Retired and reentering modeling, these tapes weren't around back in my day when I used mechanical drafting tape designed for taping your paper to drawing board. Its still around even with all this computer design these days and works well without leaving residue
Somthing I also found helpful is those square yellow sticky notes. There a bit harder to find but you can get them with the hole of the back is sticky. Great for masking 1/48 aircraft camouflage patterns.
Subscribed today to your channel after reading praise for your work. So far, I’m already learning useful info! Also, looks like you have a Boos kitchen island wood table there. ;) Used to have one myself.
I found a cheap Chinese tape on eBay called Qunlitape, it's all green and comes in a bunch of rolls down to 2mm. It was an experiment at the time but it's great tape. Not as good as Tamia, but still very good!
Michael Brind I used the tamiya yellow tape and the adhesive reacted with the acrylic paint and messed up my project , did some research and found it to be a common problem
A trick I picked up from doing auto body is to do precision masking work with tape only, then tape paper overlapping the precise tape. Then you don't fight the paper while doing precision work.
Great info. Yet, If you can say something on compatible tape in using acrylic paints, that would be good ! This in masking over prior coats. Tired of lifting these coats off with the wrong tape.
What great detailed information on a subject only a few could appreciate. I know I'm going to try all your favorites and see who it works for me. Thank you for the time and information. Let me know if coastal airbrush a sponsor and I'll show support.
Thanks Dave ... I don't have any sponsors ... but Coast Airbrush is always my go to ... it's the mecca for all the top So-Cal airbrush guys and they all know their stuff.
Scale Model Workshop Thank you for the reply. It is nice to know if a recommendation is because a person believes in it or if they are paid to say it. I was placing and order with Coastal soon so I'm glad to hear your pleased with them as a supplier. Keep up the great channel. I will be launching yet another model based channel myself.
I am frustrated by the masking tape I could find at the local bookstore--it sometimes lets some paint smudge, ruining the paintjob. So I gave Tamiya Masking tape a try; though through this video, I find more alternatives. I just hope our online resellers have it!
I found a good tape for masking where I work. I don't know where you can buy it. It's a teflon tape. It's translucent, the adhesive is just right, not too strong or weak. Plus I cut strips from it that I can easily bend around curves. I really don't know what they use it for at work. I never asked.
I suggested Coast Airbrush in the video ... I found it right off Google ... "FBS tape Promask" I don't put up links because they change all the time and then you would be writing in complaining about that.
Well he is using it as a reference for comparison. I want to find cheaper products that work but I think Tamiya put in the research to market a high quality product and I would tip my hat to them for that.
4 years later and it's still very helpful, thank you. I wonder if the recommendations have generally stayed the same.

That's really a great review, thank you. Bad thing some items from 3M or FPS are not easy to find in Europe

Just the video and information I was looking for. Excellent!

Good interesting video.

I believe you could do a masterful job even with the cheap tape.
Yellow low tack "Frog" brand? Seems pretty similar to Tamiya.
If you're using store bought spray paint will Tamiya tape give you a clean line with no bleeding?
Some paints have poor cross linked strength when dried. Paints colour can be the same but the binding compound totally different.
Nice!
How about some links to some of this stuff? I can't find that ProMask dispenser anywhere and I want that!

@@scale-model-workshop Well you know as well as I do that we'll find SOMETHING to complain about... :)
Thank you. It's not easy to keep up with new products.
Finaly somebody unbised. All those tamiya worshipers just make me sick. Tamiya tape is lacking a few qualities.
