Vultan - the living embodiment of the phrase "Come & have a go if you think you're hard enough". Just total joy in the flight and the battle, a prime candidate for a bloody good seat in the Halls Of Valhalla!

What I love the most is how committed it is to its insanity. There is no wink-wink to the audience, no forth wall breaking "Heeey, guys, relax, we know we're silly", NO. These weirdo characters do their campy and cheesy things with a straight face and utter sincerity. It's like looking at a live action cartoon world. This is camp done correctly. When you watch it, you don't feel awkward but charmed and having fun like the actors are... On the other hand something like, say, Joel Schumacher's Batman films and performances like Tommy Lee Jones' Two-Face or Bane are just cringeworthy. They're just phoning it in and chewing the scenery, they are not committed.

Brian May's guitar kicks in right at the moment the Hawkmen reach the ship and invade it. I love it. Moments like that made me a fanatic for this movie when I saw it at the theater in 1980, when I was in third grade. To this day, that experience is the most I have ever enjoyed watching a movie. I remember wishing it would last another 12 hours. I am 48 now, and I have different favorites, but I think this version of Flash Gordon is the greatest children's movie of all time. I wish I could watch it through my childhood eyes again.

We waited for this to come out on pay TV in Canada in Novermber 1980. The Queen concert/documentary came out in October or so which was basically a teaser for the movie. I was like 6 years old so this was the most epic film I'd seen besides Star Wars....lol.
goose bumps EVERY time i watch this! heavy casualties! no "good guy protection" in this scene, our birdmen 's first waves take horrible losses but nobly their sacrifices make it easier for the following squadrons to turn the tide! "Second wave- dive!"
One of the best parts of the movie. It was such fun seeing this for the first time, at school of all places, in the 5th grade. We had a movie day and watched it in the assembly hall on a projector screen. It was just like being at the movies.
I wish someone could make a movie like this today. It pains me greatly that at least half my generation all of the current one just doesn't grasp what makes something like this (and even the original black and white serials) amazing. It's not about how realistic you make something or how awesome the special effects are, but how creative you can be and how much imagination one can put into something. The more imagination the more epic it becomes!
I'm 37 years old....I just RE-enacted what I did when I was an 8yr old black kid with an Afro, back in 1982 jumping on my mother's dresser, KICKING HER PERFUME'S on the floor, ...PLAYING BROOM GUITAR.... Thrashing about, turning coffee tables over, shouting...DIIIIIIVE! I'd put my Tape recorder on a chair next to the TV. I STILL GO CRAZY WHEN I WATCH THIS KILLER FREAKIN SCENE! I'm not into Rock/Metal, but i start THRASHING and MOSHING by myself when I hear this! WOOOOO!
Its still one of the best and cheesiest films ever and I still love it after 33 years. I just wish I could go back in time to when I was 9 and watch it again in the cinema for the first time. Brilliant classic film.

There's a couple of shots where you can tell he's just having FUN being the Bad Guy! ^_^ Sure - If you go in expecting a GOOD movie you'll be wincing, but if you go in expecting THE BIGGEST FLASH GORDON COSPLAY SKIT EVER!!! Well then you'll be highly entertained. ^_^

I read in an interview that Brian Blessed said that Vultan was his favorite character in the comics and tv show. So he lost it when he was offered the role. People on set said that most of that laughing wasn't in the script. But the director had said that it fit perfectly so he just let him go to town on set. And it worked, 43 years later and we're still talking about it.
Love this movie! Vultan was hillarious in the "football" scene clinking the soldiers and whistling that it wasn't him lol :) Gotta love the infamous black boots all evil soldiers wear! :)

The Ajax commander shouldn't have never stopped all engines. The Hawkmen would have become tired chasing after the ship. It's similar to a bus being attacked by a gang on foot.

Fun fact, those hawkmen costumes were very uncomfortable for the extras. Because of the wings they couldn't sit down between takes and had to lie on their stomachs when they weren't filming. A special "perch" made for Brian Blessed so he could sit.
I once watched this movie at 4 in the morning after a long day at school/work. I found it very humorous, this part in particular. It has become one of my favorite movies as a result.
This movie was the 1st and most perfect time I have ever spent with my father! He and I were so enthralled with this movie and what it meant to BOTH of us, Flash was his chidhood hero and what he ((I, as his son)) wanted to be! I love him for taking me to this and gving me something/someone to strive to be!!

I think Voltans miserly non-involved stance from earlier in the film is a more natural indicator of the nest oriented Hawkman mindset. The fatalism of this boarding action is in my opinion the attitude of a people with nothing to lose. But I have had 2 bottles of red wine.

Cheesy effects don't matter when your dealing with this amount of RAW EPICNESS all at once. Lasers/maces, spaceships, rocket scooters, Hawkmen, crazy combat........ AND QUEEN! = AWESOME! Inspired aerial battle + awesome soundtrack = a scene just kicks ass in every way! Modern film makers could (and should) learn a lot from this film.

Cheesy effects don't matter when your dealing with this amount of RAW EPICNESS all at once. Lasers/maces, spaceships, rocket scooters, Hawkmen, crazy combat........ AND QUEEN! = AWESOME!

The bit of music that plays at 2.26 was the sound that The Big Bang made when the Universe was created. The sound is so epic it doesn't even need air to be heard. This tune CAN be heard in a vacuum somehow.
