Flash (Sam J. Jones) leads Vultan (Brian Blessed) and the Hawkmen into battle against the war rocket Ajax.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Heroic earthling Flash Gordon saves the world from the nefarious Ming the Merciless in this lavish, intentionally campy adaptation of the famous sci-fi comic strip. The story is as basic as space operas get: Ming (Max von Sydow) has developed a plan to destroy the Earth, and Flash (Sam J. Jones) and his attractive companion, Dale Arden (Melody Anderson), are called upon to stop him. Along the way, Flash must battle Ming's goons and the temptations of a luscious space princess. Previously the basis for a more straight-faced 1930s adventure serial, Flash's story is mined here for exaggerated, cartoon humor by screenwriter Lorenzo Semple Jr., a central figure in the similarly campy '60s Batman television series. The simplistic plot mainly serves as an excuse for spectacular sets and cartoonish action sequences, all set to an appropriately over-the-top rock score by Queen. Certainly not a film to turn to for serious excitement, fine performances, or character development, Flash Gordon has nevertheless developed an appreciative cult of fans who admire the film's humorous approach and the detailed, colorful production design.

I think they both knew what they were doing but understood how they had to play their characters to make it work. There is a fascinating interview when Blessed says that he knew Jar Jar Binks wasn’t going to work because the actor was doing the noises too much over important dialogue and as Boss Nas he had to make sure his dialogue was clear
This movie needed a comedic sidekick to Flash, like in The Mummy. “Do you want to LIVE forever?” “Well,” actually, YES!”
Brian Blessed’s gaping maw deserved an Oscar for this scene.
I particularly like how Brian Blessed showed his subtler side to his acting repertoire in this film. A finely nuanced performance.
They wanted to reshoot some scenes, but it seems Brian Blessed had chewed up most of the sets.

My dad took me to see this as a kid. I'll never forget hearing that soundtrack and watching this scene. Love you dad.
My Dad did the same. My brother and I would always make our Dad play this soundtrack on his 8 track player in his Cadillac.

I had the best childhood ever. Flash Gordon, Krull, the last starfighter, enemy mine, gremlins, goonies, Hawk the Slayer. Just great movies.

i was 7 in 1980......saw this in the theater. hated it. it wasnt Star Wars. took me clear into adulthood before I fully realized the MASTERPIECE it truly is.

2:13 Laser blasts flying every which way, and he is just casually knocking out Mongo troops like he has invulnerability mode activated. Badass.
I love how from 1:55 and on, you can see how much enjoyment King Vultan gets out of warfare. That Hawkman really does have some balls of steel!

Except until the crass decision of "stop all engines, repeal boarders". It should have been "engines at full, course upwards, shoot at the boarders".
@@AlexKasper Yeah the Commanding Officer is an idiot, lost the Ajax and the entire crew.
He was ordered to bring back flashes body...which means an accidedental disigration or its loss or his escape = the commanders tourture to death...the Ajax was lost due to general karlas orders
@@AlexKasper Somtime it prudent to acepte a pitched battle, that give you a possibility to destroy the hostile army and win the war.
But it all depend on the "conventional wisdom" the assulting hawkmen are to few to overwhelm our defense. Then stay and fight was the right order. Compare to the assulting hawkmen have the numbers to overwhelm our defense, then to stand and fight was the wrong order.
The next Guardians of the Galaxy NEEDS to be a Rock Space Opera like this!

I watched this movie at the theater in 1980. I was in third grade. To this day, that is the most I have ever enjoyed watching a movie. I loved it, and I wished it would go on for another 10 hours.
This movie has some of the best music I’ve ever heard and not just the theme song
Thank you Freddie Mercury(1946-1991), Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon for giving this phenomenal movie a taste of Queen.

I just loved this movie. Saw it twice when it was in the theatre. I’ve always been a Brian Blessed fan. Let’s not forget Queen. They nailed the music.
Costumes, music and trippy visuals all on-point. Flash Gordon remains my favorite cult classic film.
God bless BRIAN BLESSED! He tells a story that they had to very carefully set up this scene, with all the actors on wires and pyrotechnics, the call for action goes and he starts running around with his plastic gun, dispatching bad guys, but he kept making the "pow pow" noises with his mouth (supposedly Ewan McGregor did the same thing with the lightsabers in the Star Wars prequels), causing them to have to cut and reshoot parts of it.
I'm 90 percent convinced Brian Blessed forgot he was making a movie, thought this was all real, and then crashed through a wall one morning on set in dress and just started hitting people
I like how the guy that Flash humanely kicks at 2:33 gets shot anyway :D

Sorry uncertainty of comand between the posible words in relation to recognition was instantly distinguishable giveing their corse of action that followed the comand that's not to say it did not sound like the word die instead of dive do to inunsyation and somewhat of an accent
That's how I heard it too, although I expect the line was supposed to be "Dive!" However it's very appropriate to hear it as "Die!" considering the circumstances, and I wouldn't put it past Brian Blessed to have deliberately made it ambiguous for the scene.
It was "DIVE." It was a command to the attack wings to dive at the Ajax.
Buy the dvd, stick it on subtitles, problem solved 👍
2:23: My reaction to how good the effects and props are for a movie that's currently 41 years old.
I loved this flick when it came out. My parents took me to see it at the Drive-In - I was about 5 years old. Got the Flash Gordon theme on 7-inch vinyl around the same time. I loved that record, especially the B-side w/ Football Fight. This could only have come out in the small window of time towards the end of the Carter Administration - The post-70's/Pre-80's Disco Futurist era. What a weird time that was (1979-1981).

I love how the Hawkmen, esp Blessed, speak like finely aged Shakespearean actors, but when they get hit, they make injured birdie sounds.
The costumes, props and music are glorious

Even though this is a campy 80s movie, this battle scene is well done. The enemy soldiers are competent and a genuine threat. There are heavy casualties on both sides and there is a good sense of the fog of war.
Brian Blessed truly blessed us with his performance: "Diiiiiiiiiiiiiiveeeeee!"

I remember seeing this opening day with a packed theater of Star Wars/Sci-fi nerds. Nobody was sure what to make of it at first, but eventually the audience got into it.
Family Guy blessed a whole new generation of this scene, and I am not disappointed.
I saw this in the theater and loved it!! I still love it to this day. I watch it a lot during winter months when I'm kind of bummed out.
