Great info. I wish more videographers would use your complete and concise description and info you provide. I love all your videos. Would like to see some more scratch building tutorials. I imagine your models are museum quality. Great job!

Great video, thank you for raising some important considerations when investing in tools. I'll cast another vote for the Proxxon 10-inch sander. I bought mine from MicroMark in 1995, and it is still going strong. I've not used the Byrnes sander, but wouldn't hesitate to recommended it for wood. I do have the Byrnes table saw, and could not live without it. It is a rare day into shop when I don't use it.

This is the second comment I’ve made on this video, but I’ve recently been made aware of a company that’s producing several very innovative tools for model builders, and one of them is a disc sander that is hand, yes, hand, operated and has a has a nicely executed fence for sanding angles. The fence has etched markings, and the base is adjustable so it can be dialed in to guarantee that if the scale reads 90, 45, or whatever, the sanded angle will be exact! Well worth looking into, and a real asset when the power goes out during a model building session!

My vote is with the Proxxon one. Great tool and very quiet on the slower speeds. Mine lives right by the bench.

I bought the Proxxon based on your recommendation, and love it. In fact, it has pride of place on the right hand side of my primary modeling workbench.
On the oscillating sander, if you are in the market, Home Depot carries the Rigid Brand. I like it because it is not only an oscillating drum sander, but comes with an oscillating belt attachment that is great for larger flat surfaces. The disadvantage is the size; it is larger than the Craftsman model showed in the video.
Finally, if you have a garage based shop and 220v, I have a Delta 12" disc/ 6" X 48" sander that has given me decades of service. I do a fair amount of pattern making, and you can feed Renshape or Butterboard (made near me in Grass Valley, CA!) into all day long and it won't bog down at all. I've even aggressively sanded 2" thick blocks of acrylic. This was a very expensive purchase for me at the time, but hardly a shop day goes by that I don't use it. As Paul points out, it is rare that you regret buying a quality tool when you can. and this is the type of big woodworking tool you can occasionally find on Craigslist at a much lower price.

I've had that same Delta Sander for over 35 years ... you should have noticed it in a number of the clips in this video ... In fact, you see me using the disc in one of the Neptune videos. It is a great machine, but not something for the average modeler.

I made a small sander out of a battery tooth brush, great for awkward areas

Very good show! You clearly did your homework before making this one! I live about an hour from Proxxon’s US headquarters, and they make an impressive lineup of power tools. The sad part is that some of their products, like small planers and jointers, are not sold in the US for some reason, and they get real “testy” if you ask them about that! The discussion near the end of the video dealing with the spindle sander showed a pet peeve of mine, but you didn’t mention it. That was the course machining job on the table surface! I see it on a lot of foreign made machinery such as drill press tables, and I’m not a fan of it! I guess the manufacturers (not the company who’s name is on the machines) would go broke if they took the time to machine a smooth surface! Even worse than that is some of the Delta 4” belt/6” disc sanders that have a cast aluminum ribbed table against the disc. And not curvy ribs, but squared off ones! Impossible to slide anything on!

I am about to change my table top sander and really appreciated this video. I was going to purchase the Byrnes but will look at the Proxxon again. I have to say i am a Byrnes fan although I have many Proxxon table top tools. The problem i have with Proxxon is that they are not as robust as the Byrnes. The table square on my band saw has broken twice. It is very cheaply made. Anyway. Thanks for the video.

I think the Byrnes is better suited for wood. the Proxoon has a very good speed control which lets if function nicely with plastics.

I don't know if anyone else sells it but Menard's has a 5 inch disc sander with variable speed. Additionally FastTracks has started to sell a hand powered disc sander

Great video! Thank you for your professional and expert advice. Could you please tell me what type of styrene desk cutter are you using at about 7:37 in the video?

Hello Mr. Paul, Mr. is my constant companion on my model bench, as I work and watch your videos, I noticed in the video (Small Sanding Machines) that when you use the "the chopper" cutter, mr. sand again manually and then at Proxxon, I have the same cutter and it always cuts at an angle to the right, I wonder if I don’t know how to use it or is it a "joint" defect, continue with your great videos. Big hug.

I have a similar issue and I think you can minimize the problem if you really steady the stock piece. It mainly has to do with the fact that the blade is working at an angle rather than being parallel with the table, so even if the work is clamped, the tall thin razor blade will deflect. Maybe if there was some sort of short rigid blade, we might see more reliable cuts.

Thanks for the return, I already made countless adjustments putting on and giving a different angle and the blade I use is the same blade that came with the cutter, for industrial use. I’ll see if I can find a bigger thickness. Thank you very much.@@scale-model-workshop

Bought the proxxon T125E in August 2023, and the disc runout is bad. I don't know if it was damaged during shipping or a defect, but when I run my nail along the disc (4:38) , and it chatters quite a bit.
Any advice? Exchange for a different one, and see if the problem persists? Try the 250?
Long time fan Paul, appreciate the videos.
