Great summary and well delivered. The only option I went with for my Y was FSD so I’m stuck with the Gemini’s. As you noted, I’m one of those that removes covers for around town and put them on for road trips. I just picked up some flex spray paint to make the covers all black. There are a few videos out there where owners have done that with good results, IMO. Keep up the videos. You’ve got a knack for it.
That’s awesome! Was the flex paint hard? I’ve seen plastidip kits, haven’t tried it yet myself. Definitely a future project video. And thank you very much 👍👍

It sounds like 19 inch wheels are the best when it comes to durability, longitivtiy, range, curbing, (basically everything but looks). Why cant tesla just make 19 inch look better?
FYI for a future video, you should let people know they are limited on what they can buy for winter tire packages based on what variant they get, and what factory tire/wheel package they choose. IE if you get the performance edition of the M3 or MY, you have to get the performance winter tire package. The brake calipers are too big to fit in the 20 or 19” wheels :)

I would think winter driving could factor in too… smaller wheels give you more control in slippery conditions, so if you went with the larger wheels you would need to downsize for winter anyway.
Depending on the rubber compound and how many 32nds depends on how long the tires are going to last. Just because you have more rubber on a 19 wheel vs a 21” wheel doesn’t mean the tires are going to last longer.
True! I went by averages here, but factors can vary a lot. If you asked me to pick who would need new tires first: a grandmother on 21” wheels vs. a guy in his 20’s on 19” wheels, I think I’d pick the guy.
I got the Model Y midnight silver metallic with the 19' gemini wheels. I got them because I wanted the wheels with the best range and versatility. And also, I think they look the best :)
My wheel? Gemini mainly for range. But if it looks wrong then I'll pop it off and see how that looks. Clearly I don't have the car yet so time will tell. Thanks for the explanation and stay safe and enjoy.
Your analogy truly helped me to decide which wheels to get on my Model Y. The best video yet with the pros and cons! And I've looked at A LOT of videos! Thank you!
I'm going for efficiency! Black rims aren't a favorite.... more of a masculine appeal for me. Your detailed analogy really helped me decide. Thanks again.
I'm keeping the 19" Gemini wheels that come standard on the car. I like the fact I can take the cover off, too, and show chrome/silver. With the 20" wheels, which are black, and since I chose black for the color of my car, there's no color contrast. (Hate I don't have the option to keep the chrome around the windows.) I test drove the MY with the 20" wheels and it wasn't as smooth a ride BUT it was on "sport mode". When I changed to the "comfort mode", it was a smoother ride. I'm keeping the 19" standard wheel for efficiency.
For winter tires I bought 19” Martian wheels because I saved 8 1/2 lbs. of unsprung weight /wheel. I use the Gemini wheels in summer, but the induction wheels do look great. Great article, thanks. WBJ
Brandon, one comment if I may on an otherwise excellent video (as usual); the amount of rubber to wear our is the same. Another important point is comfort, the higher side the wheel has, the better damping it offers… considering MY is a bit stiff, 19” Gemini help a little bit. Keep the good work and thanks for your videos 👍
I was considering the performance model Y with the 21’’ Uberturbine wheels until I saw your video! We do road trips. I think I’ll go with induction instead. Thank you for your help.
I worked in the tire industry for a few years and the Higher profile sidewall does not mean there is more rubber or that the tire last longer. How long a tire last has more to do with the compound of the rubber.
@@BrandonDriver I enjoyed your video. It was excellent information. Since Lower profile tires tend to be more performance oriented they also tend to be of softer compounds with lower tread wear ratings. Higher profile tires, generally, are more comfortable on road because of the extra “cushion” the tire sidewall gives you and are often of a harder compound and higher treat wear rating.
Thank you so much for this video. I love the way you presented everything in such a clear and concise manner. I am getting my LR MY in about 1 1/2 weeks. I was so sure that I was going to get some aftermarket wheels (martians) since they're lighter and stronger (fully forged) etc. But I've been hearing a few things lately which is making me reconsider and is confusing me. So first of all I don't mind some range loss as long as it's not a lottt. Kinda a function over form guy but I don't mind sacrificing a little function if I can get some super cool looks. 1) Even though the the 21's are heavier etc people are saying that Tesla designed them to be so efficient aerodynamically that they actually get better range than some aftermarket wheels that are lighter. So for ex the 21 uberturbines use as much kw/h as some fully forged aftermarket 20's that are also so much lighter. By that token I am wondering if the Tsport uberturbine looking wheels in 19 or 20 would be better than other aftermarkets and the inductions since they are about the same weight as the gemini's and also have that aerodynamically efficient design 2) Apparently the Gemini's without the covers are about as efficient as the 20's because they lose the aerodynamic advantage. So all in all I don't know. Would it be better to just get aftermarket 20's like the Martians since you get a good amount of sidewall and they are lighter. Or would it be better to get the Tsportline uberturbine looking wheels in 20's since they might be as efficient as the Gemini's for range? Thank you.
Great question, Dr. Benjamin. Congratulations on your order! Shoot me an email if you’d like a delivery checklist, or if you’d like to hop on a quick call to go over this in a little deeper detail. 1. One of the disadvantages of going with 3rd-party wheels is the lack of warranty and sometimes serviceability from Tesla on them. It takes away a little further from the function over form ideology (which I belong to as well) and may help in your decision. 2. This is correct, the Geminis do lose range when the covers are off. TSportline and any other 3rd-party wheel maker that targets Teslas will specifically make them to compete with the default Tesla options. They should have the specs on the site, or you should be able to get a TSportline tech on the line to ask about each model. I should make a video about these in the future, I’d love to go visit TSportline!
I'm going Gemini wheels and plastidipping them. As much as I want my car to look super nice, I want to ensure I get the best ride quality and that means 19s.
Thanks for this video. It was throughly informative and I enjoyed it. I'm now even more stressed though lol. I'm ordering a Model Y LR soon. I love the 20's Induction wheel, I find it to be immensely sexy, however, I don't want to pay an additional $2000.00 + on wheels for an already expensive car. Also, I want the maximum range possible. So I'm stressed lol
I believe almost every explanation you gave about why so and so for the gemini wheels was wrong, but the results was right. Lol from what I know, the gemini wheels come with harder rubber tires, which is why they last the longest and are more efficient. More sidewall doesn't increase the life of the tires. The gemini wheels get a bit less acceleration because of the hardness of the rubber, which provides less traction. The performance tires are softer rubber, which also means higher rolling resistance, hence the lower range, that and the lack of the hubcaps that make them more aerodynamic. The added sidewall of the gemini also allows for harder rubber to be used because then the sidewall can absorb more impact to make up for the difference. I honestly don't see any benefit to the other wheels other than looks, so if that's what you're going for, you can sell the geminis and buy aftermarket for cheaper than the upgrade cost.
I’d love to learn more, where did you find your info about the harder rubber? And totally willing to admit when I’m wrong, my goal is to help people as best I can. And I agree with your last statement, lots of good aftermarket options out there.
@@BrandonDriver not too sure with the 19" vs 20", but usually more sporty low profile tires are softer rubber for more grip. The lack of flex in the sidewalls usually makes it necessary for more deformation with sudden changes in acceleration.
@@BrandonDriver other downside to the performance model is the front and back tires/wheels are different sizes, so you can only rotate the sides the tires are on. Tesla actually makes the wheel/tire info available on their website, but TH-cam is too sensitive for me to even say where...
You mentioned the 21” rims have the best grip for torque. So let’s say you bought the MYP and put 19” Gemini’s on. A Frankenstein Tesla of sorts. If you floor it from a stop would the those geminis skip or do something funky? I’ve heard of people getting the MYP then buying the geminis for comfort and range. @@BrandonDriver Will do. I tagged you in a photo of the current wrapped geminis. You can see more of the car on the "Incognito wraps" site (the company what wrapped it) by searching "Tesla Model Y - Brushed Sunset Shift". It came out nice. Worth the price I think!
Low profile tires don't wear faster because there's "less rubber". If they do wear faster, it's likely because they tend to be made with softer/stickier rubber. Also, low profile tires will get your rims banged or damaged in high-pothole areas.
Great review! Short, concise and to the point. I personally chose the Gemini for the extra range and just to save on long term cost. My next one is gonna be the model S which I'm gonna go all in on that bad boi haha.
Thank you for this video. I am waiting for my ordered 2021 model Y in blue with the induction wheels. Since I’ve ordered it I have been a little apprehensive on getting these wheels. But I honestly thought that they looked better than the others! Your video help me feel much better about my choice. Thanks again.
i just ordered the exact same combo. the aesthetic is so fire for me its worth the slight extra cost in the long run especially when the price of the car is kind of cheap for what you get. :)
I ordered my model Y with the 20” wheels and my brother thinks I should change it. 😰 But I like the look of these wheels the best. I think it’s ok to lose a little bit of range. But I am debating if I should edit my order because I will be driving in ice and snow during the winter months. I welcome anyone’s opinion if you care to share. Thank you!
Great content! I had a LR M Y on order but test drive the Performance version yesterday and updated my order for the M Y P. I test drove the M 3 P a while back and wanted the P all along but given I live in MA, the Gemini wheels would be more practical along with not having the car lowered by an inch. Tough decision but I’ve committed to the P and plan on replacing the 21inch Uberturbine wheels with the Gemini wheels coupled with an off road/winter tire. Any insight on why Tesla won’t let you choose the wheel configuration within limits of course? Thanks BTW, Nice shout out to KBHD!
Congratulations on your upgrade! I think they're particular about the Performance getting the best wheels for the extra torque. I would probably do something similar as to what you're thinking of, but I have heard of smaller wheels skipping and not gripping the road properly on Performance cars.
Cheap standard rims, WHY because it feels less bumpy and when it is time to change tires they are not expensive as others. I am driving to work at list 100 miles per day.
Can you tell any difference it the quality of the ride of the Y depending on the tire? Does the 19" create a softer ride due to more rubber and perhaps more air?
It does! It's subtle, I personally haven't noticed enough of a difference that I would mind, but it is there. The 19" will have a slightly softer ride.
Model Y long range AWS with 19" Gemini's. I want to change the wheels to aftermarket Induction or Uberturbine look-a-alike. Which ones have the best efficiency?
Great question! The Tesla Geminis are more efficient, but build may be different if you’re going with a 3rd-party lookalike. Ask them when you’re shopping for the rims, they’ll tell you all about efficiency and build.
@@BrandonDriver Thanks so much Brandon. If I stay with the 19 Gemini's but I would prefer them to be black as the car will be. What would be better? Powder Coating, plastic dipping, or painting the wheels and hubcaps.
@@michaelrubin408 powder coating is the highest quality option of the three. Plasti dip is often easier to remove, so you might consider that route if you may want different colors later.
Im about to move into a LR AWD Model Y full time and put K02 all terrain tires on it for backcountry fire roads in canada, Do you have any thoughts on living in a model y in canada full time where winters can get as low as 14 degrees Fahrenheit? Would the heat pump still keep me from turning into an icepop at night?
This is so cool!! My air conditioning went out for a couple days this summer where it was almost 45-50 degrees Celsius, and I went and slept and worked in my car until it was fixed. Way more comfortable than I expected in my Model 3, I can only assume the Model Y will be way better. The heat pump will absolutely help. Will you have a place to plug into at night?
@@BrandonDriver Nope, gonna supercharge in areas close to the backcountry like Hope, BC (I currently live in Chilliwack BC and have home charger at moms house), then adding as much solar as I can make work(200W-5000W) to charge as much lithium house battery as I can fit in my rear under floor trunk and maybe frunk (3kw/h- 10kw/h) so I can use a little 250W space heater or elec blanket as my backup power if I am running low. (Heats pump in the model y isnt quite as heaty in the really cold temps apparently so gonna bring backup ideas and test them out) hopefully with a 2000W inverter (I hear you need 1500W), I can replenish my car battery (probably in a really low inefficient way cuz of the 120V) from the climate control losses and see how long I can survive on my water and dried fruits and rice. Also in Canada, starlink internet is just getting out there now and the starlink engineers did a reddit ama and said eventually you will be able to go rving with starlink so the plan is to take starlink with me as well cuz at that point it's just a matter of getting power solar and avoiding eye strain from gaming too much
as of now in the beta program, starlink is geofenced into just one location, but on "tesla time news" they said theyre going to be testing starlink on airplanes.

@@jmattos Love Incognito, going to try to collab with them for a future video! And thank you, going to check now!
Low profile tires don't wear faster because there's "less rubber". If they do wear faster, it's likely because they tend to be made with softer/stickier rubber. Also, low profile tires will get your rims banged or damaged in high-pothole areas.
Which wheel is best If you are likely to hit more potholes?
The smallest! The smaller the wheels, the more the rubber, and the better it can absorb unexpected impact like from potholes.
Can you have 21inch rims with all season tires?
Good explanations about all the choices. I'm ok with the Gemini caps and am surprised at that because I hate the aero wheel covers from the Model 3s!
They're a unique design! Glad you like them. Haven't seen anything similar on any other car yet.
Very helpful, I was looking for a video like that and found it, thanks. Wonder if the Gemini wheels can be painted
Thank you! They sure can be painted. Make sure the shop you go to has done Teslas before.
Great review! Short, concise and to the point. I personally chose the Gemini for the extra range and just to save on long term cost. My next one is gonna be the model S which I'm gonna go all in on that bad boi haha.
Love it, efficiency is awesome! And please do, the Arachnid rims on the Model S are my favorite design of any that Tesla make.
I'm going to put Titan 7 light Forged wheels
Also note there are 3rd part sellers with 18".
In pothole areas stay with the standard wheel
True, please be careful getting thinner tires with potholes. Easiest way to get a blowout
Congratulations on your order, don’t forget a referral code! I love the inductions, I think you made a good choice.
i just ordered the exact same combo. the aesthetic is so fire for me its worth the slight extra cost in the long run especially when the price of the car is kind of cheap for what you get. :)
@@goattombrady5837 You are going to love it!
@@goattombrady5837 congratulations! Love this color combo. Shoot me a message if you’d like a delivery checklist or a free financing analysis!
Can you just buy a bigger tire to go with 20” induction wheel?
^What Machina said
Is the 19” Tire in Gemini that comes with our Model Y purchase is an All Season Tire?
Last I checked yes!
Thank you!
Can you rotate 20” induction wheels?? I know 21” you can’t.
What about ride comfort? How much will the comfort vary between the 19 inch and 21 inch options?
Not a huge difference between the two, but the 19” is slightly less bumpier for the ride with more rubber to absorb the road.
Anyone know how the induction wheels do in the winter/snow?
Great content! I had a LR M Y on order but test drive the Performance version yesterday and updated my order for the M Y P. I test drove the M 3 P a while back and wanted the P all along but given I live in MA, the Gemini wheels would be more practical along with not having the car lowered by an inch. Tough decision but I’ve committed to the P and plan on replacing the 21inch Uberturbine wheels with the Gemini wheels coupled with an off road/winter tire. Any insight on why Tesla won’t let you choose the wheel configuration within limits of course? Thanks
BTW, Nice shout out to KBHD!
Congratulations on your upgrade! I think they're particular about the Performance getting the best wheels for the extra torque. I would probably do something similar as to what you're thinking of, but I have heard of smaller wheels skipping and not gripping the road properly on Performance cars.
@@BrandonDriver Great point about the skipping! Thanks.
Cheap standard rims, WHY because it feels less bumpy and when it is time to change tires they are not expensive as others. I am driving to work at list 100 miles per day.
What’s up with the big pumpkin on the desk
Thanksgiving :)
Do u know if tesla model y voids the warranty if I get aftermarket 18-inch wheels
hey i hve a model y lang range but i want to upgrade the tires to 21" is it possible also good an idea?
Can you tell any difference it the quality of the ride of the Y depending on the tire? Does the 19" create a softer ride due to more rubber and perhaps more air?
It does! It's subtle, I personally haven't noticed enough of a difference that I would mind, but it is there. The 19" will have a slightly softer ride.
I'm thinking about downsizing my OE 20s for Geminis (and taking those butt-ugly hubcaps off!) or maybe even 18-inchers. They're out there.
Gemini - not free, but included in price.
Disappointing, you didn’t talk about the ride quality difference between all of them. The Geminis should give the softest ride and less road noise.
In my experience it’s a very minor difference, something I only noticed when I was looking for it. Wanted to focus on the bigger differences
@@benevolent24 This sounds like quite an adventure. You’ll definitely get lower battery performance when it’s cold, but it sounds like you have that already well thought out. Will you be documenting this adventure? It would make for an epic youtube series!
@@benevolent24 that will be so cool. I can’t wait for that future to be here.
Thank you for this video Brandon. New Subscriber here. My next question if you feel qualified to answer, 7th seat vs 5th seat model. We generally don't ue the 7th seat, so it would be useful occasionally/rarely.
Hi B H! Unless you ABSOLUTELY never drive kids, I'd get the 7-seats. Better resale value, you can fold them flat when you're not using them, and you always have them just in case you need them.
Do you think it is silly to trade my model y Performance wheels for 20" induction wheels? My city has lots of pot holes. Just to recap what you said. more rubber will prevent tires from popping ?
By the way nice video!!!
Thank you Talgat!
went with the 19's , gonna plasti dip them for the black look
I'd love to see them if you post photos!
Get some Konig 19x19.5mm rennform rims.

What’s the deal with videos I’ve seen where the perf model Y’s getting same range as the LR model Y’s. I1 Tesla did one. Kinda of disappointing.
Haven’t seen these, thank you for the heads up. Time to go do some research.
@@BrandonDriver I didn't see those videos either.
It is TESLA Y so + 20 inch
if you curb rash your wheels, maybe driving lessons would be in order! we own a 2023 model 3 DM as well as a 2024 model Y DM, and both have 19" wheels and see no justifiable economic or ego reason to change them...
those 19 inch wheels 🤭
