This song is just golden in so many ways. Not unnoticed is the bass line in this version. Great job coming up with part that is so intricate and interesting without detracting from the rest of this masterful song.

Hands down my favorite song by them. I started covering it this year, and I plan to open a town festival with it this weekend. It's an 1850s festival in rural Missouri, and it will be a perfect song for the event. I also play at the fine dining restaurant every Wednesday and Thursday in the same town, and I cover this song every night. the staff have grown to love it, though I doubt they know what I'm singing about. Mandolin Orange/Watchhouse is arguably the most underrated band I've ever heard.
This song isn't as political as people think. It feels like its about how hatred leads to resentment, which leads back to hatred and creates a cycle. Valid in pretty much every context I can think of at least.

Exactly. I found the "Boots of Spanish Leather" cover exactly 10 minutes ago and then this popped into the feed. Thought I'd found another winner. Was half expecting that old radio song from the 70s. Beautiful. This and Blue Ruin always cause me to pause and listen more attentively. Plus they’re such good songs.
