I'm just impressed that someone finally leaned full hard into the cartoon. I don't get why MP44 had the toon bot asthetic, and then made a realistic truck cab with a cartoonesque look. The MS having those single square headlights has my full respect
I have the TE, but some of the aesthetics were off to me. Like the arrow and stripes on the forearm that were unpainted. The decision to make him more of a bean pole also didn't sit right with me. The MS fits more with the bruisers I prefer.

Nice review. I never picked up TE. It's a nice figure but to me it looked too skinny. I purchased the MS-01 and their second version in my opinion is the best out there. I don't have any issues with mine. Joints are tight and the plastic doesn't feel as cheap as a lot of pple were saying. He replaced their 1st version on my shelf already!

TE nails it. It might lack add ons, and a bit of movement, but in both forms/build, it wins no problem.
I was bummed out at how light MS-02 feels in hand. It felt cheap to me.

Great review. I have them both and enjoy them. MS cut some corners on build quality (stack and mirrors/doors), but for the price point it's a solid option.

Just a random idea: for articulation it'd be cool to come up with a few poses (like hero landing, hands on hips, saluting) that would stress test articulation and help understand from a practical sense how a bot performs. TE01 on paper has good leg articulation but the ratchet points and lack of ab crunch mean he's really hard to balance as a result, even with the weighted feet.

TE01 has been one of my fav MP OP for the longest time, but the new sculpt from MS really impressed me, though many complains the lack of diecast and heft in their figure.
I've got both and they both have their pros and cons, but I prefer MS02. Poseability is a big factor for me since I love fiddling around with it and putting it in goofy poses, the lil guy oozes personality. OP leader, while it has denser plastic, a slightly better silhouette, and face that fills out the helmet, has the heft and poseability of a brick. Still, I really love them both!

The MS Light of Peace is such a light piece compared to other MP styled Primes.. It would of probably been the best choice if it had better quality plastic, better build quality, solidity, and heft. Maybe some paint as well though I understand people who prefer not having it painted for it to avoid chipping and be more playable. Thanks for the comparison.

The MS light of peace would be my perfect G1 optimums if they re made it with better materials. I think how it looks and its poseability is so so good. but i just wish it was more robust
Tough choice, I love how the magic has good articulation, but I'm a fan sturdiness and weight. I'm liking the element more and more every time I see them together so that would be my choice between the two.
Engineering should've gone to Magic Square - hands down the most cartoon accurate MP Prime to date. Build quality matters though and I will wait for a metallic or transparent version if they come out. Otherwise, I will stick with TE-01 and my KO MP-44 for now.

Wow, that was as close as it gets. Does this mean that in your estimation, TE's is the best MP Optimus Prime currently on the market?
In my opinion TE has the best overall build quality which is important to me personally and makes it my first choice, MS has the best articulation so a lot of people prefer that despite lack of quality, MP-44 (or the KO) is still a good option as well if you prefer that styling.

I have the TE01 and MP44 KO and was trying to decide if it should sell those for this, but after all the reviews and this comparison, I just can’t see myself trading the MS2.0 for those two. With how amazing the XTB Ultra Magnus looks, I hope they eventually tackle Optimus Prime and an updated Megatron

Where did you get the $169 price for the Magic Square from? The figure is around $125 at the official Magic Square site and Show Z.

Is your TE-01 starting to turn? Because my TE-01 is very white. I did get him in june so maybe the more recent ones are whiter. I don't have the MP scale Magic Square but I do have the legends scale. I will post a comparison on you FB. Anyway great review. I love my TE-01 and I like it the best. In my current display articulation is not a problem. I might get MP-44 in the future but for the price I could get a Metroplex or several MPs or legends.

I love TE-01. It's sturdy and looks good. I respect MP-44. It's innovative transformation and Solid truck and very good in the robot mode. Though MS-02 is super clean and looks like Prime is about to talk. lol. So I look forward to feeling and seeing this guy. Definitely wins overall without geting my hands on it yet
I got TE-01 from Show-Z back when it first came out for $103.99, so an even better deal. At the time I was weighing it against the first version of Magic Square OP which I think was around the same price. There are definitely elements of the MS figure that I like, and maybe I'll get it to have one in truck mode and one in bot mode.
I have 3 different versions of the TE 01 mold so yeah that’s my boy. I did like the way MS looked but I’m sad about the build quality
Usually I don’t look at all these points, I only go for the one looks better in the robot mode, but this time, the terrible quality of the MS 2.0 really changed my mind, it does looks better to me, but I’m not getting it just cuz of the shorty quality, maybe I’ll get him if they can fix the quality issue in the future reissues. But there are so many MP scale primes, so this is not a must have for me.
Does the way the Magic Square backpack sticks out on his sides and above his shoulders bother anyone else? It’s like Siege Optimus Prime- it’s hard to unsee after you see it. TE-01 does not have this issue.

As great as the articulation is on the Magic Square, I think I'll stick with OP Leader. I've heard my fair share of people having complaints with the MS being too light and the plastic being really weak compared to the OP Leader's more brick-like feel (Which, IMO, is the perfect feel for *Optimus Prime*). Really appreciate this review

I paid $113 for my MS-02EX and $67 For my MS-01X version on Magic Square. However I paid $90 for my TE-01. They are all better priced than MP-44.
I just got the TE OP a few months ago. I had no idea it was that old of a mold
TE is almost perfect except the size of the windows on his chest, and why is one smokestack shorter on the LOP

No contest imo. Better G1 toon accuracy, better transformation, cleaner, and better articulation. Paint is irrelevant as is weight. Neither are perquisites for a transformer and do not equate to greatness. MS-02 isn't perfect I stress, but nor is any other transformer. But for me, he's the closest we've gotten yet to the cartoon and I couldn't be happier!
MS should launch a premium version with diecast , then it will be the BEST prime up to date ..
TBF to the TE-01 transformation: it's far from intuitive (aside from maybe the legs), but it won't kill you with super-tight tolerances. You follow the instructions right, and things just slide past each other, with juuust enough clearance.
I just transformed my to alt mode and back to robot mode, and despite a couple years' collecting dust on a shelf, I still managed to do so without wanting to tear my hair out.
Is it as fun and intuitive as Magic Square's "MP-10 but better" transformation? Definitely not. Is it as maddening as DS-01 Crimson WIngs? Far from it.
Te01 is the best prime today, even over mp 44

11:34 where would the thigh rotation be counted? Or did that end up tied anyway due to the less effective knee rotation? On your score card I figure hips is front and back as well as out to the side, and knees are for the single and double jointed knees, but don't know where to place the thigh rotation on it. It is such a basic point that I can't think of many other figures besides TE Prime that don't have it so I was wondering if it was just left off.
Hmm, I seem to be missing that line item, but it doesn't matter much because TE lost articulation either way
I can't help but wonder on the price category how well pre-pandemic prices compare to post-pandemic prices. Nothing you can do about it obviously, but I still wonder what TE would cost if it came out now for example.
Damn. I did not order Light of Peace when it was first released because I already have Op Leader. I did decide to order it later when the second release was announced but after seeing this comparison, I began to hesitate with my decision again. I do prefer the cartoon accuracy above anything else but build quality is also important to me. Light of Peace's more cartoon accurate look is basically in the backside only, as pointed out in this video, and I doubt that I would enjoy posing and playing with it as much as I do with Op Leader.
I prefer MS02 mainly because the articulation and proportions are far better from a design aspect. It just looks better. The back is no comparison, it’s not even slightly close. When it comes to cartoon accurate MS-02 hands down superior.
What about Light of Peace vs Light of Freedom?
I would get ms-02.
But Op was 80$ for an mp scale optimus. You can't beat that.
Excellent VS Sony, hmmm...its only when the old is next to the new when one see how good the old was/is. Overall TE wins and that I have to agreed, I can feel the Build difference through the vid from your handling of the figures. Also esthetically with all the stuff MS got right , there are still some that TE did better...no capelet, no extended thigh look, no weird elbow forearm, and lastly but not least the faceplate that does not fill in the head area and this we are only talking about Bot mode...😂 long live TE01.

Im a year late comment, but id like to ask if u have an update review regarding the 2023 version of the Magic Square Light of Peace, its called the MS02EX. It’s got diecast in that version.

I personally have problems with the magic square there thing I dont like about it and thing I do like but for me I'll stick with the transform element op leader.
I'm a little disappointed in TE-01's back and rear diaper, but it has the absolutely most movie-accurate Matrix chamber too.
I’d been looking for a full comparison between the two. Still torn on which to get. Neither is perfect.
Think te01 back of the truck mode looks toon accurate, if u watch s1 ep07 where optimus drives without trailer

I wanted to get the MS02 but after watching this i think i will hold off for a while until they made improvement on the build qualify. Thou the element comes close and its more cheap. I leaning towards MS02

There is only one choice here and thats the MS 02 light of piece. First MS is cheaper its more g1 acurate the truck is waaaay better so yeah clear choice here
Sucks MS sacrificed quality materials and paint for articulation. I would gladly paid a higher price if they would have went all in.

I really don't like the alt mode for the MS. It looks too plain and cheap. This will be an easy miss. If I want a mostly unpainted MP Prime I would grab a MP 44 KO. Thanks for the comparison Sony.

A few things to note...
on the MS website the figure is only $110 before shipping. If that flips cost it actually swings to a 5-4 in MS favor.
If Build Quality is it's own category why are you using QC issues like loose doors/mirrors against it in the alt mode?
The prices are from the same US retail site each time, I'm not gonna go and pick a random price for each toy
@@TMReviews That's fair, I just thought I'd mention it since it's the manufacturer's own price, meaning the extra money is the cost of buying from a particular distributor to meet their profit margin goals rather than the (Presumed) MSRP of the toy.
MS actually has some really good prices on their site. the same $169 will actually get you the bundle of MS-02 and your choice of MS-01 (either metallic, grey, or SG if I recall)
Then I would need to go and find the place where TE is also a lower MSRP, and it went as low as $90 so where does it end?

The way I see it personally, TE-01 is closer to how he appears in the Marvel Comics, while MS-02 is closer to how he looks in the actual G1 cartoon.
Definitely getting te-01 simply because of the durability factor. Ms would've been perfect if they just used different plastic and improved the build, especially after hearing the sounds it was making when you were handling it. Really sad especially since the articulation and colors on that prime is just perfect
It's a great looking Prime with cheap feeling plastic. Supposedly, even with it being cheap feeling, it's supposed to be very durable. Haven't had any problems with mine yet. I liked it enough to where I went ahead and pre-ordered MS-B47 Meteorite, aka Jetfire. Hopefully it'll be less than $175. With Skyfire being $275, $300 after tax, I don't know if I want another version of its over $200. I've also got the Earthrise Jetfire and that was only $80. Oh, the only thing I don't like about it is the matte look as I wished it would had done painted parts as it being all colored plastic is very cheap looking.
