I started using a grid for drawing lightly with a pencil first and then blocking in my painting. I use medium values, then dark, then light and put in the fine details last. It works for me.
Your relaxed style Sam accentuates your artistry skill communicating so effectively the finer points of relaxed painting It was one my most enjoyable experience talking with you in Lumsden around the time you commenced your new studio Your enthusiasm for art Talking me into it has been a big part of my life enjoying acrylic landscape painting of rugged New Zealand Keep up the great work Doug
This was a great tutorial! I could really follow along smoothly with this video. I enjoyed your tips on the mountains video too! TFS! Just great and beautiful work, techniques and teaching...👍🏼👍🏼
That's a great and simple way of tutoring mate. Those are the core principles to everything you paint. Specially making a mention of tonal values... That's where most people get stucked. As I did in the past. Thanks for that. Enjoy your painting as well. Cheers
Thanks Sam, terrific tutorial well explained. I am a beginner and have been trying to paint for 2 years. I will watch more of your videos and hope I improve.
👋Hi Sam, thank you very much for this tutorial, a very fine painting. I like the colors, the light is perfect so that all the shades come out excellently. That's the advantage of plein air painting, I think. Have a nice rest of the week. 💖
what a great no nonsense , good explanation narration video this is... Im gonna nick that format for my next video.. hope you dont mind. ive been rambling lately and this is a great example of how its done,. thanks.. great painting as per keep it up chap.
Thank you John. Yes, copy my format. I know us English have a tendency to ramble a little (I am from England myself). I keep in mind that in this TikTok generation people have a short attention span. It’s best to get straight to the point whilst keeping your video interesting. Feel free to reach out if you have anymore questions about making art TH-cam videos 😀
Really lovely, I live in the woods in Austria, old South-african , I am retired and try to get more creative , this is a very good tutorial , Im going to buy paint and get started , big Hug , be blessed with plentyfull.
Thankyou so much for your helpful videos! and love your realism yet painterly style. I love the idea of plein air painting and can’t wait to get started (in Winter in cold part of Oz - I must be crazy!) just a question about process- why do artists often paint the ‘sky holes’ in the trees after the tree has been blocked out- it seems tricky. would it be easier to do a kind of wash beforehand and paint the tree over it? (Sorry for my ignorance!) cheers and thanks again!
Here’s a trick… click on Share, click Copy Link. Then you can email it to yourself. Or Google “convert TH-cam to mp4” and select a place where you can paste in the link. It will convert it and allow you to download and save the video. (The place you select will likely have ads to help pay for their services. Just hit the back link. It will take you back to the download area and you can save the video).
This painting needs to be critiqued .. All is good with the exception of the road going down into the tree. The tree should be moved more to the right because of not only composition, the road should not become the tree. The fence does not belong even though it’s there. If there has to be a fence, make it irregular. The sky is very good.

Thank you. Painting sky holes afterwards is easier but also can create a nice painterly effect in your artwork.
A very clear and lovely demonstration. I am not sure what you mean when you use the term "modeling?" Many thanks.
Thank you. Modelling is a process in painting where you are making the elements in your painting look more 3D. Generally refining shapes and forms.
Great demo...thank you 🙏!
My pleasure! Thanks for watching 😀

Hey Cindy, you seem to know a lot about composition. Are you an artist? I’d love to see your artwork. Do you have a website?
