Simply reacts to a SM64 70 star TAS speedrun. I wonder how the Mario 64 70 Star WR will get to the TAS. Different speedrunning strategies appear over time, such as Chip Clip and framewalk sm64, so you never know. Mario 64 Speedrunner reacts to DS Version Speedrun is gaining some traction recently, so I'll just pop it here.
gleasn is a cool guy. Did you know about gleasn? He does the title, description and thumbnails for Simply's TH-cam channel. Simply streams all sorts of things like Super Mario 64, Minecraft and more, sometimes with people like Mizkif and Ludwig. Mizkif is probably better than this TAS, but Simply is pretty good at Super Mario 64. He doesn't like Super Mario Odyssey very much though. Anyway, without gleasn this channel wouldn't actually exist, so if you see this please type "thank you gleasn" in the comments. I wonder if gleasn will actually keep this keyword dump or if he will remove it for an actual one. Because I'm oknem, not gleasn. Oops. ((thank you oknem ❤️))

I take it as though the only thing that matters to mario when it spawns is the star so to him everything else freezes but it doesn’t in reality.
This happens because there is a global timer in Mario 64 that controls nearly everything. Blinking is one of them, so therefore whenever the timer goes up by a certain value, Mario blinks.
to this day it baffles me how good this TAS guy is. peak human performance.

I think I speak for all of us when I say,
BLJless 70 stars is by far the coolest TAS, it is kinda boring watching a TAS doing a random BLJ and teleporting to the star on the other side of the level.

I feel like it’s nice to see it with and without. The random BLJ’s make a TAS a TAS yknow. Like, we want stuff that isn’t possible RTA. But also it’s nice to see what is “technically” viable RTA

At 21:00 we hold back to enter the turning around animation, because walking has a speed cap of 48. So you generally see this happen when we have enough speed that when we hold back we have more than 48 speed. Though in this case it conserves like 0.1 units of speed and is basically pointless

I don't think machine learning for Mario is outside the realm of possibility. For the Starcraft machine learning project, they had it begin by analyzing human play to create a baseline, I bet a similar thing could be done with Mario to help it get to the point where it can actually find stars, and then let it do the self-teaching thing from there.

Keep in mind I ovbiously don't do it as precise as the TAS.

"Machine learning sounds far away." Current predictions from the top are that we have AGI in 5 years. Some think OpenAI has it already but their not revealing it yet. Oh and AGI is beyond what we need to ML Mario TAS, we can do that now but it might be segmented. The problem is that the serious researchers don't have Mario TAS at the top of their project list like they should.

Manipulating the rng of coin drops and enemy locations isn't that bad. I don't know specifically how the rng is determined on a frame by frame basis, but either you can spawn the coins on a different frame or do very slightly different inputs on your route to where ever the coins are going to spawn from. Some games rng is calculated on a pretty rigid schedule where it counts in a predictable patterns regardless of your input and the output is always the same as long as you activate it on the same frame, however sometimes rng is effected through player manipulation, so changing an input can change the sequence even if you get to the location on the same frame as you did on a different rerecord. Basically with the first example, an rng counter will count 1 > 4 > 7 > 2 > 8 > 9 > repeat infinitely with no variation, however with the second example it could go 1 > 4 > 7 > 2 > 8 > 9 in on sequence, however if Mario jumps a frame later or has a slightly different angle it could go 1 > 4 > 5 > 9 > 3 > 2, etc.
I fairly certain Mario 64 uses a mixture of both of these rng options, as most games do, and with the sheer amount of outcomes possible for coin drops and enemy behavior I'm fairly certain both of those are determined with option 2, meaning manipulating it optimally isn't all that bad and can be done with brute force.

Basically, Mario makes dust when he does certain actions so they use that and other thing to change the rng value. There’s 65,536 different values since it’s stored using 2 bytes (16 bits, 2^16=65,536). The sequence of values is the same every time and the next one is only calculated when an object calls the rng function.
