The best comprehensive review thus far. I put over 1000 miles on my RCR and I agree with this review 100%. I would like to add if you have a child or petite riding partner, you can install rear pegs and it works pretty well. They recommend keeping the weight under 350 lbs.

23:00 not sure I agree. It’s a very tried and true reliable build. It’s not intimidating in the slightest. It’s an ebike that supports AND encourages mods. But keeping it stock “off the line” it’s still going to have the durability to get novice riders around for a long while. And considering it a low mechanical machine with accessible contact with onyx themselves (having told me when I ordered mine) to help walk you through any potential maintenance your bike may need, I think it’s the farthest thing from intimidating. ESPECIALLY when considering how expensive it is. They’re a very cool and supportive company. I don’t think anything on this bike is too technical to fix with the aid of a TH-cam video, Reddit post, or calling onyx directly. And that’s if the problem isn’t intuitive itself. Great in depth review though, and I love the graphic on the side panel. Might do something similar to mine!
it's not about mods being difficult, it more that I think there were many people who bought the kickstarter expecting a fully flushed out production emoped.... which I'd argue the ONYX is not. It has some quirks and issues and I think it's important that buyers have their expectations set of what they'll receive if they order and be prepared to tinker. The mods and issues arent difficult or deal breakers for me, but to many people who've never played with bikes it still can be, especially if you dont have a friend/resource group nearby.
Great honest review. I'm a fellow michigander and ebike rider. I've been thinking about getting one of these rcr bikes as an alternative from a motorcycle. I love my Ariel rider x-class for my daily work commute but for those times when I might want more speed and range then the rcr would be a great fit. I hope to meet you on some of the group rides, be safe and have fun!
This was amazing👌😎❤️🤘. You killed this from beginning to end and threw a cherry on top just to top it off. Superb review. How many miles have you put on your onyx rcr cafe blaster?
I’m somewhere around 1300-2000 miles if I had to guess. The odometer isn’t the most accurate as it resets when the battery is disconnected so that is a rough estimate.
@@mirandys I wonder if someone has modded this with a "power outage" small battery install to keep the memory alive when the main battery is disconnected.
Thought this was an amazing review am now considering one of these for sure. I'd love to see you take a look into the huck 2000 line of electric mopeds. Only thing on the market that really comes close to this.
Aaaaalmost wrapped it up with, "Thanks for coming to my TED talk" :) Loved the video, and think it'll be a great resource for those evaluating the bike. Thanks for making it!
Hey randy, fellow metro Detroit resident looking to buy the rcr. Because of our unpredictable weather, how’s your experience with rain/light snow been? Has the bike held up in the rain? Can you leave it outside every now and then and not worry about the rain? Thank you so much!
Experience in bad weather has been fine. Obviously the bike isn’t waterproof, but it’s pretty water resistant and can be made even more so with a couple simple modifications like adding weather stripping. I’ve left it out in the rain while running errands a few times and have had zero issues
Sadly Michigan changed the requirements for a moped limiting them to 30 MPH. This is the main reason I ordered an e-bike. I started looking at electric motorcycles and mopeds last year but decided to go with an e-bike to avoid registration. I live in a smaller town and do not have a motorcycle endorsement. Since class 3 e-bikes can go up to 28 MPH I talk myself into one. If the old definition still applied I might have gone with this moped. It sounds a lot like what I was looking for a year ago!
Awesome review! Very thorough, and perfect as I'm in the same spot looking at a used one. I'm just a few miles up Woodward, and feel the same vibes on aesthetics and sweet spot - I'll reach out if I pull the trigger on it!
Hey Miranda! This is a great review of the Onyx! We met awhile back through Alanna when you let us film in your living room for Ash & Erie lol. I have a modified Super73 and I think Alanna has a Juiced? We should do an ebike video collab one day!
The most useful TH-cam I've ever seen! Thank you. So many questions but is this okay for 2 people for a few miles (less than 350 pounds combined). Also, if I buy the rear rack what do you recommend for baskets or something for groceries for example? Thank you.
I am seriously thinking of getting one of these Ebike with the 41ah battery i have already a long list of parts if i do get one.. you said that you lived in detroit and was wondering did you register it as a moped? and if so how much is the cost of the insurance.
Great Onyx bike review and I have already placed an order for one before watching your video and everyone’s common complaint is the battery cover, so could you leave a link or designate the brand and store your purchased the battery extension cable
Randy S: I am embarrassed to say but I don’t really watch or use TH-cam a lot and I increased the video size and scrolled to the both of all the replies and I never saw a link to the battery extension cord. What am I doing wrong such that I don’t see your posted link?
What if you put a larger and brighter set of tail/brake light and turn signals on the back and sides of your rear basket? I got rear-ended (in my car when stopped at a red light) by a truck the other day. That extra lighting higher up and out on your rear basket could give an oncoming vehicle just enough extra reaction time to avoid hitting you. Especially since people text and drive these days.
How's riding it around in Michigan? I'm on the westside of the state with a preorder on a Super73 but their communication and customer service has really been lack luster. I know our state doesn't exactly have the nicest roads lol but has that been an issue for you at all? Love the decals on the side of the bike btw.
Riding around Detroit has been great so far! If you’re used to riding mopeds, the ONYX is I’d say a slightly more comfortable ride overall. I will say my communication with CS at ONYX has been superb even as a used bike buyer. They’ve sent me free replacement parts no questions asked for things like the brake caliper and the motor wire metal spacer, and overall have been very responsive. I do not regret my decision at all.
I like to revisit Onyx videos once in a while to check in. Do you still use yours since the company closed down? Ive put 12k miles on mine since i last commented 2yrs ago.
Question, Have you ridden the bike in the rain, or through puddles? How does it handle in the rain but more importantly do you get splashed really hard when going through water since you dont have fenders. Thanks!
omg the weight on that e-bike... and i was complaining about my 70lb e-bike... but honestly, that look fun to ride, but def no street legal in NJ i don't think
Great review. Wondering if you still have yours. I am seriously thinking of getting one. Would love to know if you recommend all these many months later.
Still have it. Still enjoy it. However, the current price is fairly high imo for a bike with the build quality issues I have seen. I purchased mine used and at about 50% less than what they cost new now, so while I don’t regret my purchase, I don’t know if I could justify current new pricing. With the Sondors MetaCycle coming out and Cake Bikes new lineup (like their Makka bike) it seems that better build quality at this price point is either already here or right around the corner
Great review. I've been thinking about purchasing one. I live in the Pointes and commute all side streets thru Detroit to Dearborn for work. My only concern is the legality. Did you register the bike as a moped or motorcycle? I find the laws in Michigan a little unclear regarding E-Bikes.
We purchased this Vivi 27.5” electric bike and a Tentaquil 26” electric bike for our 13 and 14 year olds. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxUiL0GnyDjP32RJdd660sP8mZk4CRLTCJ The Vivi was much easier to put together. With the Vivi, there was a video link to assist with assembly which made the process easier to follow (we did put the handlebars on upside down, but it was a quick and easy fix). With the Tentaquil, the assembly was not as simple to follow, but after we messaged the company for an assembly video, it was easier and they did respond quickly. The other major differences were that the Vivi has a grip throttle on the right handle (like a motorcycle) and the Tentaquil has a push throttle that you use your thumb to activate. The monitors were also different, so if you’re looking for something specific in terms of changing the bikes functions, pay attention to what the monitor offers. We were really impressed with the overall quality and functionality of both bikes, but if you’re looking for more power and an easier assembly, definitely go with the Vivi!
What do you think of the Super73? I was looking at the Super73 RX... For one thing it's a little cheaper and a couple of the accessories seem nice. Also I was thinking it might be nice/comfortable sitting upright more on the Super73....?
I like the general design and specs but looking at how you are sitting on it and where the pedals are relative to my modified mountain bike, seems like it would feel weird or hurt my knees, so long legs = bad but also if someone has short arms it would also be uncomfortable.
I loved your review! My only critique (not really tho) is that it was quite hard to hear you. I had to really listen hard, but I loved all the knowledge you just poured into this review. I’m going to sell some gym equipment and probably order this bike with off-road tires. Also, while I don’t have a ton of mechanical bike experience, I love that it does require some mild level maintenance. I’m willing to learn by trial and error to progress in that knowledge. And, while not massively mechanical, I’m definitely not inept so I’m excited to get started. Side note: can your led tail light still be seen with the basket on? Thanks 🙏
Ive had my rcr for about 2 years now and you did a great "normal person review" of the bike. Thank you very much, normal person. kidding..of course. Few things though: (1) can you do a separate video showing how you replaced the rear shock? (2) how are you not able to break 50mph? is that from a full charge? (3) check out huck cycles, love to know your thoughts.
no need to detach the hub motor from the bike (no need for full disassembly)... you can get the spacer on by sliding the axel off the dropouts and then right back on.
I’m 5’9 with long legs and am just barely flat footed on the bike. If you don’t mind being on your toes a little standard is likely fine, if you want to be flat footed consider shrty
In Ct the requirement would be to ride it under 25 mph which is easily achieved with the riding modes. Basically these days (sept 2020) the police aren’t doing anything to anyone on the road unless you crash
How much does it weigh without the battery? Im kinda interested on buying one. The downside for me is that i live upstairs. So would it be easy to lift the bike without the battery
Amazing review, best I’ve seen so far. I’m considering this bike for my NYC commute. Question regarding the weight, do you think this bike would be too cumbersome to get into a second floor apartment using a stairwell?
Everyday? Yeah I’d say it’s waaaay to cumbersome. Once a season and you have a friend to help? That’s doable. I’ve seen one guy on the RCR MODS Facebook group that carries his up and down a flight of stairs and had a good method of doing so, but I know he had to remove the rear rack to do it, as basically you are carrying the bike up leaning back on the back wheel only with the front wheel in the air like on a dolly. That’s the only way I could envision you doing it regularly. It’s a heavy ass bike. I put mine in the basement over the winter to do some mods indoors and it was a total bitch to move with 2 people. No way you could do it alone safely.
I’d say your better bet it to get two really good locks and a cover or something for outdoor storage on a daily basis and maybe move it inside only seasonally. Unless you do the dolly method and don’t need the rear rack.
Those birds gave an excellent review of that bike. You should redo this video because I can't hear anything you're saying. Im not hating either. I want this bike. I really want to hear your review on it before I get excited though

@@mirandys Thank you!
This is the most detailed video on the RCR. Thank you so much
Was wondering if u can link the headlight grill please
Great review. I've been thinking about purchasing one. I live in the Pointes and commute all side streets thru Detroit to Dearborn for work. My only concern is the legality. Did you register the bike as a moped or motorcycle? I find the laws in Michigan a little unclear regarding E-Bikes.
How much is this bike? Im buying hope it is around $200.
Hi, how well it goes on snow days?
+Randy S great video thank you. Can you purchase a bigger seat for a companion as well as passenger foot pegs?
You're cool!!😎 Excellent review!! I'm gonna get an RCR to compliment my EUC's!
Would it hard to vregister this as moped? Also in Michigan. Thank you.
Thanks 🙏
Could you maybe post a video on a ride using the onyx showing what it is capable off?
How did you attach that box on your rear rack?
Probably the most through review for Onyx anywhere.
I actually misspoke about top speed, should have said 60mph. I dont think ive every taken it that fast personally though
Awesome video again! I'm getting the rear motor phase wire spacer. How were you able to install it? Does it require removing the rear wheel? Thanks!!
no need to detach the hub motor from the bike (no need for full disassembly)... you can get the spacer on by sliding the axel off the dropouts and then right back on.
question im 5.7 would the standard bike be good for me?
I’m 5’9 with long legs and am just barely flat footed on the bike. If you don’t mind being on your toes a little standard is likely fine, if you want to be flat footed consider shrty
Cool thank you.
How did you get that basket to hold up
One day I want to spend a weekend in Detroit I never been to the state of Michigan
You should. Detroit is the best kept secret of the Midwest
Did you ride it in the rain? Did you had any problems? Any issues with electronics?
I have ridden in light rain but not a downpour. Bike seems decently water resistant but I wouldnt classify as water proof.
In Ct the requirement would be to ride it under 25 mph which is easily achieved with the riding modes. Basically these days (sept 2020) the police aren’t doing anything to anyone on the road unless you crash
This is a great build! Great info as well.
You need an EUC!
Good video but your audio was a little low. I really appreciate the honest and fair review plus the tips. I so want the RCR!
Thanks so much! If you do decide to order down the road, I have a $100 off ONYX referral code that you are welcome to use: rwrd.io/8yhry31
what would make your Channel get a GoPro for your helmet and do some motovlogs as you ride this i think it be cool to see you driving around
Those birds gave an excellent review of that bike. You should redo this video because I can't hear anything you're saying. Im not hating either. I want this bike. I really want to hear your review on it before I get excited though
Where did you get the minimal turn signals? Those are exactly what I was looking for for my electric converted Garelli.
She said on the video - AliExpress for like $7-$8
Love that rack basket! Is it quick release?
No, unfortunately it’s not quick release I wish! That’s the only thing I’d change about it!
You are just cool. Great review
Hi I was trying to find out from u my rcr is going to come with the standard rack but the bag and extension for the bag to rest on is much bigger than the Standard rack for
Is their away to send you the link or something so you can tell me if you feel their is a way to mount it to the back
Great video! I love your narratives!
If only I could hear her voice over the birds chirping lol
