I was digging a fish pond in my backyard then I ran into some boulders that are too big for me to move them out by myself. I learned a method to break rocks into smaller piece using hammer drill and feather type chisels. The process is simple:
- Drill a line of holes
- Set up the chisels in the holes
- Use a hammer to force the chisels into the rock to create a crack
I was able to break a boulder into few small pieces but the masonry drill bits got hot and loss their performance very quickly.
I found 2 tricks that help me keep drilling with those bits to make the most out of them:
- Use a coolant fluid to cool down the bit after each hole
- When the bits got dull, use a smaller bit to pre-drill the hole then use the big one to drill to size will help drill faster
Using these 2 tricks, I was able to extend to almost 5X longer the lifespan of each drill bit.

Salut Minh! ça fait longtemps... Intéressant de retrouver une méthode utilisée dans le monde pour fendre des rocs nettement plus volumineux que les tiens. Dans mon pays, Madagascar, les roches sont souvent en granit très dur. Je doute que des mèches comme les tiennes puissent résister longtemps même avec le refroidissement éventuel. Bon, en attendant le début de la réalisation de ta mare, bon courage et on attend beaucoup (artistiquement aussi) de ce qu'il en ressortira. Porte-toi et ta famille bien l'ami! Merci pour les trucs.

Salut mon ami, ca fait bien longtemps. Je m'etait bien occupe avec mon start-up pour le systeme de filtration. En fait, ce projet aussi fait part de mes tests. Je voudrais voir si mon systeme marche aussi pour les grand volume d'eau. Il a commecne a faire froid ici a Maryland, donc je n'ajouterai pas de poison pour le moment. J'attendrai jusqu'au printemps. Et toi, comment va?

@@minhsmancave9448 Salut Minh! Merci, tout va bien à Strasbourg. Ils ont même commencé à chauffer les appartements avant octobre... avec tous les soucis du pétrole et gaz... Je me souviens que tu parlais de ta startup il y a déjà quelque mois. Tu comptes occuper une niche? Je suppose que tu as fait déjà avec ton épouse, une étude de marché. De plus ton système de filtration est 100% naturelle et écologique. Je pense que ça devrait intéresser du monde. Passer à un plus gros volume doit être possible, mais c'est un challenge quand même. Eh bien, on attendra le printemps pour les poissons.
Je comprends pourquoi l'Amérique aime les Asiatiques. Ils aiment entreprendre. et tu en es un exemple. Au fait c'est quoi comme roche? Porte-toi bien avec toute la famille. Bye

I've just never used hammer drill or jack hammer before so I have no idea how fast they work. I also only have limited time to work on the pond everyday so buying a hammer drill, I can work at my own pace.

@@minhsmancave9448 I have had several projects like your to do over my lifetime, and I have use the drill and split, or sledge hammer method. The first time I used a jackhammer I swore I would never go back!

Oh no, not glass. Did you use a face mask? Silicosis mate, you don't want it. Where did you get chisels?
