I just finished up a budget build with Advent 9-speed on a drop bar. I’m very impressed. Super-easy to set up and it shifts just fine. It feels different than Shimano or SRAM. But it works.
Wow. I guess I got lucky. Or even better, my local bike shop has some really knowledgeable employees. When I described that I'm a brand new rider with 80% road for exercise, and 20% dirt/gravel when I'm camping, they sold me a Specialized Sirrus X 3.0 with the Microshift Advent 1x9 (with clutch). I've had it for a month now, and I've put on about 250 miles. I bent the shifter when I was loading it in the car and it still shifted fine. I'm quite happy with the whole set up, and your video gives me confidence that I have the right gear.
I REALLY LOVE MY ADVENT. I BOUGHT THE 2X9 LONG CAGE. IT HAS THE PRECISION OF A DEORE, 535% RANGE (22x36 crowns, 11-36 cassete), cheap reposition parts (less than a third of a good 12 speed), Almost 3 months of hard riding and NO adjustments needed. IT IS AWESOME. IM FROM SÃO PAULO STATE, NO ONE EVER HEARD ABOUT IT.
Bought my first real bike (specialized diverge E5) back in March. It has an eight speed Claris groupset and it's honestly more than I need. My friends ride old 2x6 bikes from the 80's because it's all they can justify buying and they've never had any complaints.
I am right now upgrading my kids bikes from twist to switch shift and MicroShift has come through as my top choice! Never even heard of the company before this venture but I am sure glad I did.
You break a chain, you can't ride; it's just that simple. I'd rather use the stronger, slightly thicker chain and stay in the game. Peace, my friend!!!!
I love your classic quote from ACN show “your about ready for a new 12 Speed chain, just after you open the pack of your new 12 chain” until you start seeing big bike Manufacturers using stuff like Microshift nothing will change I’m afraid.
I got back into cycling 2 years ago and previous to that the las bike I rode was in early 2000s when I was a teenager. I bought a mountain bike from Decathlon which was discounted at 360 euros right after the pandemic cycling boom. The thing is equipped with a microshift advent drivetrain but I honestly didn't know what that that meant and it could have been Decathlon own brand from what I knew. I rode that thing everywhere and in terms of maintenance I probably have cleaned and lubed the bike 3 or 4 times. So I got used to the way it was shifting and taught that if this was the lowest of low end bike then surely anything more expensive had to be better. So I bought a Genesis Fugio earlier this year equipped with Sram 11 speed Apex drive train. And since the whole bike was 5 times more expensive surely it had to be noticeably better in many ways right ? Disappointment ensued shortly after. Shifting feels the same when everything is in perfect working order. By that I mean that the more expensive drivetrain recquires to be spotless and is way more susceptible to make funny noises when covered with muck or isn't perfectly lubbed. The best I can say is that I got two extra gears and I honestly don't think that this makes much of a difference to a recreational use. It feels like a side grade more than anything else. You sacrifice ease of use and maintenance for a slight gain in performance which makes no sense to me given the huge price increase. It's the same thing for everything else about this new bike honestly. I like to treat myself with fancy stuff from now and to end up on a positive note I'd say it's pretty amazing what you can get for a price that cheap, but you don't know that until you compared it to more expensive stuff. And there are definitely parts worth investing money into. The most surprising to me was getting different handlebars with more sweep and decent grips. Being comfortable made me ride faster, more regularly and more confident. Also getting decent tires and going tubeless. Generally speaking I'd say having a simpler and cheaper bike allowed me to be more comfortable tinkering and doing my own maintenance which in turns allow to ride with more confidence. I'm more in tune with a bike that I maintained and modified myself than my expensive gravel bike that I have to bring to my lbs every time I need a tune up or don't have specific tools.
Don't forget Suntour was huge in the 70s-80s.. but they virtually disappeared overnight in the early 90's when Shimano began to utterly dominate.. MicroShift works great, I've got 1x9 Microshift Marvo LT running on my Specialized Sirrus. Works and shifts great for such a cheap set.
I was looking at getting a microshift drivetrain but couldn't find anything in stock so I went with a box 3 prime 9 drivetrain. Works pretty well and it's also good for the price.
Absolutely love my Advent 9s. Wide range cassette, Clutched rd, chain and shifter all well under $200 No issues over the last 8mos, dozens & dozens rides. Just reliable, and have gotten a couple of friends to switch!
I use Microshift components too. But i just got a Deore 10 speed drivetrain for $120 including shifter, clutch rear derailleur chain, and 11-42 Cassette. All shimano parts. Better value to me. But all that really matters is we are both happy.
I got my Advent 9s drivetrain for $130. It's so frkn reliable. Literally needed no tweaking at all on first install which is probably more to do with luck. Put it on an old GT Avalanche with a modernized 1x9 setup.
Video quality looks really good in this one, just started watching and it really stood out. I know you've talked about getting new gear recently. Definitely looks like it's paying off
Fantastic video! I dig how your style has evolved and really love the attitude and approach in this video. Nice work. And, you just saved me a ton of $$ on a 1x9 conversion. Thanks.
I am fairly new to bike mechanics. I just, however, set up Advent 9-speed with drop bars this past weekend. Frankly, it was really straight-forward. Within 15 minutes, I had the thing shifting like champ. I like that. The shifters also have a nice hand feel and seem pretty solid. I'll ignore the shift cable coming out the side. I have not ridden the bike yet. It needs a tire (important, I think). But likely this weekend.
Amen. Back in the day, I used to be an XT / XTR guy. Now I very rarely go above SLX or SRAM GX. When you let that racing mentality go, you start saving a bunch of money, and you know what,...riding your bike is still a shit load of fun?
I want to go with micro shift on my surly build, but it wasn’t available. Really cool drivetrain. Currently, I’m happy with the Shimano Deore 11 speed set up.
I had to order the Advent stuff from Germany to Canada, came in around $140cdn for the mech, shifters and cassette which seemed decent enough. They also had the X which in hindsight I should have ordered for the extra gear.
@@Spindatt Guess what, the advent x cassettes just became widely available on the web!...I went a little ocd and bought a half dozen on eBay, (down to around $40 = unbelievable value!). Not usually a hoarding type, but what with the long waiting periods for advent x, (along with bike industry in general), and having recently converted both my mtb & cross bike to 10spd ("downgraded" both bikes from 1 x 11), wanted to have the necessary cassette stock on hand for the next few years!
What truly interests me in the Microshift lineup is the Acolyte group. For what and where I ride I think it might just be proper answer. Just have other bikes I want to get going before fixing an issue that doesn't exist.
When trials riding years ago if you wanted gears at the same time we ran Shimano Sora or Tiagra mechs because they where so small and with normal index shifters with no issues
i own 3 group sets of advent 9, 1 has been through hell and works amazing, its gotten bent, beat and with my own hands i bent it back and it still shifts fine, index issues are none, and my other 2 dont have enough time on them. they are pretty much brand new, I am so impressed by this group set, I may just replace my shimano deore 10 speed with an advent x when it wears out.
I got a bike off the internet in early 2021; it's a Gravity Trail HD with the Advent 1x9. To date it has held up pretty well. The smallest sprocket's teeth are are worn and I can only use 8 gears now. It would be real nice to have my top gear back so I should get the parts and watch some youtube videos so I can install it myself. Anyway the point of my comment is that even 8 gears works great for getting around everywhere(hills and long distance).
Amen to the 12 speed snake oil. I trashed a SRAM SX derailleur twice in the first 2000 miles on streets and gravel roads. I upgraded to GX but will evolve to an aftermarket solution as a want to be some high plains drifter hundreds of miles from a decent bike shop, or home. Not a place to drop a crystal drive.
My most reliable mtb is an ancient Rocky Mountain with a 9 speed cassette in the rear with a triple chainring setup up front. All mid-level Shimano components. Absolutely bomb proof. I've used microshift components here and there on other bikes & never had any problems
Same sort of thing! I love the way a nice wide chain shifts over the cassette. Always such a satisfying confirmation that the guide pulley has the chain at the right spot. That feeling is lost a little bit on tighter cluster cassettes
the new 12 speed Deore drivetrain is bulletproof the clutch is super easy to service and I've had the bike for 6 months and I've never touched the barrel adjuster I've crashed way too many times and the shifting is still super smooth
and now they have 8 speed with a clutch. Or at least its on the way. lol still cant find advent X stuff would like to have it. I have advent on my wife's bike and its nice. plus the have sweet thumbies and bar end shift options.
Ive been looking at Advent and Advent X groups for months now. Still not sure I am ready to move away from Shimano. I like having the option to do so however!
@@Spindatt I'd like to. As a primarily singlespeed rider, I prefer the road-oriented, low range, cadence-priority, 2 tooth cog jumps over a majority of the cassette. I like a clutched derailleur however because all drivetrains sound clunky over rock gardens compared to singlespeed. Currently I am running a 32x21 setup on the Chumba Sendero frame, so maybe a 11-28t cassette would be fine for me with the Advent der and shifter? Seems like a downhillers cog set, but would prevent me from wanting to rack up the singlespeed to drive the 5 miles to the trailhead if I can pedal up to 25mph on the flats. Any thoughts Eric?
Yup, just put this on my old 1999 Stumpjumper Comp and it's been great getting back out to riding. They've been great shifting and the 1x is way better than the old 3x LX/XTR setup I had. The only thing I miss from the old setup is the windows showing the gear. I don't miss the horrible chain suck from the front 3x though.
Exceptionally good video work - an anthem for the hard-to-kill groupsets. “dainty” definitely isn’t the word I think of when it comes to my 12spd XO1 setup, but I admit I would probably never pay full price for these parts. Now they go up to 10-52t I look forward to the 10-50t stuff going on sale. Incidentally: Independent testing done by zerofrictioncycling suggests 12spd chains actually last as long (or longer) than their lower-speed counterparts. Sure you can poke holes in their methodology, but it’s maybe better than anecdotes. I welcome more competitors to this market (Advent, Box etc.), as long as they promise not to invent more hub driver standards.
Lol I’ll have words to say if there are new hub driver standards! You are right, I’m slightly harsh on 12 speed.. my GX eagle actually works pretty awesome. After the chain broke and the NX derailleur failed to the point of unserviceable.. kind of my main complaint really
Riding a fixie will make you less fussy about close ratios. Been over biked for some time. No need for 20X 34 granny here. 32X32 8 speed is enough. Have not tried Microshift because my Shimano stuff still works great. Would consider it if twigs tear my derailleur off again. SRAM, well GXP is defective.
I put a microShift mega range (11-46) 9 cassette on my fat tire bike and love it!! Kept the Shimano parts already on and it works but I think I'm going to change it all to MS. Put road brifters on a friends bike because she's 5ft tall and has tiny hands. She likes it better than her Ultergra. Big fan of microShift and Box.
The same dynamic holds for nearly all sports, weekend warriors using equipment best suited for elite athletes while much more practical options are ignored. If you like bulletproof get your hands on a pinion gearbox/gates belt equipped bike. You can ride them like a rented mule with minimal maintenance.
Production quality on this one 👍. I’m still waiting for Advent X to come in to QBP. High demand apparently. Availability is the Microshift Achilles Heel right now. But when it does, it’ll be good. I run Microshift thumbies on two bikes and they are fantastic. Makes the Paul Thumbies with Shimano bar-ends combo clunky and obsolete. Go Microshift!
Same here and this lack of stock is my only real concern with Microshift. Not sure why they can't keep up with demand. I never see their products on the trails. Maybe 2% of the people I ride with have even tried their drivetrain components.
The cassettes are now widely available! I went a little nuts and bought a half dozen on ebay (now down to around $40 - unbelievable value!) for both my mtb and X bikes which have been recently converted "back" to 10 speed, (lol they have "de-volved" from 11spd). Am using 10spd Saint shifter w/Deore m6000 derailleur and the setup is awesome - the fantastic shifting of shimano's finest bearing-engineered shifter, (no bushings on Saint, it's xtr level quality), and superior range of Advent X cassette. Loving the results!
DAINTY DRIVETRAIN USER AND AM PROUD interesting take, I’ve enjoyed my shimano 11/12spd setups. Both do require chains more frequently than I’d like though.. Miss u!!😘
So I got this barely used Sunrace MZ90 12spd cassette for the price of a 12pk of beer. I've been doing research on derailleurs and shifters and I'm starting to think I may just go with the Advent X groupo. My bike has a 9spd and converted to a 1x with and oval chain ring so I think this would be a decent upgrade. Great video!
I got the Advent X flatbar shifter and derailleur from a guy on ebay and the cassette from Worldwide Cyclery back in the spring. Not easy, but they're floating around
Thanx, nice thought process. I have a 12 sp Sram on a new bike I bought a couple of months ago. Shifting went bad because of a derailleur that developed a fatal amount of wobble after a couple of months use by a guy over 60. I was so annoyed that I ordered a Microshift advent X set and Shimano brakes and threw out everything Sram. Overreacting? Maybe, but if you sell a product that bad, even if it is a cheap group, I don't want to be your customer.
@@Spindatt I know the feeling. Singlespeed chains allow for my lack of maintenance tendencies to get out of control at times. Finding that single quick link aint so easy on early morning rides in the dark. Maybe I should install just one more to double my chances of finding it. Hmm.
@@Spindatt You could get a video out of waxing a chain. I tried the Oz Cycling channel's teflon/wax recipe and it worked really well at keeping my chain clean and quiet. I switched bikes about 2 months after that and haven't waxed the chain on the new bike, but I intend to do so soon - in dry weather the gravel trail do most of my riding on will blacken a chain in a ride or two.
How about a video showing how the advent x works with a hybridized shimano setup. That way it is possible to enjoy the fantastic shifting qualities of shimano's best 10 speed era sti's....As an example, I recently "de-volved" both my mtb and X bikes from 11spd to the microshift cassette w/shimano 10 speed shifter and derailleurs: To be specific: Saint shifter w/Deore m6000 10spd derailleur, and the awesomeness of Advent's 11-48 cassette. Fantastic results!
Dumb question here. I have an old Cannondale F1000 circa 1996 with a 3x8 drivetrain that I would like to convert to a 1x. Would the microshift Advent setup with the 9 speed rear cog fit or should I go with the Acolyte 8 speed setup? Thanks for any advice in advance.
I have a Microshift XTR 10 speed groupset on my Decathlon triban 120 gravel and it works great. It's so refreshing to see a company shun the usual "corporate bollocks" when they talk to consumers...
Best video ever! I'm torn now: I really want to sub, but I also want to see that 100% quick link chain🤣. (BTW, I just installed AdventX on my Ragley. Love it.)
Im gunna need to give this microshift a shot man!!!! Im digging my box components 11speed on my fatty Running this picky sram 12speed is nice having the eagle gear but man is it picky.. maybe i just need a professional tuneup but it shouldn’t be this hard to make it run right!!! For farts sake man i built choppers and hotrods from the ground up!!!!!!
Wow, I just realized that this is literally like 2 minutes from my house. I love this trail. How has the drivetrain been holding up though? I’ve been looking into getting one for a while now.
While I absolutely agree that it is good to see these cheaper and possibly less finicky options become available, I have to also say that the current drivetrains from Sram and Shimano are both VERY durable. I have been mountain biking for over 20 years now and have never had less drivetrain failures than in recent history. I used to wear out chains on road bike in about 1000-1500 miles and now I'm closer to 2500 miles, on the mountain side I couldnt get more than 500 miles out of a chain without it exploding in some catastrophic way, not a single one of my 11 or 12 speeds have failed. Every time I have seen a 11 or 12 speed chain fail its been to poor installation (not saying they dont fail and I know there was a supply of bad material recently)
I like Microshift, but as long as OEMs don't spec it out of the box, the fact that: 1. the derailleur may or may not with with shimano shifters 2. the shifter+derailleur may or may not work with a 11-26 cassette CS HG9 makes the upgrade path fairly expensive who's just trying to upgrade from something like Sora to Advent for the clutch derailleur and wider cassette range. That is, until something goes mechanically wrong with the Sora shifter to justify the expense of a Advent shifter set.
I really wanted the Microshoft Advent groupset for my MTB... but it never was in stock. So I bought the deore m5120 RD and a sunrace 11-42 casette. Love it.
Amen on Microshift Advent drivetrains. They are awesome awesome awesomeness.
One day I want to just have a shelf full to put on project bikes at any moments notice lol

To be fair box started doing this first, it’s just that Microshift was able to get on oem bikes.
They aren’t quite there on price yet. Hopefully that will change?
Sram mtb products were first devenlope by french Sach wich TVE first bought
The same dynamic holds for nearly all sports, weekend warriors using equipment best suited for elite athletes while much more practical options are ignored. If you like bulletproof get your hands on a pinion gearbox/gates belt equipped bike. You can ride them like a rented mule with minimal maintenance.
This is what recent Altus should look like
You should be hired.
@@RideAlongside Global steel shortage. Not just bikes getting hit.
DAINTY DRIVETRAIN USER AND AM PROUD
interesting take, I’ve enjoyed my shimano 11/12spd setups. Both do require chains more frequently than I’d like though.. Miss u!!😘
I've got a box 1 11 speed drivetrain and it's straight. No problems. If put advent on any bike I have too
That down hill run was insane, and I loved it.
hey man how about the acolyte? planning on buying those but cant seem to find much reviews
Great video!
microshift looks hella cool but how does one buy the groupset? its proving hard to find on the internet
Yet here I am with AdventX and I've had more issues with it skipping gears than my SRAM SX I had it replace
Really? There’s always something with every group sets isn’t there.
Kinda want to build up a micrshift gravel grinder now, what brakes do they support?
Idk about that. Have been using 11 speed ultegra and 12 speed eagle for a while now and haven’t had any issues.
You should build a chain out of quick links. It’s would be heavy and expensive!
Heavy and expensive, but imagine the convenience of being able to open the chain where you want without having to look for the quick link!
lol the process of looking for the individual link can be a real pain when your chains are as dirty as mine
If you haven't seen it yet Seth over at Berm Peak did a whole quick link chain for a video.
They can't keep the stuff in stock which is all you need to know...The price point is right and I'll definitely use their parts in the future.
Fantastic results!
im currently using deore m61000
groupset but when i get a new bike i will try microshift advent it look good and ive seen pretty good reviews about it
Dont expect it to be better. Deore is nice stuff especially for price.
advent 8 speed user here, just the lowest end model they got. It's cheap, it shift well, easy to maintain.
nice video sir, still waiting for this two S companys to bend and make their own 9 speed clutched derailleur groupset.
i think shimano Alivio has shadow capability now? But they really don't talk about it very much
same
Dumb question here. I have an old Cannondale F1000 circa 1996 with a 3x8 drivetrain that I would like to convert to a 1x. Would the microshift Advent setup with the 9 speed rear cog fit or should I go with the Acolyte 8 speed setup? Thanks for any advice in advance.
that free hub body SHOULD fit the 9 speed cassette.
@@Spindatt Thx for the reply and the great videos. Keep it up. U have inspired to wrench on my owns bikes.
I've been looking for a video of a chain with all quick links...
I just built my dream bike with a brand new 10 year old 10spd group set for all those reasons.
Love it.)
I hope this company get popular enough for me to get that 2nd hand
Simple answer: singlespeed
Fixed so nobody can brag about how many points of engagement their freewheel has!
Who cares about engagement, when you don’t stop pedaling
When is the next episode of ACN?
Im gunna need to give this microshift a shot man!!!!
Im digging my box components 11speed on my fatty
Running this picky sram 12speed is nice having the eagle gear but man is it picky.. maybe i just need a professional tuneup but it shouldn’t be this hard to make it run right!!!
For farts sake man i built choppers and hotrods from the ground up!!!!!!
I agree completely, derailleurs need to be abolished and the gearbox needs to be developed further.
I could get into this
You should never compromise a good chain for weight. I'm old school for real.
Как насчёт совместимости с Шимано и срам
love the intro!
Where is the holiday discount link??? 😉
lol i don't have those kinds of connections in this world!
Maybe they never heard of Eli Whitney and interchangeable parts from like 200 years ago.
I think I'll be going with microshifts acoylite 8 speed with an archer dx1 trail
Bravo , bravo good sir !! I’ll take function for 40% OFF
I am trying to convince a friend to get Advent for his 10 yr old Mtn bike. He's still running the 2 x 10 setup
this video was really well made, my 12 speed shifts like shit
Cycling wisdom.👍
I like Microshift, but as long as OEMs don't spec it out of the box, the fact that:
1. the derailleur may or may not with with shimano shifters
2. the shifter+derailleur may or may not work with a 11-26 cassette CS HG9
makes the upgrade path fairly expensive who's just trying to upgrade from something like Sora to Advent for the clutch derailleur and wider cassette range.
That is, until something goes mechanically wrong with the Sora shifter to justify the expense of a Advent shifter set.
Agreed 👍
I really wanted the Microshoft Advent groupset for my MTB... but it never was in stock. So I bought the deore m5120 RD and a sunrace 11-42 casette. Love it.
I thought about doing this as well. The new deore 11 speed derailleur is much better than previous gen's.
minute 01.06
it seems a really good broom that one
try the sride groupset
#1x1 and done..
