    ABOUT THE SOUND OF MUSIC
    Produced and directed by Robert Wise, and starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, with Richard Haydn and Eleanor Parker. The film is an adaptation of the 1959 Broadway musical of the same name, composed by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. The film's screenplay was written by Ernest Lehman, adapted from the stage musical's book by Lindsay and Crouse. Based on the memoir The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria von Trapp, the film is about a young Austrian woman studying to become a nun in Salzburg in 1938 who is sent to the villa of a retired naval officer and widower to be governess to his seven children. After bringing and teaching love and music into the lives of the family through kindness and patience, she marries the officer and together with the children they find a way to survive the loss of their homeland through courage and faith.
    The film was released on March 2, 1965 in the United States, initially as a limited roadshow theatrical release. Although critical response to the film was widely mixed, the film was a major commercial success, becoming the number one box office movie after four weeks, and the highest-grossing film of 1965. By November 1966, The Sound of Music had become the highest-grossing film of all-time-surpassing Gone with the Wind-and held that distinction for five years. The film was just as popular throughout the world, breaking previous box-office records in twenty-nine countries. Following an initial theatrical release that lasted four and a half years, and two successful re-releases, the film sold 283 million admissions worldwide and earned a total worldwide gross of $286,000,000.
    The Sound of Music received five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. The film also received two Golden Globe Awards, for Best Motion Picture and Best Actress, the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement, and the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Written American Musical. In 1998, the American Film Institute (AFI) listed The Sound of Music as the fifty-fifth greatest American movie of all time, and the fourth greatest movie musical. In 2001, the United States Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry, finding it "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
    ABOUT RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN
    After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (Composer, 1902-1979) and Oscar Hammerstein II (Librettist/Lyricist, 1895-1960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most successful partnership in American musical theater. Prior to joining forces, Rodgers collaborated with lyricist Lorenz Hart on musical comedies that epitomized wit and sophistication (Pal Joey, On Your Toes, Babes In Arms and more), while Hammerstein brought new life to operetta and created the classic Show Boat with Jerome Kern. Oklahoma!, the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, introduced an integrated form that became known as “the musical play.” Their shows that followed included Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music. Collectively, the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals have earned Tony, Oscar, Grammy, Emmy, Pulitzer, and Olivier Awards. The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization is a Concord Company, www.concord.com.

      I remember watching a behind the scenes things on the sound of music and they said the reason they did the scene in silhouette was cos it was one of the last scenes they shot and they were so tired after all the filming that they couldn't stop smiling and laughing so they had to dim the scene so you can't see their faces. Worked really well tho hey? One of my favourite scenes in any movie ever!

      Well, in the interest of accuracy, it's easy to fall in love with Captain Von Trapp as portrayed by Christopher Plummer! Being an actor is all about pretending to be someone who might be very different from who you really are. That said, I have a friend who used to be an actor and acting coach (probably more Method than Stanislavski) and he always says that if an actor cannot find anything to relate to and resonate with in the character, then the audience will not find the performance convincing.

    This scene was filmed in the dark because the carbon arc lights were burning out left and right. It had been a long day for everyone. They went ahead with a low light setting. It was originally to be filmed in bright light. It would have never gotten the results as this did.

    • @jojosmb
      @jojosmb 7 ปีที่แล้ว +101

      This is an explanation of that on imdb "When Maria and the Captain are at the gazebo, Julie Andrews couldn't stop laughing due to a lighting device that was making, in her words, a "raspberry" every time she leaned in to kiss Plummer. After more than 20 takes, the scene was altered to silhouette the two and to hide Andrews' giggles." :D

      HiddenShadowGirl I totally agree. It has absolutely nothing to do with size of a woman's booty, no matter how much silicon has been injected, no matter how many singers - male or female - sing about it, no matter how many magazines write about it, no matter how many advertisers take photos of it to sell a product. The only time the size of something matters, it's the size of a man's heart that counts. A man who gently tilts my head up with my chin and kisses me softly on my forehead does it every time. And don't do it all the time, just once in a while, and not as a precursor to sex either. Do it because you love her.. Unfortunately, it's apparent that either very few men know about this, or very few men really love a woman, because if they did, they'd do it. Back in the day, this is what made a woman swoon. I'd be willing to bet that very few people even know what swoon means. Thank God for movies like Sound of Music.

      Lizz Mebs Thanks Lizz! Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer shined in their portrayal of each others respective characters! I remember Julie mentioning in an interview that she did not want the movie to become saturated with a saccharine sentimentality that would leave a dry aftertaste in the viewer's mouth. The movie did just the opposite. It endeared us to each character. We were able to witness the conflicted emotions they often felt, the children who brought frolicking humor and laughter to each scene, the Captain who hid behind the veneer of his dictatorial presence and Maria who always called him out in oh so precious gem like spades! Their final coming together...well that's just all the cherries and strawberries atop anyone's vanilla iced cake!

      haha Courtney! Fantasy indeed! We are privileged to live vicariously through the eyes of onscreen romance until it blossoms in our own lives! It's no matter though. Elizabeth Barrett Browning did not find love until she was almost 40 but what an all consuming love story it was when it finally bloomed! And even if such a tale remains out of reach for some of us forever, we must remember that God is still good. His never failing, agape love endures forever! :D Be God Blessed!

    I played Maria in my high school musical and we had this piece taken out due to copyright reasons, according to the director. I auditioned as a joke/dare and was clumsy and stumbled upon my words out of shyness. To my surprise, I got the lead role. When I asked why, the judges said that my audition reminded them of the scene where Maria and the children fell off the boat. It was definitely a good experience, as I had always looked up to Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer..

      They DO exist, but it's very hard to get any traction or to find a counterpart when you have higher goals than to just get laid. I grew up with this movie, met JA backstage once. She patted my head and we shared a secret. I've been looking for someone like that my whole life. Met several women in my 62 years that may have had the potential, but alas, it was not fated to be. Women have changed more than men. There have always been cads, but never s many jaded, angry, insecure women.

      @@eakintunde84 A big part of the difficulty lies in the fact that the massive technological advances in Western society over the past one hundred and fifty years or so have triggered massive paradigm shifts at all levels of society because nothing exists in isolation and everything's connected. While paradigm shifts like these are unavoidable and in the long run necessary, they're unfortunately often quite uncomfortable. Most human beings have issues with change even if they see the inevitability, importance, necessity, and benefit of it because what is familiar at least has the virtue of being predictable and therefore we regard it as safe and comfortable even if it isn't actually all that healthy or beneficial.

    I love the imagery of the gazebo. If I remember right we see people in the gazebo twice. Once with Liesl, and what's his name. A love scene, though not true love. The kind of love hollywood usually calls real love. Two teens who swoon at merely telegrams, but her father doesn't like him, and he has to leave, but as I said before. It's not real love. This is the second time. Two grown ups talking about how they slipped and fell in love, and realizing that the other is flawed, but they love them anyway despite the situations playing themselves out around them. True love. The kind of love that people, adults and children, alike should be striving toward.

In that scene you can tell that her really does love maria. then look at the way he smiles with the Baronis or how ever you spell it. you can just see the difference between the two. just look at his smile throughout the movie ( when he does smile) you can see the difference between when he is happy to be with maria and the other woman. I LOVE THIS MOVIE SOOOOOO MUCH!!!! AND THIS IS MY FAVORITE SCENE ALONG WITH THE DANCING SCENE.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
