Why would the D.A. prosecute him? It's clear to anyone with common sense that this was a U Haul error. A rental car I drove to Las Vegas was ticketed for expired California tags. For some reason the vehicle wasn't towed. These rental car companies should be liable corporate negligence. After all corporations are people too!

They're legal fictions, you have to go after the man or woman who has ownership title. You can't sue a fictitious entity because everything is leased that's attached to the corporation, but you can be compensated by the man who holds title.

My daughter rented a U-Haul truck to move to another city two hours from the city she was living in. She and her friends loaded the truck, she drove to the new residence and had contractors help her unload and move everything in and she called it a day. At 9pm U-Haul phoned her and told her they needed their truck back in the city where she rented it. Her agreement had her returning it the next day but they insisted that wasn't true and would be charging her an additional rental fee and a late fee. Since she was planning on returning the next day anyway she hopped in the truck and drove it back that night just to get them off her back. That's one customer they will never see again and hopefully others because she shares the story.

They did get compensated for this. The attorney settled out of court for about six figures. The company had to wake up and smell the cow manure, and whoever installed the licence plate did not do the job properly. I worked at rental car agency and when a car got the plates, I was told to install it on a particular vehicle. A stolen licence plate goes like this. A criminal would go to a dealership, an automobile dismantler, wrecking or salvage yard. Take the plate off the car, put it on a stolen car, and commit a crime. When they are finished with the car. They would abandon the car or take the licence plate off the car and throw them away in trash can only to be in the hands of a souvenir hunter.

They let me go.
These cops just wanted to arrest someone and knew by looking at them that they couldn’t fight it. It sucks that he lost the job over this. I’ve been there. We had a whole new life set up, old historic house with a full attic, new car, and a trade job with a livable wage. We lost it all over stupid bull and the system just wouldn’t leave us alone. I will never rent from U-Haul Again... My story didn't end as poorly as this but did cause me a lot of time to sort out. I rented a truck, drove it less than 25 miles and returned it, when I got to the person to return it he said to leave the key in it... So I did. Well another customer took the truck (I guess the wrong truck) for 3 days and I got a charge on my card several days later for near 800 bucks. Took 4-5 hours on the phone to sort it out... and I don't think I would have, had I not kept calling back to talk to someone who could do something about it. Of course the reimbursement takes 3-5 business days... in that time I got ANOTHER charge... for tolls this time... The person who took the truck and used it for 3 days... racked up nearly 200 bucks in tolls. So I had to repeat the process to get that money back. I cant recall the lady who helped me, but she offered a discount code or something (Icant recall the exact offer) to me as a courtesy, I told her thank you for all your help, but I will never rent from your company again after this.

I find that stolen grocery carts work well, because you can just dump them wherever when you are done. If you need help, a good insider tip is to manipulate nice old ladies into doing the lion's share of the manual labor. Old ladies are desperate for attention and would prefer indentured servitude to another lonely day spent watching reruns of Pimp My Ride. Post menopausal women are all good targets, and if they aren't too too old then they might want to get hot and heavy in their bedrooms which are always nice especially because they usually have high thread count linens. The real jackpot is if they aren't too ugly and if you aren't ugly then these are ripe conditions for a mediocre old lady actually paying YOU for sensual favors - and that's on top of them hauling your stuff across town or across states/regions in ratched old stolen grocery carts. Hope these alternatives are helpful!

When I was young and mostly living on the road I worked for a car rental company for a few months just cleaning cars when they were returned. It was pretty common for cars to turn up with missing or swapped plates as well as finding paraphernalia, drugs, drug residue, spent shell casings and sometimes a loaded gun or live ammo. All things that could get someone wrongfully arrested. When I rent any vehicle I look it over good before accepting it. I make sure all the numbers on my contract and registration match the make and model, VIN and plates. I look it over for damage, make sure all the lights work properly and inspect the insides and all compartments carefully for any signs of it being used for transporting contraband including under the seats and popping the rear seat out to inspect under it.

    • @ronnieking3848

In Texas, an employee that rented the vehicle has to file an affidavit in person at the police department. That employee has to list everyone in their household and swear out that they were not involved with the theft. It's very annoying and easier to just get it repo'd. I worked in car rental for over 5 years and only had to do it once. I had customers call and say, hey your car is going to be here in Louisiana, etc. when they hadn't rented for a one way. The smart thing to do is to work with other rental companies to get your car back. Sometimes we asked them to drive our car one way to pick up one of their cars. Hertz are asses.

Absolutely atrocious that you were blamed. I guess the next lowest on the corporate ladder was away that day, so you became the target. What's the point of having management positions if managers aren't held responsible for errors, but you are? And what's with the union? Doesn't it defy logic that as a bagger, you weren't outside directing trailer hook-ups? Your situation is unbelievable and absolutely appalling. I hope your exam went ok, and that you were able to land a better job. It's in such extreme situations that I really wish I had pursued a law degree, as I would have focused on people who experienced injustices like you suffered.

And they only offered a settlement of $3,500 and apparently threw away the contents of the truck? SHAMEFUL!! And the woman's mother's cremated remains are lost forever? That is severely messed up!! From personal experience, U-Haul has gone so far into the gutter and they take no responsibility. The U-Haul employees DON'T check their vehicles. They make the customer do the inspection. My last experience they detained me an hour at rental time and I returned 15 minutes before closing (I would've been earlier if they hadn't detained me at rental time....that was a scheduled appt I must add.,). Fifteen minutes before closing and they refused to check me out. They pointed to a website sign on the exterior of the building and locked the doors and left me alone in the dark in a highly dangerous part of town. Their website wasn't working, my phone battery was dying and the 800 phone # had an hour wait.

For about a year and a half the place I worked at rented UHaul trucks and equipment.
The regional office started to HATE when I would call, because every time there was an equipment defect, I let them know. If it was safety equipment, I put in a repair ticket, even for a single marker light.
I would check tire tread depth, fluid levels, seat belt wear, fluid leaks, glass cracks, emissions inspection stickers, and make sure that plates matched the paperwork.
When someone rented a truck, I would do the pre-rental inspection WITH them, noting all existing damage and deficiencies down to shallow scratches.
The traveling repair techs told me they got paid time AND mileage, so they didn't care how many calls I made. But the suits hated me.
Oddly enough, we stopped renting UHaul equipment after that year and a half.

It’s sad that they don’t understand how this should’ve been handled. One, he should’ve taken it to court and never pleaded no contest. Two, they could bring very large lawsuits against U-Haul and the District Attorney’s Office. They can also bring a suit against the towing company that stored the vehicle for the loss of their goods. The liability associated with this whole scenario could keep their entire family set for life. Not to mention that they could also pursue fraud charges for her signature being forged on a legal document, and potentially have a secondary lawsuit against the storage company for the loss of the financial records that compromise their personal financial data.

This report is bogus in blaming Uhaul for the problem. These people were victims of a thief who stole a truck and swapped out the plate. They also caused their problem by not having their rental contract on hand to show proof that they had rented the truck. Also the police could have contacted Uhaul to verify the claim that the couple were in legal possession of the truck. People want to blame a company instead of taking responsibility.

My daughter and her husband rented a U-Haul to move house. They stopped at my house to get me to follow them to the return location. The U-haul wouldn't restart. We tried the usual things to get it going again without success. They called U-Haul to explain the situation. U-Haul sent a wrecker to pick up the truck. Her husband signed the paperwork the wrecker driver had from U-Haul and assumed all was well. About 5 months later, they were pulled over for speeding (in a local speed trap). After running her husband's name, it returned with a grand theft warrant. U-Haul reported the truck stolen. He was arrested. This left my daughter and her newborn stranded on the side of the road in the middle of winter. We picked them up and drove the car back home. I remembered the tow company that picked up the truck and contacted them. They faxed me their info, including the U-Haul employee who signed the truck's return. My daughter and I took the original paperwork to a different U-Haul location and had them search for the truck. It was currently rented out. So my son-in-law was sitting in jail for a truck he didn't steal while some unsuspecting person was driving a "stolen" truck. It took months to get it all cleared up and they never received anything remotely resembling an apology.

The store didn't open until 12pm, so upon opening, they noticed a missing trailer, looked at video from the early morning, and even though the tag was seen and the reservation was valid, they reported it stolen. We were able to rectify the issue before my husband got pulled over, but imagine if we had not. They are jot connected the way you think. They do not cross reference reservations from online or competing stores. It is an issue that should definitely be looked at. I'll try a different moving truck company in the future. Too much threat of wrongful conviction for theft.
