Interesting, I was driving 65 in a 60 speed limit highway (I'm a new driver). I was on the left lane, and this guy tailgating behind me switched lanes to go side to side with me and started honking his horn and giving me the middle finger.

The problem is competitiveness. People seem to think they're in a race and don't like people getting in front of them even though their overall time to destination remains the same.

However, here I think it's an accurate time to use the term. It's not everyone behaving this way, but narcissists would characteristically take issue with being passed.
As a roadtripper i cant agree more. Another dangerous thing people tend to do is start turning or come to a complete stop before using their turn signal. They completely defeat the purpose of the signal.

If you wanted to drive slower than the posted speed limit, then yes I agree with you as by the law, you would be considered a moving hazard and a violation. Other than that, the posted speed limit is good and legal in any lane. You have to remember this is not about what you feel or think it should be. The law stated that you are supposed to drive at the speed limit and if you are slower, you must move over to the right lane as that is the designated lane for that. Now are there actual laws on the books for not driving in the left lane except for passing, yes. But I'm speaking from an actual in practice application in that you will not be cited for not moving over from the left lane if you are doing the speed limit. Believe me, when we would see vehicles moving in and out of lanes that are traveling faster than the speed limit, those were the drivers we would go after and ticket as they were speeding and reckless!

One way I think we screwed this up is we refer to the left lane as "the fast lane" when it's actually the passing lane. It doesn't matter how fast you're going, move over to the right if the lane is available. But instead, anyone who thinks they are going "fast" will stay in the "fast lane" forever
I find that pretty impractical. Yeah it's fine to use it as a passing lane only if there's only a few cars on the road, but when there's a good number of cars on the road, you're better off minimizing the number of lane changes. Constantly swapping between left lane and center lane isn't a great idea, especially on a 3+ lane highway as it increases the chance of running into the dangerous situation where left lane and right lane both try to enter middle lane at the same time.
Also quite honestly if you pass one person in the middle lane, chances are you'll want to pass the next person too, because they're probably all going slower than you are. So it makes more sense to stay in the left lane unless you see someone going super fast behind you.
@@taragnor Unfortunately, many people like you create a far worse situation than changing lanes frequently. You simply don't notice cars coming up behind you or can't be bothered to change lanes in a timely fashion. It is far less dangerous to go ahead and already be prepared that someone will be passing you and be in the middle lane.
Obviously, there is some judgement required. If you are only going to move back to the middle lane for a few seconds, then sure... stay in the left lane until you clear that pack. But to justify staying in the left lane indefinitely is lazy and dangerous.
And pay attention to the right lane if merging into the middle lane. It is a universal rule that you should do whatever you can to avoid being in someone's blindspot. So don't pull into the middle lane if you are also pulling in to the blindspot of a car in the right lane.
@@scottkinnebrew7924 The thing is you never "clear them all". The middle lane always has more cars in it. It's not like you clear 3 cars and get open road, which is why I said earlier it may work on a sparsely populated road with near-zero traffic, but not on major highways near cities. In the areas I drive in, there's another car, and another after that, etc. It never ends. It's not like you pass 3 cars and then the middle lane is just wide clear sailing. If I drove how you suggest, I'd be making 50+ lane changes in a 15 minute drive on the highway and look like a crazy person, constantly bouncing back and forth between lanes.
You basically either have two choices, you either have to settle down to middle lane speeds, or if you want to go faster, you stay in the left lane. And if you run into someone behind you that wants to go faster than left lane speeds, you dip into the middle lane when you can to let him pass. It's far more sane and sensible than trying to lane change every single time you want to pass a car. Then I'm making only a few lane changes compared to constantly bouncing around and making a giant hazard on the road.

@@taragnor I live in South Florida. Unsurprisingly, your assumptions are wrong and you are ignoring the "judgement is required" part of my response. Of course you never "clear them all", regardless of how much traffic there is. Here is the bottom line... based on your unwillingness to acknowledge how keeping the left lane clear when possible is safer and more courteous to the drivers you share the road with, I think it's pretty safe to say you need to make more of an effort to get out of the left lane. You are, indeed, making a greater hazard by blocking the traffic behind you. Blocking the left lane is creating a greater hazard than is doing proper lane changes. Even if you are changing lanes a couple of times per mile. This isn't about your personal comfort or appearance.
Having said all of that though... at least you move right to let people pass. That is a vast improvement over most drivers. So thank you for that.
@@scottkinnebrew7924 I suppose I see it as a greater hazard if you take everyone in the left lane pack them into the middle and right lanes instead. That leads to more cars closer together and thus a much smaller window if you have to brake. Spreading out the traffic over more lanes gives everyone more space in front of and behind them. Using the left lane as a fast lane is what everyone does where I drive, and just seems to make the most sense to me. It's really only an issue if someone goes slow in the left lane. Otherwise what's the worst case scenario, the guy who wants to drive ultra fast has to slow down to the speed of the fast lane? Honestly doesn't seem like that big a deal to me.
I'm in California and I got my driver's license pretty recently (like a year or so ago), and I can confidently say that nowhere on the driving course or handbook does it say that the left lane is for passing, or it's tucked away so hidden such that no one remembers it. I learned that the left is just the "fast lane"
There’s even areas in Cali that have left lane turn offs. Like LA has several.

I rant about this all the time and the people who are often the offenders of this say "well you should be going the speed limit it's not called the fast lane!" You're right... its not called the fast lane. It's called the Passing lane.
i love people who think they know best for others, and then actively enforce their will onto you. wtf do they care if i drive faster. my sports car can safely go faster than your minivan, Karen. speed limits are a terrible argument too, set to 1960's car standards. top gear did a bit on the braking distances of cars then and now. it said something along the lines of a car must stop from 70 mph in under 220 yards. modern cars do that in less than 100.
The other thing these offenders will argue when you point out that there are signs that say "SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT" is "I'm not going slow, I'm driving the speed limit, so I don't have to move to the right". That is when we all need to point out that it doesn't say "SLOW TRAFFIC", it says "SLOWER TRAFFIC"; meaning slower relative to other cars on the highway.

Yes, it's this officious, self-righteous attitude that is a complete contradiction. They're obviously implying that the other drivers are going too fast, aka driving dangerously, and are imposing their idea of "safety" on everyone else. And perhaps they have good intentions (but we know they don't; just being control freak assholes). But the end result of their personal enforcement produces the OPPOSITE result: more dangerous conditions! Contributing to tail gating is NOT making things safer! They've pissed off everyone behind them who tend to make dangerous right-side passes in their frustration to get around them. And they're inciting road rage the entire time.
So in an effort to be safe, these morAns are making things incredibly dangerous. Talk about complete ignorance!

Minnesota is frustrating people left lane hog and don't move over. The speed limit is increased by 10 m.p.h. when passing on two-lane highways if posted at 55 m.p.h. or higher. So you are allowed to go over the speed limit to pass. The Behavior is so bad there wasn't a law against left lane hogging until recently in Minnesota. But people don't follow it. Wisconsin on the other hand pretty much leaves the left lane empty as you aren't allowed to drive in it. It's for passing only. People over there quickly get in the left lane to pass and move out of it into the right lane. Never had any issues over there.
Speed limit on a freeway SHOULD BE completely irrelevant if everyone could drive properly.
There is no speed limit on the autobahn in Germany because drivers go through proper instruction. Also no police is going to pull you over as long as you are going the pace of traffic.

If police started enforcing this as much as they enforce speeding and DUI, this would start to get better.
Better yet, if dmv across the country started including this rule in the tests.

Being waterboarded by the stupidity and arrogance of self-deputized fools is a fantastic receipe for road rage.
Too many broke and stupid drivers that hate their life use their car as a source of power over others. During rush hour, they'll do 5 mph under the speed limit in the car pool lane, holding up miles of cars behind them. Where else in their miserable shytti life can they have that kind of control over people? Can you imagine being in a grocery store aisle and that same ayhole standing in front of you with arms outstretched so you can't get around them, and walking at a snails pace. That's effectively what tens of millions of drivers do on the road. They feel entitled to waste others time when they don't have to see them confront them and risk getting punched in the face. Most road rage shootings should be justified self-defense.

I'm guessing that the left lane hogs are either 1.) completely oblivious that they are sharing a space with other people (similar to people in the grocery store who stand with their carts in the middle of the isle) or 2.) they are people who have little control over their day to day lives and find that slowing down traffic is their ONLY time to assert any control. Most traffic jams in my morning commute are not caused by accidents, they are caused by left lane hogs, often matching the speed of drivers in the right lane so it is difficult to pass. Thank you for this video, more people need to talk about American Lane Discipline.

In over 35 years of driving I found this to be true, " no matter how fast you go in the left lane there will eventually be someone behind you that for whatever reason will want to go faster." It's the passing lane for a reason.

my top 3 biggest pet peeves on the highway..
1. forcing me to pass on the right/clogging up left lane, and not using it as 'passing only' as it should.
2. Not signaling your turn, especially while cutting me off suddenly, or while lane weaving at high speeds between 3+ lanes to get ahead of everyone, rather than respecting traffic flow.
3. not going a consistent speed, and playing 'musical passing' where you speed up to pass/prevent me from passing, then I get back to the same speed on cruise, then you passing me again, only to get in front of me and eventually slow down, and make me turn off my cruise/pass you again. Repeat.
Bonus:, this is an addendum to point #1 that is almost a worse version. Trucks riding side by side blocking lanes for MILES!!!
(one time two trucks clogged up both lanes while trying to 'pass' for 10+ miles... seriously)

I use a technique where, while passing them-again-I wander in the lane to make them think I’m not fully in control. They almost always speed up and go away.
No one is forcing you to pass on the right. You're choosing to do it. You have control over your life. Understand that and take accountability for your actions. (including your speeding)
I’m a truck driver, and I can’t begin to explain how much this is accurate. It’s accuracy is probably over 9k. I am constantly having drivers who are going the same speed as the guy next to them, and preventing me and others from passing them. The 2 other big issues on US highways, are improper lane changes, and not realizing how much time and distance is required to stop. Your average car takes about 1 football field to stop in a hard break, it takes a tractor trailer 2x that, if the driver is paying attention, and knows to hard break.

The only time I have an issue is when I'm doing 75-80 and someone starts trying to pass me. Going faster than 75-80 is not necessary, and will put you at risk of getting a ticket (heck 80 can earn you a ticket here). Of course I have gone faster than these speeds but it's annoying when I have cruise control on and I'm trying to stick to the lane where I won't have to slow down.

I hate it when you pass a slow driver and as you’re in the act of passing them they decide THEN to speed up which causes you to either have to drive even faster or hover next to them!
Sounds like normal, day-to-day driving in Maryland. Add in what the man said about "SJW drivers who don't want you to speed", too: I've basically gotten used to people speeding to try to catch up with and then pass me, and then slow down to below my speed once they get in front of me so that I have to decelerate, and then they keep speeding up to prevent me from passing them. I don't even know what the point behind that sort of asshattery is...

I failed my drivers test the first time due to this. I was really annoyed because I got well over the points to pass. But I understood and when I toke my test the second time I passed.

Especially when there are two open lanes to the right. It happens here too, but it is emphasized in the driving school. Most of us should know, but still it happens.
Do that in Germany and you're dead with an Audi or a BMW coming at over 120 through the tailgate.

When i was a inexperienced driver i had some situation where i was a left lane loser, now that i am a good driver i feel so ashamed of this past situations but i am glad i learned and i am not a loser anymore.

It's got nothing to do with car alternatives. I've lived and driven daily in Germany. I rarely saw a left lane hog there. Germans take pride in their cars and their driving. Americans are by contrast, road slobs. And Germany also has trains that go everywhere if you choose not to drive.

And the saddest part is when someone pulls up and passes those slow drivers they always get upset and slam on their gas afterwards or aggresively merge.... after you already passed them.
Or they speed up whenever someone tries to pass them, as if it is their job to stop speeders on the highway...When in reality all they are doing is cretaing an unsafe situation.
@@NixonsHead Yeah this started to piss me off. Someone I passed went 10 mph more while passing them. This made me start speeding up behind them in their draft, then quickly passing so they have less time to speed up. Ridiculous

You're right. Highways are not racetracks, which is why I prefer them, and other good public roads. Racetracks are too overpriced, too limited, and way too inconvenient. There's times & places, where one can safely go fast, on public roads. And doing so, with a properly setup performance-oriented vehicle, will make doing so, even safer, because of the above average handling, braking, and stability. Speed limits are irrelevant. What's more important, are the road condition, the weather, the visibility, the likelihood of obstacles popping out of no-where, and of course, the traffic around & ahead. That's what keeps me safe. My alertness, my produce, my skills, and knowing the physical limits of my bikes. People can be as distracted, drunk, incompetent, stupid and wicked as possible. It is my responsibility to keep myself & motorcycle safe. The police & government can burn.
@Curtis Sherwood tell that to the race bike enthusiasts that go 140mph weaving in and out of traffic and the highway patrol does not do anything to them. Let me go 75 mph in the left lane and if you want to go 60 be in the right hand lane. The speed limit was set up for older cars. My truck rides so smooth that going 80 feels like going 50.
I think this is representative of a greater issue that we have in the US with general lack of self-awareness and lack of feelings of social responsibility
This is literally a life-or-death matter. I am an honorably-retired police officer with a successful law enforcement career spanning 30 years. A lot of people don't realize, that when there is a medical emergency, illegally blocking the left lane can significantly delay medical response. For starters, it causes traffic to back up. For medical emergencies, dispatch typically sends paramedics in an ambulance, fire department EMTs in their fire truck, AND a police officer in a police car.
Paramedics are the highest level of emergency medical training. EMTs are below that. Police officers are typically trained to the level of EMR (Emergency Medical Responder), which is more than First Aid and CPR, but less than EMT. Police cars are also typically equipped with an AED, First Aid Kit, and many individual officers also carry a BOK (Blow Out Kit) for major bleeds.
But the biggest difference, is the response times. Ambulances and fire trucks are virtually always dispatched from their quarters, so they have to get out of bed, get dressed, get in their vehicle, buckle up, start the engine, and then begin driving to the scene. Police are virtually always dispatched from the road- they're already driving. Plus, all modern police cars, even the Ford SUV, will do 150 mph, and all police officers have high-performance EVOC driver training. Ambulances and fire trucks are VERY slow, and their drivers do not receive high-performance driver training as a regular part of their training.
So think about what that means, when your infant stops breathing. In my experience as a police officer, I can tell you that we'd like to get there faster, but the left lane campers have got the freeways all clogged up. A lot of times, they won't even pull over to get out of OUR way when we come up behind them with lights and sirens going, because they think they don't have to pull over if they're not speeding..

It doesn't mean to slow down to the speed limit and drive with two wheels on the shoulder. It doesn't mean to speed up and try to make a left turn across the path of the emergency vehicle. It doesn't mean to jerk the steering wheel back and forth and then dynamite the brakes IN the traffic lane. It doesn't mean to try to guess which car I'm trying to pull over. It doesn't mean ANY of that stupid stuff. It just means to IMMEDIATELY move ALL THE WAY to the RIGHT, and then STOP COMPLETELY.

Sadly it happens in Canada too. Especially in BC! It was an odd driving experience when I spent a couple years in that province. Honestly, it felt like the only lane with less congestion than the right lane in BC are the HOV lanes. Worked fine for the most part I guess, cause I don't tend to speed at all, and spend probably 99% of my time in the right lane. It was so annoying when you had to pass a semi going like 10 or 20 under because I would normally have to reduce my own speed to get into the "passing" lane. My best guess as to why would be that there are just so many trucks in that area that nobody wants to make the lane changes to go around them.

@Drew Everett It's the same up here in Canada if you go by the book. However there are also signs that say slower traffic keep right (seen them in the US too), and I have seen cops light up people in the left lanes for not keeping up with traffic. Also if you ever drive in the mountains, you'll quickly realize passing lanes are VERY much so a real thing, the signs even call them that, and you will be very thankful for them.
I think it varies from state to state too. I live on LI and people are the worst. I remember going down to Florida and people were so much better at moving over. Bottom line it's about ego, if you don't move over if someone wants to left lane pass..... You need to do some work on yourself. That was something I noticed when I got older and started doing some personal self improvement....I moved over for passing motorist.

Driving is pretty much necessary in the US, but there definitely should be more education on it. I see people fuckup all the time, and sometimes it even results in an accident. The other issue is people taking shit turns at intersections like a right turn into a left lane or a left into a right lane. I have watched a person take a left on green left turn signal and get sideswiped by someone who took a right on red and then immediately went to move into the opposite lane.

Interesting video. I've driven a tractor-trailer for the past 23+ years. Yes, people driving in the left lane blocking traffic is indeed dangerous, as well as extremely frustrating. I just want to add, and you alluded to this at one point in the video, don't drive beside someone. Especially a semi! I see this all the time. I'm in the right lane, cruise control set, and I see a car coming up, looking like they're gonna pass, they get up beside me, and slow down, and just ride there. NEWSFLASH: If my left steer tire blows out, that truck is going left, and you're dead. No question about it. People don't THINK! And for the love of God, use your cruise control. Nothing is more frustrating than tooling down the interstate with my cruise set, some yahoo speeding up, slowing down, speeding up, slowing down, finally get around them, and they pass you again. Get back in front of you and do the same damned thing again. One last thing: with a four-lane (each direction) interstate, often there are truck restrictions. We aren't allowed in the left two lanes. You're riding in the second to right lane, and that's our passing lane. Those four lanes are only two for us. Two cars riding side by side in the right two lanes, and we can't LEGALLY pass in the third lane. Again, just holding up traffic. Damn. Rant over.
You know what's even worse than cars, are the tractor trailers that get in the left lane to go slower or the same speed as the vehicle they are trying to pass. In my area, they take up all three lanes when going uphill, causing traffic to slow to a crawl. It's annoying asf. It doesn't help that he police are super lazy with enforcement. None of this would be an issue if they did their jobs.

My grocery getter is a retired ambulance. Its amazing how many people get the hell out of the left lane when, A: A giant ambulance is crawling up their tailpipe, B: It has a very distinctive air horn. I cannot give two courtesy honks without giving them brown pants at the same time. Mind you, I do not go hunting left lane hogs, but when I come across them I absolutely have some fun with them.

Another thing having an ex-cop car is getting waved first at every stop sign you go to. One of the bad things I'd run into quite often is when I was doing a left turn, a car across from me turning right and had the right of way would just sit there because they didn't want me behind them I guess. That shit got on my nerves.

Karl my brother Mike drove Semi for over 30 years & I can NOT get it thru to people that when there's an accident between a truck & car, %99 of the time it's the CAR's fault. Semi's can't stop like cars. Other drivers get pissed @ me (especially when I drive down to Columbus) because I ride in the left lane & hold others up from popping in front of Semi's coming up to lights. Or when I hold cars up so Semi's can pull left to go around other Semi's. I flash my lights & stuff to let them know I'm on their side & almost always they wave, honk or something to say thanks :-) Like I tell those who bitch about Semi's "if you bought it, a semi-truck brought it". Mike mostly hauled steel but also hauled fuel for Marathon & he says there's nothing more scary than driving a fuel tanker, especially during the winter.
A lot of trucks also can't go over the highway speed limit because the company they work for has implemented a speed limiter in the truck.
People who pass truckers on the right are also the problem. I always assume that a trucker knows how to drive, so I wait patiently behind them. 99.99999999% of the time, I’m right.

It happens all the time in Columbus. I'll admit I drive pretty fast so I'm never in one lane but days where I do stay within the speed limit, I notice left lane drivers are slow as hell. I don't get mad because like I said I drive pretty fast so naturally I'm thinking "maybe I'm just driving a little too fast" but then I look at my speed gage. I'm doing 55 on a 65.....in the left lane, people in the middle and even right lane are driving faster than me.

What is weird is that people sometimes camp in the left lane and then get upset when someone tailgates them. Just let the faster traffic through! Sometimes people who drive slowly on a two-lane highway get upset at tailgaters - but it doesn't even occur to them to pull over and let the faster traffic pass! Maybe don't make it a competition and just let others do what they do, and you drive the way you feel comfortable. If others are driving faster, let them pass and go about your business at your own pace.
I could use this little reminder, thank you. It's really a pain when you have a crappy old car with a bad transmission that doesn't speed up fast enough, and I have to get in the left lane before a left turn and I try to do it shortly enough before the turn so as not cause congestion , which, I am aware is what you are supposed to do anyway but changing into the left lane to pass or to take a turn is just so stressful.

I've noticed this issue is much more severe on 3+ lane highways. With two lanes, my anecdotal experience shows that drivers /tend/ to be more aware of the fact that someone coming up on them has nowhere else to go.
If it's rush hour it all goes out the window. People are going to go in all lanes and not leave a passing lane open. It be a waste of road capacity to leave it empty.

I haul fuel and find myself in Salt Lake City quite often. There are left lane restrictions so I’m not supposed to use the left lane in the truck. But the middle stacks up from one guy doing 5 under and all the people merging and exiting make it difficult to pass on the right in a semi. I find myself in the left lane all the time to move thru traffic and try to make my deadlines. I do get out of the left lane as soon as I can, but when I try to pass the slow person they get all like “oh no, I can’t let a truck pass me.” So then they sit on my right side and keep me over there.
This one thing alone would solve MOST of the country’s traffic problems.

There's a two lane exit that turns into a two lane road that I take going to work where people do this all the time. So frustrating.
The real problem is that speeders expect everyone to get out of their way to accomodate them. They think left lanes were built to help them break speed limit laws. They think they have a right to go as fast as they want and that is what the left lanes are for. But in reality, roads are built with more than one lane in order to double the traffic volume in an area. All of these dangerous scofflaws need to get over themselves- they are the ones causing most of the wrecks.
This guy is one of those impatient self important jerks who has to pass anything in front of them. I like to stay over so others can merge easily. My following distance is not dictated by seconds, I like a 50 yard minimum.
My biggest pet peeve on freeways is when a driver merges onto the freeway with nobody in front of them and they immediately switch to the middle/left lane. I’ve had people cut me off before that way and they’re completely clueless.

Except the person in front of you is likely already going the speed limit (likely more) and for you to pass them swiftly in any case, you'd need to be going significantly faster than THAT. They're not the problem, you are. You can't use the passing lane as some emergency passing lane when you don't have any kind of emergency. Statistically, speed kills. When you choose to go well over the speed limit, especially well over the rest of the flow of traffic, you're encroaching on others' safety and I have zero care about what you think about the "lane hog" in front of you.

I drove in Italy a few years ago and I was shocked at how attentive people were to being in the left lane. People only used the left lane to overtake cars. It was beautiful. They passed a car and moved into the middle lane.

There was just a law passed(in Dallas I think) where you can get tickets for clogging the left lane. The largest ticket ever should be getting passed on the right. If anyone is passing on your right, you're in the wrong lane.

Another huge issue is the ON ramp. People in the right lane will literally floor it to 90+ to stop you from merging. I HATE this it is dangerous and pointless. Ive seen ppl get up to 90 almost pushing me into the shoulder and when i speed up to avoid it they then go back down to 65. WHY? WHY DO PPL DO THIS!?

People on cell phones do this very often too. What they do is tailgate a car that is roughly doing their speed...I've had those pricks do that when we're the only two cars on the road at 3AM in some pretty sparse stretch in a rural area. But when there isn't someone to track like that, they just sit there and when other cars speed up they do too because they're going off others. It is infuriating.

or vice versa. after work one day i was driving home and decided to pass a guy going 5 under the limit. i passed him and wanted to go back into the right lane, so i waited a few moments til i could see his headlights in the rearview mirror, but i notice he started speeding up as there was no difference in distance. (the headrest of the backseats block headlights, and he was just right at that spot where i could safely lane change) i honestly didn't realise it but i signalled right and cut him off, which i saw two headlights slowing down behind me.
Had this happen today, the girl thought if she gassed her 4 cylinder SUV, she'd stop my V10 engine from passing her with ease.

I'm in California too and this is a problem, but I feel the BIGGER problem here is a complete lack of using signals (including changing lanes, turning left or right, turning into a gas station, it's like they don't know how to use them), I estimate 90% of drivers don't use their signals.
There's also another problem I've seen in California that does not seem to occur elsewhere, at night probably every evening I drive home there will be one or two cars on the journey who don't have their lights on. Often it's electric cars, so I'm guessing they see they have low battery so need to preserve every last watt of power by turning off their lights.

Whenever I get over to pass, I make sure I speed up so that I pass quickly. If I’m going fast in the passing lane and someone is coming up behind me, I get over and let them pass

Funnily enough I've had situations where I go to move over and the person wanting to pass does the same, thinking that I won't move over. Makes it a little weird. Do I stay in the lane or go back to the left since they already started the right lane overtake? Those are the worst.
The only time I don't move is if there's several cars also going 80 in front of me. At that point the highway is congested and they're going to have to try their luck. I absolutely am not going to slow down my commute just so the guy behind me can end up stuck behind the 9 cars in front of me.

if you want german discipline then you need the german driving test for the licence too and thats not so easy like the us test

😂 no difference in Germany. If you are driving 150mph on the left lane there is always an idiot who ist driving 60mph on the left lane instead on the right where is enough space for him, because there is not much traffic.
Sometimes they pull on the left lane when they spot you in they're mirros to "educate" you because you're "speeding". Which is extremely dangerous and you're allowed to drive that fast.
In high traffic situations it is an different story an you drive slower. But as an example that happens often enough.

At least here in California the bigger issue is the dive bombers, merge cheaters, and people the refuse to allow you to change lanes to merge or exit creating entropy in traffic. It all comes from a mentality of only caring about yourself and not the way the whole system functions.
Yep. A much bigger problem than left lane hoggers are the constant lane changers. People are also driving way too fast in general. It’s not the SLOW drivers that are the problem
I always drive the speed limit or slightly below In the rightmost lane unless I have an upcoming left turn somewhere. It's always pretty nervewracking to see the late night "street racers" blowing out everyones ears and changing lanes suddenly, cutting people off and using aftermarket LED's without adjusting thier angle to match stock and avoid blinding folks. Like clockwork you have these people every night. Often In larger pickups too. Then there's all of your daytime no or almost no blinker people who change lanes quickly and abruptly, and use their blinker as an afterthought or not at all. Shit the other day I literally saw someone turn left at a roundabout.
I think another issue In California is the “they don’t care about me so why should I care about them” mentality. Self centered drivers create other self centered drivers.
Before moving to California I thought they'd be bad drives, but for the most part they aren't. The only noticably consistent thing is their terrible TERRIBLE merging etiquette. They'll merge 20 mph slower than the flow of traffic and cut off others. Sometimes they're WAY too fast. Sometimes they don't obey right of way and change speeds unpredictably.
California overall has the best drivers of all the states. I learned to drive in CA and feel so fortunate as it prepared me for all the other places I’d be where people were bad drivers or assumed women don’t know how to drive. California drivers are more willing to let people merge into their lane, keep moving along, and know how to use on ramps for acceleration. The only thing I don’t like are motorcycles who ride in between lanes when traffic stops or slows. Having lived in NC his whole life my husband was impressed with how much better CA drivers were.
I was driving from Cleveland to Columbus, and I was able to do 80-85 mph in the right lane because everyone else was in the middle and left lanes. SMFH.
It's also dangerous when everyone rides each other's back bumpers. If everyone creates a safe distance between each other, it would create a safer road to travel.
Yesterday I actually saw a work van that wasn't even doing the speed limit in the passing lane get pulled over for forcing people to pass him on the right, it was glorious honestly
Bro I see so many work vans in Florida that are driven by complete idiots. Drifting in between lanes, going under the speed limit, not using their turn signals...etc

@@Seanthefox same here, it's work vans or trucks with those ladder racks on them. I get their vehicles have a governor or a tattler on them, but that's even more reason for them to stay out of the passing lane. If you can't go faster than other cars then there's no reason to be over there

I think something that is even more dangerous is when people don't keep a safe follow distance and when people swerve from lane to lane like it's Subway Surfers. This causes other vehicles to brake more resulting in phantom traffic jams which disrupt the flow of traffic. I think the ideal situation would be if everyone had lane discipline, kept an adequate follow distance, and changed lanes as few times as possible.

You’re completely right. There is absolutely no reason to tailgate unless you’re a narcissistic idiot. You can speed keep you’re following distance when coming up on a slower driver and safely go around. People pay their taxes to drive on public roads and they shouldn’t be put in unsafe situations from entitled drivers that don’t care about rear ending and hurting someone.
People wouldn't lane surf if people had lane discipline in the first place. It would actually be impossible if people respected the lanes.
Its so funny that you would mention subway surfers when the whole point of the game is to avoid obstacles. Maybe you should move to the right lane and the game would be easier for everyone with no obstacles blocking the flow of traffic. Sometimes people want to go a little faster and there are legitimate reasons to want to go 10-15 mph over the limit. The hospital is one such instance. Also most accidents happen at low speed. A fast driver is generally more alert and aware. If you move out of the way and let them pass there are no issues for you anymore.
@@Darkoola This happens on one lane roads. Literally happened to me while going 90 in a 70 last week in a one lane toll road. The jerk elected to swerve onto the shoulder and pass me going better than a hundred.

I also hate the same people that will switch to the right lane - just as an entrance ramp shows up. At that point stay, pass it so anyone merging gets on easier, and go right. I actually changed to the left every time it’s open and someone is merging from an entrance ramp. It makes entering the high way so much easier for them, and all I gotta do is take a second to look in the mirrors.
That's sensible. The general guidelines to follow when driving on a three-lane section of highway that has many on/off ramps should be: right lane for merging on and off the highway, middle lane for driving, left lane for passing (when the car in front of you in the middle lane is not moving quickly enough). Nobody should pass on the right.
Thats True, but I will often find that I am going 10 miles over the speed limit in the left lane, and faster than everyone in the right lane, but still have a few cars tailgating with the worst attitude trying to go even faster.
I find traffic situations like this make me drive faster. When people are clogging the highway like an obese person's artery, I feel a claustrophobic urge to get around "the horde" as I call the common terrible drivers. On the rare occasions people drive like proper normal people, I don't feel the same urge to overtake everyone

Same here. Especially since I live around a lot of more industrial work right now. I worry about getting crushed by a flipped dump truck, a brick flying through my windshield, ladder falling off someone's truck etc. People either drive totally unaware or like total a-holes - it really represents everything I don't like about people lol

I've said to myself before that a lot of people really would benefit from re-taking their driver test and exam once every few years, they need it. So many people develop bad driving habits that are never corrected, and they get a selfish, aggressive and reckless behavior in traffic which endangers others.
This is cutting your nose to spite your own face, and justifying unsafe driving habits when a simpler option would be to slow down, go the same speed as the person you're fussing over, get in the right lane, and calmly listen to an Audible book while you casually get to your destination. Life is not a street race, calm down.

These are the things that should be prioritized in driving school, instead of putting all of there attention and grading into parallel parking. Highway lane discipline and roundabouts get heavily ignored in driver's ed

I keep telling people that in my state, if you are d riving in the left lane and not making a turn, and refuse to pull to the right lane when someone wants to go faster than you are, it doesnt matter if you are going 30+ MPH over the speed limit, if he wants to go higher, you gotta pull to the right lane. People dont believe me when i tell them its on the books and i have seen cops semi enforce this. Downside or upside depends how you look at it, its not a moving violation but something lesser.
What i mean by semi enforce, is that, if the person is impeding traffic and no one is being a dipS around them, aka passing them on the right lane, they wont touch it, but the moment you got a train of like 4-8 people passing this person going "slow" in the left lane , lights are blaring at that point, slow car is getting pulled over. Slow meaning slower than the speed of traffic, or what traffic wishes to go. I think it is called obstructing traffic or something along those lines. If im not mistaken its usually meant to be informative and a quick cash grab (still less than a speeding ticket, which is already pretty low).
IIRC this was passed to give a reason for cops to stop people from going the speed limit in all lanes of the road, side by side. AKA something like protesting people speeding etc. by getting like 4 cars in a 4 lane road, just cruise control set at the speed limit acting like a wall.

I recently got my license as an adult. Highways make me nervous so I stay in the right lane. When I'm passing the middle and left lanes going the speed limit you know there's a serious problem
There is one simple solution for all of this... One which Europe has used since the highway was invented... It's called a fine for not being in the most right lane possible.
Im 19 and easily have over 10,000 miles on the US interstate highway system. I really wish people cared more about this. Every time I'm driving with friends in the car I'm constantly pointing out bad driving discipline. The amount of people on the highway that don't use turn signals, don't understand passing, or both is appalling.
Bro and some just cut right in front of you with no signal and when you honk at them they get mad, instead of realizing that someone else could of rear end you, because you have to hit the breaks 😂😂
