We've been following Nora from The Professional Hobo for years now and she was a huge inspiration for us when we first got started travelling full-time and trying to sustain our travels by working online.
We recently (and finally!) had the chance to meet her in person when we were both in Toronto at the same time, so we sat down and asked her all about her digital nomad lifestyle.
In this interview, she talks about 2 of the key things that make financially sustainable travel possible: reducing your expenses, and finding a way to earn money as you go.
She also talks about the challenges and rewards of the lifestyle, including surviving 3 natural disasters, 3 tropical diseases, the theft of her passport, and much more.

Takes lots of funding and boats and plane travel very costly....
And being connected or knowing how to be or get connected... when your at or have been at a certain financial circle ppl will look at you differently.... just saying.... ya can just tell she has had it different than 98% of travelers....

In the 1970th many people traveled even during the Vietnam war which is dangerous, today too can be dangerous in some parts of the World. Back then people chatted among themselves about the experiences they had today we are broadcasting it all over the social media. The biggest motivator is also making money by filming others about their travels and experiences. TH-cam brought incentives to motivate people to share their experiences. I enjoy it and goes both ways.

Mark Twain: Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.

I've been living in Hawaii for 9 months, free accommodation, organic fruit and veggies included and getting paid. This chick was a huge inspiration. Now I'm headed to Alaska for 2 months, free room and board. I'm making money freelance writing and through music production.

Finally! Someone who actually shares all the info about their money. Too often people skip the fact they already "had money" before they began their travel lifestyle, leading you to believe they magically did it all with nothing. They always say they sold everything but leave out the part where they have a trust fund or a big company to sell off.
Nora Dunn's perspectives about travel have encouraged and inspired me to pursue this kind of lifestyle. I feel like I don't belong to an organization or a company and just remain as an employee for the rest of my life. I consider myself a free soul who wants to experience the world. I'm building the foundations of my plan to pursue an online career and save up before I start traveling. My first destination would be Southeast Asia since this is the region where my country, the Philippines, belongs, and explore other countries either at the end of this year or the first quarter of next year. And, who knows, I might find opportunities in Latin America or other parts of Asia or Europe. Thank you so much, Exploring Alternatives, for your insightful videos! Why have I just met you now? :)

What about the visas? How do u get it in ur travels?
@@johnnynunes4293 Americans get 3 months for most EU countries, or group of countries in Schengen, 6 months in the UK, so you can go out then come back as needed. Lately I've been doing 3 months in Schengen, then 3 in Croatia, but I'm buying a house in Croatia which will give me 9 months a year to travel freely in Croatia. If you want to travel to a country that requires visas then send their embassy an e mail to ask how they are doing visas lately. Many countries have visa waivers these days. It depends on where you are from, but you can sort it not too difficulty.

What's fascinating about Nora, is how profoundly happy she seems with her situation.I guess that says something.
When she is 40, and childless, she will regret all of it. She is sacrificing her best child-rearing years to selfishly travel. Meanwhile, she could be having a family and traveling with them. She will be lonely in later life.

For volunteering in exchange for full accomodation (and sometimes food) Workaway is great too!

Well when you have a very useless passport that requires visa... For almost every country it ain't that easy. Canadian passport is powerful

I'm from Malaysia, not a rich country, but our passport is still widely accessible to nearly all countries in the world, except Israel.
Haha, same here, the Mexican passport needs visa for maybe half of the world...
I defer from your statement, I've been in Malaysia and it is a rich country, corrupted I know, but with the political changes of 2018 things might get better.

Nora is Canadian and Canada has had universal health care for decades. I wouldn’t want to live in a country without universal health care.
