  • In this video, I show you how to paint trees and lighting effects using oil paints. This painting features willow trees growing in a New Zealand mountain valley where the evening sun is bathing the foliage in light and shining through the leaves of the tree canopies.
    In the video I will explain the following:
    1. Composition
    2. Colours and brushes
    3. Blocking in the painting
    4. Adding detail
    5. Adding final details
    If you would like to paint along with this, check out the link below for the written notes that accompany this video. Feel free to copy the painting and copy/use the reference photos that are in the written tutorial.

    Before watching your videos, I use to think, I will always be horrible with trees and various shades of green, which can be a nightmare for a (novice) landscape artist, and I did watch hundred other videos or so. But thank you, now I can be confident in painting a tree that will look like a tree : )

    I usually paint watercolor and some acrylics. I made the error of buying water-based oils to give it a go. I has a sticky consistency and just assumed it was not a medium for me. But found later that the water based are in fact gummy. I have had no intention of working with oils (the mess with cleanup & smell of turpentine), however you have such an easy commentary to your paintings that I just might give it a go! Thanks Sam!!!

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Nora, you should definitely give it a go, I think oils are actually the easiest to paint with. You can by odourless solvents and mediums so you don’t have to put up with smells. I love oils as it’s a traditional medium, the colours are rich and vibrant and they are very versatile. Thanks for watching 😊

      Hey, all good. I love painting and I love helping people with their art. I want to be able to make a full time living from my art too, if I am working for someone else that is much less time I have for making TH-cam videos, especially as I am also a dad so my time is extremely limited, hence why I haven’t uploaded as many videos as I’d like to on this channel. The painting and video editing takes a very long time, I hope you understand. I’ll be selling videos for as cheap as I can, probably $30 USD for a two to three hour painting video 😊

    Q&A for ya Sam:
    1) Do you mix all you colours before starting or do you mix and adjust as you go?
    2) Are you mixing wet in wet or letting each section dry first?

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks. I mix all my colours as I go along and I’m always adjusting the mixture.
      With regards to studio paintings I let each layer dry first but my plein air paintings (outdoors paintings) are wet on wet.

    Brilliantly explained. Your commentary is clear and informative. I really enjoyed your video. Just one question. You used Liquin at the beginning. Did you use it or another medium for the rest of the painting? Your paints seem to flow easily. Many thanks for sharing your technique.

      Thanks Charles, yes I used Liquin throughout the painting. Sorry I should be more clear on that in my videos.

    My biggest problem with greens is painting too much greens with little contrast. Most of my landscapes have a little surprise in them. A hidden deer peeking out or a bird nest with Mom feeding her chicks. Not really part of the balance of the painting but it makes people search my paintings and maybe buy them.

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Greens are definitely a tricky colour to use and one that people have the most problem with, but there are loads of ways to keep them in check and looking nice. Addition focal areas such as some wild animals or birds can really add to a painting 😊

    landscapes are a challenge for me and it's exactly as you said....it's the green that gives me a hard time. I noticed you mix your greens. Do you find that mixing them gives you a more organic and natural color than starting with premixed colors like sap green or hooker green??

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, absolutely. The only pre mixed green I use is phthalo green which I use as a kicker to increase the saturation of my green, but you can also make something similar to phthalo green with just cadmium yellow and ultramarine blue. It’s always a good idea to ‘earth’ your greens by adding in a colour that contains red, its opposite on the colour wheel.
      In general you may find colour mixing easier if you use less colours. It will make the colours in your painting more cohesive and harmonious because you are using the same colours throughout your painting. These days I’m using a limited palette and of the additional colours I have I can make something similar anyway out of three primaries. Honestly, you don’t need many colours. As with anything in life if you keep it simple it flows and works much better and it’s the same with painting in my opinion.

    • @carolclay7082
      @carolclay7082 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much! I've been painting about 2 years and one of the first things I learned was that keeping to a limited palette makes everything work together. I'm in the middle of a landscape at the moment and using hooker green for the shadows. I think I'll try mixing some greens for the mid-tones and highlights. Love your work!!

    At 14:54 you say "As I model the paint on this tree..." Can you explain what you mean by "model"? I have heard Andrew T also use this word in a similar fashion, and would like to understand your meaning better. Thank you Sam.

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it doesn’t seem to be a common word in the painting process but it’s a great word. I also heard it from Andrew Tischler and from Edgar Payne in his book ‘Composition of Outdoor Painting’. It means to work areas by building up detail and form of the various zones of your painting. It’s basically adding details.

      Hi Salvat, yes you can use yellow ochre as they a very similar. Yellow oxide is probably a tiny bit more saturated than yellow ochre but you can honestly use either colour.

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, no I will use many brushes during each painting session as I don’t want the residue from a freshly washed brush to mix in with the paint as it could dirty it. There is a way you can wash multiple brushes as once and it works best with flat brushes. Get an old baked bean tin, fill it a third full with turps, the get a few of you brushes facing vertically downwards with the bristles just touching the bottom of the can. Place your hands together as if you’re saying a prayer with the brushes in between your hands and move them in a rubbing motion as if you’re warming your hands up. The brushes should spin and the bristles just touching the bottom. Do this for about 10 seconds then wipe them, if there is still paint in the bristles, wash them again. After you have done this rinse the brushes in the same way with fresh turps or kerosene (if you can stand the smell). It’s always a good idea afterwards to wash you brushes every few uses with brush soap to maintain your brushes. I hope this helps 😊

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, yes I see what you mean, I would just wipe then with a paper towel and make sure you get as much paint out of the ferrule as possible. I would also have about ten to twenty brushes ready so you can mix lots of colours with muddying them. I have many of the same brushes and I often use between ten to twenty brushes during each painting session. Obviously make sure you clean them thoroughly when you have finished painting.
