I think the, "Let her go," the quick look of confusion, then followed by, "Very poor choice of words hahahaha" exchange is one of the funniest Joker - Batman interactions in any of the films. It also shows that the Joker is completely willing to change plans at a moment's notice. He was using her as a bargaining chip to get Batman to remove his mask, but abandons that plan entirely because he couldn't resist the punchline of actually letting her go. He'll get Batman another time.

So apparently, according to the interviews, the actress who plays Rachel in the movie said that this was her first time seeing Heath Ledger in his Joker makeup. Her nerves weren't fake.....she was genuinely scared of him. lol

That line was a bit different in the first Trailer but was edited Perfectly for the Movie. They changed It so that Batman pretty much used his League of Shadows appearing out of the Blue trick and It was Brilliant!
The dynamic between these two once in a generation actors is sooo perfect!!
I know some people might have trouble taking Bale 100% seriously cause of the voice thing, but I honestly think he's one of few actors on the planet who could fully match the intensity and immersion Ledger brought to the table and not get intimidated or thrown off by it.
I could've watched at least 3 more movies with these guys going at it, but I know that would make this one slightly less magical than it is.
We and Nolan were truly lucky to get this combination of lead actors for this, forever grateful

1:35 I love how Joker reacts in this scene. It feels like it’s the only scene of Joker being genuine, besides the conversations with Batman. You can tell most of the things he says are “Jokes” from how he got different versions of the story how he got the scars. Bruce told Rachel to “stay hidden” and she instead decides to play hero. Now that Joker knows who she is and what she means to both Dent and Batman, he put her in danger. Rachel pretty much got herself killed.

This scene was the first time Michael Caine and Maggie Gyllenhaal saw Heath in his makeup. Michael was so stunned he completely forgot his lines, and Maggie was so scared during their confrontation that she kept looking to Nolan off-screen to cut, which you can see. Batman may have been the hero, but this was Heath's movie, no question.
This movie scares me, heath is the perfect example of not playing a character, rather becoming one instead

Rest In piece Heath Ledger. His work in this movie was phenomenal. Joker in this movie was insane and properly horrifying. And also by the way i'm watching this scene while writing this comment, and I hear, "Very poor choice of words.", followed by horrific laughter. Heath Ledger was a phenomenal actor and may he rest and peace.

Fun fact: This was the first time that both Michael and Maggie saw Heath in his makeup. Michael was supposed to interact with Joker prior to the shotgun blast and Maggie wasn't supposed to have her eyes closed while talking with Heath but both Michael and Maggie were so shocked by his appearance that they were stunned and it shows in their characters.

Heath Ledger created a Joker that will never be surpassed. Every viewing of this film reveals more magic of Ledgers incredible craft. His study of The Joker literally consumes him.

I'm torn on how to reply to this... I've always felt that Nicholson's Joker was better, never once thinking differently. But that is from the stance of comparing to the source material. Ledger's Joker is kind of a Joker/Riddler hybrid, whereas Nicholson's Joker is more of a pure Joker. But that isn't meant to be a knock against Ledger! He portrays and acts the character as it's written and directed. And in THAT regards, you are correct in that his performance as Joker here will likely never be surpassed.

Maggie Gylenhaal was not supposed to close her eyes in this scene according to the script. She closed her eyes because she was literally scared of Heath's terrific acting. Heath is a legend
Heath's make up probably didn't help either. If I saw that face in real life I definitely would have been disturbed at the very least.

I think it's important to pay attention to every character. This is why Dark Knight stands out from other superhero movies (though it's not off-the-comic) where only the prime characters are under spotlight. It's essentially the atmosphere that makes it great. There are subtle instances to look for such as Rachel warning Batman not to take off his mask at 4:01.

Happens a lot in this movie. Like Joker asking Batman if he knows how he got his scars when clearly he was in no position to tell the story, just to set up 'I know how you got these'. It's like the director and screenwriters knew how much good cinematography and lines can get you away with and just stopped caring about logic or consistency.

This scene is perfect. From the score of Hans Zimmer in the first 40 seconds giving such tense buildup to this scene and seeing the judge and commissioner both get killed was so intense. Then the joker steps in and you instantly feel his presence and he fools around a little, before approaching the man with the blade “I hated my father” Rachel being super gutsy steps up and joker takes his knife and approaches her, and his backstory changes again which is again a genius Nolan move to make joker even more mysterious. Then the more he talks, the louder his theme plays and the intensity increases. Honestly I say the part where Bruce and joker fight is the worst part of this scene because it’s so perfect that a perfect fight is worse than a perfect buildup 😂the fight is legit perfect but that buildup was so brilliant
It breaks my heart every time I see Heath Ledger in this movie every time I watch it but I love it RIP to this absolute legend 🔥🔥🔥

I watched a directors cut of The Dark Knight, most of the "acting" in this scene wasn't acting. Most of the cast hadn't seen Heath Ledger in his make up as The Joker. So, the loud tray drop was legit, the shocked looks, legit and the actress (i forget her name) that plays Rachel was legitly uncomfortable looking at Heath, which is why he kept saying "Look at me". His lines there were improvised.
To say this movie is the greatest is a serious understatement.
I think this is the scene where the butler (forgot his name) forgets his line because of how shocked he is

The reason why Bale’s Batman talks like that dates all the way back to the early 1990’s-my generation. Kevin Conroy auditioned for the role, and he used two slightly different voices for both Batman and Bruce Wayne, and every actor and voice actor used that ploy ever since.

I don't know why but I love the way Joker brushes his hair back when he approaches Rachel and says "Hello beautiful." Kind of shows him acting like a gentlemen even though you know he's a psycho.

He doesn't just tell different stories about the scars every time, he makes them up on the spot to fit the current circumstances. In this case making her think that she reminds him of his ex-girlfriend who betrayed him, plus the added bonus of making himself sound insane to scare her even more.

Goes to show how mentally insane he is. He carved his own face and makes up a story every time. That’s why I prefer this joker over the dceu joker.

You get the feeling that the actors are just as tense watching him, since Heath improvised a good amount of the Joker's mannerisms and more disturbing actions like grabbing her face and forcing her to look at him. Literally no one in the room is sure what he's about to do.
