Most of the big SM64 streamers who hold or held WR blew up only *after* getting their first WR. Even now there are plenty of WR contenders for various categories being slept on bc they havent got it yet.

24:36 Are you saying you need to learn how to grab bowser without touching his tail? it's pretty easy. the game checks to see if you within range, if you're roughly facing the same way as bowser, and if you "have touched" his tail, not if you "are touching".
to do the trick, touch Bowser's tail, then face a direction, wait for bowser to be within range and facing the same direction as you, then press B. he'll warp in front of you into your hands. quite fun.
I'll admit, I'm not sure about the specific condition to do with which way Mario and Bowser are facing, but it appears there's a large room for error there. play around with it.

12:10 simply the triple jump dive is really easy after u do the buffer kick you hold left instead of up left for a bit and you have like 10 million frames to double jump instead of 2 its super free I do it in runs and my 70 pb is like 54 minutes

Can someone please explain this to me? I've never understood splits. Time goes from -31.2 to -29.0 but they say 5/6 seconds. How do splits work or whatever? Shouldn't that be a 2.2 second loss? Sorry for the ignorance but I've always wondered
The splits usually start counting down at a certain point. So when he grabs the star, the split time stops and shows his pace. In this case -29.0 means he is 29 seconds faster than his pb pace. If it were to be +29, he would 29 seconds slower than pb pace. Basically all of the splits are based off of your best time.
I believe they say 5/6 seconds because that's how far off his best segment is. Best segment is the fastest he has ever completed that specific segment. Now the +/- shown next to his split is how far ahead or behind the pace of his PB run split at that point in the run.
he's looking at the best split for that segment which you can see is a 1:49, he splits this run at 1:55 which is where the 5/6 secs comes from
He lost 2.2 to his pb, and lost 5-6 seconds to if he'd done the star well

I don’t see it in the comments anywhere, but can someone explain how pathing to do HMC later in the run rather than while in the basement is faster?
Going to DDD straight from LLL is a quicker path and you have to go back down to the basement again to get Mipps the second time because he doesn't come back until you get 50 stars.
its because mips doesn't appear until 50 stars. its only slightly faster really, but no other route is as good (currently?) there's some ideas though

is it normal for top runners to only complete 1 run out of 300? Like dont you just want to complete a run sometimes even if you PB
