  • So, Logan Paul has been fairly embattled over his CryptoZOO NFT project. He's fighting back now... by suing Coffeezilla, his biggest critic. Let's talk about that.
    Also, possibly some other things. Let's hang out tonight, as Rob is away.

    Coffee said in the past that when he doesn't wear his TH-cam outfit and is wearing his glasses people don't really recognize him much on the street or they say he looks familiar, but don't exactly know who he is. He explained that he very much prefers it that way. If I remember correctly he's also in a band that plays regularly in pubs and he's glad to do so without being recognized as a TH-camr. Maybe I'm wrong, but to me he doesn't seem like the type of person to be offended because he wasn't immediately recognized by Runkle.

    I worked as a public servant in Japan at the time of the Aokigahara incident. It was how I found how who the Paul brothers were. It was so hard for us, trying to deal with all the hurt he caused both in Japan and with our partner relations. The fact that he puts in this lawsuit that it was only good for understanding the importance of his reputation makes me so angry I have no words. He has no idea of the lasting effects he has had on others.

    • @epicalduck
      @epicalduck 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Oh, would you mind elaborating a bit? I think that the mostly known thing is the public’s reaction to the incident, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a perspective from the Japanese side of things that were affected by this.

    • @juumoku
      @juumoku 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      @@epicalduck For me, it was going into work one day and suddenly getting a lot of calls and emails asking us to deal with this video. I can't talk too much about my job, as it was mostly dealing with American counterparts/companies, but I can give some of the reasons for why people were upset. Japanese understanding of the dead is different than American, the body is still treated like a living person, and it is important for the dead to be as intact as possible. It is a family's duty to take care of the body and the soul, until the final resting. Logan's actions crossed all over that, and for many people whose loved ones were still missing in the forest it was terrible. Others just found it offensive and coupled with his actions in Asakusa, deliberately disrespectful of Japanese and their history/beliefs. A lot of people were angry, hurt, and wanted action taken (authorities, banned from re-entering the country, fines, etc.) If I remember right, the authorities did an extra body search that year because they were concerned curious people might try to go and and find the body Logan had found.
      Worse, his apology had Japanese subtitles but they were awful. They were written like a joke. While in English he was saying "I'm really sorry" the Japanese subtitles were more like "well sooooorry". It just increased the feeling that he did not care and did not see the Japanese people as real people.

    14 pages in & all I've learned is LP doesn't need help ruining his own career. He can do it all by himself.

  • @MsMcBean
    @MsMcBean 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +18

    For a person who claims to be a well-known celebrity, LP displays a shocking lack of understanding of what journalism is and how it is paid for. Has he somehow gotten to adult age without ever encountering a tabloid? Seen TMZ coverage? Does he know what paparrazzi are?
    He seems to think coffeezilla posting accurate information (allegedly 'biased' in tone) is somehow in violation of journalistic ethics. Reporters for well known non-internet media outlets can also show obvious bias. Honestly coffeezilla was extremely forgiving of LP in the series and I feel like it was LP's own actions (refunding egg sales but not tokens, the buyback program taking so long and having ridiculous legal obligations, his obvious disregard for all the victims who lost money) that ruined his repuation in the wake of the cryptozoo scam. Even in this obviously frivolous lawsuit where he claims he too was scammed by the con artists he hired for his project, he uses scare quotes around the word "victims".
    He easily could have eaten the $7M reimbursement and gotten enough good PR to repair the damage of his earlier behaviour. Instead he highlighted that he was and still is a 💩 person. And since he also doesn't acknowledge that his "hired artists" somehow produced 💩AI "art", or that he did formerly pump-and-dump other crypto tokens, or that coffeezilla was right to criticize him for not disclosing his personal incentives when promoting those tokens (because advertising has laws that content creators are not exempt from). I am so sick of his self-serving bull.
    The only acceptable outcome for this case, should it not be dismissed immediately, is for a court of law to declare that Logan Paul is indeed a scammer and it is not defamatory to refer to him as such.

    I got the impression Ian thinks Coffeezilla is wealthy? I've been watching Coffee since the Coffee Break era and he has spoken about how he cannot take sponsorships. His income comes from ads and patreon and it is the patreon money that pays for his investigations.
    If you want to be ethical and uncover scammers then it is not a very lucrative youtube career. It is a full time job requiring technical expertise but seems to be difficult to make it pay. My memory is of the earlier years being quite tough going for Coffee.

    If you think of professional wrestling as a gigantic expensive LARP on rails, it makes more sense. There's a DM (writer's room) that knows what stories it wants to tell. Then, it puts the athletes in situations that play out the story. If they need someone to lose, the opponent gets a hidden stat buff. If someone needs to win, the opponent gets nerfed. (Yes, they already know who is going to win, but in unlikely matches, something "magical" will happen to sway the results so they make sense.) To me, WWE makes way more sense as an RPG than it does as a sport.

Despite how funny it is to point out that Logan is a terrible person, it's pretty obvious that an argument of "lol. what reputation?" wouldn't fly in court (at least, not in this case.) That being said, I feel like the fact that that argument would almost certainly fail actually increases the chances that Logan's lawyers thought to counter it.

His team put a lot of time and looked into every angle of this scam. Even talking with his team ( Logans team ) to clear up most of the questions which they couldn’t do, in-fact some of them gave some real dum answers. I know, I’m old but I always thought that crypto currencies would all crash within a relatively short time. The main reason I thought this since the beginning of bitcoin it’s that a rare glitch in a computer doesn’t constitute ANY value at all. All the other exchanges values existing in the world, have a MATERIAL set of properties that make them tangible and exchangeable. Labour, gold, petrol and so on, for example. Recently bitcoins have lost £20.000 on the stock market. It can only keep going down because of its ephemeral value. It will be interesting to see who will pay for this financial crisis. I bet it’s going to be the working classes again. As usual. Capitalists fuck up and we have to deal with the cost of inflation and recession!!!

    After being exposed Paul made all this big promises about how he was going to finish the game and reimburse people as a way to save his image. Then he immediately went silent about this for over a year. Only after people kept calling him out to fullfil his promise did he make that awful payback offer that doesn't even include the people who bought the tokens. I'm not sure I would call that Paul being committed to the buyback program like they do in the lawsuit.
    Also the reason why negative videos kept being made about him is because he was hoping people would forget about this and he could get away with it and not reimburse people. Had he kept communicating with the victims he would have gotten positive coverage like he did when he originally announced that he was going to reimburse them.

    Huh, apparently Texas has an anti-SLAPP statute. It's called the Texas Citizens Participation Act, and as best as this layperson reads it, is more or less exactly worded to prevent this kind of nonsense. One of the things it explicitly protects is "gathering...information for communication to the public," Tex. Civ. Prac. & Rem. (Fancy legal symbol idk how to type in sure you know what I'm talking about) 27.003(a), 27.010(b) (2019). So yeah, Logan Paul might get SLAPPed! I frankly, in this humble nobody's opinion, hope he gets SLAPPed HARD, and is on the hook for mad legal fees as a result.
    I didn't expect Texas to have an anti-SLAPP law, honestly. I'm kinda impressed, since it doesn't seem like the kind of state that would have such a thing. I have no idea if it has the figurative teeth that some other states' statutes have (see California, for example, which apparently has a rather impressive anti-SLAPP statute, from what I can gather), but it does at least have something, which is cool.

      Because court stuff is expensive, and because court stuff isn't always cut and dry. So there is no guarantee that it'll be resolved anytime soon. So it's likely it'll be a burden on the smaller party.
      And well, this is a big rich youtuber with a whole team of lawyers and an agency behind him, against a one-man-team youtuber who's focused on quality over quantity and doesn't have a similar reach, in other words, he isn't youtube rich. fun fact: logan paul actually was on law & order svu as a criminal, specifically in the episode intimidation game. the tldr is that it's not very good and portrays both sides of the real-world event very poorly, but below is a summary so you don't have to watch it.
    the episode is based on gamergate, which was a harassment campaign against minorities (particularly women) in video games disguised as concerns about ethics in journalism. in the episode, a female video game developer receives threats from people online as her game comes close to releasing, she's assaulted in a bathroom at a convention, and The Good Guys™️ have to find the people behind it. it portrays the entirety of gamergate as violent misogynists (which a large portion of them weren't), ice t is in the episode and him being a gamer in real life is constantly shoehorned into the script, the game dev says that her assaulters "leveled up" in context of the attack, her online harassers are extremely tech literate yet somehow easily fall for undercover cops, and it's just an incredibly cringey watch for anyone who has a touch of an idea how video games, internet culture, or even just assault works. to tie this back in to logan paul, we get a scene of his guy and ice t's guy having a gunfight. 2015 was... an interesting time.
