Idaho Backcountry Ski Tour

  • We set out to climb and ski a mountain near the South Fork of the Salmon River. We also skied surrounding peaks. All in all we climbed 5,200 vertical feet and skied the same. Surprisingly there was descent snow as we got above 6,000 feet especially on the north east and north west faces. I would say that the northeast fared better than northwest just because it seemed more wind sheltered. The South Fork of the Salmon country is part of the Boise and Payette National Forest. The snow depth is shallower than further west, but the snow is a bit more dry.
