@@PaintinHiding I am definitely in the love it camp. I discovered them before brands like Roman Szmal (pardon my spelling!) came out, and I love the full pan size! For me, as an amateur painter, having low cost, easy to use paint is wonderful. I think the word I have for them is "enjoyable". 😊
@@jengoodwyn2715 u spelt it correctly :) and i agree with both your comments about full pans and low cost. i initially wanted more colours in a palette so went with half pans but later on really liked using large brushes and the full pans were much better haha ;D

To be honest, I used to be more of a fan of Manganese blue hue but these days I'm turning around and liking the granulation and brightness of Cerulean Blue. I've got Daniel Smith's Cerulean Blue Chromium, Eve Bolt's Cerulean Blue Chrom. and for my bday I'll be getting Rembrandt's to try. So far I love Eve's and D.S.'s. Or I could just be easy to please, but I digress xD
DS ceru blue chromium is PB36 though. it's a different shade to PB35. which one in rembrandt are you aiming to buy exactly? because if u get rembrandt PB35, it's warmer than DS ceru blue chromium. but if you get rembrandt ceru blue deep PB36, it'll be cooler (greener) than DS ceru blue chrom.

I have P.B.35 based cerulean by Rembrandt, White Nights and Pinax Extra.
I love them all and all of them differ a bit shade wise.
White Nights is the greenest which I like :)
Yes, the White Nights version does have more filler but it’s also the cheapest.
Plus its green shade is beautiful.
I don’t think it has any white pigment in it as P.W.4 and P.W.6 based watercolours feel much “crunchier” so to say.
But, yes, due to fillers it might be harder to pick enough pigment for washes, etc.
Still, it’s possible and I even managed to do mixes with it.
The Rembrandts’ one is nice and granulates beautifully, plus it’s quite well pigmented but I miss the greeniness of the White Nights in it.
Glad that I have both.
Pinax Extra is somewhat between Rembrandt and White Nights in shade, has very little filler, granulates moderately and mixes well, but some people admit that it might be used up quickly due to the soft texture of the paint in the pan (they don’t sell them in tubes yet), so it might be not too economical.
The Holbein and the Winsor & Newton versions look beautiful but are too expensive for me :/
One of my all time favourite colours. I have the W&N version. It's so expensive but I can't bring myself to switch brands. It's just the best imo. Thanks for this review.

I don´t like the white nights one either for the exact same reasons you mentioned. I will be trying the holbein one, it looks beautiful!

Winsor & Newton's cerulean is the one I use, I really like it, bought once and never tried any other brand, the same with viridian and manganese violet. The only W&N I use in watercolors.
I was tossing up between Rembrand and Holbein you helped me make up my mind.

I have the Holbein, also because of Oto's video. I absolutely love it. I also got her cerulean dot card, and I really enjoy the Sennelier (it's made with PB 28 if I recall correctly!) I would like to try that one when my Holbein runs out. I've also been quite curious about the W&N, so great to see it here! I also have a handmade PB 35 from Dan Barrett, but I must say I prefer the Holbein (don't tell!)
oooh! we chose the same one! hehe! woahhh sennelier's is made with PB28?! that's insane! well, i guess that shouldn't be surprising since there are cobalt teal-y colours made with PB28 as well. hahaha my lips are sealed! ;P
@@PaintinHiding Yes! I recently got M. Graham Cobalt Teal which is also made with PB 28. And it's extremely similar to DaVinci's that's made from PB 36! And so many others are PG 50. I find all that fascinating.

After your video, I made swatches of P.B.35 and 2 of P.B. 36 from White Nights. All of them are a bit milky and very light. The White Night blue cobalts that I have Cobalt Turquoise (P.B.28), Cobalt Blue (P.B. 28) and Cobalt chrome turquoise (P.B. 36), Cobalt Azure Blue (P.B. 36) seems to me quite transparent and good for skys. Other blues are significantly more deep and rich, especially Turquoise Blue (P.B. 15:3, P.G.7) and Ultramarine (P.B. 29, a classic one, not Deep Ultramarine).
I've always loved the Winsor & Newton Pro Cerulean Blue, beautiful tropical sky color with lovely granulation, but the DS Cerulean Blue Chromium is a better color for PNW skies and a more versatile mixer color. But it's nice to see other versions, thanks for sharing!

Pb35 is really beautiful for skies, I think I prefer warmer and very granulating versions as well. I have tried the pigment in White Nights, Schmincke and recently Rembrandt. My White Nights has the same "milky" and delicate feeling but I used to love working with it alone, not so much in mixes. It's the only paint that remained so wet in the palette and eventually spilled out of the pan making a huge mess XD I'm not sure what brand I prefer yet but I enjoy mixing what I have handy with Indian Red (tip from Denise Soden) to make greys. Also with Pbk11 to make a nice granulating blue grey.
it definitely is! i'm with you on that, i prefer it to be warm rather than cool. i have my turquoises to be cool for me haha~ wait, was your white nights from a tube or pan? my white nights ceruleum blue came in a pan and i had no probs with it drying. but i find that other white nights from tubes don't dry at all as well. ugh~ maybe they put too much honey haha!
@@PaintinHiding I feel the same way, I use turquoises for cooler looking skies ^_^ My white Nights pb35 is in a pan but these all get wet when I am in humid places (I have to change places every year for work as a substitute art teacher). I have tried using a dehumidifier but they are still wet, haha. So far no mold problems so that's good XD
Very useful to,know Holbein Same as W&N Cerulean Red shade….I have ..and love…love the Holbein but if it’s so expensive I might get W&N next time..although I am aware W&N tube colours are harder to rewet

I like both the W&N and the Holbein versions. The Holbein version is very similar to PB28 Cobalt Blue, so I think it’s very good for skies.
I have the Holbein, and even though it looks quite dark here, I don't see it the same as PB 28. Although, I'm quite intrigued by Sennelier's which is made from PB 28!
i think the more i look at cerulean blues, the more i just love them as long as they're not too dull haha~
Rembrandt is simply the best pigment available
I’ve got the W&N Cerulean Blue but find it very weak - maybe I should pre-wet it for quite a while like you did. It’s a lovely shade though and granulates beautifully. I really like the Holbein version too, as I sometimes want less granulation, and the warmer shade is quite appealing.
I’m really interested in your planned PB36 video. I’m not really sure I like the colour, although I do use it as I’ve got the Daniel Smith version in my travel palette. I just find it a bit dirty-looking. I also have an old Lukas version, which is very granulating and almost identical to the DS paint, as well as a new Lukas version of the same colour, which is slightly greener and practically non-granulating.
how long ago had you bought ur w&n cerulean blue? i've heard that they may have adjusted their formula in recent years. because even if i don't prewet my w&n, i don't find it to be weak at all.

i agree with you! i'm not a big fan of DS pb36 ceru because it's dull and u said dirty-looking. completely agree. it's not very bright and clean.
@@PaintinHiding Oh, I didn’t know they changed the formula of the W&N Cerulean Blue. I got the halfpan in a set about two years ago. It’s quite an odd blob of paint in the pan. It’s a beautiful colour and for skies probably easier to dose in this low tinting version, but it’s nowhere near the intensity of the one you swatched in your video.

Never notice how warm holbein is, its very pretty. I too usually watch dr oto kano first before deciding which brand i get and since holbein is super affordable even for their 15 ml tube i probably get them.
oooh! where do you get your holbein tubes if they're so affordable? i recently watched oto's PBk31 comparison vid and she mentioned buying Sekaido (art shop in japan) and i checked out their prices on their online website and it's insanely cheap but they don't ship abroad. :(
@@PaintinHiding i got them from baliartmedia in shopee, i think they shipped to thailand aswell the cerueal cost Rp103k or around $7, they carried all holbein range from acryla to traditional gouache, the most pricy holbein is the cobalt violet and for 15ml over there it cost Rp140k or $9.7, their perylene green or shadow green is as good as w&n and not too gray as daniel smith. Yes, buying holbein in japan is the best way, i was at itoya and the price is still pretty decent, but i got the w&n instead since hey it’s cheaper than buying in indo
@@ari_9354 ahhh ok, that's quite the similar price to a local shop that sells holbein here. woahh i didn't realise w&n in japan would be cheaper. i thought it would be much more expensive there because they discourage foreign brands? at least that's what i a friend told me. cool to know though, thanks for all the info! :D
@@PaintinHiding w&n is still more expensive than holbein over there, but it is cheaper than the Daniel smith or schmincke, thats why i got them. Back then i didn’t know holbein is that good if i knew i probably got the holbein one instead

I have the Holbein and the WN not red shade and I enjoy them both, but I'm most likely going to order the Da Vinci PB36 from the other video because I fell in love with that one. lol I added it to my list anyway. That list is getting way too long. lol

Idk Holbein looks like completely different colour to me.
I have white nights and I think it's the least favourite colour I have, pigments are just not there

hi there. i don't use acrylics so i'm not familiar. if it's made with the pigment PB29, then most likely so.
The Holbein hue is more like the Winsor & Newton Cerulean Blue (Red Shade) I like the way W&N offers both red and green shades instead of a compromise shade like the other brands do.. nIf you had swatched the W&N Red Shade you would have probably found it to be the reddest by a little bit, just like the green shade is the greenest by a little bit.

@@PaintinHiding No preference for me as I use them for skies and use several blues, a different one each landscape and since these two along with Manganese Blue (I make my own from my pigment supply) are the most commonly reached for I really appreciate having the two shades for variety, however, the Red Shade is better for warmer midday skies, while the Green Shade is better for those softer cooler days. Same thing when using it as a mixer base for lighter greens, the variety is good as the Red Shade leans more to olivey greens, while the Green Shade leans toward the more yellowey greens such as sunlight striking into a darker leafy place.
My favorite of all the Cerulean-type pigments has always been Manganese Blue and it really ticked me off the way the last factory making it was shut down in 1990's when a big corporation bought it as part of a group of factories, and it was the larger factories they wanted, and they chose to shut the little factory making Manganese Blue because they didn't care about a small volume pigment just for artist use that was old and needing substantial investment to bring it up to modern safety standards for the safety of the workers. I bought up as much pigment as I could afford, and I still have more than 10 kg left. Hopefully that will be enough for the rest of my life.
@@artistjoh ahh i guess you paint rather realistic pieces then? i think i'm not at the point yet to use different shades of cerulean to depict different skies. in my watercolour journey, i'm currently just happy to use the preferred warm cerulean blues for skies. generally speaking of course.
OH WOW! you've been painting for that long?! please do be safe with your stash of manganese blue. but i'm sure you are since you're aware of all the toxic effects. but that's really cool that you were around back then to buy them all. unfortunately i haven't been able to try any genuine manganese blue so i can't really relate/comment on it. from what i've seen online, it does look very beautiful in that it's more vibrant than PB35. love the granulation too. cherish your stash! :D
@@PaintinHiding The 1990's is quite recent in my books. I still remember the first tube of paint I bought with my own money back in 1965-ish. It was Winsor & Newton Terre Verte.

White Nights is way cheaper so it is expected to have more fillers.. I all comes down to budget😅
White Night's cobalts are notoriously weak, expensive pigment. We also have pinax extra which seems to be better but more expensive.
White nights paints are far more superior to Daniel smith’s paint, that’s just my opinion….
