Have you ever needed to swap a freehub body over? When did you last service your bike hub?
I once had the pawls on a freehub become permanently engaged during a race. It was quite interesting to have a fixed gear for about 50miles
The FH body on my XC started to get some play last autumn, I had to disassemble it to adjust the play. I noticed this when I wanted to service the hubs, I also noticed back then my QR front axle had a broken axle shaft
Every bike I’ve ever owned came with HG and it just works. SRAM was kind enough to make a 12 speed Eagle cassette for HG, so I can run X01 without having to replace the driver.
I serviced my Mavic freehub body about a month ago with the suggested mineral oil but the Shimano freehub uses the widest spline in conjunction with the cassette for installation.Safe riding.💯👌🏻✌🏻🚴♀️
Im so relieved that the industry is adopting multiple standards. For years we had too much compatibility!😐
Great video!! Thanks for sharing; I do remember some of those pawls "springing " around the shop LOL!
DT Swiss ratchet hubs are worth their price purely because they don't have the pawls and tiny springs. The ratchet is an excellent system that's super simple to take apart, service and reassemble. Incredibly robust, too.
I'll take a lower end DT over any pawl hubs, more time riding less time fixing 🎉
Now there are multiple ring drive hubs out there to try besides DT tho. I’m on ERASE MTB hubs and i love them. Titanium free hub body on the rear 7075 AL hubshell and stainless steel ratchets.
Best part is front and rear hub costs less together than one DT 240 or other high end hub. Even with me importing them from Belgium to the US!
I agree very eay to swap out components
@@FOTB407 still Erase Hub cant beat DT 350's reliability
I have 2 wheelsets both with DT Swiss Ratchet system 😎🔝 (240 and 180 hubs)
Really nice explanation for the different types of hub body's. I like that you kept it simple and provided a few really useful trick of the trade.
Nice job Owen 👍
Yeah. I’ll be going to the bike shop if I ever need to do any of this. I’ll happily pay for it.
Nice explainer.
HG always a champion to me
Lots of bargain 10 speed and 11 speed parts available for HG driver.
Simply legendary
OMG I have those same DT Swiss wheels 😍🔥🔝
I service my hubs once or twice a year and I have tried specific grease and oil but i prefer to use just regular dry lube because it doesn't gunk up as much and I don't notice any performance loss ether.
Any chance you will be doing a headset maintenance and headset type video in the future?✌🏻💯
Some corrections: Shimano introduced the Hyperglide freehub in 1989 on the Dura-Ace road group. Previous Shimano freehubs were Uniglide, where the small cog threaded onto the FHB. For awhile in the early 90s, FHBs were designed to accept both UG and HG cassettes. Hyperglide FHBs have been different lengths over the years, depending on how many speeds and which type of cassette you're using.
So, i don't know what you mean about HG being around since the 1970s lol
You can buy freehub grease but if you want a cheap solution or don't want to buy another product, you can add the smallest amount of your normal grease on the ratchets and a few drops of wet lube on to the pawls. When it mixes it will end up with a viscosity somewhere in the middle and it will keep the springs running freely. I have also done this trick with bottom bracket bearings for even less friction for a race situation, but it does mean service intervals are more frequent.
👌great tuitional vid, could i put slick honey on the ratchet ring, spring, pawls please?
Sure. I have with my Stans hubs and DT Swiss ratchets, no problem. It makes them quieter too. So for some people that's a negative 😂.
@@newttella1043 👍thanks, prefer it to be quiet anyway, havent tried slick honey on the pawls, incase the pawls jam up and smash my freehub🤔
Hi great video. Curios if Mavic ID360 HD hubs are different than the ones you showed. Also is there any real benefit in moving to Microspline since the new 12 speed Shimano cassettes are backward compatible to HD on my existing wheels that previously ran 11 speed cassettes?
Can i remove freehub body from not spoked freehub ? Can i just put cassete and use chain whip + 10mm hex ? Or I must hold freehub itself ?
So which freehub does a belt drive train have?
On the first wheel you pulled the freehub body off you removed it with clearly all 6 pawls still on but they said you’d lost some in the hub then pulled some out? What was that about?
if u put grease in the hubs it will get more qiet, but with oil it will get louder, if thats true, can i put some oil on the hubs without damaging them?
Do all the sram xd hubs come out by pulling an end cap off as I just brought a wheel but need to swap the xd for a hyperglide and can’t get an end cap off
They’re frequently impossible to remove by hand. Get a tool like a “Hub Genie” to pull them without damage.
Got a new hub HG 12 speed
im never going to use the bag technique, but I am going to scream why didn't I use the bag technique as the spring shoots across the room!!! Fun fact Stan's Neo hubs use a different inner spacer between their aluminum and steel freehub bodies, and when you use the wrong one, either way, the freehub locks solid. Especially good to know when you setup a new cassette and freehub at your house, then take it to your girlfriends house for a ride and don't bring the spacer for the aluminum one or your cassette tool.😢🤦♂️
Recently I had my I9 Hydra XD paws wear out after only approximately 100 miles. Given it’s an e-bike, was wondering if anyone else has had this issue with the I9 Hydra paws? I ordered another set of paws, but really have a problem with such a short term with the paws from I9. I have them on my other rig which is a I9 Torch setup, but never have had any issues there, or with DT SWISS. Wondering if this is normal wear and something to be aware of? Should I keep a spare set handy. 🤔
Pawl and bearing life on the hydra is known to be terrible.
While pulling off the 1st freehub you said you “we lost a few pawls inside”. All 6 pawls were literally still on the freehub body😆
🙋♂️ Hands up if you remember Shimano UniGlide 🙋♂️
Yeah, and the last cog is threaded on,I never used but I'm sure it worked like a charm.
You forgot about ltwoo 13 speed.
So you're telling me that the only thing holding that huge cassette WITH the freehub body is that small end cap thingy? With nothing screwed?
Well.. it’s going to be clamped in the frame
@@AnotherMrLizard Until you decide to change the tire and the wheel falls from your hand and there goes the pawls. I've always hated that design where the end caps are not screwd to the hub.
@@loolyou what are you on about? Hope, dt Swiss, Chris king, halo, i9, raceface etc are all like this and they all take a little effort to remove the endcaps. You’ve always hated the design but your first comment makes it seem you’ve only just discovered it..
No grease ...really?
People deliberately remove all grease to get their hubs as loud as possible. It won't affect function at all but maybe slightly lessen the hub's life span, especially with lightweight aluminum bodies like Stans hubs, though they may have changed their design in the last few years.
I can now pedal backwards 😂
Anyone else see Jackson goldstones crash
You mean while the announcer is saying “he’s so accurate with his wheel placements”, then tragedy. I mean it was a total jinx… 😂 I hope he’s ok, he was up and coherent.
Shimano free hubs suck balls. The splines get chewed up over time from the immense torque. XD is the way to go! Shimano cassettes are multi pieces and hassle to install, whereas most SRAM cassettes are one piece.
Thankfully I have DT Swiss freehubs 😅😂
@@fra93ilgrande Made of steel? Then good.
You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, the freehub body's are made from Cr-mo steel and are pretty hard, maybe they get chewed up in a your dreams.Safe riding.
