    Hey good video man! I hope you got an A on your school project, I learned a lot from your video.
    In fact, so much so that now I know that I may be one of the hated groups within the breakcore community lol. I've been listening to breakcore (or what I thought was breakcore) for almost a year now so I'd say I'm pretty new to the genre and as you can imagine I come from the 'fakecore' side of the genre, as you've called it and I think I understand what you explain in that segment.
    This "modern" breakcore, 'lolicore' or 'chill breakcore' (as I've seen labeled) that exploded around 2022, is quite different fron the original breakcore as you explained. In general the breaks are much more distorted and sampled in more extreme ways and also has a completely different feel compared to this current trend, in which the breaks are much simpler and the music much calmer and less experimental overall. On the other hand, I can't help but think that calling it 'Ambient Jungle' doesn't quite do it justice and 'fakecore' a bit derogatory.
    It is true that this pseudo-breakcore and rhe OG breakcore have strong differences both culturally and of composition. OG breakcore feels much more experimental and hardcore as opposed to the aesthetic style and closely associated with anime culture that, although I listen to this type of music daily, I understand that it can feel kinda edgy and even cringey (or at least that's how I felt at first before listening to it) especially for breakcore purists.
    A part of me feels that this musical trend is nothing more than a new subgenre born from internet culture that could be said to be more commercial or friendlier to the musical tastes of a more generic or less refined audience, so to speak, but with some things in common with OG breakcore such as the transmission of sad, dramatic, frenetic feelings or the close relationship between this music and neurodiversity. Appart from that, I understand why older, more veteran breakcore listeners may eveb feel furious that this new batch of people refer to another type of music as if it were THE breakcore genre as a whole (myself included before watching this video) and ignore the origins of the genre.
    It is not the first time that something like this happens in the world of music. For example Memphis phonk (originally) and the Drift Phonk subgenre that completely eclipsed it or Old House music and the current more Pop/EDM house music to name a few cases which I find similar. I think that what has been happening in recent years with breakcore is the natural evolution of what happens when a musical genre reaches the general public, it transforms in many aspects and ends up resembling more popular and less experimental genres. It is not a better subgenre, just different and I believe that anyone who loves music knows and appreciates the history and evolution of the genres they listen to.
    I really liked your video and it made me reflect on the subject and of course now I am interested in exploring breakcore beyond what I heard until now. You probably have different opinions regarding what I have said and I would even say that it is possible that I was wrong about many points i made and I would love to share opinions and recommendations with anyone who reads this comment.

    • @twigplaysstuff
      @twigplaysstuff  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

      I am genuinely so happy that this video reached a person like you! I'm glad I could teach you about all this stuff, and I agree with pretty much every opinion listed here. I do get that calling it fakecore/ambient jungle *is* a bit derogatory, and I apologize. It definitely is it's own genre and thing, and I totally respect it! The only problem for me is that people call it "breakcore" for some reason, I think it just needs to get it's own name tbh lmao. TYSM for watching, and happy listening!

    • @yagopernasgomez3032
      @yagopernasgomez3032 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I agree with you, it should have its own name, Ambient Jungle is not really degrading but I just don't think it fits... But 'lolicore', as I've once read, definitely is. It doesn't represent it at all hahahaha. Thanks for the reply! :))

    A really great overview of what breakcore really is!! As who was one of the first breakcore artist is, iirc a video mentioned how an artist called Alec Empire was one of the notable producers that pushed the breakcore scene before venetian. Albeit I would say that vsnares did popularize the modern sound we hear today. Aside from that, i really love the section touching on fakecore lol + i also started ventruing into mashcore which is a rabbit hole im willingly falling deep into!!!

    U know what, its been a while since I find new breakcore artists that I like, I've been years stuck to Bye2, Rory in the early 20's (which funny enough, I always thought was an arbitrary year selection), Machine girl, Goreshit, Venetian snares and the usual [2 released songs from just a couple weeks ago] artists like Zzkillme, iera, Crxw (the one I'd reccomend the most out of the little ones for its similarity to Rory's music which is the one I'd recommend the most in general)...
    Sure enough, breakcore is not the only thing that I like to listen to, but it's also definitely the one that motivates me the most to do stuff apart from rotting in front of my pc, and I think I've listened so much to the same artists over and over again that I got to a point in which I don't get this feeling out of it anymore. Maybe all the problem is that I just usually wait for songs to come at me instead of searching for them, but maybe if I do it it's because it works, like when this video appeared in my for u :).
    But I digress, the point is, cool video essay man, I loved pretty much all the music u used to make it and Ima go and check the artists u recommended rn, also, I'd like to recommend some non-breakcore music that I think u'd like: Iyowa, some of DennokoP, some of Muship, Femtanyl, Awerewa, Metaroom and some of CheapeX, being this one the one i recommend the least.

    As an artist myself, I really dont care about genre semantics, what matters more is who is innovating more, and who is trying their best to make something great. although i do like breakcore, the atmospheric dnb scene seems to be innovating much more than the modern breakcore scene, so that is what I’m more invested in

    My favorite part of the breakcore community has to be furries. Lapfox, the quick brown fox, burning brain sound industries, Renard, 4lung, etc. They very rarely ever lay off on extreme beats and chaotic samples. A lot of samples in BBSI (burning brain sound industries) songs include a plethora of memes, in fact almost every song they make has a meme sample in it. One song by TQBF (the quick brown fox) even goes over 1000 BMP. You might have heard some of their songs in animation memes before as they tend to resonate with the furries of that community. This part of the community also tends to have other sub genres like speedcore sometimes. I personally love this side of breakcore/hardstyle and wish more people can check it out. Soundcloud is your best bet for finding all the songs. I would make a video about it myself but tbh it's just better for a person to listen to it and experience it for themselves and for them to discover more about this community. But if anybody wants recommendations, start with Act my Age by 4lung, brutal rhythm rider by TQBF, and color of the dress by Babe Fiends. (Sorry 4 the super long comment I love yapping about breakcore furries)

    • @twigplaysstuff

      Yeah the furry community is super involved with breakcore, and although I'm not personally a furry, the breakcore produced by furries is typically super good! (Also yeah TQBF and Renard are super nice! I'm pretty sure they're operated by the same person, but I might be wrong)

    shoebill mention? You're cultured. Try listening to sorry about my face, please be quiet, axtrmnt, and chinesemidiboard, they are all some great artists worth checking out in the scene.
    edit: small correction on "fakecore": This actually blew up in 2019 and 2020, with sewerslvt leading the charge pretty much single-handedly, and other artists coming out of the woodwork to assist in pushing the style (sofțxoxo's, zenithlights, watering, salad, loli in early 20s (now rory in early 20s) and namii (now kyoumeni), are my personal picks, but the general soundcloud breakbeat artist community at large was responsible)
    edit 2: You're missing a subtype (I know you said as much, just felt like filling in my knowledge, I hope this doesn't come off as dickish, if so, my bad): Depressive breakcore. The artists I said in my reccomendation list are all that (minus chinesemidiboard). It's characterized by harsher breaks, comparable to type b, but low or hidden sample amount. And lower frequencies ("sorry about my face -... and thoughts of suicide" and "please be quiet - cherophobia" are both good examples).

    Brother... Hands down _the best_ video essay about the genre. You basically boiled down to a 20min vid a plethora of topics and discussions about the genre, its origin and subgenres without leaning too much on technicality or the stuff said on Wikipedia, it was an honest surprise to actually listen to somebody talking about something they ACTUALLY LISTEN TO and every. Single. Example. Was on fucking point.
    Heck you even put riaijuu on the mix, i thought we were like...? 20 in the whole world? Who listens to them.
    Now about the examples, i actually began listening to breakcore via Reizoko Cj and Venetian Snares too, my first ever breakcore song was a recommendation from 20...13? 2012? ( I cant remember) And it was ULTRAVIOLENT JUNGLIST by yours truly Venetian Snares, the first time i heard it i was like "what the? Its like the music i like in midnight club 3( it was Soundwall VIP by Dom & Roland) but its really aggressive and... Absurdly well made" and it was love at first sight.
    Then a little after cirnoRHTL got recommended and i just became a hardcore fan of the genre, cirnoRHTL is just perfect.
    My main artists are: Reizoko Cj (yup, still), Venetian snares (original, i know), NEKOPHILIAC (I... Like lolicore too), LHK, pencil, HAWAWA(cmon, bananafishEP was my first ever album downloaded, i still love it) and at last nyojikko.
    I dont have a favorite between them, as everyone is a master on what they do (or did... Plase come back nyojikko)
    Man... Just thanks for actually showing people what breakcore essentially is, and although the damage is pretty visible already, i guess its just hype that's going to die down just like the techno that was actually EDM that actually didn't exist shit (i still cant believe people actually said that Marshmellow was techno, fuck no, techno is fanon flowers, WAX. , 999999999, etc.)

      This is a common misconception and it has to do with how we understand the -core suffix. Nowadays in the internet it's being used to describe any kind of aesthetic, like cottage + core = cottagecore. But in breakcore's case, this suffix comes from _hardcore,_ a term used to describe all kinds of heavy music. Breakcore is, in its essence, breakbeat music taken to its extreme, with fast tempos, heavy distortion and intricate, chaotic choppage, as well as influence from other hardcore music styles like gabber and punk rock.

    Cool video, however there's this one flaw that I would like to comment.
    Venetian Snares althought is the most well known artist of the genre, didn't invent breakcore. Breakcore was created/pioneered in the mid-90s by Alec Empire from Atari Teenage Riot, who took influences from Jungle/DnB and Hardcore Techno. So yeah, there was breakcore before Vsnares even started producing it.
    Some examples of this "early/old school breakcore" would be Christoph de Babalon, Shizuo, Bomb 20 and Alec himself.
    But besides that, it's a nice video and it's great to see more people explaining what real breakcore is instead of "hahaha sewerslvt atmospheric anime dnb jungle!!!!!!!!11!11!". Hope you got a good grade for this project!

    Flashcore is when you combine breakcore and glitch and idm and “wandering soundscapes” (so essentially either formless or very unpredictable song form) and sometimes it sounds futuristic and similar to breakcore and then you have qebrus and /f ( she’s sometimes kinda flashcore) type flashcore which is incomprehensible and doesn’t feel human

    (sorry for the long comment but I am just passionate lol)
    Nice video man, the editing is amazing and the whole thing was entertaining throughout, tho I have some criticism. First I feel like you kinda just skipped over the origin of the genre, tho it's understanable since it's kinda really disconected from Australia to Europe, tho you can at least mension, Artists like "Alec Empire" from Germany as the creator of the first breakcore album "the Destroyer". Venetian Snares is not so "one of the first artists" but more of the pioneer of the genre pushing it to new limits with inovation and genre mixing a good example you showed was "Hajnal"(good taste). Also Thanks for talking about Reizoko Cj, He deserves so much more love... But as my last criticism abou the Mashcore Section and calling "type A" "Shoebill Mashcore" kinda comes out as if you're framing it like shoebill invented (I don't belive that was your intention) but It might get people confused Artists like "Annoying Ringtone" (Check him out if you haven't heard his stuff) and "DJKurara" for example made music really REALLY similar to Shoebill's way before he came onto the sciene. For "type B" it's fair since Reizoko's style is so unique some people and artist's cathecorize it as it's own subgenre (reizokocore).
    That's it for my criticism Really good video, much love :)
    But also I want to recommed you check out the Polish breakcore sciene and artists like "Loffciamcore" he created a new mashcore subgenre (not really new lol it's like 10 to 11 years old lol) called "Polcore" which is really Reizoko Cj adjacent and it's really comedic in nature.
    Here's a really fun example tho that's not Loffciamcore lol: th-cam.com/video/zydTFkmo6C4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=THMJy5uf628az146

    • @twigplaysstuff
      @twigplaysstuff  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ah, yeah, I didn't realize that calling shoebill "type A" would make it seem like shoeb invented it, but in retrospect it does kinda seem like that, my bad lol. Also yeah Annoying Ringtone and DJKurara did do a lot of stuff similar to Shoebill's style before shoeb was producing, Shoebill is just my personal fav lul, I would have gotten deeper into the history of all of the subgenres/Alec Empire n stuff but I was on a pretty tight time limit cos' of the whole school project thing yknow. Oh also Polcore is bangin' :D
