I can't for the life of me wrap my head around a different name for them. I connected with them so deeply when I first heard them...and, for me....The name Mandolin Orange was as mysterious as their overall vibe. The sound they produce is so mellow, warm, and emanates color...like a vibrant west coast sunset... I get none of that from Watchhouse. I've been trying for a while...and I still can't even remember the new name.... They'll always be Mandolin Orange to me.

I stumbled on this duo three years ago , a west coast boy who grew up on R&B and rap. I loved the name Mandolin Orange, but I love the music more.

I'm so annoyed with myself for hating the name change. It's their group, they can call themselves whatever they like! I love their music and will continue to listen to it, but for some reason I just can't help being irritated every time I'm reminded of the new name. I'm sure I'll get used to it eventually. I suppose sometimes people just don't like change.

They were way to far into the game as Madolin Orange for the name change to set well with many of us. They were a prominent Mandolin oriented duo with band being anonymous members for the most part. They created a dichotomy in their own history of cataloged music. Who do we search for for a period in their music?

These comments got me thinking of two phrases and I had to look up their origins. It's a stormy day of heavy rains, so I am learning something and listening 🎶 to beautiful music.
The sentence "Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose" was written by Gertrude Stein as part of the 1913 poem "Sacred Emily", which appeared in the 1922 book Geography and Plays. That's cool since her name is Emily. Emily and Andrew.
A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.... (from Romeo and Juliette by William Shakespeare)
Meaning, I receive enormous pleasure from their music. No matter what their name, a rose Is a rose...and by whatever name, it's just as sweet ♥️

I am a huge fan of the band. I learned how to finger-pick on guitar by repeatedly watching a video of Andrew playing "The Dash" with Emily a few years back. I understand that sometimes artists have regrets and want to reinvent themselves. I can even get behind them using the name "Watchhouse" moving forward, since it carries more meaning for them. The only thing that really irks me is their attempt to destroy the legacy of the name Mandolin Orange, under which I (and so many others) fell in love with their music, and to rebrand their former albums and even the album artwork as having been written under the name Watchhouse, which they were not. It seems disingenuous. I still love their earlier music and some of their newer music, and I'll probably listen to it forever, but Watchhouse definitely didn't write Quiet Little Room, Haste Make/Hard Hearted Stranger, This Side of Jordan, or Such Jubilee (I don't mind so much about Watchhouse usurping Blindfaller and Tides of a Teardrop, since the former seemed to mark a considerable shift in the band's dynamics, from duo to full band with a different sound). There, I have told the internet what I think of that - glad I finally got it off my chest.

I know what he means about the original name, it sounds a bit lightweight. And was it a pun on mandarin orange? I always thought that's what it was and therefore a bit lame. Watchhouse sounds more grown up, yes it's a bit awkward changing names at this stage in their career but given the quality of the music we'll soon get used to it.

Watchhouse is FOR SURE a Christian band name. I hate to say, but I bet this will impact their current and future audience a lot.

Pointless. Mandolin Orange was a great name. Watchhouse is meaningless. Perhaps you think that you have not been progressing as you would have wanted, but that's down to the music, not the name.

You call it meaningless in the face of a video where he literally explains the meaning of the name “Watchhouse” and how it carries much more meaning to them than their previous name. Did you watch the video or just click and comment? Mandolin Orange is a nice sounding name, sure. But that name is more “meaningless” than the new one.

Pointless to you maybe, not him and it doesn't change the amazing music they have made and are still making... If you think by them changing their name, changes the way their music sounds to you, you might by listening to music the wrong way.

You say it’s meaningless right after he explains the meaning. Sir, if you were with me, I’d teach you some ju jitsu.
