    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Flash (Sam J. Jones) crash lands the war rocket Ajax, interrupting the wedding ceremony of Ming (Max von Sydow) and Dale (Melody Anderson).
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Heroic earthling Flash Gordon saves the world from the nefarious Ming the Merciless in this lavish, intentionally campy adaptation of the famous sci-fi comic strip. The story is as basic as space operas get: Ming (Max von Sydow) has developed a plan to destroy the Earth, and Flash (Sam J. Jones) and his attractive companion, Dale Arden (Melody Anderson), are called upon to stop him. Along the way, Flash must battle Ming's goons and the temptations of a luscious space princess. Previously the basis for a more straight-faced 1930s adventure serial, Flash's story is mined here for exaggerated, cartoon humor by screenwriter Lorenzo Semple Jr., a central figure in the similarly campy '60s Batman television series. The simplistic plot mainly serves as an excuse for spectacular sets and cartoonish action sequences, all set to an appropriately over-the-top rock score by Queen. Certainly not a film to turn to for serious excitement, fine performances, or character development, Flash Gordon has nevertheless developed an appreciative cult of fans who admire the film's humorous approach and the detailed, colorful production design.

I love that they did not even try to reign in the production design. Mongo looks like the Land of Oz under a Nazi occupation. Also I just realized the wedding minister is the ghost caretaker from the shining which is extra cool.

Yeah the sets and art direction of the movie are fantastic. The music is just as good, I get goosebumps still from Flash's theme.

The Axis allegory? This is literally Bolshevik USSR in space. Red uniforms, NKVD uniforms, stars instead of swastikas, Eurasian Stalin. Flash literally having a lightning symbol. This is pretty much Fashy America vs Galatic Communist Ming. or maybe a fusion of the two?

This was hands down my favorite movie of my childhood. I was blown away by it. I have seen a lot of comments in here about cheesy dialogue and so forth. Keep in mind that it is a children's movie. To this day, I think it is the greatest children's movie ever made. The creativity behind the story and the visuals was excellent, many of the actors in it are British theatre legends, Max Von Sydow played MIng, the other actors did their jobs well, and Queen did the soundtrack. They really put a major effort into making this movie.

Personally, I really like Flash Gordon 1980 and Flash Gordon along with The Black Hole with Robert Forster and Moonraker with Roger Moore are the most underappreciated sci-fi films of all time. Flash Gordon 1980 had a superb Queen soundtrack, Sam J. Jones did a very good job as Flash Gordon, and Max von Sydow as Emperor Ming is one of my all time favorite sci-fi villains along with Dr. Hans Reinhardt and Maximilian the Robot. I also love both Moonraker and The Black Hole from 1979. Moonraker is a very underrated and awesome Roger Moore bond film, The Black Hole was a very good sci-fi Disney film, and the John Barry music scores for Moonraker and The Black Hole were both absolutely brilliant.
Overall, I will always have a soft spot for Flash Gordon, The Black Hole, and Moonraker. Flash Gordon 1980 as well as The Black Hole and Moonraker are all way more better sci-fi films than any Star Wars film made after 1980's The Empire Strikes Back, Star Wars as a Franchise was never the same when Gary Kurtz left in 1980, and The Empire Strikes Back from 1980 was the last great Star Wars film ever made by Irvin Kershner and Gary Kurtz.

In the 80s, there was a German 10-part "Flash Gordon" audio drama (which used the Queen theme as intro, albeit in a cheap cover version). Part 1 was a summary of the movie. Part 2 continued with Ming being resurrected from the ring. I assume most of the other parts' stories came from the comics.

Peter Wyngarde (General Klytus) talked about the sequels that were suppose to happen. Dino talked to him that the black glove was his character's hand that picked up the glove. Dino didn't say how this would happen, but he said that Klytus made his way to Earth, managed to set up shop there, and was definitely more ruthless than Ming. However, Sam Jones' feud with Dino kiboshed the rest of the movies. Sam left before post production so most of his lines were dubbed in by an unknown actor.
