get set up, take ranges, load your gun, set up some more, etc, I surprised anybody ever kills a mule deer. They must not be the sharpest knives in the drawer.
Eric is a precision rifle builder and is a former grand master in F class… definitely qualified to shoot at that range. I know everyone on the internet is an expert marksman and have never had to take a follow up shot. Sometimes even at close range a follow up shot is necessary.
@@michaelmarshall1651 a legally harvested deer on a deer hunt is a bad outcome? The deer made it out of the field to the adjacent coulee a hundred ish yards from impact and would have died there regardless of the follow up shot. We had a great hunt capped off with a great deer and memory regardless of your opinion. Have a good one Michael.
338 rum gets the job done. Went to a 338 win mag in Montana years ago and never regretted it. Job well done all the way around!
It’s a great caliber! Good luck this season
If you can’t get within 2-300 yards you are not a hunter, you are a shooter
If you can shoot it with a bow your a shooter not a hunter.

Great video man
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
Public Land Mule Deer that you shot off a wheat field that's clearly in BMA as per your onX map?

Good video Josh 👍
Thanks 👍

Nice work just slinging rounds 600 plus yards at a walking deer 😂
Ya bud!
Thanks Logan! We appreciate the support!
This is a good video to show people what not to do. You're shooting WAY past your effective range, leading to a not clean and efficient kill.

@HuntMontana don't care what his "qualifications" are, he shouldn't have made that shot, as evidenced by the outcome. Piss poor hunting ethics.

Don’t shoot past 500 guys, it’s just not worth it.
