Given that my wife is a Thai ladyboy and we've been together for 20 years, let me add a few comments. First, I'm not crazy about that opener joke about trans assault. I assure you, this joke is a lot less funny when you know trans women personally who have been assaulted for being trans which is not at all uncommon in the world. That said, as you say, you are very much correct that ladyboys will generally let you know that they are trans. No one wants to waste their time. I'll also add that the guy is also welcome to put that they're not interested in trans girls in their dating bio which also saves time and effort for everyone. Everyone is responsible for putting their own likes and dislikes out there and in 2023 you can't assume everyone isn't trans. Next, many Thai ladyboys are not interested in taking every possible surgical and hormonal step even if they had the money to do so. Particularly SRS. Honestly it's a lot less different than the nonbinary folks in the west in this regard than you may think. There is a vast and ancient history of trans people all across South and SE Asia as a third gender. Lastly its quite a stretch to call being trans widely accepted in Thailand. It's well tolerated socially and Thai people have the amazing skill of minding their own business. Thai trans women can't legally marry their husbands in Thailand. They can't change their legal gender on their ID. They can't legally adopt. Discrimination law is incredibly weak. Thailand really is a legal black hole for LGBT rights. My wife and I have been waiting way over a decade to be able to legally marry and nothing yet. You'd share my skepticism about actual acceptance if you couldn't marry your wife for a healthy percentage of your lifespan. Otherwise I thought your treatment of ladyboys was certainly helpful, respectful and accurate and for that I applaud you. If you have any questions about LGBT Thailand, just ask. Cheers.

Certainly, the joke could look in somewhat bad taste in hindsight, and deeply saddened to hear you personally know people who have been assaulted for being trans! Additionally, this is news to me about the legal rights of trans people in Thailand, it certainly seems I've confused partial intersubjective societal acceptance with actual legal rights of trans people in Thailand. This is certainly news to me! I do hope trans people in Thailand (and worldwide) get the rights they deserve soon, and wish you and your wife the best of luck in getting married! @@shaun7638 My wife is a trans woman and she’s legally female. We have zero interest in having kids so the lack of the ability to have kids together is a feature, not a problem.

@@shaun7638 Rest assured as a bisexual guy I’m well acquainted with non-acceptance and hostility. My own father never spoke to me again until the day he died. My wife is as much as woman to me as my own mother. No trans woman is under the illusion they can have their own kids. Gender isn’t biology. Completely different things.
