If anyone else is looking for a fix to this, the first thing you always check is your PCV valve. If it's stuck, you'll often push oil past all of the seals and smoke like mad. It can look just like bad valve guides or rings. Usually a $3 part, so go check that before you spend time doing anything else. If your car is smoking when you rev it, it could be rings or valve guides. Valve seals usually smoke when starting, or sometimes after idling. If you drive it for a bit and it's still making a cloud, it's time to do a compression test, take your oil cap off and feel for blowby, etc. If you have low compression in one cylinder or a ton of crap coming out of the oil cap when the car is running, it's likely rings. Don't get too scared by bad rings. Most people will tell you to rebuild the whole bottom end while you have it apart, but if you're desperate and the bad rings haven't messed the cylinders up too badly, you can often get away with using a ball hone and only replacing the rings, with the motor in the car if you have to. You will want to take the head off, so I'd recommend at least doing a head gasket at the same time, but if you're really broke and just need it running again, a hone + re-ring is the cheapest way to fix it.
Great information Roland Anderson I appreciate taking the time writing these tips. Im a do it yourselfer and most of time Ive been successful fixing things from tips like yours. I will take my truck to the mechanic and find out wth is wrong with my truck. It smokes crazy at start up after driven for at leat 10 minutes it goes away. Ive been told I have a valve leak. After I replace valve covers and pcv valves. Im very embarrassed of driving it because all the smoke and I dont want to cause anymore damage to the engine maybe it can be fixed. It hasnt lost any power. The smoke its somewhat blue im not losing any coolant so I know its not the head gasket.
How do you know this...mine smokeß at start up,be it morning or nite, then when I raise the slow(aka injector mouth, aka throttle body) cloud of smoke from my rear view mirror, smell of burning oil cabin feels hot to the trunk.mechanic said my engine is gone ,lol.i just laughed cos I know its my stem seals.my exhaust tip ,very black with enuf carbon...it kills my plugs, esp 3 of my plugs out of 6,plugs tip soaks in oil,oul leaking from exhaust gasket, despite seals tight, engine makes a little whistle sound from the pcv area, once I step on gas.so made up my mind to rebuild my top cylinder and change stem seals...would drop feedback. I've used stop smoke, stp, ressurs abro stop smoke, infact I've used all the oul additives, even stepped up to 20w50,still no difference I know my seals are gone and probably my pistons top is burnt with carbon. I'm awaiting my endoscope from aliexpress, too see the top of pistons ...
Bad seals for sure. If u let it just idle for a little without giving it gas I bet it gets worse, just did the seals on my tai and solved the issue no problem
Seals will not normally burn consistently. Bad valve guides will. A bad seal will burn off all the oil after a few seconds on first start up but bad guides will have oil being pulled into the cylinder all the time. Bad guides can ruin good seals too so it's almost pointless to replace one if the other is bad. Do you have any noise from the engine during any operation? 100% worldview Things that cause the smoke are usually a blown head gasket, cracked cylinder wall, valve stem seals or as the gentleman suggested 2 years ago in the original comment the valve guides.
my 03 sentra smokes only on startup. then goes away wen the car warms up... you say its bad valve seals? how do i fix that... right now im just topping off the oil every few weeks. and my oil is as black as hell... even though its only been 3000miles since i switched to a thin synthetic oil...
Just replace the seals or deal with the smoking. Also change your oil more often. If it's black, it should have been changed already unless your vehicle is a diesel. If you have the time and money, just go ahead and rebuild the engine and call it a day.
I had the same problems but my friend recommended this additive called "no smoke" you can get it at your local auto parts store it stopped smoking but you can smell the oil being burnt. But it stopped smoking
Ik this is late but If all it does is stop the smoke then it is absolutely useless. If oil is getting into the combustion chamber it will only get worse until the engine can no longer run.
I had a valve job 7 months ago and now I have smoke in the mornings and it's gone through a litre of oil too. Don't really drive it so miles are low since too. She's going back sat morning. Not happy.
I didnt drive it long enough to figure that out. I bought the car this way and fixed it within a few weeks with new valve stem seals. I have since sold the car.
I am not sure, I assume if it was really bad that would be the case. I haven't owned this car for 4+ years, however after I replaced the valve stem seals the smoke stopped for the 9 months I drove it before selling it.
That's not a lot of smoke. Valve stem seals usually cause lots of smoke on cold start and after idling at stoplights/stop signs for extended periods. Rings usually cause smoking all the time. My car creates a smokescreen on cold startup. I consider it upper cylinder lubricant. The car isn't ready for a rebuild yet. In my experience, a little smoking isn't going to ruin a car so long as you let it stretch its legs every so often and otherwise take care of it. Had a Honda that smoked worse than any video I've seen. It kept on going until I sold it at about 300K miles (it began smoking sometime before 200K miles). Not sure how modern cars are though with handling burning of oil.
did you ever figure out what the issue was? I'm going through what I think is the same issue.. my valve stem seals. it will smoke a little bit on start up then clears up. itll start to smoke on take off and clears up once I'm cruising. if I am in gear while decelerating itll smoke for a minute as soon as I hit the gas again or once I come to a complete stop. also smokes when in boost. let me know what fixed your issue please. oh! I also know its not my rings cause I have good compression and leak down test checked out good aswell..
it was definitely the deals this was a few years ago. let me know if you need the correct tools like the spring compressor. I don't have a dsm anymore so I'll let them go for dirt cheap.
+YesICan sweet. I was leaning towards it being the seals. I have the compressor tool but wouldn't mind another one depending on the price lol how much shipped for it
Hey did you end up fixing the issue considering your explination? I have the same word-for-word issue as you regarding smoke. Clears up when driving, blipping throttle while on decel will smoke, stops at a complete stop.
yea. it turned out the exhaust seal on my turbo was shot. I removed the chra from the turbine housing and it was puking oil. picked up another used holset turbo and good as new.

i got an 06 legacy that smokes blue when it sits awhile think its just bad seals?

i was thinking the same .My acura rl only smokes if i let it idle for a while.. doesnt smoke at start up or any other time

Jean-Luc Picard what about on Bmw s pcvs cause smoke and oil separator aswell
Hi I got a eclipse GST 96 with the same problem please let me know how you fix the problem

What kind of oil consumption did you have?
Quart per 600 miles?
I didnt drive it long enough to figure that out. I bought the car this way and fixed it within a few weeks with new valve stem seals. I have since sold the car.
So, what was the issue?
Yes i can or anyone who knows alot about cars but would bad stem seals symptoms be a oil residue where the tailpipe is
I am not sure, I assume if it was really bad that would be the case. I haven't owned this car for 4+ years, however after I replaced the valve stem seals the smoke stopped for the 9 months I drove it before selling it.
Hey yes I can is your car boring oil or have a oil subsence at the tailpipe
patrick lynch ye I have this issue
Color of car reminds me of the green goblin on the forums fb groups.
Same color. tropical frosted lime I believe is the name.

Yep I'd says valves seals too not a hard job to do
Are you serious?!! The camshafts have to come off, or in some cases the whole head! And you're saying it's not that "Big of a Job?"

What kind of muffler is that and where can I buy it? Anyone?
Just replace your oil with Rotella. Thats what I do if im too lazy to fix my shit.
Does that work?? Lol
Piston rings
The valve stem seals aren't the problem. The problem is that you drive a riced out DSM.
Yeah that's it...
You drive a gay prix, you shouldn't be talking.
Riced out lol, I have a Jeep but my brother dives a rice burner (Rhonda rover/Honda). It gets called a rice burner
he's just mad cuz you'll beat him in reverse
>Grand Prix
lol
The problem is you bought a foreign shit box that burns rice. Notice the smoke coming out of the exhaust from the rice being burned.
Says the fucking ricer. lol sftu
Morguls Tower stfu ricer lol
Morguls Tower probably drives Ford with a mullet down his back. Or he's 12 and just learned all the variations of Fuck.
Dude said rice burner lol lord its old already
