    I was diagnosed with ADHD (combined)this year. I am 52, the only benefit I can see about my ADHD is my lack of caring about the future. I have had the following jobs, policeman, private security contractor, bodyguard, night club bouncer, salesman and chef. With a brief stint as a bus driver.
    One thing I have had an ephihany about. You can never be anyone but yourself. I have an extremely strong attraction to jobs or activities that are potentially lethal. I have no fear of death, it doesn't even factor into my decision making process.
    My entire life I have been masking trying to fit in and please others. When all I want to do is be in the most chaotic places facing danger because that is the only time I feel normal and be myself.
    I refuse to medicate myself.

    Thank you so much for all the work you have done for so many. I've just been diagnosed, and I am going to start on medication. From what I have learned ADHD'ers typically stop using drugs after 1-2 years. I asked my psychiatrist about this, and he said it often was because of depression, that was linked to not regulating the doses along the way. I will give it a try. But I am no dreamer (anymore), and I love my ADHD-traits of creativity, multi-ideamaking, being present and funny, even if nobody else does. Well. I watch your videos with gratitude and interest. You have already taught me a lot. Keep on being real to yourself. Respect.

      Exactly, I know I will procrastinate logging on to the group, because I will feel like I’m unmotivated to do the task, that I need to share with the group. I will feel guilty wasting time in the group in case I’m not productive or embarrassed that I am not doing it fast enough.

    • @miyami2898
      @miyami2898 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah as someone who has tried the study buddy method, I’d suggest whatever app you use to simulate this you have notifications turned ON for that person (your accountability partner) specifically AND make sure there is an innate trait that you really like about them. The high regard you have for them will cause you to want to put your best foot forward for them.
      If you interact with the person beyond studying (like, talking about life and whatnot) it shouldn’t get boring.
      Chances are, for him, there may have been a sense of financial guilt if he didn’t check in because of how expensive it was, so that may have helped him as well. The financial guilt probably went away when he split the price but at that point he had a whole community counting on him so the personal accountability was tenfold.
      Also, honestly sometimes I don’t get bored of something as easily. I used to have a planner that was undated and it had a unique layout. I kept using it until it started falling apart (only a couple months in 😔). So usually the boredom kicks in and sometimes it doesn’t which is why I give everything a try. Because you may have found that one thing that will never bore you.
      If it’s something you’re really worried abt, I’d suggest alternating between study methods. Usually after 3 weeks, the previous “boring” method may have gained some novelty or “nostalgia” to it.

    I have found a great many of your tips and insights very helpful. I'm asking this respectfully and with genuine curiosity, and I know it's going to probably come off otherwise so... here goes the question: What can introverts with ADHD (+ other conditions) and social anxiety (like myself) do to get the same effect as your focus group? I see some potential anchor points in what you said here, but it all fell apart for me when you suggested involving other people. Any thoughts?

    Why, even when we were in a classroom, were we still completely distracted as a child with ADHD? Isn’t the teacher supposed to act as an "accountability coach"?

    • @miyami2898
      @miyami2898 12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Right, keyword there is child. That’s why it didn’t work because you (not you specifically, general “you” in this case) didn’t actually have any care for what was being taught. He’s targeting young adults who have intentionally chosen to go to college and have intentionally chosen the needed courses to be able to attain the profession that they WANT to pursue. ADHD is an interest based disorder, so if you’re forced to go to school and forced to take classes that have nothing to do with what you’re studying then ofc you don’t see the teachers as someone who can hold you accountable. You don’t even take what they’re teaching seriously.
      You actually have to take the teacher seriously and *not* want to let them down. Even neurotypical kids don’t focus/turn in work during class.
      And I’m saying all this as someone who actually liked a lot of my teachers.
      There’s more to a classroom than just the adult that impacts the learning quality. His accountability method is more comparable to a 1 on 1 tutor that you hold in high regards, imo.

My tip for this is frequent breaks with light excercise like walking and small meals and snacks. You need also to change sceneries and try different halls and group of people.

    I can relate to your story 100%. It literally feels like the story of my life. I have spent so much money and even more time myself in so many tricks and techniques to overcome my ADHD symptoms including medication(ritalin, aderall, strattera, SSRIs), 10s of meditation techniques, so many tools like pomodoro, journaling and what not. I dont think i have left out any domain of solution discussed in reasearch papers or even generic websites. While I appreciate the work you are doing and your intentions but from my own experience this method is very impractical and would fail quicker than all of the techniques. I dont mean to discredit the hard work and effort you have put but there are some techniques that genuinely help managing my severe symptoms of ADHD but this is definitely not going to work atleast for me. I would be happy to discuss these techniques that work for me if you’d like. My techniques have helped me focus and work all day long

I'm retired so I don't have the deadlines I had in the past. I've been able to accept that I'm slower now, and its ok. But I still get overwhelmed when there's several things on my to do list.

    - I have all the symptoms but can't afford to go a specialist and get the diagnosis.
    - I'm overwhelmed by the amount of people who think or know for a fact that they have it, they are just too many , to a level that i think it might just not be real !!!? isn't brain conditions supposed to be rare?
    If you are an expert on the subject and have an extra 15 min to explain and convince a broke ass dude like me that ADHD is real and not just a trend or a procrastinators excuse please contact me ,

    Oof. The "gifted underachiever" label is so accurate, it burns. I have a vivid and awful memory of the last day of grade school, one of my teachers grabbing my arm and whispering that I would never amount to anything. Years later I had a bad case of gifted kid burnout after I graduated high school and dropped out of college. It lead to a lot of hallmarks of undiagnosed ADHD: risky behavior, drug and alcohol abuse that lead to addiction, hopping from one dead-end job to another, etc. I still wonder how much of this I would have been spared if I'd had this diagnosis at 14 or 24 instead of 34.

    Also, I am guessing it may be more complex where there are concurrent battles with depression and utter burn out.
    Like, if you're not even sure what your goal is any more bar just trying to survive and get through a day.
    Lots of mention of focus groups but not of what these actually are. What is a focus session?

    1. The people who have ADHD have very low dopamine biologically which gives them a disadvantage in executive functions
    The dopamine will not increase to such a level to have a consistent motivations qnd willpower to do things
    Why cant i work if i absolutely have to and why do i become an executive machine when there is pressure
    Internal power triggers soch as willpower and dopamine are variable
