reminded me of some people I know in New York who used to take their Jag XJ6 to the rough end of the Bronx and leave the keys in it in the hope it would be stolen but it never was
Congratulations on the carb discovery and fair play to you for admitting the mistake. It happens to all of us. On the Weber carbs the running from off-idle to 3000 rpm is handled by the idle jets (yes I know it sounds counter-intuitive). The jet options from the factory are wrong for present times because modern fuels are not as potent as they were back then. This normally necessitates larger jets for proper running. After extensive testing with O2 sensors in the exhaust I have found 53 idle jets to work best. They are a little harder to find but they are just that bit crisper on acceleration to the 55 jets and the 50's tend to be too lean.
Excellent info! I'm waaaaay too invested in this channel. These types of diagnosis can be really frustrating but also very satisfying when you nail it.
@@Number27 A miss or a flat spot ? A flat spot will be exasperated, by running lean , so maybe go straight for the 55’s you have until you find 53’s , and perhaps it’ll magically work out ?
I don't have a Ferrari but I do have twin DCOEs on my car. One thing I've come to realize, over time, is there's no substitute for a really good Weber guy, with a dyno. There are so many possible combinations with Weber carbs that getting it just right without a dyno, and someone who actually understands Webers, (and such people are now few and far between) is extremely difficult to achieve.
Idle jets are critical, and my experiments say the jump from 50 to 55 is huge. I like the idea of 53. You can get jets from alfa1750 on eBay. Any size you want. I use O2 sensors on each side of my flat 6. LHS wants 60 idles, RHS wants 62 idles. It is just the variation between the two 51 year old Zeniths demanding a slightly different spec. My point being: yes! Change the jets to account for today’s fuels.
“It feels like a Ferrari”. Magical words, and we’re all delighted for you. Hate to say it, but a swap of all the electrical again now with the other car would be useful and maybe able to help you now carb issue is out of the way. It’s got to be worth a try, surely? Good luck!
7000 rpm, that's where you need it!! Well done mate, we're all human, and it's good to make mistakes. You only learn if you make a mistake, and you got to the route of the problem and now your Ferrari runs like it should. Nice one Jack!
Light at the end of the tunnel!! Your global family is very happy for you, and we're excited that you will fine tune the engine in short order for maximum performance and fun!! Bravo, good sir!
Wow Jack, finally good news. That wasn't an easy one, mow some fine tunning and will be spot on. Now it sounds nice. Some people say they are slow, but they are still faster than most of the cars around.
People who complain that old cars are "slow" are missing the point. Sure, any modern family sedan probably will leave the 308 in the dust, but they have NO SOUL.
I'm soooooo pleased you fixed this yourself and didn't take the easy option like you suggested in your previous video (of taking it to Harry's garage) - I had every confidence in you that you'd solve this all by yourself and your smile says it all. Well done to you and your new moustache!
Congratulations Jack! I always said that the two most important tools in a mechanic's toolbox are patience and persistence. You have remained an optimistic trooper, and it is paying off.
Hi Jack - I finally have got my beetle to run properly after 6 months. Just got lucky, and decided to check the accelllerator pump and the small adjusting screw had come loose, and because it is out of sight i would never have known, and would never have seen, and it shouldn't be able to come loose anyway. So, the point of this boring bit of news to you, is we all just keep going and going looking for the cause of the poor running, and eventually you will get to where you want to be..!! It is actually after all the fun of the journey, and like you said " we are just amatuers" teaching ourselves new skills which is something to be so proud of. You are a Ferrari mechanic...!!
Well done Jack, and congratulations on finding the issues yourself, makes it even more rewarding.. Influenzo Up for sale soon ? sad to see her go! Hope the Lotus is getting better
Patience is a virtue Many would have cursed the car and thrown the towel in long before. Your persistence has payed off. Now you can really start to enjoy your Ferrari. Good job, really happy for you.👍👍
Well done Jack. Things are looking up with the Influenzo. Great looking car the 308. Hopefully you can start to enjoy this Italian Beauty at long last.
It's the little mistakes that take the longest time to find, but man there's no better feeling than that first test drive when it's running right. It sounds really good now.
My first time in a 308 was at a Ferrari Club day at a track here in Canada in 1986. I was a paramedic, and for insurance reasons, we needed to be on site. The members were very gracious to me, they could tell I was a Ferrari fan. At lunch time I had the opportunity to get a ride around the track with an IROC race driver. Absolutely amazing experience. The IROC guy hated the car, saying the IROC Camaros handled better. I couldn’t care what he thought, this was a Ferrari! I’ll never forget that day.
I never write comments on TH-cam but had to write to say well done for persevering and so pleased you have it sounding like a Ferrarri again. Well done Jack!
In NLP there's an understanding that there is no such thing as failure, only feedback & that's what I like about you & your video's..... you don't give up and work forward to success. Well done 👍
Really pleased you are almost there. Weber's are difficult to set up unless you are used to them, but there are still people around, not many now, who can help, as I have no doubt you know. These cars don't need to be driven fast to enjoy, a quiet country lane, 0730 on a weekend morning, roof off, and off you go.
Absolutely rapt for you that the beast is running so much better, Jack! I know from experience that chasing gremlins on a classic can be almost physically painful (and not only to the wallet!). I have learnt that after a significant win, it is best to just drive the car as it is for a while - even though there may be a niggle or two - because sometimes the remaining problems reduce in size either in actuality or in the grand scheme of the driving and overall enjoyment of the vehicle, to the point that hey are mere 'quirks' or 'characteristics' of that particular car. Sometimes they go away on their own and other times, with driving, things settle in and they present themselves in a way that is easier to diagnose when you aren't still all tied up in knots trying to figure it all out at once. My recommendation is to get out and about in the UK summer in the wee beasty and clock up some miles - and really put the smile back on your face and the happiness back in your heart for the beast. Leave the tinkering until the Autumn when the weather isn't so nice.....unless she suddenly tells you definitively what her issue is. All the very best, mate.
I’ve got the same DCNF Weber on my Ducati Paso. I couldn’t easily get the venturies out last time I cleaned it. I’ll keep this trap in mind next time I do! So glad your persistence has paid off 😁
