    You need a more sophisticated kind of driver's license in order to enforce this rule. That's the reason why it actually works here in Germany. Also, this golden rule includes a strict prohibition of overtaking on the right.

    • @ArneBergsch
      @ArneBergsch 8 ปีที่แล้ว +127

      It's easy: If he had the possibility to move over, he should not have been there in the first place. Hence, he was not overtaking anyone. On the Autobahn, someone is always faster. There could have been a Veyron approaching at 230mph just behind that Tesla. So also the Tesla HAS to move over after overtaking.

      Wow, "constantly pay attention to the cars behind you"? Shouldn't you be paying attention anyway? The law here (Netherlands) is the same; only use the left lane to pass and then as quickly and safely as possible go back to the right lane. As long as you do that, you don't have to pay extra attention to the cars behind you, but if you see someone in your rearview mirror wanting to pass you, just speed up a little and pass more quickly.

    • @SilencedTomato
      @SilencedTomato 8 ปีที่แล้ว +58

      The law is not to let faster cars through. The law is to drive on the right whenever possible. Being on any other lane than the right one is considered an overtaking maneuver.
      And yea you have to pay Attention to the cars behind you in this overtaking maneuvers thats why it's only allowed to overtake on the left, so you can focus on that side.

      In California, it quite literally is. It's part of mandatory driver's training for people under the age of 18. You learn that when passing, you're supposed to use the lane to the left to the car that you're passing, and you're supposed to speed up to do so. Thus, logic would dictate that the furthest left lane should be the fastest and the furthest right lane should be the slowest.

    In Germany we call it Rechtsfahrgebot and we are taught this from early on when beginning driving school. It basically consists in driving as far right as possible on roads with multiple lanes. Calling it a fast lane would be incorrect as it doesn’t matter how fast you’re going. You’re only supposed to drive in the left lane when passing another vehicle. It’s not uncommon to be on Autobahn and being overtaken on the left by a car doing 300 km/h and then see it getting back into the right lane. This is because once you’re done overtaking, regardless of your speed, you need to get back into the right lane.

    Wait, hang on a minute...you can pass on the right in some parts of the US???
    German drivers aren't just more likely to use the left for overtaking only because of the lack of a speed limit, but also because passing on the right is AGAINST THE LAW EVERYWHERE IN EUROPE and is enforced. Even when there are no cops, you can expect to be honked at incessantly by justifiably angry drivers until you leave the left lane if you're slow.

    • @WraithCommander42

      In most of the US, passing on the right is legal, just not recommended.

    • @chrishenk4064
      @chrishenk4064 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      A huge part of the issue here in the US though is that people either don't know of (somehow) or blatantly ignore the laws. Here in Texas for example the highways are clearly and consistently lined with signs pointing out that the left lane is for passing only (as a law, not a recommendation), but it's actually MORE common that the right lane is the passing lane because no one listens. I think it's a result of the fact that semi-trucks face massive penalties for speeding and drive the speed limit as a result plus (again because they're better drivers and will get massive fines / lose commercial license if they don't) the trucks are always in the right lane unless they're passing. Combine that with the fact that 90+% of cars are speeding means that they end up needing to pass the trucks and the lazy, incompetent people remain in the left lane the whole time because turning the wheel slightly would be an ordeal so unconscionable that no human should have to live through it. There's a massive problem in US with driving because it's basically impossible to lose your license unless you're so poor you can't afford fines. There aren't any real consequences for breaking the law (many states are terrifyingly lax on drunk driving for example) so everyone just keeps doing it.

    During a round trip from Toronto to southern California a decade ago, we noticed this because we drove through so many jurisdictions, with varying laws. We were hauling my classic car on a trailer behind a full sized pick-up truck (both rented), so we were going fairly slow and careful. The "lane discipline" was definitely better in most of the US versus Canada, except for California. Keep right, except to pass, is common sense too.

  • @thepigwillfly5869
    @thepigwillfly5869 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Part of the problem in the US is that people are afraid to get out in the left lane and speed up to get past traffic in the right lane. This is caused by police being overly strict on speeding laws. As a result, someone in the right lane is doing 68 (in a 70 mph zone) and to pass them quickly, you need to speed (above 70 mph) in the left lane. We live part of the year in the US and part of the year in Europe. I have never seen a police officer pull someone over in Portugal for speeding....it simply doesn't happen. As a result, traffic flows nicely because people get out in the left lane, speed up to get around the car in the left lane and then get back over. In the US, too many jurisdictions (looking at you Virginia) are using speeding fines to generate revenue and that causes them to pull people over for going 5 mph over the limit.

Ideally, I would agree that people merging on have to yield, but that's just not realistic all the time. Have you ever gone on the on-ramp only to find cars are completely stopped waiting to merge onto the highway? It's extremely unsafe.

      Every country is different.... Do you not understand that concept? In the US, highways typically have a crap ton of exits and entrances... and some highways can get pretty narrow with tight corners. There's absolutely no way it would be safe to do 120MPH on most US highways with the amount of traffic that exists. Traffic also plays a large part in speed limits.
      I'm going to take a wild guess in assuming that los angeles highways have far more cars on it than most areas of the world.
      People here tailgate constantly... meaning they are right behind other cars going 80+ mph... There is zero time to react if something goes wrong.

      I still see slow (speed limit and below) cars in all 3 lanes at any time of the day. I've seen cars in the middle lane getting passed on both sides. There is plenty of room to move over, they just don't.

      We're "not allowed" to pass on the left (opposite lane system in the UK), a lot of people call it undertaking, but it isn't because that doesn't exist in the Highway Code.
      It's simply called passing on the left - which is frowned upon by the constabulary... Though not illegal if done with care and consideration, but you're almost certainly going to get pulled over if you do it. So, this is more like graduating from high school while somehow remaining unaware of the existence of something fundamental which a person should be using everyday, like punctuation. It's simple. I do not have to concede anything to people who cannot follow the law. If I'm in the left lane passing another car while driving the speed limit, and someone behind me thinks I should be going faster. Then they can just wait until I complete my pass and merge back into the right lane.
      I'm not under any obligation to break the law because someone behind me has poor time management skills, or is just a speed demon.

  • @zudemaster
    @zudemaster 8 ปีที่แล้ว +86

    Yes-it is the rule that you should stick to the right-the left lane is for faster driving vehicles and for passing. BUT here is the problem. There always is going to be someone else driving faster than you. You might be driving slightly faster than the rest of traffic, so you might think its OK to be in the left lane to pass other cars. So you get over to the left and instantly here comes someone rushing up on your bumper. No matter how fast you are going you are always going to have someone thinking its a car race and try to pass you. If the speed limit is 50 and you are doing 60 you will have a string of jerks who want to do 70. If you speed up to 70 you will have people wanting to do 80 and so on. It never ends. It is like a chain reaction. No matter how fast you speed up it makes everyone else want to go faster than you. If you get over to the left to pass another car it makes everyone else in back of you do the same. If someone is in the right lane going very slow when you pass them the cars in back of you are going to do the same, plus attempt to pass you as well even though you were not the problem. They will not simply pass the first car, they will stay over to the left and floor it attempting to pass every car in sight even though those cars are already speeding.

    • @bengski68
      @bengski68 8 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      That's fine though. Let's say you want to go 60, and the guy in front of you is doing 50. You switch over to the left lane, and as you finish switching some guy trying to go 70 is on your ass. What you should do, then, is pass the guy in front of you from the left, then switch back over to the right so the 70 guy behind you can pass.
      The general rule at work here is this: if you're not passing somebody at the moment, then switch out of the left lane. Conversely, if you're going faster than the guy one lane to the right, you can stick with it.

      You know a car has an option to slow down? It's a human driving, not a machine. As a human, driving in a specific high speed, you see someone signaling to over take you. You're both driving fast. Either you speed up a bit so he goes behind you or you slow down to let him go. It's not like people just switch lanes without even looking at what's going on in the road. Face it, this is a perfect method and you're just trying to find a loophole. Failed.

    In the UK it is law, and we call the lanes the slow lane, middle lane and fast lane.
    If somebody is on the middle lane when they could be in the slow lane, they get a ticket 🙌🏻 -
    Depending how many lanes there are, the speeds should (and normally do) increase in every lane as you move across. There cannot be any undertaking, this is also against the law, so this literally creates a faster flow - hence the names ‘slow lane’ and ‘fast lane’

    Finally someone mentioned this big issue. I was raised in Mexico, a country with wild drivers within the city. However common education prevents unexperienced drivers to use the highway unless you know defensive driving. I have faced this issue within United States only. Where highway driving is so common, therefore drivers don't really need to be educated to drive safely Within. My main rules to drive in the highway are: keep proper distance, drive up to speed limit or slower in the right lanes, and speed up or overpass on the left lanes.

      Andrew, I am with you with the speed limit, but on paper (the written law) and in a driver's written test (at least here in California), all drivers learn that it is _never_ safe to drive over the speed limit. I suppose if they admitted it _was_ safe to drive over the speed limit (and it is for many roads, my wife works in highway design) then it would allow drivers to argue about their speeding tickets

      This video focused on allowing speeding drivers to pass. It also forces sharing the road for a variety of safety reasons. Allowing one lane for just faster drivers while still enforcing speed limits can allow for a lane to be open more often than not. This gives drivers a safe place to move to when road conditions suddenly change IE tire blow out/large animal entering roadway. Not all vehicles follow the same speed limit either. Personal vehicles have a speed limit, most states force commercial vehicles over a specific weight to travel a different speed limit, and even hazardous substance transportation may have a different speed limit on the exact same stretch of road. Basically, it enforces driving in the safest lane according to road conditions instead of the most comfortable. So get over yourself. I bet your poop stinks just as bad.

    • @blaze46waffle

      Pete I'm not wrong. There's no need for you to go over the speed limit, pass me, only to go back to the speed limit.
      If everyone was driving the speed limit, there would be no need to pass anyone. Bigger vehicles do tend to go slower, and they stay on the right lane, but you don't need to pass me in order to pass them as well. I'm not going to be going slower than them.
      The people speeding are the ones at fault, you cant argue this.

    I don't understand how this is such a hard concept for morons too understand and accept. When I first started driving my dad told me, stay right, pass slow drivers and trucks on the left then move back to the right. Instead of saying something about how people shouldn't be going faster then the speed limit anyways, there has been many many times where people are going 5 mph slower then then limit on the left. It's easier and safer for everyone if people drive this way rather then too drive in any lane they want. There will be people who speed and people who go to slow, but that's not an excuse to drive brainlessly.

      There are 4 lanes on some parts of the autobahn it works well. Near major cities and where there is congestion there are electronic speed limits but the traffic still flows well since there isn't constant merging back and forth causing drivers to brake and a chain reaction slowing more drivers behind them.

      Ruben That sounds awesome. I just find it hard to believe that people would leave an entire lane clear for overtaking on a 5 lane highway (4 lane if you exclude the High Occupancy Vehicle lane) that's already EXTREMELY congested at peak hours to begin with. Even were it to become law (because that isn't the law in my state) how could it possibly ease congestion for anyone but those who decide to ride the designated merging/overtaking lane home to work and back?

    Speed limit advocates have a good point, but the fact is they can't control what some drivers do when they see an opening. So get the &$%@ out of their way and keep our roads - YOUR roads - safer. Thank you.

    A real life conversation!!!!!!!!! That’s when I realized “Speed Limits” are too antiquated because its too subjective. People need to be told exactly how fast or slow to go at all times. Its time we abandon Speed Limits and switch over to “Target Speeds” on major interstates and freeways where lanes further to the left have higher Target Speeds and lanes to the right have slower Target Speeds, where each lane has Target Speeds that are 10mph different from each other, such as Target Speed Signs that read:
    75 | 65 | 55 | 45
    And 45 is needed because some vehicles and/or people shouldn’t be driving faster than that anyways

    There are two laws relevant to this conversation. Speed-Limit and Keep-Right-Except-To-Pass. Not sure why one law matters more than the other.
    Would you expect somebody to keep right except to pass in the line at the grocery store? Of course not. Imagine that everyone on the road is trying to get to their destination, and doing so legally (in both speed and choice of lane) is their goal. Admire the people who obey the law, even if you can't. Be grateful that not everyone is more aggressive than you, otherwise it's a race to the bottom.
    Ask yourself if you would behave the way you WANT to behave if there were state troopers observing your driving. If you wouldn't do it in front of a cop, then please don't do it in front (or behind) me.
    Also, I hate this sentiment: "As Vox explains, driving slightly slower than surrounding traffic is actually more dangerous than going slightly faster than traffic."
    No, I totally disagree. You're just transferring YOUR danger onto someone else. If you become slightly faster then they become slightly slower and the danger is now theirs.
    There's a reason for a speed limit. Someone has given it some thought. Please obey both laws. Driving is a privilege, not a right. The price if your car and the number of minutes late you are do not factor into this conversation.

    • @trekimpossible2850
      @trekimpossible2850 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's very true that the two laws Speed-Limit and Keep-Right-Except-To-Pass are equally important. From the comments below, I think those left lane campers just choose the one they like. They stay in left lane because they want to go faster, but they also say others are going too fast and dangerous if one is trying to pass.
      The other interesting phenomenon In the area I live(SoCal) is that, it's not uncommon to see people fight for the tiny space in the already-busy left lane while other lanes are pretty empty. And when you are driving behind one of them, you are ignored, but if you are driving in front of them, you might get yelled.

    The real problem is that most states have "keep right except to pass" signs where it isn't actually a law. We have them all over in Wisconsin but, as your map indicated, it isn't actually a law. It doesn't actually bother me most of the time, only when there is traffic trying to pass you. If you're the only one in a quarter mile; drive in whatever lane you want. But move out of the way when someone approaches for behind you (they gave you a mirror to allow this).

      You don't actually have any evidence that if speed limits are set based on actual conditions and driver norms that people will still exceed that. Yes, if you set the speed limit at 60mph, most people will go 65-70, and then raise it to 70 and they will go 75-80. This is due to fear of enforcement, not human behavior. However, if the 85th percentile speed is 85 and you set the speed limit to 85, most people won't go 90-95.

      and 1 month later someone still doesn't get it... This is not about speeding, it is not about what other people are doing. It is about a common problem that actually causes more traffic flow problems than speeding. And that is that you, as a driver, have a responsibility to maintain the flow of traffic, and part of that is going the same speed as everyone else in the lane.
      On top of that, if no one is speeding then the left lane should be clear most of the time since no one needs to pass unless someone is under the limit. So either way, you should not be there going the limit in 99% of cases

In NC if you want to pass and someone is in the fast lane going slow, you flash your high beams and people move over. ALSO, If someone wants to switch lanes, you put your signal on, the person flashes their lights to let you know it's OK to move into the lane. NC driving 101. I haaaaate when people ride the fast lane.

What I'm saying, is that if someone manages to somehow obtain a license, AND pass both tests WITHOUT knowing the driving laws, that's the fault of the DMV for passing someone who clearly has no idea what they're doing.
      Taking a test without knowledge of the subject matter isn't a crime. Tests are issued to find out what an individual knows about the subject in question, and if someone manages to pass a test on a subject they know nothing about, that's a problem with the test.
      On the analogy of murder; that's irrelevant. People don't take tests to determine if they are allowed a license to kill. The crime of Murder is infinitely different than the crime of driving slowly on the left lane.

    I do a lot of long distance driving overnight. It’s blows my mind how often people will be cruising along in the left lane, with no one else even around. Now, one could ask, what’s it hurting if no one is around? Nothing. But then I’ll come up behind them, be forced to slow down, follow them for a little while, and they refuse to move over and let me pass. Now I got to pass on the right, and low and behold, suddenly they are speeding up. Next I’ll be doing 90 to try and pass someone that was doing 70, while rapidly approaching a semi. Alright, I’ll slow down and get behind them, I don’t want to sharply cut over inches away from hitting the semi. What a surprise, we are now going 70 again.

      Slow drivers, have a couple of friends that fit the bill, they get mad defensive because they start to realize they are wrong in many of the confrontations they get in on the road. There are some bad tailgaters but usually the real bad ones are the ones trying to cheat squeezing into one lane.
      That being said, slow drivers always have these stories of tailgaters, but rarely do you hear "And I moved out of the way so they can get to wherever the need to be!"
      Slow drivers could be driving slow for many reasons so its not their demographic as much as it is just bad, non-empathetic drivers, drivers that don't really know how to give "courtesy" to the cars around them. They tend to have slower reactions but in general won't let you merge, or seeing your blinker will speed up and impede your movement. The funny thing is they do it involuntarily! They don't even notice they are being dicks.
      Every driver I met that was bad driver always felt they didn't need to be courteous but were pissed when people took their spots over them anyway. I find that to be hilarious.I feel the best drivers always do the most to make sure all the cars around them move smoothly. Its not really explanable but the best description of this is that they are aware of other drivers and will give right of way to other drivers if it makes everyone safe.

Let me tell you how bad it is, especially in Virginia: Here, to get a drivers license, all you need to know is how to start the car, and where the gas and brake pedals are. The US needs to pass laws supporting much higher quality driver education, mandatory training. In Japan, the process is rigorous, and the expectations for motorists is that they are "Professional drivers". That is what we need, Professional drivers, because US citizens spend way too much time on the roads to justify the reckless, stupid driving that is the rule, not the exception.

      ikr, every twelve in my country knows this. you can think, or even of you are stupid, they teach it in driving lessons, it's one of the basic things.

    There are left lane campers that will actually speed up just to stop you from going around them, thus creating road rage

      In this scenario all parties would be speeding and the one trying to pass is tailgating.

      @@sirarnie9837 the bottom line... If you are driving slower move over to the right lane!

      @@sirarnie9837 I can't argue with what you said, and I'm the type of person that do not tailgate, I just wait for my moment to whip around them and keep it moving!
