I’ve been hammering mine since last August and I have to say I am very impressed. So much so that I am converting the Shimano XT drivetrain on my other bike to this setup. The clutch is really solid; have not dropped the chain once. I ride often and hard and its a clean running drive train that doesn’t go out of adjustment; simple as that. Another thing to mention is this thing works better in proper mud as well; I’m guessing due to the wider space between cassette cogs and nice stiff clutch. Worth every penny.
Good Feedback Nikolai, Dont think you can beat 8/9 speed gearing for real tough MTBing. Getting ready to build couple Touring Bikes @ 1x9, will start w/ shimano drivetrain & Sunrace Cassette, but may try this w/ Sunrace Rear. Thanks for feedback.
Absolutely love mine. Only issue I've had is the B adjust screw backing out over time. Easily solved with a drop of loctite. A perfect upgrade for a mid-level bike provided you can find a decent and affordable crank set.
I used Advent 9-speed with drop shifters on a budget gravel build. It’s rock solid. I’m very pleased with it. It’s a bit notchy in how it shifts. But that has a certain charm to it. For the price, it’s excellent.
And what chainring do you have. I want also buy the microshift gear 11x42. But I don’t know what kind of chainring. I am living in an area without hills and I will mostly drive in the city
James, love your channel. I'm new to biking. Walked into a bike shop looking for a "used $300 bike". Ended up buying a brand new Rockhopper 29er Comp. for $750. What a machine!; never would have anticipated how intricately engineered bikes are (my last bike was some kind of Trek Hybrid I bought 20 years ago). Your channel is making it easy for me to learn about my bike, its components, and what I purchased. Eg., the shop did not tell me about the clutch on the microSHIFT Advent 1x9. Still not clear on when to have the clutch on or off, but I'll get it. Also, the shop did not educate me that the shifter had multi-click on the downshifting (the "two throws" from hard to easy gear). Look forward to seeing if you have videos on all the other components of my RockHopComp. 29er (2021). Thanks for doing this channel!
I bought my 2022 rockhopper comp a couple of months ago for $750 during the fall flash sale. The microshift advent components work well. I always keep clutch on when riding. Positive reviews, only one review I read said he had a dropped chain every outing. All he had to do was adjust the tension on the derailleur. Wasn’t properly adjusted at manufacture..
Used this setup on two BBS-HD Ebikes. Performs well. The B-Limit (?) screw on the second instance needed a hardened steel pad to keep this crew from getting chewed up. Both of mine had Allen-head screws for all three screws.
Great video and for the new in box cost, this really is a phenomenal drivetrain bang for the buck. I am super stoked on it for restomods of old bikes. The folks that are putting this kit down, most likely haven't had it in their hands or ridden it on the trail. Good job Microshift.
Super review! I want to upgrade an old Trek 630 MB that I've been running with 8 speed, It's a butted steel survivor. Now the cassette is worn out and I need a cheap set to get all the newer features I miss. The Trek comes with Triple chaining, I'm going to get the clutch model and just leave it in the middle and see if I can get the chain to align as needed. I think that's been standard procedure for upgrades. It's a daily driver and I may even add batteries next upgrade. Unless I find a spare $2,000 to invest in a better spec 9-speed fat electric.
I just bought this groupset less than a week ago. In fact im still waiting for my cassette to arrive in the mail. Awesome video i cant wait to get it on and try it out. Great video, thank you🤘
I absolutly love this drivetrain!!! Waayyy better than the acera altus setup i had on my gt pantera! Iv upgraded everything except for my rims basically so far on my pantera lol. That wasnt my plan originally but since i put a longer travel fork a sr suntour raidon 120 to be exact and that transformed my bike so much that i just slowly upgraded every single thing on this bike. I love it! Keep up the great work. Love your channel👍
Came here to see review on this RD because my local bike change my RD to this because my bike is not shifting right on lower gear. From shimano Altus to Microshift Advent. Im happy that theres a lot of good reviews on it. Now need to test it myself hopefully I will be satisfied with the performance.
I'm working on a diamond back line and upgrading my drivetrain with the Advent 11x42 9 speed cassette and Microshift clutch derailleur and bearing shifter.
Get the Acolyte derailleur it works great with the Advent, Advent X cassettes. I'm running it with the 11-48T Advent X cassette and shifter. Pull ratios are the same. Someone is using Acolyte with Shimano 11 speed cassette/shifter.
Interesting review, thank you. Microshift brand comes standard on the Louis Garneau fat bikes, particularily the "Gros 3" model which has the Advent you reviewed. At this time Garneau is the only type available in my area (Canada) at bike shops. For a winter bike, I would expect the metal construction of the deralieur to be a good thing, plastic can become brittle in the cold and break. My only hesitation is that the bike is retailing at $1900 (CDN), which seems like a lot of money for a bike with a $125 transmission. Since fat bikes are pretty much unobtanium, and the Advent seems decent, the Garneau is probably not such a bad bike with this system.
Well done microshift.... Good quality components for a great price with the clutched derailleur combined with the shifter with the bearings and the all steel cassette the way to go. Some great value 1× drivetrains can be built with these components with an inline barrel adjuster just before the derailleur a good idea. 😎🇦🇺👍
I'm using this MicroShift 9 speed cassette on a Hyper Explorer MTB. It came as a 1x9 but with a Freewheel, not cassette. But I wanted to fit a spare Giant SR-2 wheelset I had laying around. Voila ! Grab this 9 speed Cassette & now I can use the lighter Giant Wheelset to convert my Hyper MTB into a Gravel Bike...
Please, I need an answer to this. I can only find cassette for the advent but not in freewheel. Where did you purchase the freewheel version? I just cannot find it.
They must have listened......mine came with Allen head adjustment screws. However, Not all shifters have barrel adjusters and its missing on these....tapped the cable boss 7mm and added a home made barrel adjuster and spring.
Microshift also has the derailleur fitted to work with their Advent 8speed Shifter. So their 9speed derailleur is also a 8speed derailleur Clutch driven system. And their cassette range from their 9 speed is exactly same for their 8speed. So Now people can have a high end clutch driven Derailleur at the little drive system of 8speeds. And high tooth count, without such a large range of gearing. Which turns into less chain bend then higher gear ratios have. Their Advent derailleur comes in Medium for 1by systems or Large for 2x+. So a 8-9 x1 or 8-9 x3 system.
Hey just FYI: That rear deraileur you have will actually accept an 11-46 tooth cassette. You said it would only handle a 42. Assuming we purchased the same one.
Mine is horrible the cable rubs on the deraileur so I have had to replace it multiple times and then get some type of solution so it does not rub as well one of the pins fell out of the cassette causing it to move and sound and shift like crap
James, glad I stumbled across your video. I was about to set off on my first project bike to teach myself some bike mechanicals. I have a 2003 Trek 820 I wanted to convert to drops and 1x9 but need to do it on the cheap. Are there road brifters that would work with this?
On the Xpress shifter, the lever that drives the derailleur into a harder gear, does it operate in both directions? Basically can in move to a higher gear with your pointer finger OR your thumb?
James, great video! I'm wondering what chain you'd recommend for this set-up hence the big jumps on speeds? Also, what kind of chainring would you recommend up front? Thanks for your work man.
Great video as always James! I have a question for you... I have a 1x drivetrain but want higher gearing so I want to get a bigger chainring however I am concerned it won't clear my chainstays and/or cause chainline issues. I have a Specialized Sirrus X 2.0. Any help with this would be much appreciated!
Blake, if the cassettes have the same amount of cogs, and your bike is already set up 1x, why do you have concerns with chainstay clearance and chainline? Just curious.
@@richarde1355 the bike came stock with a 40t chainring, I wanted to see how big of a chainring I could fit without it touching the chainstay. I was able to fit a 48t! This gave me the higher top end I needed
Hey, thanks for sharing all of this. I don’t know much about bikes but I’m looking to do the 10 speed shifter and derailer but I was going to use a different cassette that I could get in a more timely manner can I do that?
@@jrsx1129 I was going to get to 3.0 myself but they had a 2.0 in stock in my size so I took it I figure the $250 difference wasn't terrible and I can always upgrade
I have this deraileur and have snapped 5 cables in 2 months at the rear deraileur. They rub while shifting fray and then snap there. Anyone experienced this with this deraileur? Suggestions?
I'm assuming the cable is snapping right forward of the bolt that holds the cable end? When I looked at my derailleur it seems that there is a insert that is nice and smooth that guides the cable during shifts. That insert looks like a concaved hole that the cable slides over. I'm wondering is your mech missing that insert and the cable is running over the metal portion of the derailleur? TBH I haven't ran mine at all since I was just installing it last night.
So...on the front gear set with the pedals, you usually have a guard keep your pants leg ext from getting caught. The guards I see are usually plastic. Mine has broken off. What is that guard called to look for a replacement online?
Awesome video! I am upgrading a bike and just bought a new rear wheel with a freehub so I can run something like this! I am looking at the XLE 10 or 11 speed, should be about the same setup, just less jump between gears!
What is the pull ratio of that drivetrain? How much cable gets pulled at each gear change or how many millimeters does the derailleur move laterally for each millimeter of cable moved?
I'll let you know that shimano 9 speed shifter definitely did not work with this derailleur due to incompatible cable pull length. I believe shimano is less pull than the microshift
This is on the Specialized Rockhopper Comp. I demoed the bike a friend bought this summer. For a Microshift it works well. Its not SLX or XT or even Deore. Feels firm in the lever and shifts quite in the cassette. The company is known for making horrible parts for very low end bikes. This is not the case with this drivetrain....
Microshift is a tail of two sides, not unlike SR Suntour with suspension. They make el-cheapo parts on one side, and affordable quality parts on the other.
Don't forget, shimano all puts there name on garbage. I'm currently using the Advent to see what all about. So far so good. I bashed the deraileur around pretty good yesterday and no issues so far. I work in a bike shop so I see everything under the sun. The Advent feels real soild and the clutch is real firm. I'm liking it so far but I think the finger trigger needs to be a little longer.
Box components ran into issues w cast metal parts on their first gen rear mech, they had to go w forged, cast metal is too brittle for this application
Hmm interesting. I haven't had much experience with Box to know about the issue. Time will tell, but I have high hopes since Microshift is a long time player in components, including MTB.
my friend what hub do you use for this that would sound good someone plz respond i need help with a good sound hub with centrelock for a 9/10 speed cassette
May be a silly question but do you know if it fits on an older style 9/10 speed hub or do you need a modern 11 speed hub, I'm asking as it's their latest offering and the shifter is specific to the derailleur and not shimano compatible.
the cassette is standard 9-speed width, so fits on 8/9/10-speed Shimano-compatible freehubs. You'd use a spacer to take up that extra width if mounting the Advent cassette on an 11-speed freehub body.
@@timcupery2244 thanks for the reply, I've actually just bought a 10 speed Shimano XT derailleur and changer as the price was amazing, less than the advent in the UK, oh and goes up to 46 rear cassette which I'm going for.
@@Jamesthebikeguy Thanks James! I would some doubts about 32T -- 11-42 1x setup: 32T -- 11 Is it possible to reach 10-15 miles/hour speed in flat area? (I am OK with 15miles/hour top speed) 32T -- 42: Can I climb 20% gradient? Is it much harder than using like 2x system with 22 - 32?
I just measured on the bike, which is a bit difficult, but it seems the 8s and 10s cassettes are the same depth. 38mm, or around 1.5". Does that sound about right?
Will this cassette work with Shimano sora shifter and Shimano Sora rear derailleur (with derailleur frame tab extension to reach higher gear)? Want larger range of gear as the highest at back is 34t.
No. Different cable pull. What you can do tho is to use a 9 speed shimano mtb derailleur with 9 or 10 speed brifters with up to 11-36 9/10 spd cassette
@@richarde1355 I found out the hard way last night about the cable pull. I tried installing this mech with a shimano 9 speed shifter, and it would not shift into all gears. I could either get it to shift in the 6-7 smallest gears or the second biggest and not into the smallest. Whatever I did I couldn't get it to shift into the biggest cog even though the derailleur could be pressed by hand to shift to the largest cog (the mech has plenty of swing). After struggling for an hour I decided to look at their website and it states that you have to use their shifter due to design changes they made to get this system to shift nicely on large cassettes. Basically I think their cable pull length per shifter click is considerably m more than a typical shimano or sram. I've installed and tuned many rear Mechs and this was a new issue for me to say the least. The mech looks great BTW.... Not to happy with how that shifter looks though and I now am forced to buy it.
I can't see how their 11 speed derailleur can weight claimed 331g. But I found the price on polish version of multinational store called bikester, soo maybe they weight it?
4:55 This is actually a reason why our bicycle multitools could be much smaller. Phillips and Torx bolts have no place on a bicycle. This is just unnecessary, we could loose two keys/tools from multitool (three cause WTH flat head screw driver!?!). Older shimano was actually the worst, their bolts were JIS=Japan industry standard and they really were awkward with Phillips (PH) and Pozidriv (PZ) screw drivers. Also shallow head torx bolts made of rust prone steel are the first bolts you gonna strip on your bicycle, so why, why.....WHY!!!! I always replace them with SS deep head hex bolts. 0 issues. FO EVAR! ;-)
Did you know your missing a pin that's supposed the be holding the rear cogs together. There's three in a triangle in the cassette. You only have two. Not think it'll hurt but just so ya know
To chew on: right now, you can pick up a last gen (M7000) SLX cassette, shifter, and mech for about 140 USD. Same range, closer steps, great shifting, and 104g lighter for the same cassette range (you could grab an 11-40 or 11-46 instead). Chains will cost a bit more than 9s, but overall, Microshift still isn't really making its case on the value right now. Talking about SLX reminds me, how's the noise? SLX has a really clangy sound in the big cog.
The philips screws are to hold the clutch component plate on. The Advent derailleur uses a prawl system compared to Shimano and Sram that use a friction plate system. Which means you can tune this to be harder to jump around, or loosen it to be more responsive.
This seems fine and all, but honestly if you need to climb a lot with your bike, you'd need a very small chainring to match the ratios of a 32T chainring paired with an 11-50T cassette and I'm not sure how would it hold with a bigger cassette from another brand. If climbing is a concern, I'd definitively save the $100 difference to get a 1x9 or 1x11 from Box Components with proper modern range or a 1x12 Eagle SX from SRAM.
I'm not sure there is a bigger cassette option available as this is 9spd. THe point here is clutch, wide range and low cost. The low cost is not just initially but over the life of the bike as the 9spd will be a touch more durable and lower cost than say a 12spd. For most people the gear range is perfectly adequate. In fact there was years that this range was the standard issue.
SRAM SX works great? Uh yeah, that's a pretty big stretch. SRAM has been warrantying the deraileurs because the return spring is so weak and everything is plastic

TBH I haven't ran mine at all since I was just installing it last night.
Would be nice with a follow up after a year and see how they survive a rain, mud and a ice cold winter.
I know a ton of people with quite a few miles on this that are happy.
So...on the front gear set with the pedals, you usually have a guard keep your pants leg ext from getting caught. The guards I see are usually plastic. Mine has broken off. What is that guard called to look for a replacement online?
In most cases those plastic guards are not sold separately. Time for a rubber band around your pants, or a new crank.
tuck your pants into your socks or get an aluminum crank mounted bash guard
Awesome video! I am upgrading a bike and just bought a new rear wheel with a freehub so I can run something like this! I am looking at the XLE 10 or 11 speed, should be about the same setup, just less jump between gears!
Sweet upgrade 👍
Can I use the microShift Derailleur with a standard Shimano Cassette and a 3 Shift in the front , so 3x9 gears
Did the black coating on the cassette come out?
Does wear slightly
What is the pull ratio of that drivetrain? How much cable gets pulled at each gear change or how many millimeters does the derailleur move laterally for each millimeter of cable moved?
That's a good question, it is not spec'd nor did I measure. Something I'll look into finding out.
I'll let you know that shimano 9 speed shifter definitely did not work with this derailleur due to incompatible cable pull length. I believe shimano is less pull than the microshift
review about advent x pls,, Planning to buy one
can you use both microshift advent shifter and derraileur with a shimano 9 speed cassette?
Yes
My son has a 2020 Trek Precaliber 24 inch 3x7...will this group set work for his bike? Thanks
It should
Also they have a 11-46 cassette but i can't find it anywhere for sale.
Shitloads on eBay
Is this the large cog cassette?
Yeah. They did just recently drop a 1x10 that is even wider
Can I use that derailleur with a 9 speed sram shifter?
no. the pull ratio is different. might be useful for someone, 3 months later.
@@endianAphones thank you.
Does their cassette fit stock on a Shimano Center Lock, disc, 135x9mm QR, 32h rear hub? or is a new hub/freehub body required?
I believe MicroSHIFT offers a cassette that fits Shimano free hub. Check out their site.
Hello
microshift advent vs shimano acera?
Advent is much nicer.
@@Jamesthebikeguy Thanks James!
I would some doubts about 32T -- 11-42 1x setup:
32T -- 11
Is it possible to reach 10-15 miles/hour speed in flat area? (I am OK with 15miles/hour top speed)
32T -- 42:
Can I climb 20% gradient? Is it much harder than using like 2x system with 22 - 32?
Do you think that will fit on my old 8 speed? I have a shimano cassette. What chain do you use? I have never installed a 9 speed.
Only if you're a free hub body is compatible with nine speed
@@Jamesthebikeguy thats the question. next time i have my wheel of i could try putting on a 10 speed cassette i have onto it. Same total width right?
I just measured on the bike, which is a bit difficult, but it seems the 8s and 10s cassettes are the same depth. 38mm, or around 1.5". Does that sound about right?
Will this cassette work with Shimano sora shifter and Shimano Sora rear derailleur (with derailleur frame tab extension to reach higher gear)?
Want larger range of gear as the highest at back is 34t.
No. Different cable pull. What you can do tho is to use a 9 speed shimano mtb derailleur with 9 or 10 speed brifters with up to 11-36 9/10 spd cassette
@@laurynasjagelo5075 I'm already running a medium size deraileur (MTB) with 11-34 cassette. With Shimano 9 speed Sora shifter.
@@laurynasjagelo5075 I'm already running a medium size deraileur (MTB) with 11-34 cassette. With Shimano 9 speed Sora shifter.
@@laurynasjagelo5075 why is cable pull an issue? I would think that it is more the derailleur doesn’t fit the gearing range without an extender.
Basically I think their cable pull length per shifter click is considerably m more than a typical
shimano or sram.
I've installed and tuned many rear Mechs and this was a new issue for me to say the least. The mech looks great BTW.... Not to happy with how that shifter looks though and I now am forced to buy it.
This derailleur is compatible with shimano acera 9speed shifter?
So is it better to ride with the clutch in or off?
Clutch on
I can't see how their 11 speed derailleur can weight claimed 331g. But I found the price on polish version of multinational store called bikester, soo maybe they weight it?
385g is what my scale says
0 issues. FO EVAR! ;-)
Suppose I am just a fan of T25. They are reliable and have been very useful for me in the past.
What chain should I use with that group set?
Any 9 speed chain would work.
I prefer KMC Chain to SRAM or Shimano - chain is all they make - quality is very high.
Read their reviews...
Mine with 650km has lot of play. It didn´t last anything and has to be serviced. Not very happy.
Is compatible with shimano 9 speed shifter?
No it is not.
Did you know your missing a pin that's supposed the be holding the rear cogs together. There's three in a triangle in the cassette. You only have two. Not think it'll hurt but just so ya know
Not a missing pin. That is an alignment hole used during assembly they are all like that.
What size axel dose it fit on
Axle size is not a factor on compatibility with this.
Will this fit my al comp 2020?
Sure just make sure you get all the supporting components
advent or nx 11 speed?
Nx
Heyy!! Can anyone plzz tell me if microshift SL759 shifter is compatible with shimano derailleur??
To chew on: right now, you can pick up a last gen (M7000) SLX cassette, shifter, and mech for about 140 USD. Same range, closer steps, great shifting, and 104g lighter for the same cassette range (you could grab an 11-40 or 11-46 instead). Chains will cost a bit more than 9s, but overall, Microshift still isn't really making its case on the value right now.
Talking about SLX reminds me, how's the noise? SLX has a really clangy sound in the big cog.
SLX is an option, but that price you're describing is a total aberration.
@@Jamesthebikeguy True. Probably didn't make that clear enough.
But I can't see what gears I'm at ?
No need.
Got it on my marin san Quentin

What are your thoughts on the MicroSHIFT?

👍
Can you change out the Phillips screws on the derailleur for allen head screws??
Yes, you can. I just wish it came that way from the start. Not a big deal, just stop by the hardware store I am sure.
Does the derailleur mesh with shimano 9 speed shifters?
I don't believe so.
No the Shifter & Derailleur are matched. You could use this 9 speed MicroShift Cassette with any other 9 speed chain or shifters however.
I am.....
definetly cant compare to deore slx xt xtr maybe is in class like shimano acera altus alivio
1044 g for all 3
It is not cheap. It is just not ridiculously expensive like those japanese monopolists.
It’s SRAM not shram. There is no H in the name SRAM.
Dad?
SRAM SX works great? Uh yeah, that's a pretty big stretch. SRAM has been warrantying the deraileurs because the return spring is so weak and everything is plastic
SX does work well. It's setup that is crucial
