It has been a truly awful time recently watching all the nests. Some days I dread looking, however it's nature and in a way it has taught me to appreciate every bird more as they can be gone in an instant. Nature is harsh and fleeting but also beautiful. The utter triumph of M15 and his eaglets has been one of the most remarkable things I've ever had the privilege to watch. The Tom thing, although awful is actually very interesting. You always assume they know exactly what to do and just get on with it but I suspect what happened with Tom, also happens quite regularly to new parents but we just don't get to see it. It genuinely is fascinating, hopefully he's a very quick learner! Thank you for all you do, it's appreciated ❤
Thank you so much for this update Connor. It has been a tough season all round, hopefully better for the Osprey and Eagles next year and hopefully things continue to progress nicely with Angel and Tom.
What a great synopsis, Connor! Thank you for explaining your background, for thanking the people that make this all possible, and for explaining what is happening and teaching us. I truly believe, through these live streams, that these birds are going to help change the world! Murphy (eagle) is another great story. While it's been a tough season, there have been profound moments as well (M15, as others have mentioned).
Oh Tom, well he's trying. He was very interested this morning when he brought in the small rodent. It almost looked like he wanted to try and feed it. It was too cute to see that kitty in the background ❤
Thanks Connor.... I only just found your channel, and it's so reassuring and clarifying to have a knowledgeable, as well as compassionate, voice of reason in the midst of all the wonder and madness! Along the same lines as Captiva was the Redding Eagles nest and Big Bear... both pairs are seasoned parents, and yet something inexplicable seemed to intervene in their consistency with brooding, leading to unviable eggs. With the 2nd Redding egg, we do know that Guardian was distracted by a persistent intruder, but the first egg being left unattended was a mystery. As was the Big Bear clutch, especially with all the frigid weather ❄❄❄ But the good news is that Jackie & Shadow, as well as Liberty & Guardian are thriving, and they get to have a year of ease and adventure until next nesting season! Blessings to ALL these precious birds that we love so much! ❤🦅❤
It has been a hard year so far, as I watch all the nests you talked about and more. M15 had it rough but he did a fantastic job with any interference from others. And now it seems he has taught the eaglets about intruders first hand. And Harriet's gone, Sampson, and Dale Hollow the dad missing. Just a tough season
Great video, Connor. It helps so much that you are sharing all of this with us. It has been a rough, rough season everywhere Hoping for good things with Angel, Tom and the chick. I would love to see you get involved with the DHEC cam. They need some good, experienced people behind the scenes there. You would be great on the cams, and you have great mods, as you say. Just a thought.
This was my first year watching bird cams and I chose SW Florida and Big Bear (eggs never hatched).... Then I started watching Angel... 😰 I've learned a lot but it surely is nerve-racking. It's interesting watching Tom learn. Thank you for these updates 🥰
I started reading your comment, and I was like, wait, I didn't post on here, lol. Same story here. Although, I did find an owl cam at the same time as the rest.
You may want to do some research on your own if really interested as these guys are not always accurate and don't admit it. I watch Enoch Wildlife Rescue and Robert Fuller's channels to learn about raptors and birds.
Same...cried for weeks watching shadow coming back to the nest than found the Harriet nest 😔 more sadness and this nest also triplets in Cali falcons Annie and Lou!!! And of course the Minnesota eagles. Love these bird's!! Oh and another nest in Miami baby has fallen out twice 😂
Thanks for saying it's been a rough season. I started last year watching SF Ospreys, and this year eagles nests in both CA and FL, now you guys, and it has been BRUTAL. I was starting to think this nest-watching stuff was for the birds.
Thanks for your up date,I think your right on him being a new Dad. I watch a eagle nest with new Dad. He was great during incubation,. After hatch he didn't know what this living wiggly thing was in his nest. Didn't know how to react. ❤
Thanks for all the information Conner, I`m now up to date on whats happening in each nest. I was`nt aware of Captiva Ospreys leaving their nest, what a shame. Maybe they will try again.
Thanks again Connor for the updates. It is hard for us to not put human emotions on these birds, but I do think they have some emotions. When Angel came back to the 1st chick after Tom killed it, I swear she was feeling a sense of mourning & loss, although I know it's short-lived. Yes, thank God she came back before Tom could've done in the 2nd chick. I don't trust him yet, too. He is smart & will learn & he will be a great dad. Are the owners going to name the chick?
Thanks so much for the update. It has certainly been a year to remember, although maybe not in the way we would have hoped! Thank you to everyone who has made it happen. The moderators have been exceptional. ❤
Thank you for the update, I thought there were 2 eggs. I'm so glad Angel is a good Mom and pray Tom learns a thing or two from her. Learning more everyday *smiles*
Thanks for all the updates. I had been following all those nests and wondered why so much drama. In past years I hadn't seen all that drama. Not knowing why, I was blaming Ian for the Florida drama somehow stressing all the birds so much that they were more feisty. Fighting and killing. Seemed so many eagles around SWFL and NEFL nests and fights ensued with injury. So glad M15 made it to his 2 eaglets fledgling without serious injury. That was a drama with a successful ending.
I just found that channel a few days / weeks ago, and i like to learn new things about the beautiful Birds from the different cams, also if nature can be rough i am glad there are good peoples outside there who cares about the birds of prey and try to take care of them when they are hurt or something else.
Thanks for the video updates. I don't generally look at the chat since the vibe is usually pretty off in there. So if there are updates there, I usually miss them. These are much appreciated. Hoping for good luck in the future with these guys.
Thank you soooo much Connor for this video explaining & answering the questions from the 26 comments so far. Everybody has already said pretty much the same things that I would say or ask. I am glad that you think the same as I do about Tom. That he didn't know he was hurting his own chick, that he wasn't just mean, but that he is young & didn't realize that it wasn't prey or a threat to his eggs. That it was an accidental killing & you feel he will be a good dad & deserves the second chance. I will continue to look for contact info. I am here because a Leucistic Red-Tailed Hawk is missing. I have been watching this beauty every winter since 2019. Each Holiday season it would show up in the same tree, but not this year. Construction is starting this year 2024. 900 houses will be built in the area it hunts. So I was going to try to get some pictures this winter. I am a nobody in the world of wildlife study, but this was the highlight of my winter [ Late Fall into the new year]. Thanks for work here, Jeff Southeast, TN
It’s definitely been a rough season. The Tom and Angel story has really been hard for me to watch, just hoping and praying the second chick hangs in there. Does anyone here watch the Earth Cams? The osprey nest in Moorseville, NC was decimated a few days ago and no one seems to know why. It’s on a man made platform over the river which the ospreys has added lots of material and had even laid their first egg. Within a few days everything was gone, stripped back down to the metal platform. The pair kept trying to build it back up, but to no avail. I was just wondering if it was too much wind or something else. I’ve never seen that happen with any nest, ever. Well, except for hurricanes, but that was definitely not the case here.
The Barn Owl Nests have been a bad season this year too. Aleast 1 Israel nest had a grown mother Owl die in front of it's fledging owlets, and I thikn there is a missing Owl parent in a Florida one too. Is there a reason why 2023 in different places have so much bad luck? Been watching since 2021 and 2023 just seems like a bad season (Samson was the first live bird nest I watched, so it's sad that one is gone along with Harriet, glad the eagles still fledged). Glad to see one owlet is still there for Angel and Tom.
