TODAY’s Hoda Kotb sat down the singer and fashion designer for an emotional conversation. “I just realized that I had to surrender,” Simpson says of her sobriety.

This woman is opening up ON NATIONAL TELEVISION about her trauma, abuse, past & every hard moment she’s had...including public humiliation & feeling like a terrible mother. Could you imagine how hard this is for her?? I’m sure she’s on medication for her anxiety & other mental illness she’d been running from..maybe the trauma. She probably sees a therapist & takes medication just like millions of other humans do. She’s also had facial surgery, injections and Botox, and could have lasting damage from her drug/alcohol use...leave her alone and let her speak her truth.

Rachel Nicole exactly all of these people on here act like it’s a bad thing that she’s being honest. Yes she is slurring a little but that’s ok because this human being is struggling and being real about it openly with everyone. We have to respect her for that. Who cares if she’s having a hard time because we aren’t perfect either. I like her a lot more after this interview. Love his bluntness. Too many people hold stuff back in life I just don’t know why people are so afraid to let their feelings out and be honest!

Refreshing to hear that her husband stuck with her through the weakness of alcoholism and the tough work of getting sober. Rare, especially in such public people. Gorgeous children, she's extremely fortunate they're all okay. Hoda's such a lovely, kind interviewer, isn't she?
I can't believe all the negative comments here. People are so cruel.
Noting that she appears to be on medication or not clean is not 'being cruel'. It is making critical observations and saying them out loud. If someone doesn't say anything then she is going to walk away thinking that her presence and the way she showed up is normal. It's not. She is on something and it is not a negative comment to say so. She needs help......it is kinder to say that then nothing at all and stand by and watch her do a Whitney or a Prince or a Tom Petty. Need more examples of saying nothing and doing nothing about a problem?
people who are being honest are not being cruel- just honest. You are mixing p cruelty, which is not evidenced in any of the comments, with being honest.
The same people will beg for grace when hardships hit them. Some humans are trash. None one lives her life and truly understands what she’s experienced. I wish Jessica and her family the best. Life can be hard sometimes and we all need some grace. I was and always will be a fan of this talented and beautiful soul.

I think her own parents pushed to do many things she didnt want.....too much pressure...btw i heard about jessica and a lesbian relationship when she was younger..maybe her parents pushed her to have "normal " life because they wanted her career grow .

yea. she def has brain disease from alcohol abuse (used to be called 'water on the brain'). little bit of brain damage from the pill abuse is there. could be worse. but she said shes not a liar and exposed countless dozens of her own lies in her book so i guess its left to interpretation.

Norm N I feel it means that fear keeps you from doing something. It’s like a brick wall. Once you push past that fear, you gain so much more. Many people have a fears that cripple their growth. Will was saying if you push past the fear that’s holding you back, you will be rewarded with a much more fulfilling life.

@@mgal6234 Exactly! I have heard recovered stars say this very thing. Accountability is PARAMOUNT in getting and staying clean. Being surrounded by, "Yes" people makes sobriety MUCH more challenging. She's always seemed so genuine so I'm hoping she gets through. Right now I'm just not seeing that spark in her eyes as before. Ya know? Active Addiction turns that light out.
As a recovering addict I know that even when you're "better" it doesn't always mean you're completely sober...just means you're saying it out loud now. I can see she still has a ways to go. Keep it up, Jess.

I believe she’s sober. I’ve been sober for three years now and was accused constantly of being high bc of health problems and the way I speak (which is drawn out, southern, and a bit languid) and let me tell you that’s something that can drive someone straight into a relapse, addicts are usually sensitive and if she’s doing okay then she’s fine and its nobodies business. Being “sober” isn’t the same for everyone. I shot heroin for 6 years off and on and m now on suboxone, and my anxiety meds bc I couldn’t even go out in public without something to treat my anxiety. It may be bc my brain is irreversibly “damaged” from my use but also I had anxiety since I was a teenager. Idk but I’m a functioning member of society and Im not sticking a needle in my arm anymore. I don’t abuse my medication and my dr has proof of that. I’ve been called “high” so many times when someone got mad at me tho 🙄🙄😩 and it was especially repugnant from another addict.
Sometimes harm reduction is more of a realistic goal than sobriety
Jessica is sharing her private personal life with the world. I wouldn't doubt that shes trying to hold her tears back because this is major stuff shes talking about. She's only human like us. It takes a very brave person to admit to having an alcohol problem & actually doing something about it. Through all this... she is still financially successful. I admire her for fighting through everything. Thank goodness for her faith! Stay strong Jessica & be positive no matter what negativity comes your way!!

she's coming out and talking about her struggles and trying to get her life back together and set an example for her kids so she don't embarrassed them as they get older and hear the media talking about her from her struggles with addiction

I’ve been following her for 20 years now. Huge fan and her finally being honest about the demons that had haunted her all these years is a way of her letting go. She always seemed happy but seeing she struggled like all of us makes makes me realize when I’m struggling I’m not alone. I don’t drink or anything but I bottle up a lot of things. Her book was amazing and so glad she’s showing the world her truth. Now, she needs to channel that into more music.
Anyone noticed how her whole body language changed when she heard Nick's name for the first time.

I honestly don’t think she’s on anything.... maybe an anti depressant or something. I think it’s a lot of Botox or plastic surgery. She’s still beautiful, I think she always has been naturally beautiful. I think it’s sad that she doesn’t necessarily see it and feels that she needs surgical enhancements.
Javi Ruiz some do. Wellbutrin is one. It acts as a stimulater, which can cause your mind to think faster than your able to speak. Which can then make you sound like this. Not saying she’s on this med, but just an example of what antidepressant can cause you to sound off.
Javi Ruiz yes, that’s exactly how they make you feel. they stop the depression, but also screw with your mood. she’s on something for sure! but hopefully it’s something that’s helping her and that she’s not self medicating.

I thought she was and assumed it was the meds , I get like that when they increase my dose or before when they changed them , Botox don’t make you slur your words or gurn and some antidepressants do make you drowsy but why would she do that after the Ellen show , has she got no one looking out for her !

I was on a high dose of celexa and sounded just like this, slurring and just like I was "on" something. It definitely could be medication she was prescribed.

That's a good way to put it. I was helping a friend get off drugs by checking on her at her place in detox a couple weeks ago, when I got to her house she had taken a bunch on benzos to basically cut the edge off I guess.. she spoke exactly how Jessica did in this interview& it was so scary.
She doesn't sound sober here at all, sounds like she's ingested something that makes her slower. Very sad to see. Sexual abuse affects its victims gravely.
From a medical perspective... this can be the result of long term drug and alcohol use. Similar to Ozzy Osbourne. He slurs as well but obviously, she's not as bad nor was she doing hard drugs like that. It seems like these are the side effects of 20yrs of abuse.

I'm glad she's sharing her story. Not only is it therapeutic for her to be honest and not have to hide it, but it helps society to stop stigmatizing addiction. She went through horrible abuse and was using drugs to try and numb her pain. Lots of people do this and shouldn't be shamed for it. She just needed help.

My step brother is an addict. He has recovered for over 3 years now. When he first went into recovery he was on a heavy medication for his depression. He sounded just like her. He was a heavy drinker and meth abuser. She probably is on a high level of medication prescribed by a doctor. It happens and is completely normal. Over time she will probably slowly lighten the med and will not sound so stoned.

She has tremendous bravery and strength for sharing her life experiences. I think we get to a point in life where we stop running from our pasts. She did seem a little slurrish in this clip though.

Until she came out for being an alcoholic, no one even knew or suspected it from her, so to hear everyone judging her now that she was brave enough to share her struggles, hurts my heart. We should be speaking positive & uplifting her if we say anything at all. 🙏🏻❤️

When you've been drinking for so long, It's going to naturally take time to bounce back emotionally and Physically. For some people it may take a year or more. Your body is basically in shock, And it's Adjusting and learning to cope without the alcohol. I'm very proud of her! I'm glad she was able to Recover. God bless her. Keep it up Jessica! I'll celebrate with you 🙂
she may also have been on the wagon when writing the book then off since- we cnat really know but she is not sober and hopefully will get some help for whatever is going on here
@@hannahrose9182 She might be "Starting" a antidepressant. Some people need medication after stopping alcohol, to get their brain functioning correctly. The thing is alcohol and or drugs can alot of times cause mental illness, and in most cases it takes medication to fix the problem. Rumor also has it that she has had nose and thyroid surgery.

She looks like she’s slurring cause she can’t move most of her face. Probably Botox or fillers getting in the way. Her eyes are very aware and all of her answers are straight forward, most of the comments are annoying making assumptions.
Exactly! When you can't move your face that's what happens. It's not drugs -- it's facial fillers and botox. They should be outlawed! She's a beautiful beautiful women and doesn't need them! She would look so much better without them.

I adore her and wish her well but I noticed too. No disrespect to stroke victims but her slowed down speech reminds me of someone who’s had speech therapy after a stroke. Its almost like I can see her reciting her words in her head before she says them. I know long term use of excessive alcohol does a real number on the brain and cognitive issues so maybe her drinking was way worse and it’s taking her much longer to heal. In any event it’s none of my bee’s wax so I am glad she’s doing well. I bet her book is a #1 best seller, I think I’m gonna get it.
@@ZobethC I am a brainstem stroke survivor and yes that is how she is talking. I believe she is bipolar? so perhaps it is the medications she is on.
