- Huey talks about the new musical based on his body of work “The Heart of Rock & Roll” opening on Broadway, being part of the new Netflix documentary “The Greatest Night in Pop” about the making of We Are the World, being informed at the last minute about having to sing a solo, never recording a song that Bob Dylan wrote specifically for him and sent to him, what made him start playing harmonica, and his music inspirations.

How can you NOT love Huey Lewis.
Jimmy speaking with added volume, tight enunciation and looking directly at HL is very courteous.
You can tell how much Jimmy reveres Huey, he has that extra glint in his eye and step in his voice, lol.
Agreed. It takes practice to deal with someone with this problem, you tend to start out loud and focused, then slip back to "usual" speaking.
@@bkm2797I remember Jimmy saying that in high school he was obsessed with Huey Lewis and Lionel Richie. Must be amazing to become friends with your heroes
HoxtonVox,
Yes, it must especially such an all around nice talented guy like Huey.

I love Huey. He is one of my all time favorite singers. The News is a truly an iconic group that is part of history !!
@@Soulfulvision1111 I know he used to live in the Bitterroot Valley; I don’t know if he still does or not. Glad to hear you had such good times, stay healthy and keep on remembering… It’s all we have after these people leave us. Wishing everyone a healthy and prosperous ‘rest of our lives’.😎
@@davidthompson7817 He has a place there; he will just suddenly turn up to go trout fly fishing.
He lived in Ross Kentfield Marin County California next door to my high school sweetheart
The “The Greatest Night in Pop” documentary was surprisingly enjoyable, I didn't expect to learn so many interesting and emotional details about that iconic 1980s moment. And Huey Lewis was indeed the "underdog hero" in the documentary 🙂
from the bottom of my heart ill NEVER forget your contribution to "we are the world" thank YOU Huey !!!!!!
why not in the rock n roll hall of fame?
@@christopherallen9580 Cause he's all but a one-hit wonder.
Huey Lewis and the News album ' Sports' is 7x platinum, they have 12 top ten hits, and 3 #1 hits. Yep definitely sounds like a 1 hit wonder.
I love comments from people who don't know what they are talking about.😂😂😂
Saw him at Red Rocks in the ‘80s and was blown away by his harmonica playing. He has so many great songs.
I just can’t forget Mr.hue Luis in the news ,80’s bebe
One of the most iconic voices of the 80s!
He looks great! Hard to believe he turns 74 this year!
May he have many more years and May a miracle cure his condition. A truly great human. 🙏
So humble. So adorable. So talented. So Huey. And that wonderfully gravelly voice ... just listening to him talk is like a prelude to a tune. 💖
“I’m afraid you’re just too darn loud”.
I love Huet Lewis!
The news is cool, too.
I listened to Huey & the News growing up. I’ve successfully passed along an appreciation for their music to a couple of my sons. My work is now complete. 🤟🏼
To my niece and nephew, it was fairly "safe" music to play in the car when they were along
Great memories of the 80s thanks to Huey Lewis
Huey Lewis and the News - Do you believe in love
Such a great song and harmony typical of the 80s
His life story needs to be a netflix series. Look it up, it's bonkers level amazing.
It's an incredible story.
Gosh, watching that clip from we are the world makes me feel really old 😅. Hueys voice still sounds strong. This was an awesome episode of Jimmy Kimmel.
Have always loved Huey Lewis and all the great songs he provided. Such a great talent and man.
I have such great memories of Huey Lewis' wonderful videos on MTV back in the day.
💯 same 😊
Dancing to his music got me through my divorce! Thank you to Huey!

I used to go see Huey and the boys in a 100-seat club in Palo Alto when they were just getting started. Great shows, and great memories.
Thanks for having Huey Lewis as a guest Jimmy …….❤❤❤❤❤❤ What a career and talent 🙌🏻👏🏻🥰
I’ve been a fan since I was twelve years old back in 1982. I finally got to see them play live in 1991. Best two hours of my life so far. No joke.
He was just great in that documentary and the documentary was amazing. What a moment in time, what a night, what a stroke of genius to get everybody there, get it all sorted out, amazing. Gives me goosebumps every time I watch it !!
I've always liked Huey, especially since his music is attached to one of my all time favorite movies, BTTF. He comes across as a down to earth sweet dude and it saddens me he's having the hearing issues. As nervous as he says he was I can't imagine "We Are The World" without him.
Saw Huey Lewis in concert twice in the last few years. Great show! You could tell he loved to perform.
Jimmy did really well opening his guest up in this interview.
I absolutely loved every song Huey Lewis & The News put out. I had to 💃. Thank you I loved this clip.
Nice to see Huey… he looks great… hope the show is a big success for him… good luck 🍀

I was lucky enough to see him and the band perform the year before he was diagnosed and had to stop touring. One of the greatest concerts I've ever seen - the man and his bandmates are true showmen!
John Pierce (bass) is out with TOTO now. He and Steve Lukather have been pals ever since they were born.
Walking On A Thin Line is a favorite!
So glad to see Huey put the puck down to hear better!
Hewy always brings us the only News we need to hear.
Who is this 'Hewy'?

Huey.
I'm 50, and listening to my first song of his never left my mind and heart!❤😊
Watching this reminds me of how old I'm getting, I want my MTV back.
Right!?
I wish I could go fishing with Kimmel and Huey.
Shweet!! Love you bud. My whole 80s and life. No joke.
I love Huey Lewis - was lucky to catch him at Springfest weekend in NYS in the 80's...he was phenomenal live....you could tell he loved it!!! At least I DID get to see him perform live so I have no regrets. Great memories and this was a great interview Jimmy!!! THANKS!!
I could listen to listen to Huey’s awesome stories all day long. Thank you sir for all the good memories.
Still beatin'... in Cleveland.
I first encountered Huey as the harpist for the band Clover WAY back when! It was $1 on Monday nights to get into this small dive in San Anselmo CA. PRICELESS
I remember that, was it Joe's?
He's a likable guy.
Always rewarding to hear from the great man.
I miss Huey Lewis, he seems like such a great guy. So fun to see him with Jimmy, a true fan.
Love this ,hes still a dream boat
Many good times listening to Huey and the News😊.
*Wow, what an interview!*
WATCH the video of Huey Lewis and the News, with the Tower of Power horns. Incredible
I am a long time fan of Huey. Love his music, wish I could see the new productions. Thanks for having him on the show, Jimmy.❤
Great interview! Huey is so warm and genuine! Definitely one of my favorite singers!
Damn that was a good interview 🙏🏼
I always enjoyed see Huey Lewis & the News doing the anthem at Candlestick Park for 49ers games.
Huey Lewis and the News was the first video my kids and I watched on Friday nights on ABC back in the 80’s I believe! I always had a place in my heart for Huey and his music!
As a kid who started seeing concerts in the 70s I've seen my share of great concerts & Huey Lewis and the news was right up there with the best shows I've ever seen. The best bands always sound as good if not better live as they do on their records. You always got your money's worth and it was always a great live concert to go see. I'll never forget one of those shows when they played the boys are back in town Everyone was going nuts I also used to love when they would do the star-spangled banner at baseball games & other sporting events. One of the greatest bands of all time and their music is timeless. So happy to see them be recognized on this level. The Heart of Rock and roll is still beating❤ God bless you Huey & God bless the News!
His band Clover actually played on Elvis Costello's first record.
I was around a lot of famous ball players in my day, but I count that I met Huey, even though I really didn’t. Pre 9/11 you could walk with your spouse to the gate, which I did one time with the kids at O’Hare. I was walking out with them in the stroller and we turned a blind corner and bumped right into Huey. I just said, Huey! To which he replied, Hey man, and kept going. I just loved his music and style.
Huey- you were great in “We are the World” - the 3 of you together was the best part of the song!
I worked for a celebrity for over 11 years and met many famous people not only through that job, but also outside of it. I think Huey is one of the few people I would actually feel star struck if I met them. I might cry.
Love the '80 ❤ and Huey ....and you Show Jimmy ❤ .
Met Huey in Boston, when he sang the Nation Anthem.
Huey's first Gold Album hangs on the wall behind the bar at the 2 AM Club, Mill Valley CA. It's where they filmed their first music video.

@@Soulfulvision1111 The 2 AM Club is still there. I believe the Gold Album is still there too.
this interview is GOLD.
Honestly surprised that he is one of the few of the older musicians with serious hearing loss . With performing you’d think lots more of them would . Always enjoyed his music nice to see he’s popular again 😊
He has hearing loss because he has an autoimmune disease called Meniere's Disease, which is a disease of the inner ear. In addition to hearing loss, it causes chronic tinnitus(ringing) in the ears and debilitating vertigo. It's a horrible disease and is why he stopped performing.
Seems that it's not just a health problem for older heavy metal group members. Like guitarists from KiSS, Slayer etc
One of the most talented singers ever. What a true injustice for him to suffer from a disease that destroys his ability to share his talent.
Huey Lewis has so much talent it’s not even funny!!! He can do it all.
I really enjoyed Huey Lewis music in the 1980's. I had all his Lps played them on my SLQX300 Technics direct drive turntable. Hooked up to a Yamaha A-780 integrated magnetic field amplifier playing on a pair of JBL Professional JBL 4311WX Control Monitors incredible life like speakers the next best thing to being there live in your room. Sounds great at 1 watt or 150 watt peaks. With this sound system I can say I love Rock and Roll to Huey and the rest of my 420 LPs, 1,500 CDs and other music media. Great sound, great music, great times. Keep on Rocking on with great music everyone.
Hometown boy does good. From The City to Marin Co. You've always made us proud.
Caught him twice in the mid-to-late 1980s, with the News backed by the Tower of Power. Just phenomenal music, high-energy Grade A entertainment.
Great interview. I love Huey. Jimmy was on point and funny.
In 2001, my new hubby and I were flying back from our honeymoon in Acapulco. The airplane was full in coach, but First Class had extra room. The flight attendant came over and asked if one of us would like to move to First Class. Hubby used to fly First and Business class for his job so I jumped up. Like I wouldn't.
When I sat down in my new comfy seat I looked to my left and there was Huey, smiling. He introduced himself and then introduced the News. They were all so down to earth yet so cool. It was cool. The whole thing was cool. I thought I'd feel intimidated because they were famous. I was at first, but after a glass of champagne that went away.
Huey introduced himself to my husband after landing and we talked a few minutes more before he had to go.
Huey and the News will forever be...🎶 too hip to be square 🎶to us.
Love Huey and the boys! Seen them several times in different cities since the early 80's!
His solo in "We Are the World" is my favorite part of the song.
Legend. GOAT.
That's Joe Strummer The Lead Singer from The CLASH!
I also have hearing loss and a lot of balance issues because of Meniere's disease so it's inspiring to see Huey still kicking it in the entertainment industry. He was my first concert experience too!
So tragic what happened to him. To be so high in your musical career and then lose your hearing. I'm glad he's found his new path.
I saw Huey Lewis & the News play in Potsdam college, NY (Super small town, near Canada) in January 1984. It was announced in December 1983 (right before Christmas break) and never heard who he was before, and also that whole Christmas break. He went from (nationally) unknown to a super star! But they were still booked at the small colleges as I got to see him playing at 1,000 seat venue. And just a couple months after that, he was selling out large venue halls.
I played in a charity softball game with these guys in 1987 in Boston lol
Love this guy & his music
Happy Music Huey. He came around when music and musicians were the best in history. He was still unique and talented enough to stand out, get a lot of listens. Plus it was great dating music. I think it helped me a time or two. Thanks Huey!
I love their friendship.
I feel like I conjured Huey!! I had been thinking about him in the past couple of days, and there he is!!
I was at Fox Theater in Atlanta with one of the first renditions. Many years ago and Huey invited my friends.
Jammin' on the organ with Bob van Camp? 😂

From Ireland 🇮🇪 I absolutely LOVE Huey ❤ Saw all of his Irish gigs including his generous Phil Lynnot appearance ❤ What a band and what a man !
I met his sax player (Johnny?) backstage in Anchorage in 1983.
My family has ALWAYS enjoyed his music !!!
So happy for him on his recording venture!
One of my favorites!!
5:20 turned out to be the best part of the song.
Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor. In '87, Huey released this; Fore!, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip To Be Square". A song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends. It's also a personal statement about the band itself. Hey, Paul!...
lol
He’s awesome
A Great man.
I met Huey twice. Early 90's and again in 2013. Such a great, humble, normal guy.
Great Interview Jimmy.
I wish that during this interview, Huey and Jimmy would have talked about and raised more awareness about the ear related autoimmune disease that Huey suffers from called Meniere's Disease. Invisible disability that has drastically affected his life and the lives of so many people. I wonder what device he was using to assist him with hearing?

Huey Lewis has been fitted with the most progressive, technologically
advanced, Starkey Australia hearing devices:
His is the Livio Edge AI,

I am an athletic stage-4 cancer survivor (since May, 2021 ~ official no-evidence disease) and I've had 3 folks, thus far, that don't believe I had that diagnosis.
(They never saw me during surgery chemos, and radiation...they see healthy me, only.)
I, therefore, too, have an invisible disease. Happy that you typed about Huey's sufferings. He spoke to Jimmy in detail, about his health, the last time they were together. 💞

Great singer, great interviewee, and great lesson to protect your hearing. I still have most of mine, but I should have always had earplugs and/or headphones handy. There's a lot of loud stuff out there: Concerts and clubs, power tools (including the mundane things like vacuum cleaners), and believe it or not... babies! A crying baby is as louder than a motorcycle (and nearly as loud as a jet engine), and you have to be in close range. I didn't think to wear earplugs until my first kid was already over a year old, but it made a huge difference when I started using them. Saved my hearing, but it also changed my parenting style. It doesn't feel like a crisis when you block out the screaming. I mean, seriously kid. It's just a diaper change! Point is, there are a lot of good reasons to invest in some earplugs: Some in the short term, but especially when you're older and have saved your hearing to enjoy in your retirement.
Huey got a ton of great songs
I’m not a big fan of Jimmy, but this is probably the best interview I have seen on late night in a while. At first, Huey gives short answers and Kimmel fires back with the next question. Then Lewis expands on his answers and Kimmel doesn’t interrupt.
If this interview was rehearsed, then all interviews should be.
Went to see Huey Lewis and news in concert in Dublins point depot back in the late 80s early 90s best concert I was ever at
I'm assuming it was during his stay in London was where he and his band, Clover met Elvis Costello. They were the back-up band on Elvis's 1st album. 😎

My late sister saw Huey before they made it big. She came home and told me she just heard this band and they were going to be big.
But he did so great for his part of we are the world!!
Agreed! As talented as Prince was, I doubt his line would have been any better than how Huey sang it.
