    Thanks for including White Nights. I am a beginner and they are very cheap over here. So I started with a 24 full pan Sonnet pallet and added colors by buying the 10 ml tubes. They are ~3€ here.

    I *have* noticed that White Nights granulating colours have a funny ... weirdness to them. They were my first real paints after a small Cotman set, and I have just assumed I don't like granulating colours. I have started replacing the White Night's colours I don't care for with brands I prefer and just reusing the pans that came with the set. I have their earlier multi-pigment siennas and umbers and their yellow ochre.

    What a wonderful video and comparison. I never realised the tones are so different amongst the PV15. I rarely use it as I always mix my purples, but it occasionaly goes in the mixes for granulation. :) It's beautiful.

    I just swatched Oto's Ultramarine Violet dotcard last night! I definitely think it's a low tinting strength, but it does rewet easier than some other paints like viridian. I would also call it "low coverage." I think it requires a lot of binder, and that's probably what you're noticing about White Nights. Oto sometimes has noted bubbling with certain brands, so perhaps that has to do with binder too. On my dotcard, Daniel Smith rewet horrible!! I think what DS calls Ultramarine Red is also called Ultramarine Pink in other brands, like M. Graham and Qor.
    On Kremer's website, they have a set of 36 different shades of ultramarine ranging from pink, to violet, to blue and green!

    • @everartokelli
      @everartokelli 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      DS Ultramarine Red and Qor Ultramarine Pink are both PV15, MG Ultramarine Pink is PR258 and Roman Szmal Ultramarine Pink is PR259, but I think they're all in the same red-violet color area.

    • @jennw6809
      @jennw6809 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@everartokelli Thanks for the clarification! You know, I had my swatchcard of the M. Graham Ultramarine Pink marked PR 258 as well, which I believe I got from the website/color chart, but I looked at the tube just now and it says PR 259.
      The M. Graham appears exactly the same hue to my eye as the Qor PV 15 version (although I only have a dotcard swatch of that one). I also have a handmade pan from Dan Barrett, also PR 259 and it's a more saturated true pink than the other two, a "cleaner" shade. But weirdly, it goes white when you layer it.

    • @PaintinHiding
      @PaintinHiding  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      low coverage sounds good! yeah, i never quite know the right words to use. thank you 😊 i think ur DA rewet horrible probably because it’s a small dot and mega dried before it got to u. ooohh maybe i’ll have to do an ultrmarine red and ultramarine pink comparison. i have this DS one and roman szmal ult pink 😆

    As for white nights, I agree with the “gummy”/awkward feeling of the granulation. I don’t know quite how to describe it, but I agree, there’s definitely _something_ a bit odd about it!

    I have Schmincke`s and White Nights`s. The White Nights one I don`t like, and Schmincke`s I absolutely love, `cause it`s a lovely blue tone violet (much bluer, I`d say, than all of these), with beautiful granulation and so easy to rewet. it`s a mix of PV15 and PB29, but it`s a great mixing colour, too. From the swatches I like the look of DaVinci and Mijello, although I am not too keen on violets.. I`ve found the only two I like is this Schmincke`s one, because it`s bluer than dioxazine, and Rose of Ultramarine, from the red leaning ones. Thank you for the comparison))

      their PY40 cobalt yellow granulates beautifully, PR209 quin cherry red is one im looking to get if/when i finish my daniel smith quin coral of same pigment, their PV102 cobalt violet brilliant light is heavenly but sadly discontinued, i like their single pigment PB29, one of the most granulating ult blues that i have, i love their PB36 cobalt green deep. it’s kinda like regular cobalt turquoise but a tiny bit darker. then there are PBr29 vandyke brown deep and PBk27 cobalt black that i’ve tried on dots and want to get tubes of one day.

    The Mjello looks so different on the second swatch - is it on the same paper? I find granulation shows so much better on cotton paper. Lately I have been using Qor, which granulates less than others.

    • @PaintinHiding
      @PaintinHiding  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      yes, it’s on the same type of paper. i think paper texture also shows granulation different. while the paper in my swatch vids aren’t cotton, they perform well in that they show granulation and colour separation well. and if it shows on non-cotton paper, then it’ll be even better on cotton. that’s been my experience at least.

    • @jennw6809
      @jennw6809 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@PaintinHiding Yes, I agree. And I guess it goes to show how important the application is when you want separation and granulation (or if you don't.) Granulation occurs when the pigments flow over wet paper, so I find it helpful to tilt my paper when I want it. I recently bought Schmincke French Ultramarine and notice that the granulation is completely controllable - you can get a smooth wash or wonderful granulation depending on how you apply. The Schmincke Cobalt Blue Deep is exactly the same hue, but granulates uncontrollably. Fun stuff :)

    I experienced the gumminess the first time i used the ultramarine violet with a small round brush no. 2. Subsequently, i used a no 6 brush (Princeton Heritage), and it painted more normally (less gummy)
    I think the gumminess sometimes may be due to some binder separation which may be worst when we start using a new tube?

    • @PaintinHiding
      @PaintinHiding  ปีที่แล้ว

      it's just white nights' formula because the gumminess isn't just with this PV15 and not a binder separation issue.

  • @everartokelli
    @everartokelli 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good paper is so important to show off the granulation of ultramarine violets, cobalts--really all granulating paints! I use PV15 & PR233 in skies and landscapes, as I like the (much maligned on TH-cam) "low tinting strength" colors a lot, they do so much work in skies, landscapes and urban sketching either on their own or mixing on the paper with other colors for creating natural textures. Thanks for sharing your swatches, love comparisons :)

    • @PaintinHiding
      @PaintinHiding  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i use PV15 in my skies too! and i agree, low tinting colours are so important because they enable use to skew a colour towards a different colour temperature by the tiniest bit without going overboard. magic! haha~ you’re welcome! more comparisons coming your way. although not a wide selection like this one ;P
