Great review Jonny I agree with you it's a great start and the price is well worth it and better than dropping the big money right away on an ATN that can be a later purchase. Cheers brother
Great review of what seems like a very good product. If I may, can I add a bit about 18650 cells? NEVER carry these cells loose in a pocket or bag. They were never designed or intended for use outside pre-assembled and protected battery packs for cordless devices, electric vehicles and mass-energy storage applications like solar and wind farms. Remember the rash of exploding laptops and vaping devices (and even Boeing 787s) a few years back? Incorrectly used cells are the cause. Out of a charger, battery pack, hard case or device, the battery's sole aim in life is to find the coin or key (or even a rivet or zipper that holds it closed) that you forgot was in your pocket and grind against it until it shorts out. You do NOT want that to happen anywhere near you! Think of having a lit blowtorch on your pocket! The fumes and leaks are toxic, too. Samsung make cells up to a claimed 3,500mAh (the 35E) - make sure you get the right type, as they are available in flat-top or button-top. Sony actually sold their entire battery business to Murata a couple of years back and their highest capacity model is currently the VTC6 at 3,000mAh. The same button/flat warning applies. LG have the M36 (flat top) at 3,600mAh or the MJ1 (button top) at 3,500mAh. Panasonic has the NCRB 18650 (button top) and NCR18650B (flat top) at 3,400mAh. Sanyo has the GA 3500mAh in button top. The highest genuine capacity currently available from the only reputable manufacturer that does actually approve their use outside pre-assembled packs (because they use a slightly thicker wrap, so check for fit) is the Molicel M35A (3,500mAh), and I've only found it in the UK at their UK distributor, Fogstar. They sell both wholesale (over £75) and retail, and for retail, supply all cells in a hard case. I have a slightly fancier one that clips to a belt or bag which is handy, but I got it at a trade show and don't know where you can buy them. Postage is free over £20 order, last time I checked, and they ship the same day if you order by 3pm. Always check the wraps any time the cell is being moved between device, case or charger (you'll want one if you have several cells, and Fogstar also sells a range of them) and NEVER use a cell with a damaged wrap. You can re-wrap and the correct size of shrink-wrap is readily available, and directions on safe re-wrapping can be found online. You may not have heard of Molicel, but they actually invented the Li-Ion battery. Other reputable brands are LG, Sanyo, Panasonic and Samsung. YDL are reasonably consistent, others are re-wraps or unknowns and fakes abound, so be careful what you buy, and for goodness sake, look after them properly. I bet they tested life when daytime spotting with no recording! Using the IR light, laser or recording would all reduce battery life. I have no connection with any of the companies mentioned, other than as a satisfied customer of Sony/Murata, Samsung, Sanyo, Molicel and Fogstar.
Yep you should always use an external charger for these type of batteries never charge them via a USB as alot of the onboard protection to prevent overcharge doesn't always work and you risk your device bursting into flames why charging so worth buying an external charger.
Cheers Brian. For the money, it's wicked! I do like conventional/glass scopes for long range shooting. You just can't beat that. The X Sight is great but not a patch on glass. The NV 100 just clicks on and you get all those benefits PLUS, the recording abilities. Awesome!
