    I just went through this process. It is honestly not that bad if you just follow the steps in the video. Three month wait time for appointments at most license offices, so I walked in and waited three hours for my license the same day. It's worth mentioning that only one of the documents at 1:13 is necessary, not all three.

      I’m late, but for anyone wondering; YES. You can get what’s called “non owners insurance / SR-22” and that will serve as your insurance and meet the requirement needed to get your ID Card / License

    When is it better to cancel your out state insurance? Should you cancel it asap once your car gets to NC or only once you switch your title and register?

    • @relocatingtoraleigh
      @relocatingtoraleigh  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      In my opinion, I would suggest keeping your out-of-state insurance until you register your car and have your NC insurance setup; however, I would definitely suggest talking through those details when you get your NC insurance quotes from your insurance agent. They will be able to help you through the exact timing of everything and you have to get those quotes before you register anyways.
      The NCDMV website does have the below waiver for lapse in insurance coverage, which allows a 30 day grace period if you decide to cancel your out-of-state insurance within 30 days of getting your car registered without penalty. But again, I would personally consult with your insurance agent in both states to make sure you don't violate any laws from the state you are leaving.
      From the NCDMV Website for Insurance Coverage Lapses: "The owner must furnish a copy of their out-of-state registration reflecting the vehicle has been registered by the owner in their new state within 30 days of the cancellation or expiration of the owner's North Carolina motor vehicle liability policy. "

    Great video. How long can I drive with out-of-state license plates and insurance and license before getting into trouble?

    • @relocatingtoraleigh
      @relocatingtoraleigh  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you! Technically it's 3 months for the license and plates, but given how behind our DMV is and how hard it is to get appointments, it's not really enforced that stringently as it's known that 3 months isn't really feasible. I would hop on the insurance though and try to get that situated when you get here to make sure you're covered.

    What happens if you are transferring your license from out of state (NJ) to NC? How do you show proof of insurance if you don’t already own a vehicle?

    • @relocatingtoraleigh
      @relocatingtoraleigh  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No you don't HAVE to show proof of insurance, but likely your license will likely be restricted to "fleet vehicles" only that have their own insurance (company vehicles, rental cars, etc...). Once you get a car, you'll have to go through the process to update your license to show your proof of insurance to get the restriction lifted. Hope this helps!

    So are you saying I don't have to get my car inspected before I go get plates for first time, but only later when I renew? I am confused

    • @relocatingtoraleigh
      @relocatingtoraleigh  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is correct when you're moving from out-of-state. From the DMV's website on the question of registering vehicles from out-of-state, "You will be allowed to register the vehicle without an inspection. When your next annual registration renewal is due, you must have the vehicle inspected to renew your registration."
      Now if you already reside in North Carolina, and purchase a privately owned vehicle in NC, you WILL have to get the vehicle inspected before obtaining your permanent plates (unless you have proof of inspection already within the last 12 months from previous owner).

    Do you offer a motorboat license??

    • @relocatingtoraleigh
      @relocatingtoraleigh  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For boating, no licenses are need if you were born before 1988. After 1988, you're required to pass a boater safety course, which is a several hour course online. None of this is through the NCDMV though.

    Our son is seventeen with a Colorado learning permit for over a yr and NC is telling him he can’t get his license here unless he starts all over here with a permit? Any help is greatly appreciated

    • @relocatingtoraleigh
      @relocatingtoraleigh  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      See Below. There will have to be some comparison of what training was received in Colorado vs. what is required in NC, but I would really hope he would not have to start over. Not sure how close he is to 18, but worst case, he should be able to get it at 18 anyways. It is always best to try to get the license before moving to NC because the NCDMV can be a pain with this.
      www.dmv.org/nc-north-carolina/new-to-north-carolina.php
      "If you're a teenager, you may be able to transfer your out-of-state driver's permit for a North Carolina permit as long as the driving training you received in your previous state meets the NC graduated driver's licensing (GDL) requirements."
