I'm a little disappointed with the lack of Autobot symbols since they could have just thrown them in for those who don't have a sticker sheet lying around but it's not much problem to remedy plus I don't blame them with Zeta Toys going too far and bringing the spotlight to third parties. Anyway I definitely agree about Mp-44. For me if he didn't have the whole knee issue and was a little cheaper, more around the range of 250 and some change maybe even 300 even including shipping and tax when buying him anywhere be it oversees or in America, I could probably get over the backpack and the broken up sculpt for the legs since it's not that big of a deal. Then you look at this guy, built to last, considerably cheaper and a much cleaner bot mode and then it's not even a contest. I'm also tempted to pick up a second since I do like that v1 mold headsculpt. While it may not be quite as accurate as the cartoon series head that Mp-44 has, I think this head looks the part well enough and just overall looks better.
I think might get this figure. Although I will probably paint over the grey hinge right above the waist, and maybe paint those silver circles and screw holes. I do have one question, in robot mode the bumper on the back isn't exactly accurate to the cartoon, as in in the cartoon, it's not there, so I was wondering, is that a piece I can remove?
It is definitely a better figure in overall ranking ~ I just purchased one right away after MP44 released. I'd rather get the one with lower price/better looking from 3 sides/way better transformation.
Well done Chris Could ! The best. The most honest and level headed comparison reviews on Mp44 and TE-01 I have seen. I have both as well and after one week of having version 3 TE-01 and three weeks with Mp44 I have very similar feelings about both. TE-01 is just simply the best toy for all incomes and I do love Mp44 and it's glossy look. But OP leader is built to last. It's cartoon accurate. It's fun and it's for everyone. Keep up the great reviews Chris. 👍🏻
finally i know the reason why some reviews have it with transparent windows, i was scratching my head thinking it was the lighting they had! And gosh, i personally love the transparent ones over the almost opaque one..
Thank you for the video. I'm late to the party to all these transformers figures and maybe it's for the best. Love the G1 versions of all the transformers, and this is by far, the most attractive of all the Prime I've seen. Just ordered version 3 and an IT-01 Megatron.

They will have to thin out the arms and the upper body just a little bit more,just a little to be the perfect g1 OP.They got the perfect back already but an addition of that little blue bulk on the butt will seal the no contest against mp44.
I still like my v1, I get the improvements but I guess I'll wait and see if they go for like v5 or more xD, I mean 3 versions in less than a year? Come on. Is neat for those that can afford it, but i'll wait furthermore. The v1 is still an excellent figure to enjoy.
Thank you for this. Very small, but in itself no subtle differences I have to say and nice tinted windows, actually. I did covers for the inside of my V2, so the windows are no longer sea-through and on the inside I got a few tech details now. So I´m happy with my customed V2, wholepunch mod for the foot slider too btw. :) We are on the same page with MP44. I see where the money, partially, is in the engineering. But here´s the thing, which I also said in my review (in german, sadly for you, if you would´ve want to check it out): it´s over engineered. TE managed to get this look and nail the truck in a realistic manner, except for the first bits on both transformations, the transformations themselves are fun and while MP44's works, it´s just too much. Too many parts that move, are toleranced and have to fold and clip into each other. I transformed MP44 about 5 times and in 4 instances the truck didn´t come out like I wanted it to. The tanks on the sides always came out crooked and that´s although I followed the instructions meticulously. And the panels on the sides didn´t clip in like they should either. And that´s what fueled my score too. He barely got a 7/10 and the engineering and transformation were big chunks ripping away from the score. TE doesn´t have the accessories, but that´s another thing where MP44 is just too much. $450 is just premium money and they put in accessories as for a toy. But a mainline toy you can transform loads of times and there´s no paintchip, but here, you are supposed to transform AND play with it, pegging stuff in and paint chips. On a $450 figure that´s a no go and Flame Toys show how it´s done. Sure, it doesn´t transform, but you get my point, right? The clear winner for me is Transform Element's and I won´t exchange it for MP44.
No problem; I'm glad you found it useful. I also added decals to the windows of my V1, but removed them for the video to demonstrate the differences between the two. They do make a difference though! I agree, MP-44 is over-engineered and the tolerances are off. For the money you would expect it to be much better in that regard, but it's almost as if they didn't test it before release. Actually, worse still, they probably realised too late in the day that there were problems with the first production run and went ahead anyway. It would explain why they haven't even acknowledged the issues. Plausible deniability and all that. I'm scared to touch it for fear of it breaking and I'm certainly never transforming it again. That's really not a good state of affairs for such an expensive figure. Again, I agree with you about the hefty premium attached to MP-44. For that money it shouldn't feel like a cheap, mass produced toy, but that is sadly exactly what it does feel like. Thanks for watching.
Oh, I just now noticed that my figure's gun has the detail in the back of it painted in grey, and the rest of the gun is definitely black rather than dark grey, like both guns of your figures. Then again, it was a new release, so my version is probably "V4".

It’s still the best MP Prime so far. The first mod I did though was paint the windshields. I hated the transparent blue. I also don’t like the gray gun, it should be gunmetal black, I absolutely prefer the 2.0 version head. I just wish the neck was slightly higher. I might try model/printing and taller or extendable neck. I also noticed on your original version, you seem to have blue covers for the metal sliding pins on the legs. Mine are bare metal.
This video only pushes my interest in a TE-01. As much as I'd like to get MP-44, I refuse to pay $450 for that, plus the transformation is insanely complex. OP Leader on the other hand is far cheaper, yet looks much more durable than MP-44.

I'm going to ditch the iPhone for videos going forward because they appear to be terrible at recording audio (mono and low quality, as opposed to my much cheaper old Android device, which was stereo and pretty good). You may need to adjust your volume.

I first happened upon MP-44 but thanks to videos like yours, I've decided OP Leader is the one for me. I see it's currently available for preorder for $199. Do you believe this will be version 4? There doesn't seem to be any information out there regarding this latest release, not even from Transform Element.
why is there a rectangle grey box on the waist? I looked at this in Alt mode and that spot doesn't seem to be a different color in alt mode. Anyhow, it sticks out and is the only reason why I haven't gotten this yet. IMO, this is better than magic square even with this problem. I love what they did to the windshield.
The entire waist assembly rotates 180, which is why it looks different between modes. It's possible the upcoming V4 of this figure will finally use a white piece, but I can only speculate that it was done in that colour because it was cheaper to put it on a sprue with the other dark grey pieces.
I learned a while ago to look at a figure's back before you commit. If promotional shots don't show it, there's a good chance that it's because the manufacturer knows it looks bad. MP-44 is an absolute mess from every angle but the front: Nothing but seams, gaps, kibble, hinges, screws and cuts. Even if it had been reasonably priced, I still would've stuck to my TE-01. I think they are a lot of Hasbro/Takara purists that don't want to admit that a 3rd party company can do better(especially if they already spent the money).
Thanks for posting this video. I've been comparing a few of these Optimus Prime figures MP44 and TE 01 (1st and 2nd release) now that you've posted the 3rd release of this toy. I'm noticing a difference with the color of his thighs and waist. Did they paint them grey? The first 2 releases show his legs white. Pretty much like mp44. Or is it the lighting in your room?
Any one noticed the white leg panels are plastic now and not metal i had v1 first and the panels where metal but on the one i have now they are plastic
I got this one today. The robot mode looks very nice and has a nice range of movement, but good lord the transformation is complicated - not to mention that the instructions are very vague at some phases and others are even missing from them. Also, some of the fiddling that the upper body requires can be really tough to pull out even if you know what to do. Still, the end result looks so good that going through all that trouble is, just barely, worth it. By the way, the colour of the LED light in the gun seems to have a very pinkish hue in this video, whereas the light in my figure's gun is very fiery red (having a slightly orange hue). I wonder if it is just because of the colouration of the video? EDIT: Now that I have done the transformation a couple of times more, it does not seem _that_ complicated, although there are quite many phases in it. The instructions should be clearer, though.
If you have access to a laser printer you can buy waterslide paper really cheap on eBay etc and print your own. I did two sheets - one white backed and one transparent - over a year ago and I still have loads of both factions left. They're also very good when you need to apply to delicate surfaces, such as painted die cast, as they can be positioned in situ until they dry.
It's covered in the video, but on balance, the V3. The V1 is good, but the V3 has numerous minor improvements. The only thing that isn't as good is that they used a red LED for the gun instead of yellow...
Wow sorry, you feel this way. TE's look super wooden, blocky and stiff IMO. MP44 although a little bit too pricey is lightyears ahead in aesthetic, just an alternate opinion. If you wanna sell your MP44 let me know, UK based.
Why are you sorry? We all have different opinions and aesthetic preferences. As I mentioned, I think MP-44 does some things better than TE-01 (but I don't consider it to be light years ahead by any means), but not enough to justify the price. This is especially true because of all of the QC issues.
This debate between Mp44 and TE-01 is one of the closest and most polarizing debates I have seen between two Transformers. If TE-01 had a trailer and other gimmicks and was a similar price to MP44 then it would be clear Mp44 is a slight class above. But it's the quality issue that cannot be ignored. Mainly the knee issues and paint chipping with the official. As well as the difficulty to square up the fuel tanks cleanly in truck mode. At the end of the day we are spoiled that two primes have caught so many people's interest. And I love this debate! If they clean up the quality in reissues one day for Mp44 then we will have a clear winner.
Life would be boring if we all shared the same opinions (although probably far more harmonious). I certainly wouldn't call it 'vastly' better, but it does have advantages. That said, it also has disadvantages so it's swings and roundabouts. It all comes down to what you want from your figures.
Exactly. As I said, I don't do this professionally so I'm not investing in additional kit. That said, I recently switched to using my work iPhone as it has more storage, but that seems to have worse audio than my old Android device so I'm going to switch back for my next video. It's unfortunate that both this and my MP-44 review had issues though.

That back bulge on MP-44 is just unacceptable. Takara's lust for a gimmicky voice box destroyed that figure.

Legs are the same on both copies. Unlike MP-44 they've never been pure white, more like an off-white or greyish colour.
I just preordered a reissue of him on tf direct. Are all the ones coming out now going to have the light blue windows? Thats the one i want to have

Not sure what you mean. I have both and there are no metal parts on the legs, only the knees.
TE has no ab crunch, as good as a statue. MP44 is vastly more enjoyable to pose and play with imagination.

Wow sorry, you feel this way. TE's look super wooden, blocky and stiff IMO. MP44 although a little bit too pricey is lightyears ahead in aesthetic, just an alternate opinion. If you wanna sell your MP44 let me know, UK based.
Why are you sorry? We all have different opinions and aesthetic preferences. As I mentioned, I think MP-44 does some things better than TE-01 (but I don't consider it to be light years ahead by any means), but not enough to justify the price. This is especially true because of all of the QC issues.
This debate between Mp44 and TE-01 is one of the closest and most polarizing debates I have seen between two Transformers. If TE-01 had a trailer and other gimmicks and was a similar price to MP44 then it would be clear Mp44 is a slight class above. But it's the quality issue that cannot be ignored. Mainly the knee issues and paint chipping with the official. As well as the difficulty to square up the fuel tanks cleanly in truck mode. At the end of the day we are spoiled that two primes have caught so many people's interest. And I love this debate! If they clean up the quality in reissues one day for Mp44 then we will have a clear winner.

Life would be boring if we all shared the same opinions (although probably far more harmonious). I certainly wouldn't call it 'vastly' better, but it does have advantages. That said, it also has disadvantages so it's swings and roundabouts. It all comes down to what you want from your figures.

Exactly. As I said, I don't do this professionally so I'm not investing in additional kit. That said, I recently switched to using my work iPhone as it has more storage, but that seems to have worse audio than my old Android device so I'm going to switch back for my next video. It's unfortunate that both this and my MP-44 review had issues though.
